Align Pump and Assemble
Start bolts, leave pump halves loose.
Slide Pump Tool over stator spline.
Push tool, while wiggling pump body making
sure tool enters and snugs in pump bushing.
Tighten the pump bolts to18 ft lbs.
This pump is fussy about alignment.
If it’s off more than a few thou it self
destructs. Thanks for your attention.

Remove 3/16 Allen plugs in pan and extension housing. Fill transmission
through the extension housing hole until fluid FLOWS out check hole in pan.
Recommended Fluid is: “MERCON V”
If other types of fluids are put in this unit it may develop chatters & squawks.

Coast downshift clunk
Neutrals at a stop.
Make sure the flats on the lever shaft
the rooster comb and cable arm are
not badly worn. Wear here causes
the manual valve to miss-align and
cause above complaints.

Hold converter between your knees and
turn adapter plate clockwise. While holding
adapter firmly in position have someone
tighten 8 nuts GENTLY, then torque them.

5R55W/S uses a stamped steel piston
and spring retainer.
The 5R55N uses an aluminum piston
and has a spacer ring 1999-01.
2002 and later is the same as 5R55W/S

also different having 23 tooth
pinion gears.
The 5R55N uses 19 tooth gears
until 2002 and then is the same
as 5R55W/S models.
These early and late planets
were different on tooth
counts but are then same effective gear ratios and can
interchanged as assemblies.
5R55W/S forward ring gear
uses 101 teeth.
The 5R55N has 85 teeth from
1999-01and then in 2002 and
later is the same as 5R55W/S
models.
5R55 W & S sun gear has 55
teeth and no roller bearing in
bore.
The 5R55N has 47 teeth with
a roller bearing in the bore
until 1999 and then is the
same as the 5R55W/S
5R55W/S uses
wide spacer.
5R55N uses a
sprag assembly.

Technology and Ethics
The Technology IS the Ethic
If the sign on the building or any advertising says,
“Transmissions” that is declaration to the Universe
that you know how to fix them.
When a product or service is offered, the offer itself is a specific claim by the seller that he is accepting the MORAL and TECHNICAL responsibility
for correct function, for a reasonable length of
time, in exchange for money.
Regardless what you may call your repair, the job
is in your shop to have the complaints and failures
corrected. It doesn’t matter how honest you are,
as a person, if you do not fix the causes of the
complaints and failures where is the ethic?
Each transmission develops 3 to 5 complaints and
failures you see over and over again and again.
A service is ethical and deserving to the exact extent that your service corrects the causes of those
complaints and failures; and does not include a
whole bunch of parts that were not needed.
