Welcome to Millwoods Christian School! Millwoods Christian offers education from a Christian perspective to students
from kindergarten to grade twelve. Because of the Edmonton Public School Board’s commitment to choice in education,
we are able to provide a fully integrated Christian program for families and students who want an education that
challenges students to grow in Christian character and faith.
We aim to provide students with the best education possible. We strive for excellence in academics, athletics, performing
arts and servant leadership. We approach all areas of education, whether core curriculum, complementary courses, or
co-curricular activities from a Christian perspective and are committed to honouring Christ in all we do.

We believe that Millwoods Christian School must provide an education that is shaped by a faith rooted in Scripture.
Scripture, the divinely inspired and authoritative word of God, provides insight for every dimension of life. Christian
education, therefore, tells us how to understand ourselves in relationship to God, to others, and to the natural world.
We believe that God, (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) created and continues to maintain the entire universe. Early on, our first
parents rebelled against God. Since then all human lives have been marked by the suffering that stems from this broken relationship. The heart of the Bible’s message, and the reason we understand the gospel to be such good news, is the revelation that God has not abandoned His creation, but has determined to set things right!
We believe the redemptive intent of God finds its center in the life and work of Jesus Christ. In the person of Jesus, God
executes a just punishment against the sin of humankind, and graciously offers forgiveness to all. Because he suffered and
died, Jesus Christ reconciles sinful people to their Creator, and he fulfils God’s promise to restore the whole creation. By his
resurrection and ascension to his heavenly throne, Jesus Christ is both Saviour and Lord of the universe.
We believe this world and all who live in it belong to God. Although our world remains troubled and flawed, the work and
victory of Jesus give us hope. We eagerly wait for the day when Jesus Christ returns and is publicly acknowledged as Lord of
all. On that day, the redemptive purposes of God will be complete. God will erase every vestige of sin and suffering. Until
that day arrives, the Holy Spirit of God works faith in us and inspires us to live in ways which acknowledge the truth of the
good news in Jesus.
We believe that our place in God’s world is one of special privilege and responsibility. Made in God’s image, we human
beings are called to responsible stewardship: loving others and ourselves, and developing and preserving the resources of
creation. Since the entire universe is the Kingdom of our Lord; every dimension of life must be understood in relationship to
Him.
We believe that formal education finds its place within this broad framework of understanding ourselves in relationship to
God, to others and to the universe. We believe that children must be afforded the opportunity of learning about themselves,
others, and the universe, all in relation to the God who created, who maintains, and who one day will fulfill the redemptive
work begun in Jesus Christ. In order to fulfill this goal, and to fulfill our responsibility as a Christian community, our
children must have schools in which this faith perspective is integrated fully into the curriculum and is modeled by teachers
who personally share its convictions.
We believe that education involves the acquisition and mastery of knowledge, and the development of a critical, discerning
mind, both of which need to be rooted in the framework of the Scripture’s story. This will enable students to take their
places in society as responsible citizens, with both academic and spiritual integrity.

Our School Commitment
As a school, we will work hard to ensure that every student is successful. We will
provide a safe and positive learning environment and will maintain consistent
expectations for student behaviour. We will keep parents involved and informed and
will respond to your questions, concerns and ideas. As a Christian program, we are
committed to the spiritual growth of all students and the development of their
personal faith.
Parent Commitment
Parental support for the spiritual focus is essential in order for us to work as a team. At Millwoods Christian school, the B ible
will be applied to the entirety of the student’s educational experience and teachers will communicate Biblical principles,
morals and values. Bible class, Scripture memorization, chapel, spiritual emphasis days, and prayer are important components of our Christian program. As a parent we ask you to support this program by ensuring that your children participate in
all aspects of the Christian program including attendance at spiritual emphasis days and activities.
Student Commitment
At Millwoods Christian, Christian teachings will be applied to all areas of the school
day and teachers will communicate Biblical principles, morals and values.
Students will attend chapels, spriritual retreats, and Christian Studies classes and will
complete service projects as well as Scripture memory assignments. All of these are a
required part of our Christian program.
Celebrating Diversity
Millwoods Christian enjoys the diversity of a multi-cultural community. Our
families come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and experiences which
provides us with a rich opportunity to learn from and grow in appreciation of
each other.
Because we are also a multi-denominational school, our families have a variety
of perspectives on religion, spirituality, doctrine, and Christian living. It is our
goal not to focus on controversies, but rather to build on the common ground
we do have in our Christian faith.
We will at all times do our best to respect the individual family’s perspective
and will not in any way deride their beliefs. As is age appropriate, students need
to understand that families have different practices and commitments and that
it is the heart commitment to Christ and his teachings that is most important.

