A quick apology!
Apologies to Jo Brown who's name we got wrong in the winter edition of
Glossop life in the Glossop Rugby Club feature – we said that two players
had represented England Under 20s in 2013 and it was Jo Brown and
Rebecca Scholes. A fantastic achievement!

MR & M
Weddings sometimes get a bad press for being
a headache to organise and causing many an
argument but it really doesn’t have to be that
way. With a bit of imagination it is possible to
keep costs down and stress under wraps without
compromising on fabulousness. With five couples
in the Glossop Life office who are all getting
married either this year or next (not to each
other!), we picked their brains to find out what
their top tips are for stress-free wedding planning.
Have fun
Sit down together with a glass of wine (or similar) and
brainstorm things that do and don’t appeal to you. By the end
you should have a clear idea of what you want (and what you
don’t), and how much you want to spend.
DIY
Keep costs manageable by doing some things yourself.
Choose things that you (or your talented friends and family)
are good at and enjoy doing. Things like making the cake,
designing invites or sourcing wedding favours.
Spa
If you’re not having a honeymoon or are delaying it for a while,
consider booking the pair of you into a luxurious, relaxing spa
the day after your wedding. After the excitement and adrenalin
of the day, you’ll really appreciate some relaxing time together.
Vintage vogue
Vintage themes are hot at the moment, adding style without
expense. Have fun hunting through the clothes and bric-abrac of local charity shops and independent retailers. Preowned and pre-loved items could lend real charm to your
special day.
The venue
Don’t assume the one you want is available – unusual
venues get booked years in advance. Think about how it’ll
work if you don’t get the weather you want. If possible, go
to an event at the venue so you can see first hand how it
works. How professional are the staff? How clean is it? How
good is the service? It’s a good excuse for a fun night out
together – so you can remember why you’re getting married
in the first place!
Outside catering
If your venue allows it, a good way to keep costs down is to
use an outside catering firm. You’re likely to have more of a
say in your menu too. The High Peak has a number of well
regarded and highly professional outside catering services to
choose from.

Wedding fairs
Increasingly popular, the wedding fair has the great
advantage of having everything from photographers to
jewellers, cars to entertainers, all in one place so you’ll save
time and come away with lots of great ideas. Plus, you get to
sample lots and lots of cake!
Stationery
A good stationery shop
will stock affordable
template cards – grab
some glue and sparkle
and get creative.
The ‘selfie’ table
Don’t fork out on an
expensive photo booth
– set up a table with
fancy dress props and
disposable cameras.

Shop local
You’d be surprised what’s available on the high street and by
shopping local, you’ll not only receive a more personal service,
it’ll be easier to pop in and see how things are going.
Pinterest
Pinterest is a great place to get ideas – especially colour
schemes and templates for invites, orders of service and place
settings. It’s also a great source of cheap, unique and easy to
replicate wedding ideas.
Word of mouth
Personal recommendations from friends and family are your
most valuable tool because they take away the element of the
unknown and come from a trusted source.
Wedding poems
A good alternative to a wedding list, the wedding poem invites
guests to contribute money to something you really want –
often a honeymoon.

• The bridegroom stands to the right of the bride
during a Christian ceremony because in past times
he needed his right hand to fight off other suitors.
• The 1753 Marriage Act made it illegal to marry
outside a church in England but it didn’t apply
to Scotland – hence the rise of Gretna Green.
• In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside
newlyweds’ homes as a symbol of fertility and luck.
• In many cultures, the hands of the bride
and groom are literally tied together as a
demonstration of their commitment to each
other, hence the phrase ‘tying the knot’.

