Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
My warmest greetings to the Philippine Physical Therapy Association, as you hold your 2012
National Convention.
A healthy citizen is a productive citizen, eager and equipped to contribute to the shared task of
nation-building. Indeed, medical practitioners like yourselves play a significant role in sustaining
an empowered citizenry, as you respond positively to the medical needs of your patients who
suffer from disability or impairment due to injury or illness. May this convention raise the bar of
excellence among your members, and create more jobs and livelihood opportunities for our
Filipino physical therapist. This undertaking benefits them, their families, and our entire nation.
We in government are pleased to have the PPTA as our staunch ally in nation-building.
Together, let us uphold the ideals of compassion, professionalism, and excellence, as we fulfill
the clamor for genuine and lasting change that the Filipino people deserve.

GREETINGS TO DELEGATES ATTENDING THE PPTA 2012 NATIONAL CONVENTION
It is a pleasure to extend ward greetings to the Executive, Organizing Committee, and members
of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association and to wish you well for your convention on 2122 July. The theme of Trabaho...Buhay...Pagbabago sounds exciting and the concepts are
certainly important in this day of demands for high standards of professional practice, making
time for continuing professional development, ensuring that practice is evidence based and at
the same time keeping an appropriate work life balance.
When we consider Trabaho (Work) it is important to ensure that we do not depend on
knowledge obtained at entry to practice but take on the professional responsibility of continuing
to question practice, develop our body of knowledge through research and sharing that
information at every opportunity including with our work colleagues, at conferences and through
our publications.
For Buhay (Life) we need to keep the door open to learn from colleagues who have had
opportunities to advance their practice and/or research in other work environments whether they
be at home or overseas. With modern technology travel is no longer essential in order to have
contact with physical therapy experts from around the world – we can read their research on line
and download their treatment concepts at our desks - but we cannot refine the skills and hear
the anecdotes that are the essence of face to face learning.
In regard to Pagbabgo (Changes) an important component of best physiotherapy practice is to
be prepared to modify our patient management by the use of sound clinical reasoning which is
based on the best available evidence.
Attendance at conferences such as your National Convention enables us to keep Trabaho…
Buhay...and Pagbabago in perspective. There will also be an opportunity to address these
issues at the next WCPT Asia Western Pacific Regional conference to be held in Taiwan in
September 2013. I look forward to meeting many of you there.
Yours sincerely
Dr Margot Skinner
WCPT Executive Member (Asia Western Pacific Region)

CSB Hotel, International Conference Center, Manila
Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
It gives me great pleasure to bring greetings from the Asia West Pacific Region of WCPT to the
Philippine Physical Therapy Association on the occasion of their National Conference 2012.
The need for Physical Therapist in all our countries increases daily as populations age, as there
are increases in chronic diseases and trauma to name a few. Physical Therapists are well
educated and trained to deal with factors that affect a person‟s movement and their ability to
participate in daily activities as fully as possible with their family, their local community or the
society in which they live more broadly.
I wish you all the best for your National Conference where delegates will hear about the latest
evidence for practice from researchers, clinicians will present the work they do based around
evidence and students will present their research. Conferences are times for listening and
thinking and for making new friends and building up networks in order to move forward in the
practice of Physical Therapy so that you can achieve better health outcomes for the people of
the Philippines. .
Best wishes for a very successful National Conference, 2012.
Regards
Associate Professor Gillian Webb
Chair, AWP region, WCPT.

Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
Greetings to the officers, members and organizers of this year‟s National Convention with the
theme, “#PinoyPT: Trabaho…Buhay…Pagbabago.” We truly commend the Philippine Physical
Therapy Association for having furthered the rights of Filipino physical therapists for almost half
a century.
The Department of Health shares your vision of providing the impetus for a stronger physical
therapy profession in the Philippines. The Aquino Health Agenda of Kalusugan Pangkalahatan,
focuses on achieving universal health for all through the three thrusts of PhilHealth enrolment,
enhancement of health facilities and attainment of the Millennium Development Goals. Health
professionals like our physical therapists play a vital role in these three thrusts being the service
provider and conduit of quality health care. You have taken it as your mandate to participate in
the continuing education of the public on prevention, health maintenance and programs that
promote health, wellness and fitness. We, at the Department of Health, want to ensure that we
have the health care providers especially for our indigent patients. Being the neglected part of
our society, the poor are in most need of your expertise, service and presence in the
communities. Our health facilities count the physical therapists as an important part of their
team in ensuring that health care delivery is covered in all points, from the diagnosis, to
treatment and to further rehabilitation.
The partnership between the DOH and the PPTA should further develop in ways that could
create more responsive solutions and nurturing environments for our country‟s PTs. Your
support and commitment in promoting quality health care in your field of specialty, we would like
to assure you, is greatly appreciated. Continue in striving for excellence and relevance as we
aim for Kalusugan Pangkalahatan or Universal Health Care for all Filipinos.
Congratulations and mabuhay kayong lahat!

Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
On behalf of the PRC Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy, I would like to greet and
welcome delegates to the 2012 PPTA National Convention.
It is our fervent wish that this meeting will bring together most of our Physical Therapists
involved in the delivery of one of the best Physical therapy care in the world while sharing
experiences and fostering friendship and camaraderie.
The Philippine Physical Therapy profession is a vibrant discipline and many advances have
been made in recent years both in the basic sciences and patient care while faced with the
perennial challenge of managing patients with finite resources.
Congratulations to the PPTA officers and organizers of this meeting for crafting a
comprehensive program. We are privileged to have this array of scientific topics responsive to
the present needs and concerns of the profession.
We have high hopes that PPTA will remain focused on the noble goal of improving the lives of
the Filipino disabled.
May you have more FUN in the PPTA and in this 2012 National Convention.

Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
Greetings to the Philippine Physical Therapy Association as it holds its PPTA 2012 National
Convention.
Founded on December 8, 1964, the PPTA was envisioned to promote the professional
advancement and to provide continuing educational growth for physical therapists in the
country. Since then the PPTA has evolved into an organization which has produced members
who have done extension work such as its agreement with the Bantay Bata Foundation and the
initiation of special interest groups (SIGS) within the association.
This year‟s conference has chosen a significant theme “Pinoy PT: Trabaho… Buhay…
Pagbabago”, which stresses the crucial role of physical therapist in the nation‟s life. As an
established and regulated profession, physical therapy has long served the needs of numerous
sectors of the community.
The Commission on Higher Education is fully in support of this conference that seeks not only to
strengthen the profession but to help point the way to making the profession more responsive to
the health care needs of our people.
Mabuhay!

Our warm greetings to the delegates of the PPTA 2012 National Convention on July 22, 2012
and congratulations to the Philippine Physical Therapy Association.
The theme, “#PinoyPT: Trabaho… Buhay… Pagbabago…” aptly reflects the thrust of the
Association‟s activities and programs in line with its mission to provide the impetus for a
stronger physical therapy profession in the country. Indeed, through exchange of knowledge
and expertise from convention resource speakers, participants can draw the inspiration and
encouragement needed to enliven strategic moves and initiatives including those affecting the
lot of PT students seen as future professionals.
Through the efforts of PPTA, our people‟s awareness on the role of PT in the area of health
care is being widened. We therefore wish PPTA continuing success as we also look forward to
a multitude of world- class Pinoy physical therapists.

#PinoyPT Trabaho… Buhay… Pagbabago
July 21 -22, 2012
CSB Hotel, International Conference Center, Manila
Providing the impetus for a stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines
The previous PPTA conventions dealt with Filipino physical therapists broadening their reach
(PPTA 2010, Manila) and being an agent of change (PPTA 2011, Davao City). Following these,
the Organizing Committee of the PPTA 2012 National Convention was challenged to make the
program focus on recurring concerns of the Filipino physical therapist that resonate in each of
us and affect our participation in Philippine society as a professional.
The PPTA 2012 theme “#PinoyPT: Trabaho… Buhay… Pagbabago” (Work… Life… Change)
touches on three important areas of concern that bind physical therapy students, beginning
practitioners and experienced professionals. How do I develop my work abilities as teacher,
researcher or clinician? How shall my life be if I choose to open my own clinic as a business, do
home care or work abroad? And, just as important, what new knowledge must I learn to make
my chosen practice current? True to the tradition of our conventions, PPTA 2012 aims to give
insight on the practice of our profession and the issues it is confronted with.
Regular convention attendees would notice a difference in the convention programming and
timing. These were done so that PPTA 2012 would complement two international events later in
the year: the 3rd Asia Physical Therapy Students Association (APTSA) Congress on November
14-16 hosted by our own Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students (APPTS) and the
8th Pan Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation (8th PPCR) on November 16-18 to be jointly hosted
by PPTA and the University of Santo Tomas. We organized PPTA 2012 differently and earlier
than our usual September to encourage everyone to also attend these worthwhile events, both
of which will be held in Manila for the first time.
A warm welcome to PPTA 2012! May it infuse us with further appreciation of our profession, the
different lives we choose to lead and challenges we must embrace to broaden our reach, effect
change and be fully involved in society. We hope our conversations today on work, life and
change continues at the 3rd APTSA Congress and 8th PPCR!