ENGLISH
English at the 30 level is required for an Alberta High School Diploma. It is also required for almost all post secondary educational programs.
Success in English Language Arts will prepare the student to succeed in all other courses and in the career of their choice.
English is the basis of communication no matter what your post secondary career ambitions.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 10-1, 20-1, 30-1
(5 CREDITS EACH)
This program provides students with the opportunity to enter any area of study the wish. If you are interested in university or college this is likely the program for you.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 10-2, 20-2, 30-2
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Students who are interested in college or trades may want to consider this more practical language study. However, not all
college programs accept 30-2 as an entrance prerequisite, so check carefully before you choose this program.
A diploma exam is required for English 30-1 and 30-2.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Social studies will provide you with the basic knowledge, skill and attitudes you need to play an important role as a citizen
in democratic nation.
A 30 level social studies course is required for a high school diploma. A diploma exam must be
written for Social Studies 30-1 and 30-2.
SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1/20-1/30-1
(5 CREDITS EACH)
This program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing post secondary studies at
the university or college level. In grade ten students study the impact of globalization and in
grade eleven they explore the complexities of nationalism in Canada and internationally. In
grade twelve, students evaluate political and economic systems and the interaction of nations
in the last century.
SOCIAL STUDIES 10-2, 20-2, 30-2
(5 CREDITS EACH)
This program is designed for students who want to go to college or technical school or to pursue a trade, rather than a university degree. The content is similar to 10-1, 20-1, or 30-1, however the expectations for critical thinking and application
have been modified to meet the needs of these students.

MATHEMATICS
Choose a Math program that will challenge you and help you achieve your goals.
MATH 10 C
(5 CREDITS EACH)
The “C” stands for “Combined” - This is the starting point for both the Mathematics –1 and
Mathematics –2 course sequences. Students who are not sure which course sequence they
want to follow right out of junior high will take Mathematics 10C and then choose which path
they want to take , in Grade 11. Either Mathematics 20-1 or Mathematics 20-2.
MATH 20-1 and 30-1
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Who should take the Mathematics –1 course sequence? Mathematics –1 is designed for students who plan to apply for post
-secondary programs that may require calculus skills. If you want to enter a post-secondary program such as engineering,
mathematics, sciences, some business studies, or other programs that require advanced math skills, you should take Mathematics –1.
MATH 20-2 and 30-2
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Who should take the Mathematics –2 course sequence? Mathematics –2 is designed for students who want to attend a university, college, or technical institute after high school, but do not need calculus skills. If you want to study at the postsecondary level in fields such as arts programs, some engineering and medical technologies, or some apprenticeship programs, you should take Mathematics –2. This sequence will fulfill most high-school students’ needs.
MATHEMATICS 31
(5 CREDITS)
Mathematics 30-1 is a co-requisite to Mathematics 31 and may be required for post-secondary calculus courses.
You should always check the most up-to-date information on post-secondary mathematics entrance requirements. A good
place to start is the admissions page of the post-secondary institution that you would like to attend, or the Alberta Learning
Information Service (ALIS) website, which outlines information regarding mathematics and requirements at post-

Satisfy your curiosity – take a science course!
SCIENCE 10/20/30
(5 CREDITS EACH)
This course helps students understand and apply the fundamental concepts and skills that are common to biology, chemistry, physics and earth and space sciences.
BIOLOGY 20/30
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Explore human physiology and the environment in which we live.
CHEMISTRY 20/30
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Study organic and inorganic matter and chemical changes.
PHYSICS 20/30
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Discover the science of kinematics, force, energy and motion.
SCIENCE 14/24
(5 CREDITS EACH)
Students who complete these courses will have a basic understanding of science. This course will not meet entrance
requirements for post-secondary institutions.