June 2014 will see the much anticipated UK launch of
Yumbox. Already a huge hit in the US, Australia and
New Zealand this, bento-style, kids lunch box helps
educate kids (and parents!) on how to pack a balanced
and nutritious lunch.
Yumbox is available in Framboise Pink or Pomme Green
and can be purchased through Amazon, or direct from
www.yumbox-uk.co.uk from mid-June.
The removable tray indicates the quantities of the five food
groups which should be packed and the leakproof design
ensures that dips and yogurts can be easily included without
the risk of spilling.
• BALANCE & PORTION CONTROL - Yumbox’s preportioned, illustrated tray guides you to pack a healthy and
hassle-free lunch. The tray is divided into five half-cup portions
of the key food groups: Fruit, Vegetable, Grains, Protein, Dairy.
Plus a small well for a dip or a treat
Yumbox is sturdy and dishwasherproof but practicality doesn’t
come at the expense of style. Yumbox won the prestigious
GOOD DESIGN® award (Children’s Category) in 2013 for its
sleek and innovative design.
8 • Glossop Life
Why buy a Yumbox?
• LEAKPROOF SINGLE LID - Pack yogurt next to
breadsticks. Yumbox's unique single lid seals all food
compartments individually. Food won’t touch or leak outside of
the box. No plastic bags! No clingfilm! No lost lids! No mess!

• KID FRIENDLY - Yumbox is sturdy and compact with
an easy-open latch. It fits neatly into standard size thermal
lunch bags. Fully filled it offers a nutritional balanced meal
for a child between the ages of 3 and 8. It is also great for
toddler meals as well as snacks for older children
• THINK GREEN - Reuse, Reduce and Save! Yumbox
saves you money by eliminating the need for plastic bags,
multiple containers, cling film and snack packs. Pack a
waste free lunch. All materials used in production are food
safe, BPA-free and phthalates-free
• EDUCATIONAL AND FUN - Turn your child’s meals into
a food adventure. Offering a healthy variety of foods and
teaching your child about portion size and different food
groups will instil good eating habits the fun way!
• PRACTICAL AND FUN TO EAT - Pack Yumbox for all
meals on-the-go - school lunch, picnics, travel and snacks
(maybe even pack yourself one
too – they are great for portion
controlled diets). When you
get home simply place the
tray in the dishwasher and you
are ready for another adventure

1. Clear out
Having a clear out is quite therapeutic, so open
those windows, open those cupboards and
start de cluttering. Be warned however, once
you start it can take time because before you
know it you will start going through cupboards
and reminiscing about things. But be firm. If you
don’t need it, haven’t used it for years, why are
you hanging on to it? Books and paperwork piled
everywhere, toys under foot, and shoes piled
high in the hallway, can all make a home look
tatty and unloved – clear it out and you’ll notice
the difference straight away. You might make a
bit of money at a car boot or on Ebay too!
2. Choose a theme
Giving each room in the house a theme can
really help to give it some style. This doesn’t
need to cost a fortune, simply match up the
colour scheme of your cushions with a rug or a
modern piece of wall art and you will be well on
your way. But be careful not to go too far with
this idea otherwise your rooms will start to look
contrived, less is more sometimes, but have
a theme in mind and start to introduce one or
two key pieces or colours and you’ll notice the
difference.

