Administration
Lance Brooks was elected the Club‟s 23rd President at the 113th Annual General Meeting.
Unfortunately, very shortly thereafter, personal circumstances led to Lance‟s resignation.
In the absence of a President, John Hardgrove continued to chair the Management Committee
meetings. Ian Willis continued as Secretary and Sasi Sasitharan as Treasurer. They were joined on the
Committee by Patricia Ashley, Brian Ashmore, Hilary Coolican, David O‟Neil, Mark Russell and
Wendy Stead.
The Club is indebted to all of the above for their efforts.
The administrative tasks were added to this year with the introduction of a 6th grade side. The
introduction of this side was a great success, as shall be set out later in this report.
Functions
The season commenced with a bang from an administrative/social point of view, with the Sports
Lunch on 22 August 2008.
Geoff Laing and John Hardgrove were to the forefront in organising this and Tricia lent great support
on the day.
At the end of the season the Club held its second annual trivia night at West Ashfield Bowling Club.
Despite the weather Gods conspiring against us another successful night was held.
In particular, our thanks to Wendy, Hilary and Tricia for their organisation of this night.
Special thanks to Manjot Singh for his great effort in motivating the players to donate a large number
of prizes for winning tables and the Raffle. He also was a popular and successful MC for the evening.
The final major event for the Club was the Presentation Night on 21 May. Once again, Tricia Ashley,
John Hardgrove and Nick Ashley played a leading role in organising this spectacular success. Hilary
Coolican and Wendy Stead assisted on the night. Cricket NSW visitors have commented that this event
is undoubtedly the most professional that any Club in Sydney is able to mount.
For the first time all of the Club‟s premier awards were announced in combination with the Mal
Gorham Medal.

and we look forward to the upcoming stages of the development.
Our thanks to Steve McClue and Kent Sheldon for their commitment and excellence in scoring for the
top two grades.
Whilst remaining on the Committee Mark Russell continued his great work in the canteen that has
developed a high profile “name” amongst the cricket community.
Our thanks are also extended to Matt Welfare for his assistance with the 5th and 6th Grade sides. The
Club hopes to involve more past players in assisting the lower grade teams over the coming seasons.
Chairman of Selectors
It was great this season to welcome back Wayne “Rabbi” Levy as Chairman of Selectors.
Wayne came into the position quite close to the start of the season and did a fine job in facilitating,
organising and heading up the selection process.
Wayne played with the Club from 1969 to 1994, scoring 5,648 runs. A true stalwart, it was great to
have him back involved and all are hopeful he will remain with us for years to come.

Grants
Our continued thanks are extended to Wests Ashfield Leagues for their valuable sponsorship grant.
Wests Ashfield Leagues‟ support is essential to our survival and we remain deeply indebted to them.
All Club members enjoy a healthy relationship with the driving forces behind Wests Ashfield Leagues
– Peter Hardgrove (Chairman) and Andy Timbs (General Manager).
Wests‟ grant extended to administration, junior development and the Michael Clarke Scholarship.
Michael Clarke Scholarship
At our Presentation Night following the season the 2008 Michael Clarke Scholarship recipient was
named – Joe Mennie.
Joe has come to us from Coffs Harbour and Newcastle. Joe was an outstanding junior cricketer who
has won selection in representative teams all the way through, culminating in his selection for NSW
Country in late 2008.
We look forward to Joe‟s development and express our gratitude to Wests Ashfield for their assistance
to him in establishing himself in Sydney.
Like many of our young cricketers Joe is not only the recipient of the Scholarship but works at Wests
Ashfield Leagues.
Ashfield Council
Ken Gainger and his team at Ashfield continue to do all they can to make Pratten Park and the Club
thrive.
This season Ashfield Council continued their contract with Green Options. Somewhat ironically, a
cricketer from another Club – Liam Zammit from St George – was the groundsman.
Liam did an outstanding job in difficult circumstances when a fungus attacked the square. The
concern, expertise and hard work of the Council and Green Options resulted in the fungus being well
and truly defeated and the grass returning to the deck after Christmas.

Canterbury Council
Our gratitude is also extended to Canterbury Council for their ongoing efforts at both Punchbowl and
Blick. Punchbowl featured in the top of the ground ratings for lower grade grounds and Blick
improved in its rating over the latter part of the season.
Canterbury Council is always cooperative and willing to assist.
Coaching
This season saw a change in our coaching personnel.
Neil D‟costa moved to a full time focus on high performance leaving space for a new head coach.
The Club contracted Peter Jackson. Both parties contemplated an initial three year initial term for
Peter.
Peter embarked upon a very conscientious and dedicated approach in building to the start of the
season.
A highlight of the pre-season was the camp at Narrabeen which was a great success.
Peter‟s hard work drew pleasing results with the Club performing very well up until Christmas.
The Club was very disappointed when Peter provided notice after the season that he wouldn‟t be
continuing with the Club for the 2009/10 season.
The Club wishes Peter and his family well for the future.
Peter was supported throughout the year by John Hurley and Gavan Twining. Jeff Warland, and Toby
Hynes were also of invaluable assistance with the Green Shield program.
Gavan‟s fielding sessions were greatly appreciated by all players. He remains enormously respected
and admired.
Our coaching resources were bolstered towards the end of the season with the addition of Subroto
Banerjee.
Subroto, who played a Test for India, brought a great deal of learning, common sense and passion to
assisting with the coaching of our fast bowlers.
Neil D‟costa also led the charge with the development of the Canterbury and Western Suburbs Cricket
Association junior rep teams. In close cooperation with Gary Peats Neil did an outstanding job on
behalf of Wests. The junior rep teams have improved significantly over the last few years, a great
tribute to Neil and Gary. The Club looks forward to supporting the junior rep teams again in the
upcoming season.

Playing performance
As suggested above, the playing performance was very much a story of two halves.
At Christmas time both in First Grade and the Club Championship, the Club was entrenched in the top
ten.
In addition, every side had some prospect of making the finals and in particular Third Grade, Fourth
Grade and Sixth Grade were well placed to finish in a high competition position.
By season‟s end we had slipped to 14th place in the Club Championship.
Sixth Grade, whose competition was not affiliated to the Sydney Cricket Association, did not gain Club
Championship points.
First Grade finished in 12th position, up from 17th the year before.
One highlight of the First Grade season was the outstanding performance in the 20/20 competition.
The team won its three rounds on the first day. It was one of the few sides in Sydney to do this.
They then travelled up to Hawkesbury for finals. After annihilating University of New South Wales
the team lost a thriller against Sydney. The match went down to the very last ball with Nick Compton
controversially given run out on the second last ball. It is fair to say the 20/20 was enjoyed by all and
the team played very well.
Second Grade came 12th, up four positions from the previous season.
Third Grade just missed the qualifying finals after a last round loss and ended 7th, up from 13th the
year before.
Fourth Grade finished in 9th position, two places down from its previous season of 7th.
Fifth Grade finished in 16th position, down two positions from 2007/08.
AW Green Shield finished in 8th position with a satisfactory four wins.
As can be seen, the performance of the individual grades were generally slightly improved. Green
Shield remained very solid but Poidevin-Gray was extremely disappointing.
The major disappointment of the season and the prime cause of the Club finishing as low as it did in
the Club championship was the Poidevin-Gray team‟s fall from 4th to 18th.
The key factor in our ultimate results, other than Poidevin-Gray, was the loss of four First Grade
batsmen at Christmas time.
The season had been planned on the expectation that Daniel Smith, Phillip Hughes and Nick Compton
(Middlesex) would play the majority of matches after Christmas.
8
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Management Report 2008/09
As circumstances unfolded, Nick was injured and had to go home, Dan had some injuries which
restricted his appearances for us to nil after Christmas and Phillip Hughes was selected to tour South
Africa with Australia.
In addition, Cory Wright, who had played one and a half seasons in the top two grades, returned to
Newcastle for work commitments.
This loss of four batsmen had a significant impact down through the grades.
The only team which was able to maintain its performance in the second half of the season was Sixth
Grade.
Whilst this grade was not affiliated with the Sydney Cricket Association, the competition is played
extremely competitively. It is known as the Metropolitan Cup
Our thanks to Mat Baldwin for leading this team. The decision to participate in the competition was
made late. Mat did an outstanding job in taking his young charges to within one run of winning the
entire competition.
The importance for us is that it gave us another level under Fifth Grade and yet another group of
enthusiastic, emerging, young Magpie cricketers.
Wests would like to congratulate the winners in the various competitions –
Club Championship – Penrith
First Grade – St George
First Grade Limited Overs – Mosman
Twenty20 Cup – Northern District
Second Grade – Sydney University
Third Grade – Gordon
Fourth Grade – Fairfield
Fifth Grade – Campbelltown
Poidevin-Gray – Bankstown
Green Shield – North Sydney
Sixth Grade – Randwick-Petersham
Women
Once again Wests supported the development and growth of women‟s cricket in the Inner West.
Wests supplied the coach for Crichit – a CricketNSW initiative that encourages women and girls to
play cricket. The girls learn the rudiments of batting, bowling and fielding in a fun atmosphere. This
very successful program is in its second year with Wests. The coach this season was Tom O‟Neil. The
girls won the competition – congratulations to them and Tom.
9
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Management Report 2008/09
By funding the venue and providing a coach who assisted women and girls to enhance their cricketing
skills, Wests was supporting the CWSCA teams in the SRGCA competition. This competition also
includes sides from St George, Sutherland and the Eastern Suburbs.
The teams were very successful in the competition and players from these sides will be going
on to both the Brewer Shield and Grade teams.
Representative players
The Club‟s representative players once again had fantastic seasons.
Michael Clarke continued with his excellent form for Australia and Phillip Hughes burst onto the
international scene.
Michael enjoyed excellent series against the West Indies, India, New Zealand and South Africa in
Australia. Michael also played a significant role in the two one series, winning in South Africa. Few
who saw his 68 on day one of the first test match will ever forget its technical excellence. Australia
were in dire straights and the ball moving significantly when Michael produced his classic innings.
Phillip Hughes became Australia‟s 408th and Western Suburbs 23rd Test player when he debuted in the
first test in South Africa.
Phillip had a dominant season in Shield and first class cricket. Once Matthew Hayden announced his
retirement Phillip‟s credentials made him an irresistible selection. After an inglorious first innings
dismissal Phillip showed his class with a second innings 75 followed up by 115 and 160 in the second
Test. On completing those scores he became the youngest player ever to score two centuries in the one
Test Match.
Along with that record Phillip currently is the youngest player ever to score 100 in the Shield final and
holds the record highest percentage number of runs scored by an individual out of the total for his
team in a first class match in Australia. The commencement of his career has been extraordinary and
we congratulate him and his family and wish him well for the future.
Daniel Smith had another strong season for New South Wales. He played some fine innings including
his top score of 96 against South Australia at the SCG.
A return of 407 Shield runs at 31.31 combined with 172 Ranger Cup runs at 28.67 represented a very
healthy batting season. Dan also kept excellently throughout the entire season.
The Club celebrated another first class debut when Mitch Starc represented New South Wales against
Western Australia at the SCG towards the end of the season.
Mitch bowled with significant pace and great control, catching the eye of no lesser judge than Steve
Waugh who declared Mitch an “Australian prospect”.
10
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Management Report 2008/09
Mitch has worked very hard at his game since joining us in Green Shield and we are all extremely
excited for him and his family and look forward to his development in the years to come.
Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW, Sydney Cricket Association
Thanks to all these bodies for their ongoing support of grade cricket.
Roy Formica continues to be of great assistance to our Club in his role with the Sydney Cricket
Association.
It must be recorded that our Club was disappointed with the approach taken by Cricket Australia and
Cricket NSW to the Long Live Club Cricket day during the past season.
What commenced as an excellent idea with great success seems to have diminished in importance for
Cricket Australia over the years.
Poor scheduling and communication from the superior bodies meant that inadequate planning time
was provided to the Club.
In the end, Michael Clarke attended Pratten on a rain and windswept Friday afternoon in late
November.
A small but enthusiastic crowd of young players, together with their parents, enjoyed the company of
Michael in and under the Davidson-Simpson Grandstand.
The occasion was a very special occasion. The weather had kept many away but Michael‟s generosity
in coming out on such an evening meant that those who were present shared a very intimate
experience with him.
As always, Michael communicated brilliantly with the adoring fans.
Little did the young cricketers realise the importance of the occasion given that Phillip Hughes was
also present and interviewed. Indeed, the Club conveyed to the young players that Phillip Hughes
was the next “star on the horizon”!
Whilst Michael‟s approach meant that the Club was able to make the event very special for a small
number of players, the Club encourages Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW to give ample notice of
and plan well for future Long Live Cricket days so that a genuine opportunity is provided for local
cricketers, in particular young male and female cricketers, to watch the superstars play.
Certainly from our Club‟s point of view it would be a special occasion if Phillip and Michael were both
to play at Pratten in a fixture every season.
The Club assisted with Cricket Australia‟s and Cricket NSW‟s promotion of the Women‟s World Cup
by providing training facilities for the New Zealand ladies team.
Our thanks to Brian Ashmore for organising a willing band of players to help make this possible.

