What Conditions are Necessary for Proper
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
The sponsors of this devotion should make sure that a
suitable number of worshippers are present during the
entire time of exposition. The church also asks us to
light four to six candles around the sacrament, and permits us to use incense. The Blessed Sacrament may
never be left exposed without at least one worshipper
present.

OLBS Mission Trip to Nicaragua (Nov. 7-Nov. 14)
Once again the Mission Team wishes to express its
appreciation to the people of the Parish for their generosity to this year's Mission. We are deeply grateful
to everyone for their support of the abandoned, disabled babies and children, and the young adults they
are becoming, at Hogar Belén Managua and Diriamba. Please know that the children, the staff at the
homes, and the Mission Team will keep you in their
prayers.
If you have not contributed, you may still bring
your donations to the rectory. Checks can be made
out to Mustard Seed or OLBS, but please indicate
that it is for the Mission. Or you may visit the Parish
website at www.olbschurch.org and find the Mission
button on the upper right hand side of the home page.
Clicking on this will bring you to the Mustard Seed
webpage where you can donate directly to one or
more of the missioners by clicking on their name.
We are also collecting much needed items for the
mission homes. A giving tree is in the Church vestibule, with leaves that can be taken and returned with
your items placed in the bin under the tree. Muchas

From Heaven”, by Mitch Albom. It’s about a small
town on Lake Michigan that gets worldwide attention
when its citizens start receiving phone calls from the
afterlife. Is it the greatest miracle ever or a massive
hoax? This allegory about the power of belief is a real
page-turner that will touch your soul. Come join us

Respect Life Committee: On September
22, 2015 the U.S. Senate failed to pass a law that
would have prevented most abortions after babies
are old enough to feel pain. (This is after the House
of Representatives passed it on September 18, 2015.)
Science tells us that these children can fell the intense
pain of the abortion tools. Additionally, the abortion
lobby has launched an appalling marketing campaign,
designed to cover up the trauma and grief of postoperative women wounded by abortion and encouraged them to flaunt their abortions on social media
with a hashtag.

Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained
Discover the big picture of the Catholic faith, and
how to live it! Catholicism is an entire way of life. We
might be familiar with different aspects of the Catholic
faith. But how does it all fit together? And what difference does it make for our lives? Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained opens up the “big picture” of the
Catholic faith in a way that helps us know it, live it and
articulate it to others. Join us as our own Fr. Mark
Mathias leads our five (5) sessions this Fall. Each session includes a beautiful DVD and some time for discussion. Symbolon is for everyone, and all are welcome: those practicing their faith, those disconnected
from the Church in any way, and those who are thinking of becoming Catholic. Symbolon will meet on
Wednesdays at 7:30pm in the Parish Center, as follows:
10/14-Divine Revelation-God Seeking Us & the Compass for our Lives
10/21-The Bible-God's Love Letter to Humanity
10/28-The Story of Salvation-Creation, Fall & Redemption
11/4-Who is Jesus? Just a Good Man or Lord of our Lives?
MASS OF THE ANOINTING
We will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of
the Sick at a special parish Mass on Wednesday, 10/21,

in the Mass and pray for God’s gift of healing. Those
who can receive the Sacrament of Anointing are: individuals with a serious or chronic illness, and all those
suffering the effects of advanced age. All are invited
for refreshments in the cafeteria immediately following
the Mass.

From the Pastor’s Desk….
2015 Annual Catholic Appeal
Dear Parishioners,
Several times during the Holy Father’s recent visit I heard or read
commentaries that this pope was
revolutionary, or more mildly, counter-cultural. I
was pleased when some inevitably pointed out,
“Yeah, like Jesus!” In today’s gospel Jesus warns
against the false sense of security often derived from
wealth and the abundance of material possessions.
We note how the rich young man and the disciples
as well are shocked by his words. Pope Francis’
words were clear that business and the creation of
wealth has an important and necessary function in a
society. We enjoy the gifts of creation. But materialism is another thing altogether. Jesus warns against
thinking that because we have plenty we also have
God’s favor and are assured an eternal reward.
Heaven is out of reach for us; it is only possible for
us because of God’s goodness and mercy. Jesus
clearly challenges the rich young man in his love for
him. What might the Lord say to us if we dared to
ask “what more need I do?”
Thank all those who donated so far. We have
reached our goal in pledges—all your new pledges
will come back to the parish. Please make your
pledge soon. To date, 294 donors have pledged
$100,420 and $91,551 has been paid. Our goal is
$93,090. Thank you for your support.

Did You Know...?
Mark 10:17-30
When the rich man in today’s Gospel first approached Jesus, he was excited, optimistic, and
confident. We know this because he “ran up” to the
Lord and “knelt down before him.” He may have been
quite proud of himself when he was able to say about
the commandments, “all of these I have observed
from my youth.” The fellow probably thought his
work was done. But Jesus knew this man better than
he knew himself.
When Jesus challenged him to become detached from
his wealth—to sell his things and give to the poor—it
was too much. The man left Jesus. His excitement and
confidence were gone, and he was sad. What are we
clinging to that prevents us from accepting Jesus’ invitation? For some of us it may be wealth or possessions, for others the quest for success or the desire for
popularity. Or it may be entirely different. God
knows, and deep down we do too. Today, Jesus is
calling us to love him with our whole heart, not just a
comfortable percentage. It may seem too much to
give, but this faithful surrender is the path to happiness, both now and in the life to come.