Mabuhay!
Two years from now, the Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc., the only recognized
professional organization for Filipino Physical Therapist will be celebrating its 50th founding
year. I am honoured to be a member of this organization, or should I say a solid institution that
serves as the agonist to continuously uplift the profession and support, defend, and guide its
stakeholders. And even more proud that I have contributed something to the organization by
being one of the officers and now, leading a group of committed, dynamic, and rational Filipino
PTs in staging an event like this that will mark as the countdown to the PPTA 2014.
This year‟s organizing committee prepared a program and invited credible resource speakers
that can update us with the present status of the profession in the country all across the different
fields of practice and specialization, and what is in store for the profession in the succeeding
years, both local and overseas setting. Thus, it leads to the formulation of “#Pinoy PT:
Trabaho (Work), Buhay (Life), and Pagbabago (Trabaho).” The theme of this year‟s
convention is also in line with the thrust of the PPTA which is “Providing the impetus for a
stronger physical therapy profession in the Philippines.” Let this convention be another
living testimony that we, Filipino Physical Therapists, are in one to show the entire nation and to
the world the vitality of our profession in the healthcare system. Let us make
#FilipinoPhysicalTherapist a trending topic.
With this, I congratulate and salute the men and women behind this momentous event. A big
thank you also for unselfishly extending your time, efforts and other possible resources just to
come up with an event that will cater the interest and present needs of not just only the Filipino
professional physical therapists and other professionals related to our practice, but as well as to
the future of the profession and the association, the Filipino PT Students.
To our participants, Welcome to the PPTA 2012 National Convention, and Maraming salamat
po sa suporta!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
It is with great pleasure to serve as your keynote speaker for the 2012 National Convention.
The theme #Pinoy PT: Trabaho…Buhay…Pagbabago is very apt for many young physical
therapists who are eager to jumpstart or step up their careers at this time of great challenges
and opportunities. Although together we may be facing a global economic recession; and
individually face many other life changing developments, these are also the times when we
really discover our true worth. Whether as individuals or as a professional body, we should
tirelessly and unselfishly develop our knowledge, attitudes and skills to enable us to succeed in
a dynamically changing environment.
My best wishes to all PT students, physical therapists and to the PPTA.

Press Information
The Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc is a local professional organization of Filipino
Physical Therapists duly recognized by local government bodies like the Professional
Regulation Commission. The Association is also a member organization of the World
Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) and Asian Confederation of Physical Therapy.
PPTA members, non-PPTA members, and Physical Therapy students annually convene in an
event like this that serves as one of the continuing education programs. It aims to reinforce the
knowledge and skill a physical therapist should possess by listening to lectures provided by
speakers in the field of Physical Therapy and other disciplines related to Physical Therapy.
Moreover, research papers are also presented in this event to further ponder the practice of
Physical Therapy in the Philippines.
In past conventions, PPTA basically highlighted the emerging roles of Physical Therapist in the
society and reinforced the definition of Physical Therapy. This year, the PPTA convention will still
continue to feature why and how Filipino Physical Therapists are one of the well respected
professions in the country.
The main objectives of this year‟s convention include the following:
1. Explore other possible avenues where a physical therapist can practice his/her skills
after acquiring their license
2. Discuss opportunities that await the future physical therapists locally and abroad from
the perspectives of fellow Filipino physical therapists who have tried working in
rehabilitation facilities outside the country and from the employers
3. Discuss different ethical principles governing international recruitment practices
4. Discuss the present vital issues faced by Filipino physical therapists and the profession
5. Provide a venue for Filipino physical therapists coming from the different parts of the
archipelago to interact about their sentiments concerning trending issues of the
profession in their respective localities that might have a national impact
PARTICIPANTS
This one-day pre-convention and one-day convention proper are organized by PPTA members
coming from the different institutions from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Expected attendees
for this year‟s convention includes PPTA and Non-PPTA members, students from various
schools that may or may not be affiliated with the special project arm of the PPTA which is the
Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students, more popularly known as APPTS, and
other professionals that are connected to Physical Therapy.