Vale Stan Sismey (Life Member)
Just prior to going to print the Club learnt of the passing of one of its true legends, Stan Sismey. Stan,
who was an outstanding wicket keeper, played for Wests from 1938 until 1952. He played in the
Australian Services games following World War II and played 30-odd matches for New South Wales.
Following his playing career Stan became a much admired and respected administrator and selector.
Stan figures prominent in the Club History – Cricket In Black and White – and his interview by Max
Bonnell in the DVD which accompanies the Club History provides some great insight into the Club‟s
history.
Our best wishes are extended to his wife and family.
Vale Don Allum
During the year Don Allum also passed away.
Don scored 4,593 runs for the Club, including in excess of 2,000 in Second Grade.
He played in the exciting 1959/60 final victory against St George.
The Allums association with Wests extends over many generations and our heartfelt sympathies are
with the family.

CLUB PERFORMANCE
The performance of the Club (in terms of Club Championship points) and our top three grades
improved slightly in season 2008/09. The following is a comparison between the 2007/08 and 2008/09

Our First Grade side were semi-finalist in 20/20 competition going down by 1 run to Sydney in the
semi-final. The Club this season also entered a 6th Grade team in the Metropolitan Cup comprising
young developing players with the side going down in the final to Randwick–Petersham.
When analysing the results of our sides: - up-to Christmas all our sides were in a position for semifinal honours. However, our performances after Christmas fell away. The other disappointing factor
was the number of games during the season across the Club we lost by less than 30 runs or 2 wickets.
Overall, our bowling throughout the grades was strong but it was our batting and fielding which let
the Club down.
The AW Green Shield after losing its first three games won its last four games and finished a win away
from top six honours. Majority of the players in this squad were U15 so all goes well for next season in
this competition.

Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Coaching Overview 2008/09 (continued)
As far as our coaching program was concerned during the off –season the focus was to improve the
overall fitness and technical skills of our players. All players were encouraged to undertake a core
strength/off-season fitness program developed by Marc Seymour at Wests Ashfield Leagues Club.
There was a small group of players who worked with Marc during this period and it was of no
surprise that these players were free from injury and individually had good seasons.
A small group of players were chosen to be part of the Club‟s High Performance squad working with
Neil D‟costa starting in July. The sessions involved mental, physical and technical sessions conducted
at Activate Sports Centre.
The Club‟s Pre-Season activities began in August and comprised of mid-week sessions at Activate
Cricket Centre. These sessions at Activate involved net sessions, speed and agility activities and 2.5km
time trial course that players were required to complete. Players were encouraged during these
sessions to access the ball machine to work on certain aspects of their game. Our Club Fitness Program
with Marc Seymour continued to operate during the week from Wests Ashfield facility.
Saturday morning sessions were held outdoors at Airey Park, Strathfield. The Airey Park sessions
combined net training, fitness and fielding. Fitness and fielding continues to be an area in which
players and the club need to focus on to improve its performance substantially. Both mid-week and
Saturday sessions were well attended by the players during this period.
The Club this season held a pre-season camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen held on the
weekend of the 22 August. The pre-season camp provided the opportunity for players to interact and
focus their thoughts on the up-coming season. The pre-season activities were a combination of
physical activities, net sessions and group workshops with the theme of the camp being “Emphasising
Teams”.
The Club played a trial against Bankstown in the week preceding the round 1 of the grade competition
and our First Grade side played a 20/20 match against Northern District in preparation for the 20/20
competition. During this period also selection trials for the AW Green Shield were held and a squad
was selected.
14
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Coaching Overview 2008/09 (continued)
Once the season started the focus was on net sessions two nights per week- Wednesday and Thursday
from 5.30pm to 8pm.The coaches were Peter Jackson, John Hurley and Gavan Twining. We also
utilized the coaching services of specialist coaches during the season such as Gavin Fingleson (CNSW),
Bob Simpson, Subroto Banerjee and Alan Mantle from Enhance Mind Performance. The sessions up to
Christmas were generally well attended but as soon as sides were no longer a chance of making the
finals attendance in those grades fell away.
Neil D‟costa was also responsible for coaching our AW Green Shield squad, supported by some of our
Wests players with these sessions held at Activate or at Pratten Park. The Club was also responsible for
organising the Canterbury & Western Suburbs CA Junior Representative teams. This involved
coordinating selection trials, coaching and attending Sunday representative matches. The coaches were
Western Suburbs DCC players who had completed at least level 1 accreditation. 2008/2009 season
was the most successful junior representative season for Canterbury West Association for many years.
In conclusion although the results don‟t reflect Club expectations, there were signs from a number of
our younger players that with continued development the Club has a good base to build and achieve
improved results in future seasons.

A K Davidson Award
Player of the Year
The Alan Davidson Award is the highest, most prestigious and most coveted award annually
presented by the Club. Instituted in memory of one of the Magpies‟ greatest ever players, this award
is conferred on the player deemed by the Committee to have best fulfilled the criteria of demeanour,
dress, team spirit, sportsmanship, performance, punctuality and conscientiousness.
Tim Sallway
It is pleasing that a person who has been with the Club for a number of seasons, suffered injuries,
fought his way up through the grades has taken out the Club‟s most prestigious award. Tim is a real
club-man and fulfils all the criteria for this award.
In his first season in the top grade Tim was an outstanding success given his limited opportunities.
Tim surprised all with his performances this season and had many experienced First Grade batsmen in
trouble with his pace, late swing and a really good straight short ball. His 29 wickets at less than 19
testaments to an outstanding debut season.
Tim has always been one of the few players to volunteer his services to ensure that the little tasks
required to run a club effectively and efficiently are completed. Given that Tim has played in all grades
within the Club he maintains his interest in all performances throughout the Club.
Congratulations to a most deserving award winner.

Most Runs for the Season
This award is given in honour of the achievements of Wests‟ premier run scorer. The winner
of this award is the player who scored the most runs in the season irrespective of the amount
of times he took to the crease.
Keegan Luiters
The Club can thank the UK Consulate for declining and procrastinating so long over Keegan‟s
work visa. Keegan, expecting this to be granted soon into the season, decided that he would
help out in Third Grade in the interim.
Keegan is a class batsman and this showed early on. Keegan scored 652 runs at 50.15
including an unbeaten 142 against Gordon. Unfortunately for Keegan the nervous nineties
seemed to strike as he also had three scores between 90 and 99. Two other scores above 50
highlighted his consistency throughout the season.
Keegan now has 2,371 runs for the Club.

Bill Russell Award
Fieldsman of the Year
This award has been donated by Mavis and Mark Russell in memory of Bill Russell, a long
time supporter and stalwart of the Club
Kabilan Bascaran
What an amazing debut season for Kabilan. Kabilan was our Green Shield keeper. He also
kept in Fifth, Fourth, Third Grades as well as Poidevin-Gray.
He played the majority of the season in Fourth Grade where he amassed 26 dismissals
including 5 stumpings in his 11 games.
Overall, in 19 games Kabilan effected 45 dismissals including 9 stumpings. He has
tremendous potential so watch out Brad and Daniel as Kabilan is certainly a higher grade
keeper in the near future.

Dave Brooks Award
Clubman of the Year
Throughout a long association with Wests, Dave Brooks always went out of his way to help
make Wests a better Club and a more enjoyable place to play cricket. This award recognises
the Club identity whose contribution has been exceptional.
Trish Ashley
This award is presented to the person(s) considered by the Committee to have made an
exceptional contribution to the Club. This award recognises service usually not over one year
but over many years.
I do not think there would be any argument with the winner this season. Trish has been the
rock upon which most of our functions have been made. It is testament to her organisational
ability and the long hours that she puts in that ensures the success of the various functions
held by the Club. Trish possesses superior organisational skills and certainly is one of those
people who just gets in and does things.
Trish has played an integral role in the ToM function, the inaugural sportsman‟s lunch, the
two trivia nights as well as organising other fund raisers for the Club.
Trish is an important member of the Committee where her input is always measured and well
respected. She undertakes the tedious job of minute taker with aplomb.
Congratulations on the award, you certainly deserve it and if there were more people like you
then running the club would only be that much easier.

A W (Abby) Green Trophy 2008/09
A W (Abby) Green Trophy
Players’ Player in the Green Shield
This award is named in tribute to AW (Abby) Green a past President of our Club for a 13 year
period between 1922 and 1935. Such was his contribution that the current Under 16
competition was named after him.
This award is for the outstanding player in the Club‟s AW Green Shield side and is decided
upon by the Committee
Nathan Brown
Nathan is a most deserving winner of the award this season. His all-round efforts during the
competition were one of reasons for the success of the side. Nathan averaged 87.50 with the
bat amassing over 350 runs during the competition. His tally included four scores in excess of
50 and his 96 against Sutherland was a joy to watch. Nathan also took 7 wickets at 24.29 and
created pressure on opposing batsmen with his extremely fast completion of overs
Nathan also played 11 games in Fourth Grade where he scored 276 runs at 30.67 including an
unbeaten 173 against Randwick-Petersham.