3. Deep cleaning
Our homes get cleaned weekly but how
often do we pull out the furniture and
really deep clean a room? Get into those
nooks and crannies, clean all those
skirting boards behind furniture and
bring down cobwebs that have built up.
Do a room at a time and the house will
soon be sparkling and you’ll be fitter too!
6. Don’t forget outside
Now is the time to start clearing up the
damage in your garden from the high
winds and rain of winter. Turn over the
borders, put in new bulbs and plants for
the season, cut lawns and bring out the
garden furniture, maybe even the BBQ,
weather permitting!
9. Curtains and carpets
Open windows to ventilate rooms and
wash or dry clean curtains that have
been there for years – you’ll be amazed
how much dust and dirt accumulates in
fabric. Hire an industrial carpet cleaner
to really get the dirt out of your carpets.
If you haven’t got the time, get a
professional in to do it for you.
4. New knobs and handles
Can’t afford a new kitchen? Sometimes
the smallest changes can transform a
look, such as replacing old fashioned
door knobs and handles with modern
ones. Go one step further and replace
the doors and it’ll be like a new kitchen
but for a fraction of the price.
7. Get rid of grotty grout
Mouldy or dirty looking grout can make
your bathroom or kitchen tiles look really
unattractive. There are plenty of cleaning
agents now that can deal with mould
and it just needs a bit of elbow grease. If
it’s too far gone then you might be better
off having the tiles re-grouted. To stop it
coming back make sure you keep these
rooms well ventilated.
10. A lick of paint
There is nothing better than a lick of
paint to really brighten up a room and
have it looking brand new. Paint doesn’t
cost a lot of money and there are so
many colours to choose
from, you can
really make a
statement.
5. Cover up
There are many fantastic throws out in
the shops right now that can brighten
up a room and cover up any old tatty
looking sofas and chairs. And if your
table is looking more shabby, than
shabby chic, cover it up with a stylish
table cloth and no one will even know!
www.glossoplife.co.uk
8. Get the mood right
The right lighting can change the mood
of a room dramatically. It could be as
simple as replacing the light fitting or
putting a lamp on a table to add a softer
ambience, particularly in a lounge.

Glossoplife Food & Drink
A recent council led initiative to encourage local
businesses to work together has helped forge new
relationships amongst High Peak traders.
The Peak District Trade Fair saw over 40 exhibitors from within
the food, drink, arts and craft sector display their wares at
Buxton’s Devonshire Dome. Representatives from over 80
local hotels, restaurants and gift shops came to discover a
wealth of independent companies in a bid to galvanise local
trade and build a strong, local economy.
Fostering these relationships is hugely beneficial to local
communities. Local producers rely heavily on independent
retailers to stock their produce, so it stands to reason that
the fewer independent stores there are, the bigger an impact
it has on them. Considering that local companies put an
average of three times more revenue back into the local
economy than their larger chain store counterparts, there’s
every reason to be supporting them.
Independent shops hire a range of local tradesmen compared
to chains - architects, shop fitters and sign writers can all
benefit, and there are opportunities for other local businesses
such as accountants and IT companies too. Independents
also provide much needed product diversity. Chains
typically stock produce from larger manufactures, whereas
independents house a range of locally sourced goods.
Furthermore, communities with an abundance of independent
stores generate an exclusive consumer experience which, in
turn, supplements tourism revenue. You’re much more likely
to visit a shop or restaurant that you don’t have in your home
town, than one you can visit any old time.
The Peak District Trade Fair has already seen some positive
results. Within the first week, approximately half of the
exhibitors had received orders from businesses they’d
met. Glossop-based Noel Bateman who owns Firefly BBQ
exhibited for the first time.
Selling a selection of artisan rubs and sauces for meat, the
Trade Fair gave him the chance to meet local butchers, cafe
owners and restauranteurs. Hopefully you will see his products
on a local shop shelf soon.