SPEAKER’S PROFILE
Pre-Convention Seminar 1
Oncology in Physical Therapy 101
Speaker: Jeannette Q. Lee, PT, PhD, CSCS, MLD/CDT
This basic/intermediate level session provides an overview of the role of physical therapy in the
management of individuals living with, living through, or living beyond cancer. Basic principles
on cancer pathogenesis, diagnosis, and medical management and treatment of common
cancers are discussed. Foundational knowledge and tools to perform an initial PT evaluation
and develop an appropriate plan of care are presented.
About the speaker: Ms. Lee is an Assistant Professor for the UCSF/SFSU
Graduate Program in Physical Therapy teaching lecture and laboratory content in
acute care and multi-systems dysfunction and evidence-based practice, and
responsible for supervising student research in both entry-level and postprofessional programs, engaging in scholarly activities, as well as performing
service activities within the university and in the community. She completed her
Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Sto. Tomas
College of Rehabilitation Sciences in 1994, and earned her Masters and PhD in
Physical Therapy from the Texas Woman’s University in 2001 and 2006
respectively.
Pre-Convention Seminar 2
What We May Have Missed: Dysfunction of the Fascia and Current Treatment
Speaker: Rheysonn Cornilla, PTRP, DMS, CMT
A primary somatic dysfunction causes an entire dysfunctional pattern which affects both posture
and movement. It is not uncommon for the primary to be different and away from the location of
a patient's pain complaint. Identifying the primary should be a part of the Physical Therapist's
assessment because treating the primary can turn off an entire dysfunctional pattern and may
lead to a better resolution of symptoms.
This short session aims to present a method of assessment that can aid the Filipino Physical
Therapist in finding a patient's primary somatic dysfunction through an assessment of fascial
bias or tissue preference at transitional zones of the body.
The concept of primary dysfunction
Assessment of fascial bias
The relevance of the transitional zones
Compensatory Patterns
Identifying the primary based on tissue preferences
About the speaker: Mr. Cornilla is the physical therapist and sports trainer for
injury prevention and rehabilitation of the Powerade Tigers Team of the
Philippine Basketball Association. He earned his degree in Bachelor of Science
in Physical Therapy from the Philippine Rehabilitation Institute Foundation, Inc. in
2006. He is currently pursuing a degree in Master of Occupational Health from
the University of the Philippines Manila.

RESEARCH PRESENTATION ABSTRACTS
IS LOKOMAT® TRAINING MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR TREATING
PATIENTS WITH STROKE?
Stubbs, Peter W.1,2
1
2
Department of Physical Therapy , Emilio Aguinaldo College, Ermita 1000, Manila
Hammel Neurorehabilitation and Research Centre, 15 Voldbyvej, Hammel, 8450, Denmark
Background and Purpose
In Europe, there has been an increase in robot assisted training. The robots are large,
expensive and aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, some people believe that robot training will be
more effective than conventional physical therapy. The Lokomat® is a common robot assisted
gait orthoses. A standardized gait pattern (sagittal–hip and knee angles) is programmed into the
Lokomat and patients are guided to move in this standardized pattern using an exoskeleton
attached to the legs. A guidance force (0%-100%) is administered to the hip and knee to assist
patients unable to perform the movements voluntarily. The purpose of the current paper is to
review current research and assess if Lokomat® training is more effective than conventional
Physical Therapy when assessing standard clinical outcome measures.
Method
A literature search was performed in Pubmed using the terms (locomat OR Lokomat) AND
rehabilitation”. All clinical trials investigating stroke patients regardless of randomization method
and blinding are included. All clinical outcome measures following training paradigms are
summarized.
Results
Six studies were identified. The efficacy of Lokomat® training differed between studies and
outcome measures. Generally, the papers indicated that Lokomat® training was more effective
or as effective as physical therapy, however one large multicentre study indicated the contrary.
As the studies generally had small sample sizes and heterogeneous Lokomat® protocols (with a
lack of a detailed Lokomat® protocol explanation), patients, and outcome measures, it is difficult
to make firm conclusions with regards to Lokomat® training.
Conclusions
Generally, physical therapy training is not more effective than Lokomat® training in stroke
rehabilitation. Despite this, there are conflicting results which is likely due to the heterogeneity of
the studies. More standardized randomized controlled multicenter trials are required to indicate
its effectiveness in rehabilitation.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXTUAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT DIABETIC FOOT
MANAGEMENT OF FILIPINOS OF LOW SOCIOECONOMIC POSITION
Sardan, Vanessa L.1,2