CAREER AND LIFE MANAGEMENT 20 (CALM)
(3 CREDITS)
CALM 20 is a required course for a senior high school diploma. This course provides students with the opportunity to
make well-informed decisions and choices in all aspects of life and to develop behaviours and attitudes that contribute to
the well-being and respect of them and others.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Millwoods Christian is proud to be offering AP courses in Math, Science, English and Social Studies. Students are able to
select one, some or all AP academic courses. Due to our school size, we are not able to offer all AP courses at the grade 12
level and what AP exams are offered will vary from year to year. Please contact school administration to find out more
about our AP program.
We believe that taking even a few AP courses can motivate students to challenge themselves at a higher level. Students at
MCS are encouraged to seek a deep understanding of their course work so they are confident about their learning and are
able to find success as they move forward in their academic pursuits. Our experienced and collaborative teaching staff will
support your child as they proceed through high school in both AP and regular courses.
WORK EXPERIENCE & RAP
Students at Millwoods Christian can earn credits for Work Experience or register for the Registered Apprenticeship Program. Both of these programs are offered through a partnership between Metro Continuing Education and Millwoods
Christian. Please see your Career Counsellor for further information.
WORK EXPERIENCE 15/25/35
(3 to 15 CREDITS)
These courses allow the student to connect and apply the
knowledge and skills learned in school to selected workplaces.
Under the supervision of a teacher, the student receives on –thejob training and has the opportunity to explore career options in a
variety of work placements. Students may earn a maximum of 15
credits in Work Experience.
RAP
(up to 40 CREDITS)
Students may also apply for the Registered Apprenticeship Program, preparing for a trade while completing high school.

CHRISTIAN STUDIES
Coursework (3 or 5 CREDITS)
Students who enrol at Millwoods Christian are expected to take at least
one Christian Education course in each year of their high school program.
Students are able to choose from the following courses, which are locallydeveloped, provincially approved courses offered for high school credit.
Christian Studies 15 - The Bible and Other Sacred Writings
Christian Studies 25 - The Life of Christ and Other Religious Leaders
Christian Studies 35 - Religion and Ethical Issues
Leadership, Character and Social Responsibility 15, 25, 35
(This course involves participation in an international service trip.)
Scripture Memory
We believe that the word of God is a powerful resource with which we can equip our students for life. Being familiar with
what the Bible says, understanding the meaning and putting the words to memory assist in a broader understanding of
faith.
Every student at MCS is expected to memorize the Scripture passages assigned to the Bible, Christian Studies or Leadership course they are completing. The selected passages support the theme of the course study and are an important part
of framing what is studied in class.
Chapel
All students are expected to attend the weekly chapel service, which provides the opportunity for our community to
worship together and grow deeper in our faith. Chapel is an integral part of setting the foundation for what shapes the
MCS community and because of this it is important that both staff and students are active participants.
The programming and delivery of the chapel program is overseen by our
Student Ministries Director. The Student Ministries Director works with
groups of students to develop leadership skills in the area of music, speaking
and faith development.
Spiritual Retreats
Each fall students participate in spiritual retreats. These events provide great
opportunities for our students to build strong relationships, be challenged in
their faith and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. As a core part of support for
our Christian program and a valuable piece of building school community,
participation in the spiritual retreats is a required part of being a student at
MCS.

LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE
Leading by example is an integral part of life at Millwoods Christian School and service to others is a required component
of every Christian Studies and Leadership course. Our students are given opportunities to grow as leaders in the community and share their faith in practical ways. Students from grade 9-12 will have the opportunity to participate in international service trips or be part of our Team Canada group that serves the Edmonton community.
Service Requirement
Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service and memorize 8 scripture passages as
assigned.
Team Canada
We believe it is important to make a difference where you live, and because of this, students are encouraged to serve
locally through a variety of school and community-based initiatives.
International Service Trips
Our students can impact the world! Not only do we encourage our teens to serve locally, we also give them an opportunity
to experience cross-cultural service in countries such as Belize, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

PERFORMING ARTS
DRAMA 10-20-30 (5CREDITS EACH)
MUSICAL THEATRE 15-25-35 (5 CREDITS EACH)
Students in grades 10-12 have the opportunity to continue to refine and often find their God
granted gifts through a program centered on public performance. We recognize that not
every student who desires to be part of a public performance has the same scope of talents,
but we also recognize and celebrate that the unique range of talents each student has can be
utilized as a “star” performer, a supporting member or behind the scenes.
MCS has a proud history of producing quality plays and musicals and as a result the program
has grown significantly. Choosing to deliver our program by teaching through performance
means that we need to select plays and musicals that provide ample opportunity for all
students.
To that end we carefully select scripts that while secular, have at their centre a message that either follows the spirit of
what Christ taught us or challenges us to be reflective of the performance we have seen. Our students walk a journey during the rehearsal process of a show, one that often challenges them to think of the world in a global perspective and understand how our history affects the world today. We provide our audience a snippet of our insight and our journey in
the program with a “Lessons Learned” section.

PERFORMING ARTS
Dance Performance (3 CREDITS)
In this locally developed course, students will have the opportunity to use
their creative skills and talents while they learn technique, choreography and
performance.
Choir 10/20/30 (3-5 CREDITS)
At MCS, the three levels of choir are taught together in a “show choir” format. A
variety of sacred and secular music is selected that will both challenge and allow
for the group to shine. This course offers an opportunity for students to show
leadership as section leaders or rehearsal pianists.
Tour Band (3 CREDITS)
Students in grades 10-12 with previous band experience may join our tour band. The tour band prepares an hour long
concert that is performed in a variety of locations during the middle of May. Our goal is to share the gifts that God has
blessed us with to the world and allow for us to demonstrate a Christ-centered life in our actions to the audiences we encounter.

PHYSICAL AND RECREATION EDUCATION
Students at MCS are given opportunity to participate in physical education in a variety of classes offered at the high school
level.
Physical Education
Physical Education 10—This is a required course for all students in order to qualify for a
diploma.

Physical Education 20—This course is offered as a semestered course as well as a full year
course.

Recreational Leadership
(3 Credits)
In this course, students will learn various aspects of involvement in sports from
injury management, sport psychology, physical development, mental attitude
and personal growth in character and sportsmanship.
Outdoor Pursuits
(3 Credits)
In this course, students will experience a variety of outdoor activities while developing knowledge and understanding about the environment, personal
growth, group dynamics, lifestyles, skills and safety. Students will approach the
planning of outdoor activities with a positive regard for themselves, for others
and for the environment.

ATHLETICS
At MCS we believe athletics is more than competition between two teams of individuals representing different schools; it
is an educational experience between the coach and the team through practice, competition, and person-to-person relationships. Participation in athletics contributes to good character development, good sportsmanship and the development
of God-given talents and abilities. We expect our athletes and coaches to work hard, enjoy the sport, respect each other
and their opponents and honor Christ in all they do.
Our athletic program provides a means to teach young people how to compete and grow in the context of a Christian
worldview. Our teams must participate in such a way that honor comes to the team, the school and the Lord. Millwoods
Christian School athletes and coaches must play fairly, observe regulations and policies, treat others with courtesy and
respect, and accept adversity without complaining.
Millwoods Christian is committed to developing a perspective on winning and losing that is consistent with the teachings
of Scripture. We require our coaches and athletes to dedicate themselves to this goal. Our challenge is to be in contrast to
a sports world that all too often emphasizes winning at any cost. Winning should be one of our goals, but we recognize
that losing can present a beneficial learning experience. To this end, Millwoods Christian strives for excellence with Christ
-like character in all athletic endeavors.
Our approach to athletics has garnered success for the
MCS Royals, with several of our teams having the opportunity
to compete in provincial play-offs for their sport. Our students
have also enjoyed success at the provincial level in individual
pursuits such as badminton and track and field.