Glossoplife My Glossop
Peter Jozefczyk truly is Glossop through and through. Having grown up here, he now works at
Glossopdale Community College and has volunteered with Glossop Mountain Rescue team for
21 years. He spoke to us about rescuing, being on TV and his love for aviation.
Have you always lived in Glossop?
Yeah, I'm Glossop born and bred. My
mum was from the area but my dad was
originally from Poland. My dad was living
in a hostel for refugees, and my mum
met him in the town. My dad came to
Glossop having been a Prisoner of War
and came here from Siberia, via a couple
of years in India.
How did you get involved with GMRT?
I'd been wandering the hills for many
years as a young lad and I got involved
with the Glossop Aircraft Archeology
Society. Curiosity for that led me into the
hills and when I saw an advertisement
in the Glossop Chronicle for the team,
I thought it would be good to put
something back into the community.
How were you involved with the
story of the B29 bomber which
crashed on the hills above Glossop?
Being a member of the Aircraft
Archeology society meant that I was
there when a gentlemen walked into
Glossop Heritage Centre and said that
as a young lad, him and his friends had
been up in the hills and found a gun
turret from the bomber and then hid it.
I spent a few days looking for it with
some of the mountain rescue team and
when it was found it went on display in
the Heritage Centre. It is now at the RAF
www.glossoplife.co.uk
Museum in Newark, which is near to
where it took off before it crashed.
I still, to this day, keep in touch with
the pilot's daughter in America and she
comes over for the anniversary year
memorials.
A lot of the public houses have gone
but I think the High Street is definitely
improving. There are businesses on
there with good community links. It's
certainly on the up, particularly over
these last two years.
Was it this that led to two TV
appearances?
Yes, a couple of years ago I did a feature
on Countryfile about aircraft crashes in
the Peak District. I also did a piece on
Granada, last year, where the reporter
Adam Maclean did a piece on his
favourite walk. He chose the walk up to
the site of the B29 and the emphasis of
that was not just on the walk but also to
give some advice on keeping safe in the
hills.
I've also noticed a lot more diversity,
with people moving in from outside the
area and for local businesses, this must
mean that the area is doing well.
How did your interest in aviation
start?
As a young lad I got into general
aviation, I was an air cadet in my teens
and it led on from there. I also had a
relative who worked at Woodford for
British Aerospace where they built the
Lancasters during the war, so he gave
me an insight into it all.
What are the main changes you've
seen in Glossop?
In the last few years, things like the
Howard Town development and the High
Street have seen really big changes.
How do you spend your leisure time
in Glossop?
I'm quite into geocaching, where you
try and find the caches which have
been set up, and I do that with the
kids. We've actually set up loads, most
of which are in circuits around the
reservoirs. It's a great way to get out
and discover places that you wouldn't
normally find yourself going to.

Once instruments of the Industrial Revolution,
they are now leafy corridors for getting from one
town to another.
The Peak Forest Canal is in two distinct sections; the upper
section running alongside the River Goyt is one of the highest
summits in the country and the lower along that of the River
Tame. It is a hidden gem and can offer an experience of life
at a gentler, long-forgotten pace or something a bit more
adventurous. For much of its length it runs in parallel to the
River Goyt and passes Goytside Meadows where passers-by
can experience a stunning variety of wild flowers.
HISTORY
The Peak Forest Canal was originally built to transport
limestone from the quarries at Lodes Knowle and Dove Holes,
as well as coal, cotton, grain and manufactured goods to
Manchester, the North West and Midlands. Work on the canal
began in earnest in May 1974 and was overseen by engineer
Benjamin Outram who was also responsible for the Ashton,
Derby and Huddersfield canals, and Thomas Brown who 30
years later would be resident engineer of the Macclesfield
Canal. It opened in 1800 and by the end of the 19th century
was handling over 600 tons of limestone per day. Canals were
built, as far as possible, with local materials and were ‘cut’ by
men using picks, shovels and wheelbarrows. Skilled diggers
were called cutters or bankers, the unskilled were known as
navigators or ‘navvies’. Once dug, the canal would be lined
or ‘puddled’ with clay to make it watertight – roughly 3 feet of
‘puddle’ on the sides and eighteen inches on the bottom.
THE BOATS
It’s the boats that make the canals so special. With a vibrant
community and boats of all colours and sizes, they’re
absolutely fascinating, and with a speed limit of no more than
4 miles per hour, road rage becomes a distant memory.
Hire one for yourself or join an organised excursion.