College of Rehabilitation Sciences, De La Salle University- Health Sciences Institute
College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences, University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial
Medical Center
2
Background and Purpose
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) remains to be the leading cause of lower extremity amputation (LEA)
worldwide. There is a disparity in the rates of LEA, with the population of low socioeconomic
position (SEP) at a disadvantage. According to the WHO, the disparity observed is not because
of difference in pathogenesis, but rather because of contextual factors adjoining the low SEP.
This qualitative study explored the phenomenon of LEA among diabetic Filipinos of low SEP, in
an attempt to discover unique contextual factors which acted as proximal and distal mediators to
LEA.
Method
This is a qualitative case study design which used the social constructivist paradigm to answer
its research questions. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling from the
amputee database of three institutions. Theoretical saturation was used to identify the sample
size requirement. Each interview was transcribed and went through two rounds of coding for
data analysis. A follow-up interview was performed after the initial coding to clarify emerging
concepts. The pattern matching method of case studies was used to compare the results to an
existing epidemiological conceptual framework set as the theoretical proposition of this study.
Results
A total of five participants underwent in-depth interviews in their respective homes. Data
analysis revealed that diabetic Filipinos from the low SEP have proximal and distal mediators to
LEA similar to what was stipulated in the theoretical proposition. However, participants‟
psychological dynamics (perceptions, experiences and personality types) which served as
barrier to their management of DM was not included as a factor neither in the theoretical
proposition nor in literature of LEA secondary to DM. This suggests that psychological dynamics
is an overlooked contextual factor that may adversely affect health outcomes through its effect
on health decisions and behaviors. A logic model was constructed and revealed that the
psychological dynamics at the crossroad, relating different factors influencing health decisions,
behaviors and health outcomes.
Conclusions
As important as biological, pathological and environmental causes of disease is the role of
psychological dynamics as a mediator to health outcomes. Knowledge of how psychological
dynamics affect patients‟ health-related decisions and behaviors may improve how healthcare
professionals facilitate lifestyle changes to patients most especially those belonging to the low
SEP.

BARRIERS TO PHYSICAL FUNCTIONING FOLLOWING A STROKE: A QUALITATIVE
STUDY
Dela Cruz, Marissa P. 1
1
San Pedro College, Davao City
Background and Purpose: Physical therapists recognize the importance of re-integration and
participation of the patients in the community. This qualitative study explored the barriers to
physical functioning of patients who suffered from stroke, specifically, environmental and
accessibility barriers to availing physical therapy services.
Method:, Patients with stroke who were receiving clinic-based physical therapy services at the
time of the study were recruited and interviewed about environmental and accessibility barriers
to utilizing physical therapy. Qualitative methods such as narrative analysis and thematic coding
were applied.
Results: Nine (9) patients with stroke, aged 48-80 years old with mean age 59.4 years
participated in teh study. Commonly mentioned barriers to accessibility of physical therapy
services, included: absence of a caregiver, lack of money for fare and payment for services,
distant location of center, physical health, poor weather, shortage of physical therapists and
unavailability of transporation. On the other hand, the participants seemed to perceive that
Davao City provides a favourable physical environment for persons with disabilities (PWDs) as
the roads are cemented, well lighted and safe.
Conclusion: To be more effective in patient care and to ensure re-integration of the PWDs in
the society, physical therapists, local government units, people in the community and other
health care professionals, need to be aware of the existence of barriers to physical functioning
of patients with stroke. Such awareness can help healthcare professionals, LGUs, and people in
the community to become collaborators in addressing the special needs of PWDs, thus helping
them to improve their quality of life.

