August 2016 - Westbrook Elks
August 2016
Message from your Exalted Ruler…
LODGE OFFICERS
2016-2017
Greetings to all Lodge #1784 members!
EXALTED RULER
Rick Sheldon
The summer season is flying by. It’s already August,
where did the time go?
Over the 4th of July weekend I attended the Elks National
Convention in Houston, Texas. It was a great time and
I learned a lot about the Grand Lodge and how they work.
I met a lot of Elks from around the country and made

many new friends.
The lodge held its Lobster Fest on July 17th. It was a great success again.
I would like to thank Dave Malazzi and Paul Champlin for their hard work.
also, I want to thank all the great volunteers who helped make it a great
event.
It’s the time of year when we hold our annual raffle, so if you haven’t
already bought tickets, don’t wait until we run out.
We are moving forward with the bar expansion. We retained an architect and
have already gotten our A-1 and A-2 survey which he needed to design the
footprint of the expansion. When he completes that, we’ll post the proposed
design in the lobby so the members can review it. If you have any questions
you can talk to me or one of the other officers.
Coming up in August is our Beach Jam for Breast Cancer on the 13 th, the trip
to Saratoga on the 20th, the golf tournament on the 22nd, and our raffle will be
on September 5th.
I would like to thank all the great volunteers who make this lodge one of the
best. In closing, I would like to congratulate Elk of the Month
Beverly Dahlstrom who helps with the Antlergram and worked with Rex to
get the raffle tickets in the mail. Great job Bev!

Veterans Corner…….August 2016
Thanks to all members that attended or worked our Summer BBQ for
Veterans. The Manstan Band was even better than their usual terrific
performance as they prepared a special treat playing il Silencio, an
expanded version of Taps. The New London Chapter of the National
Sojourners presented their updated version of their Flag Building
Program, bring it forward to current actions. Two pillows donated by
Mrs. Betty Travisano and two Lap quilts made by her sister, Shirley
Crahan of hot Springs AR, were given to four lucky Guests from the
VA and ESPN Veterans once again brought many items to pass out to
our Vets. The Food was great our support from the Patriot Guard, Boy/
Cub/Girl Scouts as well as the Civil Air Patrol was Fantastic. We had a
last minute addition of a Flyover arranged by Committee Member,
Bruce Fagan, which was wonderful on the ground, but I failed to contact Westbrook Police that we were going to do it so they came by to
remind me that it would be helpful to let them know in advance. They
had about 50 calls by people thinking it was a drone of some sort.
Thanks again to each person that provided help.
Our next program will be our First Veterans Ball, September 11, from
1:00 PM until 3:00 PM This program is not sponsored by membership
but will be a pay in advance event with Choice of food. Attendance
will by limited to Westbrook Elks Lodge Members who are Service
Veterans and their dates. We will have dinner (beef, fish, or fowl)
dancing to Manstan Band as well as Guest Speaker James L. Streeter,
Forensics Scientist.
The ENF Corner
Elks National Foundation
Thanks to our generous members helping the Lodge make it’s
2015/2016 Per Capita Goal, we have received the $2000.00
Gratitude Grant. From the Elks National Foundation.
Again this year the Westbrook Lodge # 1784 will be donating
$1500.00 to the Shoreline Soup Kitchen based in Old Saybrook
and $500.00 to the Estuary Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels
program. These are two excellent organizations that provide much
needed help to the people in our local communities. As Elks, we
have an obligation to help our communities and I am proud that
our membership continues to do great work in this area.
From the Officers of the Westbrook Lodge # 1784 and myself as
your ENF Chairman, thank you for your support.
Fraternally Yours,
Jack Barnhart ENF Chairman.