THINGS TO DO
Bugsworth Basin, the terminus of the Peak Forest Canal was
originally intended to link with Chapel Milton where it would
interlink with the Peak Forest tramway but it was eventually
decided that because of the gradient involved it was cheaper
and easier to bring the tramway to Bugsworth. Closed in
2007, by the 1960s it was dry and overgrown until in 1968
work began by the volunteers of the Inland Waterways
Protection Society to bring it back to life. A process that was
only finally completed in 2005.
The approach to Bugsworth Basin takes in Teapot Row – so
named because allegedly its residents used to empty their
teapots into the canal. Visit The Navigation Inn for some
welcome refreshments and a hearty meal before continuing on
your journey.
W3 is Whaley Bridge’s unique Water Weekend, which takes
place on Friday 6th to Sunday 8th June, 2014 in and around
Bugsworth Basin. It includes free boat trips, music from
Rogers Floyd (a Pink Floyd tribute band), dancing, craft
stalls, food (including the infamous Whaleyburger), drink
and much merriment. This year is the 15th anniversary of
this much loved event. For more information, please see
whaleywaterweekend.co.uk
Portland Basin Museum. Ashton-under-Lyne’s Portland
Basin Museum offers a friendly and fun place for families
to enjoy. Housed in a warehouse at the junction of three
canals, the museum is free to enter. Visitors can learn
about Tameside’s industrial history, try butter churning and
experience life in the 1920s - take a walk down a cobbled
street with its old-fashioned houses, grocer’s shop, school
room and pub.
WILDLIFE
The canal is home to a myriad of wildlife, hedgerow plants
(including hawthorn, blackthorn, elder, dog rose and wild
honeysuckle) and birds (Canadian geese, coot, cormorant,
herons, kingfishers, moorhens and reed warblers). Enthusiasts
can take part in the Canal & River Trust’s Great Nature Watch
by downloading their app to their mobile phones.

Navigat ion Skills
Glossop Navigation Skills teaches safety to
those taking to the hills, moors, fells and dales.
Effective navigation is not all about knowing exactly where you are at
a given moment, for that involves having your head buried in a map
for much of the route. It’s about having a good range of skills and
the confidence to find where you are, when you need to know, then
steering a course to where you want to be as safely as possible.
At Glossop Navigation Skills we allow learning in sensible stages as we
teach the golden rules of navigation and the ability to select and deploy
the correct skills at the right moment.

ASK THE IT EXPERT
Your local
Business
IT company
Glossop working mum’s
and ladies networking group
Davis Blank Furniss started to run a working mum’s
group last year and such was the success they are now
extending it to all women in business. The aim of the group
is to provide a forum for local working women to build
relationships and contacts amongst themselves to help
support and progress their business.
Dear Nathan
Please help. I’ve heard that Microsoft is no longer
supporting Windows XP and that I’m now open to
viruses? What do I do, do I need a new computer?
This has been one of the most burning questions
we’ve been asked since Microsoft announced that
Support for Windows XP would end on April 8, 2014.
My first response is when was the last time you called
Microsoft for support? Never, right! So what does
their announcement actually mean to all of us?
It means that they will not be providing software
updates for Windows XP anymore which includes
security updates. You can still continue to use your
computer and nothing will have changed but if you
are connected to the Internet you may be exposing
your PC to threats so it is important you remain safe by
regularly scanning your PC for viruses.
You do not need to replace your PC, nor do you
need to replace your operating system but we would
advise that you look at your security to protect against
viruses.
Complink UK can provide you with advice and ad
hoc support including scans for your PC and virus
removals, but we also provide regular support that
includes remote access for home and business users
for a small on-going fee.
So, if you’ve got Windows XP, firstly don’t panic, and
secondly make sure you have adequate security
coverage but if in any doubt, give us a call and I’m
sure we will be able to help.
Each session will consist of an informal meet and greet – a
chance to introduce yourself and your business and to let
everyone know what you are looking for from the group.
Perhaps you need help with your website, or are looking
for some advice regarding Search Engine Optimisation?
Hopefully there will be a fellow attendee who can help.
There will also be a short business focused presentation
followed by a business card prize-draw. The cost is just £5
payable on the door and includes refreshments. The events
will be held quarterly and the next dates are:
Thurs 26th June
Thurs 25th Sept
Thurs 18th Dec