Bernie O’Neil Award
Most Improved Under 21 Player
Former President, Bernie O‟Neil, donated this award to Wests in order to recognise the
season‟s Most Improved Player(s) under twenty-one years of age. This award is not designed
to be simply awarded to the young player(s) with the best results or greatest talent
Geoffrey Ashmore and Emannuel Parmakellis
It was impossible to separate these two young cricketers and therefore, for the fourth time
since the inception of the award in 1985 we have multiple winners. All have made significant
improvements to their games and their performances during 2008/09 highlight that.
It is also pleasing to see that this season we have two young bowlers who have taken the
award.
Geoffrey Ashmore
Geoffrey has certainly developed amazingly this season. Geoffrey played every grade from
sixth grade to third grade and it seemed the higher he went the more he excelled. Geoffrey
played only two games in Sixth Grade but took 7 wickets at 5.86 with a best of 4 for 19. In 29
overs he conceded only 41 runs.
In Fourth Grade Geoffrey played 6 games taking 15 wickets at 12.87 with a best of 4 for 19.
Geoffrey played only the one game in Third Grade but to say that he excelled is an
understatement. He took 6 for 35 against Randwick-Petersham in a display that excited all
that witnessed it.
Geoffrey also won the Ewen MacPherson award for the most wickets in the lower grades.
Congratulations on an excellent season and we all look forward to your future development.

Most Improved Under 21 Player
Emannuel Parmakellis
Manny is another player who just seems to improve the higher the grade he plays in. Manny
established himself in Second Grade this season with some fine displays of swing bowling.
As well as swinging the ball Manny possesses a very good slower ball that has claimed many
wickets
Manny played six games in Third grade where he took only the eight wickets at 31.88.
However, once elevated to Second Grade the real potential this youngster shone through. In
his eight games in Second grade he took 22 wickets to be the side‟s second leading wicket
taker. His best was 5 for 44 against a non-plussed Mosman outfit.
Manny was also the leading wicket-taker in the Poidevin-Gray side that struggled with the bat
hence giving few opportunities for the bowlers.
We look forward to Manny‟s continued development in the higher grades. Congratulations on
a successful season

Wally Brown Award
Best Debut Season by an Under 21 Player
This award commemorates one of Wests' longest serving and most successful players. It is awarded to
the Under 21 player judged by the Committee to have enjoyed the best debut year in grade cricket. For
the purposes of this award, a player is eligible for consideration provided that he was available for
selection in at least two-thirds of the Grade matches for the current season and not having played more
than three games in the previous season.
Suffan Hassan
Suffan played only the three games the previous season and was still of Green Shield age this season.
His statistics below highlight a superb season for someone so young.
Obviously the highlight this season were his performances in Fifth Grade with the unbeaten 128
against Eastern Suburbs the standout. He also had an unbeaten 76 against Randwick-Petersham
The Club looks forward to Suffan‟s development in the coming seasons.

This award is presented in memory of one of the Club‟s most prolific wicket takers. It is
awarded to the player taking the most wickets in the lower three grades.
Geoffrey Ashmore
This year may well be the breakthrough year for Geoffrey. He has progressed well but 08/09
saw him raise his game to the next level. His 33 wickets included only the one haul of five
wickets – against Randwick-Petersham (6-35) in Third Grade.
However, it was his consistency in picking up wickets that saw Geoffrey secure the award
from some other very talented youngsters (yes you too Gav!!!).
Continued hard work and persistence will only see him elevate himself through the grades.

Most Wickets for the Season
This award is given in memory of the Club‟s premier First Grade wicket taker. It goes to the
bowler who took the most wickets for the Club in the season.
Matthew Day
Matthew was a worthy winner of the award this year. Matthew is a bowler that always gives
him utmost and wears his heart on his sleeve. Matthew‟s 43 wickets this year with a best of 5
for 36 against Manly-Warringah was sufficient to convince Tasmanian cricket to grant him a
contract. Matthew now has 116 wickets for the Club, all bar one in First Grade.
We wish Matthew all the best in his cricketing endeavours down in the Apple Isle.

1st Grade Season Report 2008/09
The main question to be asked in analysing our performance in 2008/09 is did we under achieve
this season? Finishing seventeenth suggests that we did, considering that we won three of the first
four rounds and seven games prior to Christmas. So why did we finish so low and what were the
contributing factors?
Again this season the team struggled to win the close games. Seven runs and 5 wickets cost the
side three first innings wins totalling 18 points.
The team again only had one batsman who averaged above 35 for the season which immediately
put pressure on our bowling and fielding. With a distinct lack of runs most games, in order to
win games, we needed to take all our chances and most of our half chances. Been bowled out
three times during the season for less than 100, twice when chasing only moderate totals,
highlights the problems encountered with the bat. However, on the flip side great runs chases
against Sydney University, Sutherland and Randwick-Petersham showed our line-up was more
than capable but lacked consistency.
The bowlers, whilst creating chances, where extremely ill disciplined when it came to extras again
this season. The team averaged in excess of 11 extras a game, principally wides and no balls.
Giving the opposition extra runs and deliveries put the team at a clear disadvantage particularly
in the close games.
Most disappointing was the finish to the season where we lost our last 4 games, including
comprehensive losses against St George and Sydney.
These are a few reasons why we finished where we did. Although we had four debutants this year
and a number of new players, we still had very good players. We still had three state players. We
still had batsmen who have had 700+ run seasons in the not too distant past. We still had bowlers
with a number of seasons of First Grade experience. Our young players were still involved in
under age rep teams, which suggest some talent. So yes, we did perform below par considering
our talent.
One of the highlights of the season was our side‟s performance in the inaugural Twenty 20
competition with the side reaching the semi-finals and along the way having some outstanding
performances. Close matches were the order of the day for a majority of the competition for our
side with last ball or last over deciders against Sydney University and Sydney in the preliminary
rounds. We completely dominated University of NSW in the quarter final winning by 10 wickets
only to go down on the last ball in the semi-final against Sydney.
Congratulations to Phillip Hughes on his selection in the Australia side to tour South Africa and
England and also to Daniel Smith and Mitchell Starc for their selection in the NSW Sheffield
Shield Side.
Daniel was part of the successful NSW Twenty 20 side in a thrilling final. Whilst, Mitchell was
selected to make in his debut for the state during the season.

Grade Season Report & Player Profiles 2008/09
Finally a big thank you to our loyal band of supporters, parents and off field support staff who
were with us every step of the way during the season. On behalf of the side I would like to thank
Peter Bardsley, Rex Burns, Ian Currie, George and Lynne Day, Eddie Harling, Sue and Ben
Gorham, Steve McClue, Lisa Nimmo, Mark Russell and Richard and Joanne Smith.
Let‟s make sure next season is the year of the Magpie.
Phillip Hughes
Hughesy‟s third season of grade saw him play only three games for the Pies as he now has become an
integral member of the NSW state side. His 61 in round two against North Sydney only the start of the
success Phillip enjoyed this season. Obviously the highlight for Phillip was his selection in the touring
party to South Africa and his hundred in each innings in the second test in Durban
Daniel Smith
Daniel had a shortened season with the Pies this year due to his state commitments. He played only
the six games but managed 257 runs at 42.83 with a top score of 82 against Northern District. Daniel
surpassed 4,000 runs for the club during the current season. We look forward to Daniel continuing his
good form with the State side but unfortunately that means we will see less of Smithy in the baggy
black cap.
Matthew Day
Matt had an outstanding season in 2008/09. Matt was the side‟s leading wicket taker with 43 wickets
at an average of 22.74. Although taking 43 wickets he only took one five wicket haul which was against
Manly-Warringah was only highlights his consistency throughout the season. Combined with his
efforts with the ball Matt also scored 345 runs with a top score of 83 against Fairfield-Liverpool. At the
end of the season we learnt that Matthew had secured a contract with Tasmania – we wish him all the
success in his cricketing endeavours in the Apple Isle.
Brad Rasool
Brad joined us from Gordon and had an exceptional first season with the Club. Brad proved to be a
highly resilient batsman that added some starch to the batting line-up. He scored 460 runs at an
average of 27.06 with four scores in excess of fifty and a top score of 77 against Blacktown. Combined
with this Brad effected 35 dismissals including six stumpings. Brad was also an integral part of our
success in our Twenty 20 campaign.
Tim Sallway
Tim had a breakthrough debut season in the top grade. Tim has worked his way through the grades at
the Pies and took his opportunity with both hands. Although, bowling considerably less overs that
some of the other bowlers Tim captured 29 wickets at the incredible average of 18.62. Tim‟s pace and
consistency was his strength with a best bowling effort of 3 for 24. Tim efforts will see him as an
integral part of the side next season. Congratulations on an excellent debut season in the top grade.
Tim‟s efforts were rewarded by the announcement he was the winner of the AK Davidson award this
season.

Ross Di Bartolo
Ross and Manjot proved to be an effective combination taking 46 wickets between them. Ross finished
with 20 wickets at 27.65 with a best of 3 for 3. Ross continues to develop his off-spinners and will be a
force in the year to come. Top man to have in the team.
Manjot Singh
Jot‟s second season as a saw his consolidate on his initial season with the club. Jotty is an extremely
competitive player and takes great pride in his performances. In fact Jotty had an excellent season
being the side‟s leading run scorer with 545 runs at 36.33 with a top score of an unbeaten 89 against
Randwick-Petersham. Combine that with his 26 wickets at 22.42 and 12 catches and you can easily
appreciate the extent of his role this season. Congratulations on an excellent season.
Mitchell Starc
Mitch‟s second season in the top grade hampered by an ankle injury early in the season and with NSW
Cricket monitoring his injury we saw restricted appearance from Mitch this season. However, he
managed to play 11 games and taking 15 wickets in the process. At the end of the season Mitch made
his debut for the state and we look forward to Mitch wearing the blue cap much more next season.
Marc Seymour
Marc had a fine all-round season this year and was an integral part of the team. He scored 406 runs at
22.56 with a top score of 68 against Sutherland. He also had two other scores in excess of fifty. Marc
proved to be a rather handy change bowler capturing 17 wickets in the process as well as taking 12
catches. Marc is a highly competitive cricketer who wears his heart on his sleeve but can be
misunderstood at times.
Shariful Islam
Shariful was another player in his debut year in the top grade. Shariful is an aggressive batsman
and began the season well with his top score of 95 against Gordon in round three. However, a
nasty injury suffered at Hawkesbury while in the nets curtailed his season and confidence. We
look forward to Shariful returning to the form and potential we know he has. Hard work will pay
dividends Shariful you just need to be patient.
Jason Hughes
Jason fought his way into the top grade through weight of runs and consistent performances in
the lower grades. This form continued in the top grade where he amassed 258 runs from his eight
games with a top score of 93 against Fairfield-Liverpool. Jason is a gritty batsman whose
determination and value put on his wicket is something others throughout the club can learn
from.
Evan Dix
Evan joined us from Sydney this season and would have been disappointed with his season.
Although scoring 256 runs with a top score of 52 against Randwick-Petersham I am sure he
wanted much more. Evan is highly competitive in a quiet way but fiercely determined and I am
sure we will see much better things from him in 2009/10. Always willing to help with the little
things that needs to be done before and after the match. Great guy to have in the side.

