DAN AND JULIE BERKOS RAISE FUNDS FOR CWNAS

Dan and Julie Berkos of Mauston, recently hosted a holiday brunch to raise funds for the Carl W.
Nelson Animal Shelter (CWNAS). The brunch raised a total of $4000.00 for the shelter. All proceeds
from the brunch will go to the CWNAS building fund. We are very grateful to Dan and Julie for helping
raise money for the building.
Beer, Wine and Cheese Taster Coming Soon
Block your calendars for the April 24th Beer, Wine and
Cheese Tasting at the Aquarian Garden in New Lisbon. This
CWNAS fundraiser will be held from 11am – 6pm. Anyone

TWO PUMPKIN BASHES, TWO GREAT WAYS TO HELP CWNAS

This year Mauston had two Pumpkin Bashes on the weekend of October 24 & 25 . The Original was moved to
the County Fair Grounds and the Country stayed at the Red Ridge Ranch. The shelter was fortunate to be at both
functions. The weather improved as the weekend went on but it was still cold for October.
The Original had an information table, donated $1 program a get a chance for a gift, cats & kittens for adoption,
a dog from Dog’s Rule for adoption, kitty toys & calendars for sale. Beautiful baskets were put together by Lorrie
Dewar, the CWNAS Crafts for Critters Coordinator. We also had a Packer Clock as a gift. This program made the
building fund $230.
The winners of the Donate $1 Program are: Christmas Basket-Kathy Turner, New Puppy Basket-Mark Messer,
New Kitty Basket-Carla Powell, New Baby Basket-Eliza Wells, Mom’s Day In Basket-Tom Miles, Chocoholic BasketMark Messer, Harris the Lion Cookie Basket-Bill Thompson & the Packer Clock went to a very happy 10 year old
boy Reed Miller.

Castle Rock Realty’s Sharon Halverson had a Pie & Cookie Baking Contest on Sunday, October 25 .at the
Country Pumpkin Bash and donated the proceeds from the sale to our shelter. Board member John Dalla Valle was
one of the judges for the cookie contest. while board members Kathy Storandt and Jan Brendle braved the
weather and sold pieces of pie & cookies to the visitors. The shelter received $112.25 for about 3 hours of work.
Both Pumpkin Bashes netted the shelter $496.50. A special thank you to Lorrie Dewar, Rosemary & Bruce
Aney, Deb Flint, John Dalla Valle, Ann June, Jan Brendle, Kathy Storandt and the two volunteers from our volunteer
list Cindy O’Donnell and Mary Murray & her exchange students.
Three kittens ,Buster, Opal, and Patches, and Boss, the dog from Dogs Rule, got adopted. This was a very
successful weekend for CWNAS.

Sibyl is a 2 year old blue-gray cat. She
is a very beautiful cat that is spayed
and up to date with her shots. She is
very calm and not afraid of things. She
likes being brushed and didn't mind
getting a bath at her foster home.

These four little littermates are about 2 months old and ready for adoption! They are all
healthy, energetic, and as sweet, as sweet, can be. They are all up to date on shots
and will come with a certificate for spaying or neutering.
Schulz is a very sweet boy, although a little shy at first. He is a black
and white long hair, about 1 year old and very playful. He has been
socialized with the other cats and dogs in his foster home. As you
can see by his picture, Schulz is a mighty handsome cat, with
unusual markings and a big, bushy tail. Schulz has been in foster
care for over a year and really needs someone to give him a forever
home.
Sunday is an affectionate little girl who is gentle
and loving. She is about 4-5 months old and
has the sweetest disposition ever. She has
adjusted well at her foster. She gets along well
with the other cats and dogs and children.
Sunday would make a wonderful family pet.

DIRECT MAILING GOES TO POST OFFICE ON DECEMBER 7
The culmination of 3 months work, by 13 volunteers, ended on
December 7, when just under 13,000 pieces of mail were taken to
the post office. Every December CWNAS produces a bulk mailing
which is mailed to every address in Juneau County.
County residents who receive the mailing may not realize just
how much effort goes into getting the mailing into their mailbox.
The whole process starts in early September when the tri-fold brochure that is included
in the mailing, is designed and then reviewed by the board at the September meeting.
In October the envelopes, labels, and paper are ordered and an address file containing
all of Juneau County’s current addresses is purchased. When the envelopes and paper are
received, they are taken to the printer where they are turned into 13,000 self-addressed
return envelopes, 13,000 # 10 envelopes, and 13,000 donation inserts. The board also
reviews and approves the final tri-fold brochure at the October meeting and 13,000
colored tri-fold brochures are ordered from the printer. Labels are printed from the
purchased address file.
After the materials are printed, volunteers pick them up from the printers and deliver
them to the shelter house for distribution to more volunteers for stuffing. A visit to the
post office to pick up 40 mailing trays and 40 tray covers and the appropriate postal paper
work is next. Two volunteers then divide the materials and postal trays, and they are
given to more volunteers who take them home to stuff, seal, label, and count the envelopes.
After volunteers stuff, count, label, and place the envelopes into the postal trays, a
process that takes about 2 weeks, they are delivered back to the shelter house where a
volunteer sorts the trays by zip code and fills out the paper work for the post office.
Finally, all 13,000 pieces are loaded up and driven to the post office for mailing.
CWNAS depends on the annual direct mailing to bring in much needed revenue to
support its mission to help homeless animals and to provide spay and neutering and
educational services to Juneau County.

Meet Mac, a beautiful six year old
female gray tabby who is spayed
and declawed. Mac’s owner is one
of our elderly client who would like
to find a good home for her,
because she can no longer care for
her. Mac is a little shy at first,
but warms up as soon as she knows
she’s safe. She has been tested
for feline leukemia and has had
her rabies shot.
India and Jo Jo belong to one of our
Elderly Assistance clients who is no longer
able to care for them. They are about 4
months old. They are black and white
tuxedo cats and they would be the purrfect choice for you. India and Jo Jo are
very bonded and our client would like to see
them adopted together. She will give them
away to a good home.
WINTER CAN BE TOXIC TO FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS
Wisconsin winters can be harsh on pets, but did you know that it can be toxic
too? Road salt that is used to melt ice from sidewalks and roads can get caught
in paw pads and fur and may make animals sick. Dogs and cats will lick the
salt from their fur and paws. If they ingest enough, it can upset their digestive
systems, causing vomiting and diarrhea.
The best way to prevent an animal getting sick is to wash its paws when it gets home from a
walk. Pet-friendly salt is available in stores and is clearly labelled on the bag.
The other cold-weather toxic hazard is vehicle anti-freeze, which attracts animals by its sweet
taste. Make sure any spills are wiped up immediately because it takes only a small amount to
kill a cat or dog.