If, like us, the Budget only seems relevant to you if the price of petrol goes up, you've probably not paid
much attention to the new tax year that started on the 6th April. Unless you're an expert, the world of
financial planning can seem as overwhelming as it is uninteresting - which is odd when you consider
that financial security is so closely linked with personal happiness.
We worry that seeking professional
advice will be expensive and timeconsuming but the recession has
proved - if nothing else - that ignorance
is certainly not bliss when it comes to
managing money. So we asked Steve
Page, Partner and Financial Planner at
Puleston Wealth Management what we
should be thinking about at the moment.
He says:
"With the state pension contracting
and life expectancy increasing,
retirement planning is really
important right now, especially since
the budget raised new legislation
allowing you access to ALL of your
pension funds from age 55 from the
2015/16 tax year. This removes the
need to buy an annuity in times of
falling annuity rates and gives a
greater degree of control over your
money into retirement. What's
more, you'll be able to claim tax
relief on contributions you make
to your pension fund. In terms of
general savings, interest rates are
still low so using the increased ISA
contribution level of £11,880 per
person (rising to £15,000 per person
in July of this year) could work for
many people."
We're all tightening our belts in other
areas, from shopping at different
supermarkets to switching energy
providers, so why shouldn't we be
grabbing the financial bull by the horns?

Glossoplife
Dinting Cricket Club has joined a scheme
called ‘Chance to Shine’ backed by the Derbyshire
Cricket Board, believing that its future lies in the
younger generation.
Coaching will be open to both girls and boys from any school
within the area.
The focus of ‘Chance to Shine’ is to get local children in the
community interested in cricket whether that’s in their school
or at the club. Sessions will initially take place at Dinting C of E
Primary School in Simmondley and Gamesley Primary School.
Once the cricket season starts, the sessions will move to
Dinting Cricket Club and will be run on a weekday evening.
Daniel Carter, a Dinting Cricket Club representative says, “We
feel this is a tremendous opportunity for children who want
to find out more about cricket but maybe have never played
before. We have produced some quality players in the past
and right now we have a girl and a boy playing in Derbyshire
Junior Teams.”
Dinting Cricket Club consists of men’s 1st and 2nd teams;
under 17s; under 15s; under 13s and under 11s. Both men’s
teams have been very successfully recently with the first team
winning the Derbyshire and Cheshire league 3 years running.
The soccer school is open to boys and girls
age 4-12yrs who play in three different
age/ability groups. Sessions led by Dave
Symons, a UEFA B qualified coach.
No need to book just turn up and play.
The cost is just £4 per week. Please
bring trainers/boots (not studs),
shin pads, light snack, drink and
suitable clothing.
“We appreciate that without the new generation
coming through, then the winning could well be short
lived, hence the investment in the club’s future. As
well as looking for youngsters to get involved, the club
is also looking for new sponsors for their junior teams
and the men’s team. We lost one of our main sponsors
recently and getting new ones is crucial so as not to
jeapordise the future of the project.”