Nick Compton
Nick joined us from the UK this season and immediately had an impact. The name has the
pedigree and the genes were certainly transferred down the tree. Nick is a class opening batsman
and showed his skill in all facets of the game. He was an integral part of our success in the Twenty
20 competition. Unfortunately an injury during this competition saw his season curtailed early. In
the interim Nick scored 339 runs in his ten appearances for the Club with two centuries and a top
score of 118 against Hawkesbury.
Joe Mennie
Joe joined the Club half way through the season from the bush and quickly showed us he will be a
player to watch in the years ahead. Joe has the potential to be an all-rounder that will significantly
contribute to the success of the team in the future. Joe is an aggressive quick bowler and more
than capable batsman and as he adapts to life in Sydney so will his performances improve.
Other Players
Thanks to the other players, Simon McInerney, Nick Pryde, Ash Squire, Jonathon Turner and Cory
Wright who played at various times throughout the season. Your contributions were highly
regarded and it was a pleasure to have you in the side. We look forward to more consistent
appearances in the top grade in the year ahead.

2nd Grade Season Report 2008/09
A great opportunity presented itself in 2008/09 for Wests 2nd Grade and hopes were high for a very
successful season. On paper we would have one of the stronger 2nd Grade teams in the competition
and a finals berth was all the talk prior to the season starting.
Unfortunately it wasn‟t until round 5 that we put our first win on the board with a comprehensive
outright win over Eastern Suburbs. This was followed by a good performance to beat Blacktown in the
next round, and things were looking up. Another loss in round 7 and a draw due to rain had us
languishing down the table in 15th position with the hopes of a finals berth all but washed away. The
final game before Christmas saw us take apart UNSW in a one-dayer and receive 2 bonus points that
kept us in touch with the top six. Disappointingly, we all seemed to suffer from a Christmas hangover
and lost the next three games after the break that again put us out of touch with the top half of the
ladder.
A pleasing end to the season saw us beat Mosman, St George and eventual semi finalists Manly. These
wins demonstrated the potential in the club, with many young players making their second grade
debuts in these games.
Consistency with the bat proved to be the greatest problem this season. Generally the loss of wickets in
quick succession would take us from being in a strong position to being in danger of being knocked
over cheaply. Interestingly, the games that we won saw us have multiple batting partnerships of more
than 50 runs each. As the below statistic show, and in comparison with other clubs in the competition,
we finished 15th of 20 in batting statistics as a team, and 4th of 20 in the bowling averages.

Consistency within the make up of the team also caused a few difficulties this season. 28 individuals
played 2nd Grade this season and it was difficult to gather momentum as a group when new players
were introduced regularly. Form, injuries, state call ups and unavailability were contributors to the
continual rotation through the team.
A few highlights for the season –
Dono scoring his maiden 2nd grade century and getting run out on what we thought was 99. No
clap from his teammates for his ton.
Pato coming up from 3‟s against Sydney (Balmain/UTS Balmain) and looking very comfortable
batting brilliantly before falling for 98
Parmy single handedly knocking over Mosman with some incredible swing bowling.

Panucci facing 4 balls at the end of our first one dayer and going into the sheds 17*

2nd Grade Season Report 2008/09
Prydey picking up his first second grade wicket against Randy Petes
Congratulations to Jason Hughes making his first grade debut after many good performances
in 2nd grade.
Macca scoring 424runs at 30.29, Hughesy averaging 89 with the bat before getting selected in 1s
JT was a constant threat opening the bowling, having another stellar year taking 28 wickets at
16.
Parmy taking 22 wickets at 16.23
In all it was a disappointing season for us. We saved our best performances for last with a young and
inexperienced team and won the last 3 on the trot. Hopefully we can take those positives into next
season and become the force in the competition that we promise to be.
Appreciation
Finally it would be remiss of me not to thank those individuals who make a captain‟s job that much
easier. Firstly to Kent Sheldon our scorer who tramped all over Sydney watching us and keeping the
books in order – your efforts are very much appreciated
To Test Match, Sue, Ben and Lisa for providing the best canteen going around, including some of the
those interesting cordial mixes – it is lucky only you know what goes in them!!! I know all the lads
appreciate your efforts.
Lastly but by no means least a special thank you to Testy, not only for his work in the canteen but the
tireless hours pre and post match ensuring everything is clean, in order, organised etc. Thanks mate
See you all at pre season

Paul Donovan
Great to see the improvement in Dono this season. Paul is certainly establishing himself as an opening
batsman of the future. His hundred against Blacktown only a glimpse of his true potential Paul also
had a good PG‟s campaign and he will only benefit from this season. A great team man who provided
his teammates with a variety of comical moments both off and on the field.
Ash Squire
As predicted last season 08/09 was certainly a far better year for the squirrel with the bat. In his nine
games in Second‟s Ash scored 267 runs at 26.70 with an impressive 67 against UNI of NSW and
another 50 against Sydney University. 13 wickets at 26 with his leg spinners made Ash a very valuable
member of the side.
Simon McInerney
Macca made 424 runs for the year, averaging just over 30, with four scores over 50. Just do not tell
Macca there is a break in play coming up. A number of dismissals just prior to a break cut back his
efforts this season. Macca is damaging either opening or coming in the middle order, he played some
important innings for the team. He is capable of some breathtaking play and with greater consistency
and application next year could see him rewarded with a permanent First Grade position
Jonathon Turner
Another solid season for JT. JT will be looking for more consistency next year to gain a spot in first
grade. A genuine all-rounder, JT performed a number of roles with both bat and ball throughout the
season. Another who‟s competitive nature ensures he gives 110%. Certainly the highlight for the
season was his fine all round performance against UNI of NSW taking 5 for 26 and following that up
with an unbeaten 53.
Nick Pryde
Nick probably had a season he would like to forget. Nick has more potential than the numbers suggest
this season. Keep working at your game and things will turn around – everyone has a season like this.
It is how you respond to the challenges that really counts and I am sure you will bounce back. Always
a great guy to have in the team.
Jason Hughes
Not to be outdone by his little brother Jason‟s early season form saw him elevated to First Grade where
he performed excellently. In seven innings in Second Grade Jason was unbeaten on four occasions,
passing fifty each time. Weight of runs, 267 runs at 89.00 certainly could not ignored by the selectors.
Congratulation on a fine season
Vaibhav Rastogi
Great to have Rusty back in the club. Proved to be a valuable all-round player – averaging 25 with the
bat including a 68 against Sydney and 13 wickets at 32.15 with a best of 5-54 against Sydney
University. Rusty is a wily left arm spinner who uses flight and changes of pace to great effect. We
look forward to bigger and better returns in 09/10.

Terence Howes
It was good to see TBag have some success in Second Grade. Terence is one of those players that you
need in your side. Mind you, do not forget to bring the sunnies for those satin whites, it can get quite
glarely late in the afternoon at Pratten. Certainly his 5 for 16 against Eastern Suburbs at Waverly Oval
was the highlight for Terence. Keep working and training hard and the rewards will continue.
Emannuel Parmakellis
Manny just keeps improving – it seems the higher the grade the better he plays. 22 wickets in Second
Grade this season at the very impressive average of 16.23 only the start of things to come. Two five
wickets hauls including a magical spell at Pratten Park against Mosman are just the beginning.
Continued hard work and dedication will result in a First Grade position in the not too distant future.
Manny is also a very clean hitter of the cricket ball and could further develop his batting which will
only improve his chances of higher selection.
Adam Turner
Hooch is always a pleasure to have in the side. He is ultra competitive and excellent keeper. In his ten
games in Second Grade this season he took 21 dismissal including four stumpings. He is also a
determined lower order batsman that puts a high price on his wicket. We hope Hooch backs up for
09/10 as he still has a lot to offer.
Players to watch
As mentioned at the beginning of the report Second Grade had 28 players through its ranks this season
so it is impossible to critique everyone. To all those other players thank you for your efforts and
congratulations on your selection in Second Grade during the season. I have selected four players that
certainly showed potential to cement a permanent Second Grade spot in the near future. They are
Vinayak Sasitharan who showed to everyone that he is a classy batsman and Anton Panucci, Luke
Miner and Faran Lamb who bowled some impressive spells.
Editorial Comment
In compiling the report Paul did not mention his own excellent season. Paul is an excellent captain
who tends to get the best out of his team. Paul again was one of the leading run-scorers in Second
Grade with 351 runs at 35.10. In his tally were three scores in excess of fifty with a top score of 84
against Mosman. Add to this 14 wickets at 21.93 with a best of 4-40 and one begins to appreciate the
contribution of Paul to the success of the team. Congratulations on another very successful season.

3rd Grade Season Report 2008/09
The Third Grade side this season contained a large dynamic of individuals. We had a varying level of
experience but we all worked together really well and that reflected our overall position of 7 th in the
competition. The reasons for our success were for two main reasons: that we were all really good
mates on and off the field and that we understood our individual roles and fulfilled them to make us a
complete side with no „gaping holes‟. The way we complemented each other‟s games we were able to
back each other up consistently throughout the long, arduous season.
When the season started, the result of the first game set us up for a real successful season. We managed
to chase 320 in a one-dayer against Campbelltown (previous season‟s premiers) at their home ground
at Raby. From that moment we knew we were onto something special. Over the next month, we had
some mixed results – consisting of a wash out against North Sydney (where we had complete control
in the game), a great win against Gordon defending 270 in a one dayer, and two losses against Sydney
Uni (minor premiers) and Easts.
From there we gathered ourselves and really got our season on a role. The core of the team really
settled and we then became undefeated until the Australia Day weekend. We were in a reasonable
position on the table (6th/7th) however we reached that weekend and due to injury and unavailability
we fielded a lesser experienced side and suffered a loss which put us a little bit behind the 8-ball.
With four games left, we practically needed to win all four games to make the finals. We disposed of
Sydney quite convincingly but we knew the crunch game was Manly the following week. They were
sitting 5th and us 7th and we knew if we were any chance of making it, we would have to put in a great
performance. And that we did. In a rain affected one dayer, we hung on and defended a small total of
167 and bowled their side out for 149. It was the win of the season, the guts and determination the
boys showed that day in difficult conditions was outstanding and credit must be paid to their mental
toughness.
Two games left and we had to face „wooden spooners‟ Mosman in round 14 whom we pretty much
handed them a cricket lesson and the crunch game against St. George in the final round where we had
to win to secure our spot for the finals. We were sitting on 6th coming into that final round and it was
so congested we could have finished anywhere as high as 4th and as low as 7th. Unfortunately, we were
outplayed by St. George that day and we finished in 7th. The trials and tribulations of sport got the
better of us on the day. We as a team felt very disappointed due to the fact that we busted our guts
during that 6 month campaign and it had to come down to the last Saturday. Six months of hard work
down to one day. However that did not dampen our spirits. Overall the season was highly successful
with 9 wins, 2 washouts and 4 losses. Looking at those results surely you would think that would be
enough to make the finals but it wasn‟t and that‟s an indication of the quality of competition and how
every week is a tough game. One of the standouts was indeed our away form. We only lost one away
game this whole season. Remarkable.
The boys did a fantastic job this season and I personally would like to thank them and commend them
on a job well done and hopefully we can go one further next season.

A special mention to Ian Paterson for doing an outstanding job scoring and all round assisting the
team this year. It was greatly appreciated.