Background and Purpose: Dizziness is a common symptom that is usually left untreated in
patients affected by vestibular disorders. This study aims to determin the prevalence of
dizziness among patients referred to two audiological centers at the UST hospital for the past
five years.
Method: A quantitative descriptive retrospective design using records review was done. Ethical
approval was obtained from the UST College of Rehabilitation Sciences Ethics Review Board.
Records over the past five (5) years of patients with complaints of dizziness, who underwent the
videonystagmography (VNG) procedure were gathered and reviewed from two audiological
centers. A data extraction tool was developed to gather medical records. The tool included key
data such as date of VNG examination, age, gender, result of VNG examination and diagnoses.
All patient records with missing data were excluded from the study. Data were presented
analyzed descriptive statistics.
Results: Out of 794 patients who complained of dizziness from August 2006 to July 2011, 545
were female. The modal and mean age is 37 and 47 among females and males, respectively.
Of those who had VNG, 71.79% had abnormal findings, most of which were found in the age
range of 55 to 59 years old. Among patients with abnormal findings, 71.93% had other
peripheral vestibular disorders, 25.44% had BPPV, and only 2.63% had central disorders.
Conclusions: In at least two audiological centers in Metro Manila, there is a relatively high
prevalence (72%) of dizziness over the past five years, most commonly caused by peripheral
vestibular disorder. These patients may benefit from referral to physical therapy for vestibular
rehabilitation.

Background and Purpose: Given the significant impact of ergonomics in the maintenance of
optimum physical health, less emphasis was given to its importance in the context of corporate
attire industry, specifically on the realm of undergraduate training for Hospitality Management.
This research was employed to evaluate the perceived musculoskeletal effects of wearing high
heel shoes among randomly selected BS Tourism students (freshman and junior class) in a
tertiary institution in the Philippines. Subsequently, this study purports to aid in establishing a
personal awareness of physical well-being, and the development of more responsive selfdirected healthcare among the critical population.
Method: A descriptive design was adopted in the study. The researchers made use of a twopart self-made questionnaire guided by the wealth of literature in the field: part 1 deals with the
respondents‟ robotfoto, while part 2 focuses on the perceived musculoskeletal effects of wearing
high-heeled shoes. The measure underwent construct and content validity before it yielded a
commendable Chronbach‟s reliability score of 0.89. Descriptive and test for significance
statistics were employed post data gathering to essentiate the goals of the research.
Results: Interesting results revealed that the subjects reported „having prominent leg muscles‟
as the most common musculoskeletal effect (30.77%) of wearing high heeled shoes. The
participants considered „inflammation of the foot region‟ as the least noticeable (6.87%).
Accidents related to the behavior include ankle sprain (62.67%) being the highest, while knee
injury as the lowest (10.67%). Using the chi- square test, a significant difference was discovered
(15.33, 3.84) among the two groups of respondents There is also significant difference as to
accidents experienced by the respondents (11.78, 3.84) resulting to the rejection of the null
hypothesis.
Conclusions: The two sets of subjects reported diversified concerns on the perceived effects
of wearing high-heeled shoes. The junior students perceived more musculoskeletal difficulties
than their younger counterparts. Future researchers shall focus on controlled clinical experiment
to confirm the perceived effects and to fully understand the measureable musculoskeletal
impact of attire-related lifestyle.

Moro Lorenzo Sports Clinic, Ateneo de Manila University
Background and Purpose: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a commonly used
clinical intervention for the treatment of swelling, but faradism under pressure (FUP) has also
become common in more clinics due to its availability and low cost. The purpose of this study is
to expound a previous study that compared the effectiveness of faradism under pressure (FUP)
and intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) in the treatment of knee swelling post-anterior
cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
Method
An assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial study design was utilized. Nine participants
aged 18-25 who underwent ACL reconstruction and presented with postoperative swelling were
recruited from Moro Lorenzo Sports Clinic and randomly assigned to the experimental group:
FUP (n=5) and the control group: IPC (n=4). Treatment was given for 5 consecutive days with
pre-tests and post-tests taken each day. Outcome measures utilized were visual analog scale
(VAS), range of motion (ROM), and limb girth measurement. Repeated measures ANOVA was
used to compare outcomes within groups measured over five days of the study while unpaired ttest was used to compare outcomes between groups.
Results: Both groups showed improvements in pain (FUP=2.03 2.05, IPC=1.61 3.1), knee
flexion (FUP=59 24.7, IPC=41.5 31.26), limb girth measurements above the medial tibial
plateau (MTP) (FUP=3.08 2.64, IPC=2.325 2.10), at the MTP (FUP=2.18 2, IPC=1.28 1.25),
and below the MTP (FUP=1.74 1.89, IPC=1.25 1.57) after 5 days of treatment. However, only
the change in limb girth measurements above the MTP for those who received IPC showed
statistical significance. There was no statistically significant difference found between FUP and
IPC for all outcome measures.
Conclusions: FUP and IPC seem to provide similar results in terms of improving pain, knee
ROM, and swelling for patients who underwent ACL reconstruction. However, further studies
may need to be done utilizing a larger sample size in order to determine whether there is indeed
a difference between these two interventions.

