FIRM PHILOSOPHY
L.M. Holder III commits his practice to creating architecture compatible with the
climate and the environment and to share this knowledge of energy efficient
systems and renewable energy with others to build a sustainable environment.
There are finite conventional resources and an infinite need for these resources. For us to
sustain our society, we must integrate renewable energy and sustainable materials into
architecture. Our choice is not if we change, but how much will be left when our priorities
change. The earlier the change is made, the longer our standard of life can be
maintained. Holder researches historic examples, designs new buildings, shares
information with others, and gives lectures and seminars for professionals, and nonprofessionals alike. His leadership promotes alternative performance energy standards to
allow design freedom and promote innovation when prescriptive standards were
proposed.
He gives many lectures and seminars and writes workbooks and guidelines to promote
energy responsible architecture and his architectural projects receive national recognition
as do his lectures and seminars. Holder is a leader in researching methods of making the
transition and sharing information with others, creating buildings which are benchmarks
for energy efficient design; even creating buildings and structures which generate more
energy than they use. He provides energy, daylighting, and computer simulated lighting
and consulting services for professional, institutional, public, and private clients.
Throughout his career he endeavors to be part of the ultimate solution to create a quality
environment which can be sustained.

Designated a "great street" by the City of Austin planning staff, the newly upgraded
Brazos Street features three adjacent highrises renovated by L M Holder. At Perry
Brooks, we perched two large new office floors above an expanded parking garage.
These floors were integrated into the 1950s tower, which was modernized with exit
stairs, sprinklers, high-performance glazing, accessible restrooms, and new mechanical
systems. The exposed concrete framed interior provides a flexible loft-style
atmosphere that has become home to a new generation of Austin entrepreneurs.

We assembled the team to design and construct this anchor project for the new Uptown
Kyle district, following the widening of the local boulevard and overpass. We worked
with the local design board to develop an elegant streetscape; attractive lighting and
wide shaded sidewalks continue the small-town urbanism of downtown Kyle. A mix of
on-street and off-street parking provides quick access for modern health-oriented
tenants and their customers. Exterior walls are designed to optimize daylight while
demising wall details are crafted for acoustic privacy between tenants .

At NW Manufacturing, huge metal blocks are unloaded, milled, polished, inspected, and then
distributed to clients. Prospective clients now arrive through a new entry portal and daylit conference
room, then proceed to observe computer-controlled milling machines and specialty craftsmen through
fire-resistive windows without interrupting the forklift traffic. Employees enjoy fewer bottlenecks with
dedicated delivery and inspection areas.

Winter sun warms seating areas while the summer sun is carefully screened. Ambient lighting
is 100% natural during the day, with interior "streetlights" that kick in after dark. Behind the
scenes, a large concrete equipment pad sits vacant because efficient design allowed an entire
chiller to be successfully deleted from the project. The facility manager fondly calls this "Mac's
chiller" because an empty pad never requires electricity or maintenance.