Toby Hynes
Grade Captain
Keegan Luiters
Keegan played an integral role in the team this season. He brought a professional attitude to the team
which has been lacking the last couple of seasons. He provided a high standard of achievement and
that reflected on the younger guys. He was a great help in the field and was invaluable when
discussing tactical options when executing particular plans. He also offered a calming influence over
the team, not to panic in pressure situations and when we were controlling the game he allowed us not
to get ahead of ourselves.
Matt Baden
Matt provided an extra element to the team this season. His enthusiasm and effort he put in for his
team mates was second to none. Matt loved playing Third Grade and he appreciated every experience
he got with the boys. His outgoing personality brought a lot of life to the team but his respect for the
black and white lead him to having a successful season.
James Winder
The most technically sound batsman in the team. Being only 17, and his first season in grade, he
showed a level of maturity far and beyond his age group. His relaxed but focused attitude did him
great credit this season. He was always outstanding in the field and opened up most our innings
setting up a great platform for the middle order. He is a very talented cricketer and I‟m sure before
long he will be achieving higher accolades.

3rd Grade Player Profiles 2008/09
Vinayak Sasitharan
The rock of the middle order. Vinnie really proved to the players this season that he has a great
understanding of his own game and that came to fruition this season. He had an impenetrable defence,
and an ability to concentrate for very long periods of time in mostly tough conditions and situations.
He also had a great cricket brain and tactically he was able to offer many logical thoughts and plans to
aid the team in the field.
John Di Bartolo
Johnny‟s addition to the team a third of the way through the season was of vital importance. His
ability to score quickly at any time or situation, his unorthodox style of leg spin bowling, his fabulous
catching ability and wealth of experience provided our team with so many more options. Further, his
enthusiastic attitude and good nature made him a highly valued member of our side this year.
David Paterson
This was Pato‟s second season in 3s this year and right from the start, the team knew he had taken on
what he had learnt from last year and applied it to this year. David is a very pleasant young man who
has got a great future ahead of him. As the season progressed the team could see that he was adding
more and more strings to his „batting‟ bow and when given the opportunity he grasped it with two
hands making 98 on his Second Grade debut.
John Rush
Now an experienced campaigner, John took on a leadership role within the team being vice-captain.
He and I are very close friends and have played a lot of matches together so working with John this
year has been a pleasurable experience. John‟s professionalism, charisma and work ethic gave a solid
keeper behind the stumps. His glove work throughout the season was outstanding every week and
gave the bowlers the confidence they needed to get those „nicks‟. He provided us with the security we
needed and his batting is developing all the time with his technique and mental preparation coming
along nicely.
Will Sackville
One part of our spinning duo this year, Will was the more senior of the pairing and allowed to tie up
one end by bowling 20 plus overs usually, going for less than three an over and taking wickets on a
regular basis. His never-say-die attitude and determination in the field always lifted the boys when
under pressure. Just an all round great bloke whose personality was greatly appreciated every
Saturday afternoon.
Vishnu Sarpeskar
Vishy was the other half of spinning duo this year. A leg spinner with a wealth of talent and a positive
learning attitude. His main skill was to spin the ball a long way. And that he did, week in week out.
He took plenty of vital wickets during the season, breaking partnerships and delivering a „wrong-un‟
which was basically unpickable. His was a solid lower order bat who is improving all the time.
44
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
3rd Grade Player Profiles 2008/09
Luke Miner
Luke‟s transition into the higher grades this year has been a success. His was a valuable part of our
pace attack coming on first change, bowling stump to stump and bowling with outstanding control.
His ability to force batsman into loose shots by constantly bowling dots balls allowed the leadership
group to set attacking fields and apply as much pressure as we could. Luke is a very respectful young
man who always puts his team mates first and who has a promising future with the club.
Tom O’Neil
Tom has been a real bolter this season. He has been the surprise packet fast bowler of the club. We
used him as a real spear head in 3‟s this season. He had a great ability to adapt to a vast array of
conditions presented to us during the year. He was able to swing the ball both ways, cut the ball off the
pitch but more importantly he was able to expose weaknesses of batsmen and hinder their strengths.
His mental application was outstanding, always trying as hard as he could for his team mates. His
persona and character was also widely appreciated amongst the boys having the ability to give the
team to provide any statistics about any sport, no matter how trivial. He was widely considered
amongst the team to have a plethora of sporting knowledge.
Michael Tudehope
Being our most experienced fast bowler, Michael took on a leadership role amongst our attack this
season. He was our main spearhead. He was always able to take wickets at regular intervals and had a
real knack of being able to knock off the opposition‟s tail very quickly by instilling the fear factor into
them. Further, he was widely considered to be the larrikin of the team. His humour and quick wit kept
us all a focused but happy bunch. Always when we were perhaps under a bit of pressure Tudes
dropped in a little harmless joke into the fray and allowed us keep our emotions in tact and not forget
the fun side of cricket.
Editorial Comment
In compiling the report Toby did not mention his own excellent season. Toby was the side‟s second
leading run scorer with 363 runs for the season at an average of 36.30. His tally included two scores in
excess of fifty with a top score of 82 not out against University of NSW. Toby also took 6 wickets at
15.17 with a best of 3 for 49. During the season Toby surpassed 100 games for the Club, 2000 runs for
the Club and 1000 runs in Third Grade. Congratulations on another very successful season and look
forward to seeing you back in 09/10.

4th Grade Season Report 2008/09
Fourth Grade was made up of a varying group of individuals. These consisted of guys playing grade
for over a decade and been around the block a few times to some guys that have played a fair bit of
grade and about to make their first run around the block right down to second season and grade
debutants. The latter two dominated the numbers in the side especially towards the end of the season.
This season started out with a bang. Some big scores were posted along with some top rate bowling
performances all delivered in the early rounds pushing the side up to second place at one stage.
Performance of players and some unavailabilities due to injury and higher honours saw changes to the
side. Unfortunately we were not able to maintain the momentum that the season started with and
trailed off to a disappointing 9th.
Throughout the year the side got on very well as a unit or friendship level. One of the big things is to
learn to play as team. Cricket is a team sport and whilst an individual‟s performance can influence the
outcome of a game it is ultimately the team that win the game. Learn to revel in and enjoy a victory
even if you don‟t perform as an individual and to enjoy the success of others.
Highlights of the season:
Green Shield fire up against Petersham in ridiculous heat wave
Nathan Brown 176 no
Kabilan scored 55 and had a big partnership with Nathan.
Lachlan O‟Connor took the bowling honors with 4/96
Unseen before displays of big hitting
John DiBartolo smashing 87 vs Gordon and 105 against ND‟s in the cleanest display of hitting
ever seen
Seamers finest hour
Tom O‟Neil 6/21 vs. Nth Sydney
Gavin Dennett 5/42 vs. East‟s making up for the 4/79 the previous week
Llew Gartrell and Gav taking 7 wickets in less than 18 balls vs. Blacktown
Geoff Ashmore tearing through UNI NSW in a fine display of heat on debut in 4‟s
A special mention to Lore Brown for your all your help with afternoon tea throughout the year.

This season, 28 players represented 4s, and all with distinction. Space does not allow me to
mention all of them here, but I am sure their seasons are reflected upon elsewhere. However, their
contributions and efforts were an important cog in the machine, without which 4s would have
been significantly lacking. Special mention is made below of those 10 players who formed the
core of 4th Grade representatives through-out the season:
Kabilan Bascaran
This was Kab‟s first year with the club and I think a real learning experience. Kab was our keeper this
year and was also known to lend a hand with the bat. Kab improved throughout the year as a keeper,
taking some absolute screamers, and took a large number of dismissals in 4th Grade. I think over 30
dismissals for the year. Kab also learned what it means to be a grade keeper from taking hits for the
team on the low decks to being the voice of the side when things got tough.
Nathan Brown
Nathan is a young man who is a very gifted cricketer and sportsman. From what I am told he also
plays league at a very high level as well. Nathan played the best knock that I have ever seen by a
youngster in his unbeaten score of 173. His figures didn‟t do his ability justice this year and that was
through no lack of effort. I think it is just a matter of Nathan deciding which sport he wants to give the
biggest go – and don‟t be too hard on yourself.
Kevin Tyler
This was Kevin‟s first year with West‟s after coming over from ND‟s previously. Kevin has the ability
to be a real asset as a bowling all-rounder at this level. Kevin would probably agree with me that he
didn‟t bat to his ability this year and has already vowed to pay more attention to this aspect. KT
surprisingly also has the ability to bowl fairly long spells. He is a real team player and plays a big part
in the team and also helps the younger players adapt to this level of cricket.
Llewellyn Gartrell
There is no doubt about it, Llew is mister 110 percent. Always gives his all at training and on the big
day. Looking at the Stats could almost be considered as an all-rounder with little cameos at the end of
the innings. Keep up with hard work and keep it simple and be patient.
Gavin Dennett
Mr Reliable .You can always depend in Gav to give everything he has got. He is capable of bowling
long tight spells in most conditions and is a great strike and partnership bowler. He is a team player
and definitely a bloke a skipper can turn to in all aspects of the game. At under 2.5 runs per over and
an average of 16 I‟d say you‟d have to be pretty happy with that.
Harpreet Singh
Harpreet was probably unlucky to not spend more time in 4ths. He definitely showed that he was up
to the challenge in this grade. He is one of our young flock of bowlers and has got some physical
development to come which will add to his pace next year. Due to age forcing over limitations it can
often be difficult to bring a young bowler to their full potential. With more overs in the game situation,
due to restrictions lessening, will see Harpreet develop the skills to be a fine young bowler.

James Winder
James is a very talented and classy young player. He has great potential and has a good future in the
game. He has a plethora of shots and a fine head on his shoulders for one of his age. JW didn‟t get the
big one this year but showed signs that of what he is capable of. Has a good pair of hands and took
some great catches at 2nd slip. Stay patient, give yourself some time and look forward to seeing you
next year mate.
Suthangan Thanabalasingam
Sutha is a very athletic young man who loves his cricket. He is probably primarily known for his
chinaman but should not go unnoticed with is batting. A midyear injury saw a stop to the chinaman
and Sutha‟s selection was on his batting. Has a fantastic sweep shot that is very frustrating for the
opposition. Very quick between the wickets and is like an energizer bunny on speed in the field. Keep
working hard bud.
Geoffrey Ashmore
Looking at Geoff with his slight of build frame you wouldn‟t have thought you‟d have too much
trouble keeping him out. Tell that to UNI NSW. I have never seen an opposition consistently beaten by
pace. He was too quick for their batsmen. Geoff really grew as a bowler this year. He had some great
opportunities and seized all of these with both hands and feet. Including performances in grades on
both side of 4‟s Geoff put together some fantastic figures for an under aged bowler. Well done mate.
John DiBartolo
John decided to leave Fairfield and don the colours of the Magpie. John is a great team man and loves
getting out there in the middle and giving it everything. He has a great pair of hands and took some
mind boggling screamers leaving oppositions gob smacked. Then he would go out there with the bat
and destroy the bowlers no matter where they put the ball. Glad to have you wear the Black and White
mate.
Editorial Comment
In compiling the report Aaron did not mention his own excellent season. Aaron was the side‟s leading
run scorer with 565 runs for the season at an average of 40.36. His tally included three hundreds with a
top score of 134 against Sydney University. Aaron is an aggressive top order batsman who always
takes the attack up to the opposition; this invariably gets the side off to a flying start. During the
season Aaron passed 4000 runs for the Club (4273) and 1000 runs in Fourth Grade (1030)
Congratulations on another very successful season and look forward to seeing you back in 09/10.

Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
5th Grade Season Report 2008/09
The “Baby Magpies” as we often called ourselves were, as the name suggests, a very young side. But
what we did bring was a strong competitive nature and a lot of raw talent. I think it is fair to say that
based on talent alone we should have expected to play finals cricket. However what we did lack was
the experience to get us through the pivotal moments in a match.
In general I think the bowling unit as whole needs a big congratulations. They performed
outstandingly during the season. It was the bowlers that kept us competitive in a lot of the games
during the season. They all responded well to plans and bowled to their field. And we had great
variety with a mix of spin, pace, left and right arm bowling to choose from at any time.
In the field our youth really shined. I would like to think that we were one of the better fielding teams
in the competition. The boys showed a great deal of commitment, putting their body on the line and
diving around. The effort could never be faulted. However that does not mean we can be complacent.
We need to continue to improve ourselves and our execution. After all, fielding is one thing you are
guaranteed to do every single game.
In terms of batting, we must be honest with ourselves and accept that this was the part of our game
that let us down. I believe the key to winning games, especially in 5th grade, is to consistently be able to
score 250 runs. If you are able to do that, you will win more games than you lose, and you will most
likely play finals cricket. On most occasions this was very difficult for us as a side. But I don‟t believe
this was due to a lack of ability. Instead it was a lack of mental toughness, grit and determination
which in fairness I believe comes with experience. However, I would like us not to use our youth as an
excuse in the coming season. We should in fact turn it into a positive and push ourselves to perform
better with the bat to back up our efforts in the field. I think application and putting a high price on
our own wicket is the key. I know that batting was the common denominator throughout the grades
that held our sides up from a finals berth.
Overall I think we need to be honest with ourselves and admit that the final result was somewhat
disappointing, finishing 16th. We never won any of our really close games. The boys will remember the
Easts and Randy-Pete‟s (runners-up) games as rounds we should have come away with points from.
Another thing we need to realize is that we beat a few of the top 6 sides (namely Gordon and Sydney
Uni). This proves that we are good enough to play finals cricket and that should be our goal for the
coming season. We have used youth and inexperience as an excuse for long enough. Next season I
would like to see us become a tougher unit, one that loves a scrap and a fight. We need to win those
close games. Put simply I want to see 5th grade playing finals cricket.
It has been a pleasure captaining the boys this season. I have decided that next season someone else
should take the reigns and bring their ideas to the table. Perhaps a change in thinking and leadership is
exactly what the boys need. I wish all of you the best of luck in the coming season.

5th Grade Player Profiles 2008/09
Below I have written a few comments on the boys who played five or more games in Fifth Grade
Suffan Hassan – was the most prolific batsman in 5th grade. Still very young, he showed great
maturity throughout the season. He was the only person to score a century (128). With continuing
improvement and better understanding of his own game there is no reason why he should not expect
to be successful in the higher grades
Sachinpal Singh – was a pivotal player who contributed both with the bat and ball. Had a highest
score of 81 runs. His batting technique is sound but needs to put a higher price on his wicket. With
better concentration will come the big scores he desires. His bowling is useful and will always be a
handy option on slower wickets. Continuing hard work will see him reach his goals
Lachlan O’Connor – another one of our very young players proved to be a revelation with the ball
bowling leg-spin. Beginning as a batsman his bowling soon took over, finishing the season with 21
wickets at an average of 18.05. This included two 5-wicket hauls. His batting shows promise and will
develop with time, but he is another who needs to put a higher price on his wicket. Overall Lachlan
has a bright future to look forward to and should progress well next season with some hard work.
Chris Mortimer – hard working member of the side who would admit that he performed below his
best throughout the season. Started the season with a bang with a solid 56 against the eventual
champions (Campbelltown) but wasn‟t able to reproduce this through the season. As he develops a
better understanding of his own game he will be able to find the things that work best for him and
success will soon follow
Ben French – one of the only batsmen who put a high price on his wicket. He did a good job for us
opening the batting and fighting hard against the new ball. With more confidence we will see Ben
come out of his shell more, but the foundations are there.
Faran Lamb – a strong competitor with both the ball and the bat. Primarily a bowler he was quick and
difficult to get away. With some hard work he will be able to maximize his wicket taking ability. His
contributions in the lower order were also valuable as his often took the attack to our opposition. Also
a brilliant fielder
Suthangan Thanabalasingam – riddled by injury throughout the season his bowling soon took a back
seat to his batting. There is definite potential but greater application is needed to produce consistent
scores. His bowling shows great promise. Another brilliant fielder
Joel Willis – one of the more experienced members who took it upon himself to help out a lot of the
younger bowlers. He was a great asset to the side. At full flight there is no quicker bowler in the 5 th
grade competition. His batting also shows promise, but needs to put a higher price on his wicket
David Brock – started the season late but showed good signs with the bat and behind the stumps.
With continuing work and training he is another that will progress quickly up the grades
54
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
5th Grade Player Profiles 2008/09
Divyesh Nambiar – another one of our batsmen who showed signs of bigger things to come. Needs to
continue to work on his technique, but with this will come success.
Adam Esposito – an all-rounder who showed a lot of promise with the ball. He had limited
opportunities to prove himself with the bat but showed some glimpses of class. With continuing hard
work and improvement to all facets of his game, he will reach his full potential
Mitch Finlay – another one of the “older” members of the side who was consistent with the ball week
in week out. He finished the season with 15 wickets at an average of 17.47 which included one 5wicket haul. Was an impressive season overall.
Harpreet Singh – a bowler who was found in the difficult situation of jumping between 4th and 5th
grade. Is a strong young fast bowler who shows a lot of potential. Continuing hard work is needed for
him to get the most out of his potential and move up the grades
Geoff Ashmore – started in 5th grade but moved to 4th grade after some impressive performances. His
success was largely limited by the fact that the opposition batsmen were generally not good enough to
edge the balls he was bowling. Has a big future ahead of him. Needs to continue to work on his batting
as he has the potential to be a handy lower order batsman too
Chamath Samarasinghe – has a late start to the season due to injury. Is an exciting prospect with the
ball. He finished the season with 9 wickets at an average of 13.33 which included one 5-wicket haul.
Another who is likely to progress quickly up the grades next season. He is another bowler who shows
a lot of promise with the bat as a handy lower order contributor.
Editorial Comment
Nirmalan Thanabalasingam – provided enthusiastic leadership throughout the entire season and was
a constant encourager of his team. Always competed hard but also shows he understands the true
“spirit” of the game. Banger put together a number of moderate scores, often with good style, but
didn‟t manage to go on and make the big scores that he sets himself for. He has natural ability and is
keen to succeed as a Grade batsman. The Club is thankful for the diligent efforts made by Banger
Captaining 5th‟s over the last two seasons.

6th Grade Season Report 2008/09
The 2008/09 saw the Club field a side in the Metropolitan Cup (Sixth Grade) for the first time.
Little did we realise at the time what the season would produce. I would like to thank the
Committee and all involved for making such a decision.
What it achieved for so many involved with the side was to introduce them to the rigours of grade
cricket as well as giving them the opportunity to play on turf wickets as well as being an integral
part of the operations of a grade club and all the benefits associated with training with the higher
grade players.
I am sure all those that regularly played will have this as one of their highlights.
One of the disadvantages of being the last side within the structure is the constant change of
players and the difficulty in moulding a cohesive team unit together. All in all we had 36 players
pass through the ranks of the Sixth Grade side this season.
This makes the achievement of finishing runners-up in the competition even more remarkable and
to lose the final by only one run even more heart-breaking. The efforts put in by all the players
throughout the season and especially during the final series deserved a premiership.
The competition consisted of 15 rounds which included a bye. In the remaining 14 games we lost
only 3 games which were early on as we tried to establish ourselves and find out who could do
what.
During the season our home ground was changed from Punchbowl Oval to Blick Oval which in
itself provided its own experiences but we remained undefeated at Blick Oval and turned it into a
fortress.
The side was basically unbeatable after Christmas with our only loss being the grand final by one
run in an unusual game to say the very least.
Highlights of the season:
Jai Shankar‟s 151 not out run demolition of Sydney University in the Semi Final
Will Croker‟s 129 against Randwick-Petersham Green
Damien Mortimer‟s double against South Sydney – 106 with the bat and 5 for 39 with the
ball
The draw against South Sydney to be 4 for 290 chasing 319 – what a great effort.
The highlights go beyond the individual performances, it is the development of the players and
the way a group of young players mould together and dig in and fight in the trenches together
when things get tough that are truly the highlights.

Grade Season Report and Player Profiles 2008/09
Appreciation:
It would be remiss of me not to thank the following for their efforts during the season:Brian Ashmore for organising all my replacement players especially those at such late
notice
The WSDCC Committee for their continued support and encouragement throughout the
season
The WSDCC Committee for allowing us to play on the Club‟s premier ground Pratten Park
for our finals – it was a great thrill
All the parents that helped with the afternoon teas etc
All the players that turned up to support us at various times during the finals
Steve McClue for scoring in our finals matches
Mark Russell for running the canteen and looking after us during the finals and his speech
prior to the final – sorry we could not win it for you
Lastly but no means least to all the players who played Sixth Grade during the season – thank you
for you commitment, dedication and efforts and hopefully we will go one better next season.
Mathew Baldwin
6th Grade Captain
Players
Jai Shankar
Jai was the player of the finals which only capped off an exceptional season. His performances had
to be seen to be believed. His 151 not out against Sydney University was one of the most dominate
displays of the season. Actually Jai‟s score exceeded the total of the students. To back this up Jai
scored 51 in the grand final against Randwick-Petersham. Jai scored 425 runs for the season at an
average of 53.13. Congratulations on an excellent season and exceptional form in the finals. We
look forward to his continued development and progress up the grades next season.
Lee Maggs
Lee was an integral part of our side and had an excellent season with both bat and ball. Lee has
the potential to develop into a fine all-round cricketer if the statistics and form from this season
are anything to go by. Lee scored 313 runs at an average of 52.17 with a top score of 86 not out
against Penrith as well as another score in excess of fifty, also against Penrith. Lee was also the
side‟s leading wicket taker with 23 wickets at the incredible average of 11.35 with a best of 4 for 32.
Congratulations on an excellent season and with hard work and dedication you will progress up
the grades.

