Msgr. Richard Huneger - The Pastor’s Keyboard
We recently began singing the Salve Regina (in Latin) at the end of Sunday Masses as part
of our Year of Mercy activities. Archbishop Sample's proclamation for the year was entitled
"Mater Misericordiae" (Mother of Mercy). Even though the English lyrics are at the bottom of
the page of #739 in the St Michael Hymnal, I've been asked to provide an interlinear version.
Here it is. The tilde ( ~ ) in a phrase means to flip-flop the words. The concluding prayer
(after the song) is also given, with interlinear translation. Enjoy! Note that just as we put " 's "
at the end of a word to show possession (the dog's bark), Latin puts little tags at the end to
“God has called us through show possession (Deus, God; Dei, God's; Maria, Mary; Mariae, Mary's). Also adjectives usuthe Gospel to possess the glory ally come after the noun (spes nostra, hope~our; mors perpetua, death perpetual), and the
of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
"pronoun" part of a verb, at its end (labor-o, labor-I; labor-amus, labor-we). English poetry, to
fit words to rhyme and stress, often changes to a Latin-like word order.

St. Joseph Parish Religious Education
 ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS.
Students have come back from Christmas break ready to work hard in the new year! Since we have recently begun
the Year of Mercy, students are learning the Salve Regina by memory and are reciting it daily during our morning prayer time. Parents and teachers are utilizing the website www.pdxmercy.org for resources, prayers and events throughout our Archdiocese in conjunction with the Year of Mercy. We are working with the Religious Education department
on a parent night, teaching parents about the Theology of the Body program for their children. As a school, we believe
our parents are the primary educators of their children, but we want to help parents have all the tools they need to raise
young men and women of faith. In addition to working with students and parents to build faith, we want to build community. On February 6 we will host a family auction night in the Parish Center. This is a free evening where families
can come see and purchase class projects, baskets, faith based items and other family friendly items. Our hope is that
this night is not just a fundraiser, but a night to build community among friends in our parish and school. All are invited
to attend!
For more information on curriculum, auction, or to see our wish list, please see our website: www.stjosephchurch.com/

Faith Tid-Bit:
We are living in a culture that has pushed aside the dignity of the human person—what a tragedy that people are seen as objects and not the
wonderful gifts they truly are. I am so thankful for the leadership of our church standing firm on the dignity of the human person from conception
to natural death.
"Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being
must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life." Catechism of the Catholic Church 2270
"...at the origin of every human being there is not something haphazard or chance, but a loving plan of God." Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
"Give us the grace - When the sacredness of life before birth is attacked, to stand up and proclaim that no one ever has the authority to destroy
unborn life." St. John Paul II

tienen vino”.
A Dios no le gusta hacer milagros solo.