Danny at Car Care Centre is 50
this year and he’s dedicated the
last 30 of those to building up his
Padfield-based business, providing
employment to local people and
offering customers a professional
service no matter how big the job.
One of the reasons the Car Care Centre
has stood the test of time is the range
of services it provides including servicing
and MOTs, repairs and bodywork, tyre
replacement and breakdown services.
They really help their customers out by
providing courtesy cars and doing local
pickups and deliveries to save time and
hassle.
So with more and more people planning
short breaks and holidays in the UK, who
better to ask for some advice on how to
get to your destination safe and sound?
Danny says:
“Road trips are great but if your vehicle
lets you down it can be a nightmare. A
little preventative maintenance can go
a long way in ensuring you arrive safe,
sound and sane!”
PRE-TRIP CHECKS
THINGS TO TAKE
Tyres - check the pressure and tread for
splits and bulges. For full loads you’ll need
to increase your tyre pressures; refer to
your user manual for tyre pressures.
Oil - is critical to your engine’s ability to
function so change it regularly.
Hoses and Belts - check for cracks,
leaks and loose connections.
Wipers - give them a clean and make
sure you’ve topped up on water to clean
away dust, dirt and insects.
Coolant - have your radiator flushed or at
least check you have the right amount and
mix of coolant before you set off.
Battery - check connections are clean
and tight and free from corrosion. Battery
problems are the number one cause of
breakdowns.
Air Conditioning - check it’s working
efficiently to ensure a comfortable journey.
Get it serviced - Getting your car
serviced regularly helps get the best out
of it. Well maintained vehicles are more
fuel efficient too. Arrange for your service
a couple of weeks before your trip to give
you time to get any repairs completed.
Motor spares: Don’t end up stranded for
want of a spare fuse or bulb.
Keys: There’s nothing worse than losing
your key (or worse locking it in your car)
when you’re away from home so if you
have a spare take it with you.
Drinks: Make sure you have plenty of
drinks within reach in the car especially
if you’re travelling with babies, young
children or the elderly.
Things to do: traffic jams can be painful if
your passengers are bored so arm yourself
with games they can play safely while you
concentrate on the road.
Fully charged phone: don’t wait until
you’ve broken down on the side of the
road to discover you have no battery.

Support Our Soldiers
Glossoplife
In November 2013 I contacted the charity
‘Support Our Soldiers’ for more details on how to send a
parcel to a serving soldier that wouldn’t be home for Christmas. Christopher Dronsfield,
the Area Co-ordinator for Support Our Soldiers got in touch straight away to explain what
could and couldn’t be sent, the restricted parcel weight and the deadline date. Although
I’d missed the deadline for Christmas I vowed to send a parcel.
Having mentioned to family and friends what I planned to do they all asked
if they could join in, this gave me an idea. I have often fund raised by doing
the Great Manchester Run, the Cancer Research 26.2 mile Shine walk and
organised a collection of items for the Sri Lankan Tsunami appeal. My local
community supported me in all my fundraising especially the collection for the
Tsunami appeal. I decided to ask for their support again with a mass collection
for Support Our Soldiers.
I had the support of area co-ordinator, Christopher Dronsfield, and quickly
began using facebook to advertise to my local community - and they didn’t
let me down! I decided I needed a central location where people could come
come to me and donate I was offered a stall for a day on Glossop Market
completely free of charge, I was totally blown away by the donations we
received. That evening, with the help from my husband Martin we managed
to make up 57 care parcels to be sent to Afghanistan for Christmas, seven of
which were for the dog unit. I had managed to get shoe boxes made for free at
Manchester Paper Box in Openshaw. They were filled with sweets, chocolates,
puzzle books, nuts, toiletries and lots more!
The next day Christopher came to collect the parcels from my home, and
promised to keep in touch. A few days later I saw photos of the parcels all
wrapped and marked up ready to go on their way. A while later I recieved an
email from Christopher to say how grateful they were for my support and to ask
if I would consider officially joining SOS as his assistant co-ordinator to cover
the Tameside & Glossop area. I was shocked and amazed by the opportunity
and decided to continue to put my fundraising efforts into Support Our Soldiers
and I accepted the offer.