VISUAL ARTS
Art 10-20-30 (3 or 5 CREDITS)
In our art program, students explore the elements and principles of design through use of a variety of media. Instruction
in and application of technique encourages students to explore their creativity, try new approaches and master
fundamental skills. Students are also encouraged to analyze pieces of their own work, as well as the work of others.

CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (CTS)
Food Studies
In our Food Studies Program, students examine the role
of food, looking beyond consumption to production, visual appreciation, nutrition, meal planning, economics
and preparation. Students are provided with regular
opportunities to develop their culinary skills while receiving instruction in technique and safe food handling.
As one of our most popular options, there is always
something delicious happening in our food lab.
Construction Technology
Our Construction courses provide the opportunity for student to develop skills in the use of tools and materials used
in construction processes. They are taught about the safe use of tools and complete projects which transform common wood materials into useful products.

ADDITIONAL CTS COURSES and OPTIONS
Business—Students learn the basics of starting a business, the components of investment and the skills required to be a
successful entrepreneur.
Information and Technology Studies—Millwoods Christian offers a variety of computer related studies such as Communication Technology, Information Processing, Computing Science, Media and Design.
Health Science— Students prepare for medical careers by examining the anatomy and function of the body systems.
Develop first aid, CPR and occupational safety skills necessary for careers in emergency response.
Legal Studies - In this course, students will become familiar with the influence, impact and complexities of the law in
daily life.
Forensics—Students are given the opportunity to explore how scientific concepts from a variety of disciplines apply specifically to this unique field. This course will promote the importance of scientific literacy and problem solving techniques.
Psychology— The course is designed to develop within the student the skills and understandings that make it possible
for effective living in our complex environment. The student’s attention will focus on the scientific approach to understanding human behaviour so that he or she may appreciate more fully the reasons that underlie one’s own acts and those
of others.
Pop Culture—Students study how entertainment, advertising art and music shape and respond to culture.
Study of Film—This course is intended for students who wish to expand their knowledge of film and understanding of
film-making.

Presented to the student who has the highest combined average in Social Studies 30-1 and English Language Arts 30-1.
Grade 12 Math/Science Award—Awarded $100.00
Presented to the student who has the highest combined average in Math 30-1 and at least two 30 level Sciences.
Grade 12 Applied Math/Science Award—Awarded $100.00
Presented to the student who has the highest average in Math 30-2 and Science 30.

Governor General’s Award—Awarded a Plaque and Medal
Awarded to the top academic grade 12 student based on highest overall academic average as determined by the school.
Academic Excellence Awards—Awarded Medallion and Grade 10 Bronze $50, Silver $75, Gold $100; Grade 11 Bronze
$75, Silver $100, Gold $125; Grade 12 Bronze 100, Silver $125, Gold$150.
Awarded to the top three academic students per grade 10-12 as determined by weighted course averages.
Service and Scripture Draw—Awarded $100.00
Names of students who have earned a service and/or Scripture certificate will have their names entered into the draw. One
draw per grade in 10, 11 and 12. (Certificates are earned for acts of service …)
Academic Excellence Draw—Awarded $100.00
Names of students who have earned an honours standing will have their names entered into the draw. One draw per grade
in 10, 11 and 12.
Daniel Award Draw—Awarded $100.00
Names of students who have earned a Daniel Award Certificate will have their names entered into the draw. One draw for
high school grades 9-12.
Honours—Certificates
Awarded to students who have an average mark of 79.5-89.4%
Honours with Distinction—Certificates
Awarded to students who have an average mark of 89.5 and higher.
Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship— Awarded up to $2500.00
Awarded to all students with a minimum combined average based on five designated courses in at least one of grade 10, 11
or 12, and who is entering post secondary studies or apprenticeship program.

HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Citizenship Award—Awarded a Medallion and $100.00
Awarded to one student in each grade who demonstrate a servant heart through involvement in school and/or community
service, either in an official capacity or through self-initiated acts of service. positively contributes to the school community
spirit and has a desire to incorporate service to others as part of his/her future endeavors.
Leadership Award—Awarded a Medallion and $100.00
Awarded to one student from each grade who demonstrates key roles in one or more student leadership opportunities
(performing arts, service, student council, Christian programs, etc.), a desire to mentor peers and other encouraging leadership and development, in good academic standing and viewed by staff to be working to the best of their abilities and is committed to continuing to develop as a leader.
Discipleship Award—Awarded a Medallion and $250.00
Awarded to the grade 12 student who demonstrates a passion for personal spiritual growth and encouraging spiritual
growth in others. The student has demonstrated spiritual leadership through participating in activities such as chapel worship teams, student Bible study or prayer and participation in Christian Studies/Leadership courses.
MCSS Ministry Scholarship—Awarded $250.00 per scholarship.
Awarded to one or two grade 12 students who are entering a full time multi-year diploma or degree program at a recognized Bible college or university. The student has demonstrated proficiency in the components of his/her Christian Studies
courses while at MCS.
Religious Studies Award—Awarded a Medallion and $100.00
Awarded to the student in each grade who achieved the highest average in either a Christian Studies or Leadership course
for that academic year.
Howard Lund Biblical Studies Award—Awarded a Medallion and $200.00
Awarded to the grade 12 student who has the highest overall combined average for achievement in three Christian Studies
or Leadership courses.
Scripture Memorization—Awarded Certificates
Awarded to students who have completed all of their Scripture Memory work with a mark of 80% or higher.

HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
ATHLETICS
Senior High Male/Female Athlete of the Year—Awarded a Trophy and Medallion
Awarded to the senior high male/female student who has demonstrated superior athletic ability in extracurricular sports. Leadership and Christian character are also distinguished criteria.
Senior Royals Athletic Award—Awarded a Trophy, Medallion and $150.00
Awarded to a high school student who has been involved in MCS sports throughout junior and

Awarded to the student who has contributed copious amounts of time, and energy to the theatre program at Millwoods
Christian. This individual has not necessarily been on stage but has given of themselves to ensure that multiple productions have been successful.
Senior High Vocal Award—Awarded a Plaque and Medallion
Awarded to the student that best demonstrates skill in singing, pursues excellence in music, demonstrates eagerness to use
music in worship and encourages others to become involved.
Senior High Band Award—Awarded a Medallion
Awarded to the student enrolled in band who has demonstrated superb skill in areas such as technique, musicianship and
tone. Student will also encourage others to become involved and mentors younger players.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Millwoods Christian School is an Alternative Christian Program within Edmonton Public Schools. As such, there are
additional fees associated with attending MCS. These fees are taken in by the Millwoods Christian School Society (MCSS) at
Calvary Community Church. For more information on these fees and the responsibilities of MCSS you can contact their
office at 780-462-8444.
As a Christian program, we require all students and parents to fill out and sign a Commitment Form to our Christian Alternative Program. Please read our Statement of Faith and our Missions Statement as these are important aspects to life at
Millwoods Christian School.
myPass is a service that provides students with direct access to their education information. It enables high school
students and their parents to se their final high school courses and marks (including diploma marks) and to track progress
towards their diploma or certificate. Through myPass, students can also access their detailed academic history (regardless
of school attended), and order transcripts.
Students can request access at any time by going to
myPass.alberta.ca and registering for an Education
Account. Once an Education Account is created, the
student must return to myPass.alberta.ca and request access. A myPass email will be sent to the student (the student should keep the email), then a sign
-up letter with a 4-digit PIN will then be mailed to the
student’s home address. This letter, in combination
with the myPass email, will be used to complete the
sign up process.
How are we doing?
Our grade 12 students consistently perform in the top quartile of schools in the province and generally rank in the top five
high schools in the Edmonton Public School Board. Our most recent ranking placed us 25th out of 400 traditional and online high schools in the province and second among Edmonton Public high schools.