6th Grade Player Profiles 2008/09
Scott Cassidy
Scott contributed greatly to the success of the side. His keeping was excellent taking 18 dismissals
during his nine games including four stumpings. Scott also was more than handy with the bat
scoring 207 runs at 25.88 with a top score of 60 against Sydney University. Continued hard work
will see Scott develop further.
Ben French
Ben is an opening batsman that showed us at varying times during the season he could be an
opener in higher grades. His 68 against South Sydney was an example of this. During that innings
he shared a 173 run opening partnership with Damien Mortimer which will likely stay around as
a record for a long time. Continued hard work will see you succeed – it is now up to you.
Nick White
Nick is another high order batsman that showed us he has the talent to play higher grades in the
near future. He is a determined player who places a high price on his wicket. Nick scored 166 runs
at an average of 23.71 with a top score of 61 against Blacktown. His effort at the end of the first
day of the final typified his spirit and determination.
Conor Clark
Conor was the side‟s second leading wicket taker with 21 wickets at an average of 18.48 with a
best of 3 for 15. Consistency of performance is Conor‟s strength and he could always be relied
upon in those tight situations. Continued dedication and training will reap those rewards you
seek in your cricket. Congratulations on your season.
Divyesh Nambiar
Divyesh played the six games in Sixth Grade but I do not think we saw the best out of him. He
showed us glimpses of what to expect in the years ahead highlighted by a top score of 36. Divyesh
needs to build on his talent through hard dedicated training that will only enhance his skill base.
Keep working and you will succeed.
Simon Nosworthy
Simon is a real team man – he would give anything for his team and has a great heart. Often
bowled long spells due to the restrictions with the other bowlers but his efforts were more often
than not rewarded. His finished the season with 16 wickets at the healthy average of 23.44 with a
best of 4 for 29. Simon is a dedicated hard trainer who efforts in the nets will be rewarded in the
not too distant future. Thank you for your support and effort during the season.
Sanjay Parasher
Sanjay was one of our Green Shield recruits who came into the side during the season. Sanjay is a
young fast bowler who progressed well as the season unfolded. In the end Sanjay played nine
games in Sixth Grade taking 17 wickets at a very useful average of 14.65. Sanjay showed he has
what it takes to progress through the grades and he realises this can be achieved through
dedication to training.

Keiran Sobels
Keiran played seven games during the season and again I do not think we saw the best from him.
Keiran was a pleasure to have in the side and he is a determined cricketer but unfortunately this
did not translate into runs on the park. However, a top score of 31 did show us he has the ability
to succeed – he now needs the dedication and a little luck to come his way. Thank you for all your
efforts this year. I‟m sure you will succeed next season.
Brenton Wright
Brenton was another of our Green Shield players who came into the side during the season.
Brenton ended up playing seven games and showed us he is player of the future. He is a very
accomplished left arm spinner who took 14 wickets at 22.07 with a best of 4 for 33. Once Brenton
grows in height he will be an effective middle order batsman – a top score of 39 showed us all he
has the ability to progress through the grades as an all-rounder. Long time supporters of the Club
who saw Brenton play for the first time in the finals were making comparisons to a former Green
Shield player at the same age – hint MJC.
Editorial Comment
In compiling this report Mathew failed to mention his own performances during the season. At
the beginning of the season Mathew was approached to be captain to the side. This was going to
be a huge learning experience for anyone appointed to the role. In fairness to Mathew he
approached the role with gusto and it was this enthusiasm that translated itself into the
performances of the side. Mathew did an exceptional job in captaining the side and getting them
to the finals in the first year. Mathew also contributed with the bat with 235 runs with a top score
of 76 against Penrith. Congratulations on a job well done.

AW Green Shield Report 2008/09
This year‟s Green Shield squad was very young, with only had five players that were U/16, the
rest of the players were U/15s and only had one player had played at Green Shield level before.
The coaching staff picked a very enthusiastic side that could do the job and do Western Suburbs
proud. Most were in the emerging magpies last season so they knew what playing Green Shield
for Western Suburbs meant to them. I as captain couldn‟t have been prouder of the boys, they
truly represented Western Suburbs in a proud manner and the coaching staff of Neil, Toby, and
Jeff couldn‟t have been prouder of the boys. We just missed out on making the quarter finals
coming seventh with some very unlucky losses. All the boys got along together and where a very
good bunch of mates. Everyone did there job for the team and put 110% and as captain that‟s all I
could ask for.
Round 1 was against Bankstown at Grahame Thomas Oval. West‟s won the toss and elected to bat
on a good batting pitch. The boys had a collapse at the top of the order as they were very nervous
batting in their first Green Shield game. The side was 3-18 but a very good under pressure innings
by Dom Chalker with 59 gave the boys a good total at the end. Luke Ryan with 40 and Brad
Whitfield 21 hitting the balls to all parts of the ground gave the team a total that we could defend.
We were all out for 183.
After the quick change around Brad Whitfield and Luke Ryan opened the bowling and an
aggressive Brad Whitfield got in to the batsmen and took the first three wickets. After the run out
for the fourth wicket the boys where full of confidence and getting in to the batsmen. After the
opening bowlers bowled good tight bowling, the second change of Tom Rogers and the spinners
Lachlan O‟Connor and Brenton Wright were very unlucky not to pick a couple more wickets. The
boys started to drop off but good bowling from Luke Ryan‟s second spell for an important wicket
put West‟s back on top. We brought back the spinner‟s Lachlan O‟Connor and Nathan Brown for
the last couple of overs the number 9 and 10 for Bankstown were struggling but needed 1 run of
the last over. All the boys were nervous, it came down to the last ball they still needed 1 run and
Bankstown where lucky to win
Round 2 was against Randwick Petersham at Coogee Oval. They won the toss and elected to bowl
first on a green wicket. The boys at the top of the order fell in a hurry and when the unlucky Dom
Chalker got caught down leg side the boys were 3-30, but a good partnership from Nathan Brown
38 and Tom Rogers 32 who was unlucky to get out to a good catch helped bring respectability to
the score. The lower order fell quickly and we were all out on 128 on an oval with slow outfield
and a green top pitch.
Very good bowling from Brad Whitfield once again, had figures of 3 runs from 5 overs and the
opening bowlers had done their job. The first wicket came from Lachlan O‟Connor with a very
good spell of bowling and some good fast bowling from Sanjay Parasher got the second wicket.
Good fielding from the boys got a run out. As the rain fell at Coogee the total got reduced to 118
the boys after the rain break were fired up and putting a lot of pressure on the Randwick boys to
get runs but unfortunately the rain help Randwick as the total got smaller the West‟s boys were
unlucky to lose again.

Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
AW Green Shield Report 2008/09
Round 3 was at Glen McGrath oval against Sutherland. After the Christmas New Year break the
boys wanted to get back on the field playing. West‟s loss the toss and bowled first on a good
batting wicket, the opening bowlers didn‟t get off to a very good start but tight bowling from Lee
Maggs got a couple of wickets . After the lunch break the boys freshened up and were ready to
keep Sutherland fewer than 250 on a good batting pitch. Nathan Brown got the next couple of
wickets and with Lee Maggs did a fantastic job bowling in partnership. Lee Maggs was the pick of
the bowlers with figures of 2-32 of 12 overs. Good fielding from the boys led to a run out.
Sutherland was kept to 252 which the boys where pleased to chase after the start we had.
With a change in the top of the order Lachlan O‟Connor and Kyle Jefferys opened the batting with
Lachlan O‟Connor unlucky to fall on 8 with Kyle Jeffery‟s look good for 19 but then fell to a very
unlucky run out. A steady partnership came from Nathan and Dom (10) after Dom got dismissed
Wests were 3-97. Just before tea a good partnership from Nathan and Suffan got the team in front.
After tea the partnership continued but unfortunately Suffan Hassan got bowled by a good ball
the side was 4-168. In came Brad Whitfield who scored a well made 27 of 20 balls and Wests
started to get on top but unfortunately after that the team lost 2 quick wickets with Nathan Brown
run out on 96 it was a challenging job for the lower order and unfortunately the boys lost but it
was a very good effort.
Round 4 was against Sydney at Ryde Oval. Sydney won the toss and elected to bat on a slow
wicket. A good tactic from Coach D‟costa opened the bowling with a spinner that led to quick
wickets and Sydney was soon 3-15. Tight bowling from Sanjay and Brenton followed by great
back up from Lee Maggs who was once again tight and picked up a wicket. Lachlan O‟Connor
and Lee put on a good bowling partnership. This was followed Josh Millar who kept it tight as
well. It was a spinner‟s wicket and Lachlan and Nathan went through the lower order as Lachlan
was the pick of the bowlers with 4-28 and boys rolled Sydney for 109 aided by a very good
performance by all the boys in the field.
Another tactic from Coach D‟costa changed the batting order with Brad Whitfield batting a three.
He was unlucky to get run out the side was soon 4-15 as the top order collapsed. Good batting
from Lachlan Ford and Nathan Brown (57no) saw a good partnership of 65 after Lachlan was very
unlucky to fall after a good innings. The boys got home for their first win of the season with the
score ending up on 7-110.
Round 5 After the boys got their first win of the tournament they were full of confidence heading
to Hawkesbury for a long drive to Own Earle Oval. Western Suburbs lost the toss and were
bowling on a very good fast batting pitch. A good start with the ball from Brad picking up the first
wicket and Sanjay and Dom destroyed the top order as the Hawks where 3-83.The spinners were
brought in to the attack and slowed Hawkesbury down with Lachlan picking up 2 wickets and
Nathan 1. West‟s were on top and looking to chase a score under 200 on a very good batting pitch
and fast outfield. With the score at 6-132 and very good tight bowling
66
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
AW Green Shield Report & Player Profiles 2008/09
once again from Lee Maggs gave Hawkesbury nothing and after by some good fielding from the
boys the total to chase was 180.
After a slow start from the boys and a couple of wickets down after tea the boys got on with it and
a great partnership from Dom Chalker and Suffan Hassan 64 really put us in a position to go on
with it and win the game. A good finish with Dom (59 no) Lachlan Ford (10 no) guided us to
victory.
Round 6 was against Campbelltown at Raby 2 the boys had confidence having back to back
victories. Western Suburbs lost the toss and where bowling first on a good batting wicket with the
outfield lightening fast. The boys got stuck in and did the job with early wickets to Alex
Bloomfield and Lee Maggs with tight bowling got Wests off to a good start. Then some super
bowling in the middle stages by Brenton Wright with figures of 3-20, restricted Campbelltown to
8-154. The bowling and fielding from the boys was excellent.
Chasing 154 we knew that we had to take our time and bat patiently after Kyle was retired hurt
Nathan came in and put on a good partnership with Kabilan (20). After Kablian was dismissed
Suffan Hassan (54 no) come in next and put on a good winning partnership with Nathan Brown
(63 no) to lead the team to victory.
Round 7 the final round was against Penrith at Punchbowl Oval. Western Suburbs loss the toss
and bowled on a good Punchbowl wicket. Brad Whitfield hurt himself in the warm up which saw
Jordan Millar come in from the rookie squad to play his first game. We couldn‟t have asked for
more from Jordan has he picked up 2 wickets in a good bowling partnership with Lee Maggs to
have the strong Penrith batting team 3-44. Good spin bowling by Lachlan O‟Connor and pace
from Dom Chalker, Jordan Millar and Lee Maggs at the end saw them restricted to 9-199 from the
60 overs.
Chasing 200 at Punchbowl wasn‟t easy but the boys toughed it out with a good start from Kabilan
and patient batting from Lachlan O‟Connor got us of to a good start but losing 3 quick wickets for
8 runs in the top order, the middle order had to do the job. A good partnership from Nathan
Brown and Lachlan Ford (22) steadied the ship. With the fall of Lachlan‟s wicket Lee Maggs (32
no) came in and lead the team to victory with Nathan (96 no).
Players
Kabilan Bascaran
Kabilan was our wicket keeper who finished the carnival with an outstanding 11 dismissals and
was particularly effective keeping to the spinners. He also batted at the top of the order for the last
three games and helped to get us off to a good start in our run chases.
Alexander Bloomfield
Alex was 1 of our fast bowlers who developed well throughout the carnival. He bowled some
outstanding wicket taking balls.
67
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
AW Green Shield Player Profiles 2008/09
Dominic Chalker
Dominic was vice captain of the side and put in some strong all round performances. He is an
outstanding fielder, strong fast bowler and talented top order batsman. His performances were
highlighted by his 59no in the 5th round against Hawkesbury when he batted the major part of the
innings with a twisted ankle to lead the team to victory.
Lachlan Ford
Lachlan was one of younger players who improved as the carnival progressed. His 30 in round 4
was a major contribution to our first win and will be a stepping stone to his future development.
Mark Haider
Mark unfortunately broke down in our final trial and was unable to take any part in the carnival.
He was to be our opening bowler and was a major loss. We wish him a speedy recovery and look
forward to seeing him back on the pitch.
Suffan Hassan
Saffan was the leading run scorer in our U/15 group. He scored 214 runs at 35.66 and no doubt
learnt a lot from the carnival.
Kyle Jefferys
Kyle was one of our young leaders who by his standard had an average carnival. He would have
learnt a lot and will be a better player because of the experience.
Lee Maggs
Lee was brought into the side when we lost three players to injury and state commitment. He is a
great example of taking full use of your opportunities. He came in for our second game and
stayed in the side for the rest of our games. Lee bowled beautifully to finish with 9 wickets at 15.44
and topped off his carnival with a brilliant 32 off 40 balls to help lead us to victory in our final
game.
Joshua Miller
Joshua another of our younger players bowled well from his limited opportunities and will
continue to improve from the experience.
Lachlan O’Connor
Lachlan showed his grade experience by being our leading wicket taker with 11 at 16.81 to be one
of the best spinners in the carnival. He showed his ability with the bat in our final game when he
opened the batting and made a good 31. With work he should be one of our leading players in the
future.