Background and Purpose: “Cha-cha-cha”, a category of ballroom dancing, is one of the most
preferred forms of exercise among the elderly. “Cha-cha-cha” requires foot works, hand
gestures, postural control, flexibility and coordination. This study explored beneficial effects of
dancing Cha-cha-cha specifically in improving balance among the elderly.
Method: This is an experimental single group pre-test-post-test design. Purposive sampling
was used to recruit participants. Participants aged 60-75 years old performed the dance
therapy Cha-cha-cha for 30 minutes without breaks, 5 times a week for 3 weeks. Compliance
was determined through close monitoring of participants. Balance assessment was done using
the Berg Balance Scale and differences between baseline and post-intervention were
determined using paired sample T-test.
Results: There were fifteen (15) participants, 53% female and 47% male. The mean balance
score at baseline was 43.471.68while post-intervention was 50.601.42. The increase in
balance scores was found to be statistically significant (p-value=0.000).
Conclusion: The dance therapy Cha-cha-cha may improve balance and decrease the tendency
of falls among elderly. Though there is a need to do further studies to compare Cha-cha-cha
with other exercise interventions for improving balance, this activity may be used by physical
therapists to provide a potentially more enjoyable experience for the elderly and time saving
intervention to patients with balance problems, while achieving intended outcomes.

College of Physical Therapy, Our Lady of Fatima University, Valenzuela City
Background & Purpose: To achieve the goal of community-based rehabilitation program, an
identification of the adopted community residents‟ activity limitations and participation
restrictions must first be established. This study aims to determine the disability profile of the
residents of BAI-Maresas.
Method: This is a descriptive study. A random sample was obtained among the residents of
BAI-Maresas. A survey using the World Health Organization‟s Disability Question Set was
administered by ten 4th year physical therapy students whose reliability was determined in a
pilot testing, yielding an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) ranging from 0.80 to .90.
Results: One hundred sixteen residents consented to participate in the survey. Sixty-five
percent (65%) of the residents are females and 9.6% are proxy respondents (closest kin of the
respondent, of legal age, and able to comprehend the Filipino language). Most of the residents
are high school graduates (29.6%), married (53.9%), self-employed (27.8%), and with a weekly
household income of Php 500.00 to 875.00. Most residents reported having hypertension/heart
disease (24%), asthma & respiratory problems (13%), and arthritis (12%) as co-morbid
conditions. Their level of difficulty ranged from no difficulty to mild difficulty, mostly noted in
cognition (36%), vision (33%), and mobility (25%). They sometimes need assistance and
reported experiencing fatigue, symptoms of anxiety and depression once a week. They rated
their participation restriction as either not affected or not applicable. If affected, however,
household chores, community activities, & leisure participation restriction were attributed to
mobility problems, pain, or fatigue.
Conclusions: Given the identified needs of residents of BAI-Maresas, both rehabilitative and
preventive programs must be provided, focusing on both physical and psychological health.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patient/client satisfaction is increasingly used to monitor
patient perceptions of the quality of health care services. The variety of tools used suggests that
survey instruments should be matched with the health care service being evaluated. Physical
therapy has several characteristics that may influence patient satisfaction. Therefore, a suitable
patient/client satisfaction questionnaire for physical therapy must be utilized. This study is
intended to describe the factors affecting perceived outpatient satisfaction with rehabilitation
services in the Philippine setting.
METHODS: One hundred respondents from selected EAC affiliated centers participated in this
study. Convenience sampling was used to identify outpatient clients only. A questionnaire was
developed consisting of items that require respondents to rate the qualities of their physical
therapist, quality of physical therapy treatment provided, hospital facility, rehabilitation center
equipment and cost of services. The perceived satisfaction ratings were limited only to services
provided by PT interns and PT staff-in-charge. The questionnaire underwent expert‟s review
and pilot test before implementation. Descriptive analysis was used.
RESULTS: The study revealed the characteristics of the physical therapist, including their
personality, punctuality, and effectiveness as to giving clear instructions, providing answers to
queries and quality of service, highly influence outpatient client satisfaction. Similarly, the
quality of physical therapy treatment, including its effectiveness, relevance of home instructions,
and capacity to respond to patients‟ needs were considered important. Accessibility of the
hospital facility, well-maintained rehabilitation center equipment, and cost of services, likewise
contribute to outpatient client satisfaction.
CONCLUSIONS: Effective physical therapists, cost-effective physical therapy programs, and
accessibility and adequacy of facilities and equipment lead to better outpatient client
satisfaction. Efforts to ensure the presence of these factors may increase utilization of physical
therapy services by the public.