Sanjay Parasher
Sanjay one of our young fast bowlers put in some good spells during the carnival. He now knows
what is required to succeed at this level and with a lot of hard work has the ability to succeed next
year.
Luke Ryan
Luke was one of our two ACT players. He was only able to play in our first two games but in
those two outings he was able to show his outstanding cricket ability with both bat and ball but it
was his sportsmanship on and off the field the really stood out will make him an asset to Wests in
the future.
Franco Rocca
Franco was one of our reserve keepers and the experience will help him in the future.
Tom Rogers
Tom the second of our ACT players only played in the first two games but showed all round
ability which will see him develop into a fine player in the years to come. We look forward to
seeing him again next year.
Patrick Tat
Patrick came into the squad late but would have learnt a lot from the experience. He is an up and
coming left hand bowler whom with hard work will develop into a good grade player.
Brad Whitfield
Brad is an aggressive all rounder who gives 100% at all times. He will learn a lot from this year
and with continued hard work will develop into a fine player.
Brenton Wright
Brenton showed all the qualities to become a good all round cricketer with some good lower order
batting displays and some fine spells of left hand orthodox bowling. His 12 overs 6 maidens 3/20
against Campbelltown-Camden showed his class.
Jordan Millar
Jordan one of our train-on players came into the team in our final game when Brad was injured in
the warm up. He performed admirably with the ball taking 2/32 off 9 overs with his left arm pace.
Guy Seymour
Guy is one of our up and coming young keepers played in our 5th game against Hawkesbury and
was tidy in the overs he kept.
A very good Green Shield season by the boys some outstanding performances with the ball by Lee
Maggs and Lachlan O‟Connor and some good batting by Nathan Brown, Dom Chalker and Suffan
Hassan.

Many thanks to
Neil D’costa (Coach) for his outstanding knowledge of the game and individual coaching
methods that help the boys play at their best. This showed particularly in the last 4 games which
we won.
Toby Hynes (Assistant Coach) for helping Neil out with the preparation. He was great and was a
good bloke to have around the team as he coached many of the boys for reps and his coaching for
the first to games was outstanding.
Steve McClue (Scorer) for his attendance and scoring at our games. It is great to have the First
Grade scorer in control of the books for the Green Shield
Jeff Warland (Manager) for his organisation for the team which was great help to the boy‟s
preparation and a great help to individual players as well. His knowledge of cricket made it a lot
easier for Neil and Toby as coaches.
Thank you to all the parents for running the boys to the games and special thanks to all who
helped with the lunches and afternoon teas.
Thank you, to Tom Rogers and Luke Ryan who made the effort to play the first two games before
fulfilling their commitments to the ACT State U/17s Team at the National titles. It was with great
pleasure to have them in the squad and to play alongside them.
It was a great honour to captain the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club A.W. Green Shield side
for the 2008-2009 season.

Poidevin Gray Report 2008/09
The 2008/09 season saw a marked drop in the level of performances from the senior players
within the Poidevin-Gray side. This was disappointing given the fact that last season we were
runner‟s up to St George.
Our strength of last season, being strong all-round performances and when in crunch situations
we had the ability to stand up and make it count, were just a distant memory.
The season started off well enough with a victory against Hawkesbury dismissing the home side
for only 127 but in the end we found that task a difficult one passing them seven down.
Nothing could have prepared us for the thumping we would take over the next four rounds as we
were uncompetitive in each fixture.
The sad indictment of the batting this season was the fact that on the four occasions we batted first
the most we could muster was 155. In fact our two wins came when chasing.
One only needs to look at the averages following this report to see why we struggled. We had
only one batsman that scored more than 150 runs and averaged greater than 16. Our bowling was
not much better with no bowler taking 10 wickets
Having said that it gave us a chance to blood some of our younger players and give them the
experience at this level. Certainly a few positives came out of this and we hope to see the benefits
of that next season.
Our second and final victory came against Randwick-Petersham in the penultimate round. After
dismissing Randwick for 158 our top order led by Paul Donovan, David Paterson and Vinayak
Sasitharan got us well on the way to victory. Paul top scored with 62, our only fifty in seven
matches – enough said. Eventually we achieve victory with four wickets in hand.
Finally I would like to thank all the parents, friends and fellow players who turned up each week
to support the team. Also I would like to thank Sue and Ben Gorham and Test Match for
providing the best lunches in Sydney for our players and always making sure we were well
hydrated and fed during our fixtures at Pratten Park. Finally but no means least I would like to
thank Steve McClue, our scorer for all his assistance during the season. Steve was an integral part
of the side and ensures all the little things are taken care of. Thanks Steve your efforts are always
highly appreciated.

Poidevin Gray Player Profiles 2008/09
Matthew Day
This was a season that Matthew would prefer to forget. Nothing went right for Matthew with
either bat or ball and not the best way to finish a PG career. With his new contract for Tasmania
for 2009/10 we wish him all the success.
Ross DiBartolo
Ross‟s off spinners were an integral part of the attack this season. All bowlers suffered this season
as they seldom had large totals to defend. Ross finished with 5 wickets for the series which was
the third highest
Shariful Islam
Not a happy series with the bat for Rifle with a top score of 37 against Campbelltown. Shariful
was also thrown the keeping gloves a couple of times during this season and acquitted himself
admirably. We look forward to another 9 years of PG‟s from Shariful!!!!
James Winder
James was one of the younger and less experienced players in the squad but showed more
determination and application than many of the more experienced players. An unbeaten 24
against Hawkesbury saw us achieve victory when things started to look dire. A top score of 48
against Penrith in round two followed and highlighted what was possible given application and
determination. We look forward to more PG seasons from James.
Emannuel Parmakellis
Manny has the ability to bowl a great line and can tie up batsmen with his accuracy and has a fine
slower delivery. Manny was the side‟s leading wicket taker with seven wickets with a best of 3 for
23 against Hawkesbury. Manny is becoming a better player year after year and next season should
bring him greater success.
Manjot Singh
Unfortunately for Jotty he could not bring his excellent First Grade form into the PG competition.
Actually an extremely disappointing season with the bat for Jotty as it seems he could not take a
trick. A couple of interesting decisions and great catches cutting a few innings short. However,
Jotty still contributed with the ball taking six wickets at 18.50 to have the lowest bowling average
of all the main bowlers.
David Paterson
David forced his way into the side after some excellent performances at the grade level but was
not able to reproduce that in PG‟s. I am sure David will only benefit from the experiences learnt
this season and will come back to play a significant role next season.
73
Western Suburbs District Cricket Club
Poidevin Gray Player Profiles 2008/09
Will Sackville
Will is another aggressive off spinner who loves the challenge. Will is never afraid to toss the ball
up and invite an opposing batsman to take him on. Will enjoyed limited success this season but
more often than not we were defending low totals which limit the effectiveness of our slow
bowlers.
Paul Donovan
Paul was the only batsman that could actually say they had a successful 2008/09 season. Paul‟s
form continued to improve and with the experience and maturity gained in Second Grade this
season saw it translated into the PG competition. Paul scored 216 runs at 30.86 with a top score of
62 against Randwick-Petersham. He was the only batsman to score more than 110 runs and
average more than 16. To say he was the backbone of the batting this season is an understatement.
Congratulations on an excellent performance.
Vinayak Sasitharan
Vinnie continues to develop as a cricketer and showed on a number of occasions this season he
can cut it amongst the higher levels. Although not an overly successful season with the bat in PG‟s
the maturity shown to dig the side out of trouble against Hawkesbury and ultimately play a large
role in that victory a sign of things to come from Vinnie.
Other Players
Thanks to Rizwan Khan, Joe Mennie, Luke Miner, Tom O‟Neil, Llewellyn Gartrell, Kabilan
Bascaran, Nathan Brown, Sachinpal Singh and Mitchell Starc who all graced the paddock during
the season. We look forward to seeing more of you in the coming years.

Financial Statement 2008/09
The Club's Financial Statement pleasingly reveals an excess of income over expenditure in this
financial year.
Wests Ashfield has once again provided generous financial support and we are extremely
grateful for their commitment to our club. With their assistance, we have not only been able to
continue our Junior and Senior Development programs, but we have also been able to
concentrate on coaching as a catalyst for success. Our players have scaled to new heights this
year with Phil Hughes representing Australia and Mitchell Starc making his debut as a 19
year old for New South Wales. Though it is a loss for the club we are also proud to note that
Matthew Day was offered a rookie contract for Tasmania for the next season.
We also appreciate the continued contribution to the Club by Cricket NSW.
We are very grateful to Geoff Laing and the various committee members and volunteers who
organized the magnificent business lunch for the club as the major fund raising activity for the
year.
We would like to thank the tireless efforts of Mark Russell and other volunteers including Sue
and Ben Gorham and Lisa Nimmo in running the canteen.
With the continued support of Wests Ashfield and other sponsors, as well as the proactive
organization of various functions, we were able to invest in specialized coaching which
proved to be of enormous benefit to all players within the club.
A renewed effort was made in junior development and as a result we have seen a growing
number of young talents who are delivering great results for the club as evidenced by the fact
that 6th grade were the Metro Cup finalists this year.
Once again we wish to thank our Principal Sponsor Wests Ashfield, and in particular their
Chairman Peter Hardgrove, his fellow Directors and General Manager, Andy Timbs for the
generous financial support provided to our Club.