Background and Purpose: Cerebral palsy is one of the most common pediatric disorders
encountered by physical therapists. Parents of children with cerebral palsy can be effective
collaborators in pediatric rehabilitation, depending on their perceptions of the value of the
therapeutic interventions provided to their children. Hence, this study investigated perceived
parental responses regarding physical therapy services provided to children with cerebral palsy
in Davao City.
Method: This is a quantitative survey-descriptive research utilizing purposive sampling. Thirteen
(13) parents of children with cerebral palsy participated in the study. From the related literature,
a survey form about the internal and external factors that influence parental responses towards
physical therapy services provided to children with cerebral palsy was developed and validated.
The Likert-type questionnaire consists of 50 questions, divided into 2 areas (internal and
external) of 5 categories each. Mean scores for each category was obtained.
Results: Internal factors pertain to parents‟ emotional and mental perceptions that influence
them to send their child to physical therapy, and included, guilt and shame, beneficence and
autonomy, self-concept, current emotional status and pessimism. On the other hand, external
factors pertain to current issues parents face in sending their children to physical therapy
services, which included satisfaction of parents with the services received by their child, cost
and value, support system, roles of parent/s to other family member/s and socioeconomic status
of the family. Most of the respondents were satisfied with the physical therapy services given to
their child but their expectations regarding the improvement of their child‟s condition were not
yet reached.
Conclusion: Physical therapists need to be aware of the varied underlying perceived parental
responses regarding physical therapy services provided to children with cerebral palsy. Such
awareness can help physical therapists establish good PT-parents relationship and engage
parents as collaborators in their child‟s treatment program toward improved motor function.

Background and Purpose: Republic Act 344, otherwise known as The Philippine Accessibility
Law, is an Act to enhance the mobility of disabled persons by requiring certain buildings,
institutions, establishments, and public utilities, to install facilities and other devices. Food
establishments are one of, if not the most, frequently visited public buildings, even by people
with disabilities (PWD). However, the degree of compliance of these facilities to RA 344 has not
been well-documented. This study aims to determine the compliance of selected food
establishments with RA 344.
Method: This is a descriptive type of research. Three food establishments compliant with
permit to operate and certificate of building occupancy issued by City Mayor‟s Office were
recruited for this study. A checklist instrument was developed, patterned after R.A.344 and its
Amended Implementing Rules and Regulations. Compliance of facilities, including walkways,
corridors, entrances, doors, washrooms or toilets, ramps, larking areas, switches, handrails and
threshold, were evaluated by a team of 5 evaluators per establishment. Facilities were
classified as compliant (complied with all the requirements), partial compliant (complied with
some of the requirements or provided modifications to existing requirements), and noncompliant (did not comply with any of the requirements).
Results: Two out of three food establishments were found compliant with RA 344. Walkways,
washrooms, toilets, ramps, parking areas and handrails were present but partially compliant
with RA 344. On the other hand, corridors, entrances, doors, switches and threshold were found
compliant with existing standards.
Conclusions: This study found variability in the compliance of selected food establishments
with the Philippine Accessibility Law. Non-compliance with existing standards may limit
accessibility of these establishments to people with disabilities (PWDs), thereby potentially
depriving them of an opportunity to be integrated into society.