Glossoplife Support Our Soldiers
Since joining the charity I have now set
up a new profile on facebook “Louise
SO S” where I’m already receiving a
lot of support and feedback from the
general public and local businesses.
I have managed to put together a
Summer Craft Fair at Glossop Cricket
Club on Sunday 20th July (12-4pm),
I have an extensive list of supporters
who want to put care parcels together
throughout the year, I have started
a ‘Team SOS’ for this years Great
Manchester Run on the 18th
May which people are still more than
welcome to join. I have collection tins
in various local outlets so look out
for them. You may also have spotted
me outside Aldi in Glossop collecting
items and money for more items from
customers which all went into parcels,
we managed to make 24 parcels from
this and these will start their journey to
Afghanistan on the 12th of April 2014
and I’m hopefully going to have a spot
at the next local produce market in
Glossop.
Recently a friend asked me “Are you
proud of what you do?”, to which
I responded “I am proud of the
community I live in”. I love to organise
and I love to keep myself busy doing
something I enjoy, it’s in my nature
and charity work is so rewarding, I love
every minute of it but most of all I love
to see the support we get from the local
community, I feel blessed to live in such
a lovely area and to have such good
support behind me from my family and
friends.
Support our Soldiers foundations are
built on the care parcels they send each
and every year, the charity was started
by two mums in 2003 who had sons
serving overseas. They understood
the importance of the parcels and the
morale boost it gives to the service men
and women overseas and decided to
make a difference. The charity became
registered in 2007 and continues to
grow today. I would love to grow SOS
around Glossop & Tameside and see our
window stickers in cars all over the local
area and at 50p each I hope this will be
sooner rather than later!
Louise Dyson
If people would like to get involved you can buy merchandise, join Team SOS on the

On May Day 2010, after a long period of closure and some hard
work by a dedicated team of local supporters, Hadfield Hall (the imposing building at the junction of Railway
Street and Station Road that houses Hadfield Library) re-opened its doors to the local community, offering two
rooms that can be booked for a diverse range of local activities. Slowly but surely interest increased in the large
hall over the library and the smaller community room downstairs, and now with a busy schedule of week-day
and weekend bookings in both Community Rooms, Friends of Hadfield
Hall have not looked back.
Over the last year, thanks to council
funding and assistance, a full
programme of refurbishment has been
carried out to both rooms. Old floors
have been carefully cleaned and repolished, modern kitchen areas have
been created and installed, and all the
lighting and electrical wiring has been
replaced. Most recently both rooms
have been fitted with new curtains and
have also been redecorated, creating a
lighter and fresher environment for all the
users to enjoy.
Fund-raising is an important part of the
work of Friends of Hadfield Hall, and
regular events take place. The early
coffee mornings and table-top sales
have been replaced by popular craft
fairs held in the spring and late autumn.
But the jewel in the crown at Hadfield
Hall is the annual Art Show, held in
June. Taking place for the fourth time
this year, it will run over the weekend of
June 21st and 22nd, with a preview
on the Friday evening. Artists from the
local community as well as from further
afield are invited to submit their work in a
number of categories and the response
www.glossoplife.co.uk
each year, so far, has been very positive,
with around 175 entries being judged
last year by local sculptor Brian Fell.
This year’s Art Show will be opened
and judged by Ghislaine and Michael
Howard, renowned local artists.
Thanks to an increased number of
sponsors this year, prizes will be
awarded in several categories:
Overall Best in Show (the judges’
choice), The People’s Favourite, a Local
Scene, a 3-D Prize (craft and mixedmedia work), a Prize for Photography,
and an Award for an artist under 21.
Artwork can include drawing, painting,
sculpture, ceramic, textile, digital and
photographic works, and artists may
enter up to three pieces of artwork –
there is no selection process (although
if there is not enough space to display
everything submitted, the organisers
reserve the right to hold back some
pieces). Sponsors this year include
Hadfield Dental Care, Glossop Cartons,
Wain’s Office Supplies & Art Materials,
Glossop Craft Centre, and High Peak
Borough Council.
Hadfield Art Show will be open
between 10am - 4pm on Saturday and
Sunday June 21 and 22. Entry is free.
The Community Room downstairs will
be open each day for drinks and light
refreshments.
On Sunday afternoon June 22 the wellknown young-people’s choir, “Rachael’s
Voices”, who were a hit at the Fringe
at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, will be
singing.
Art Show co-ordinator Annette
Hetherington said, “We’re very grateful
to our sponsors who are enabling us
to award more prizes this year. We’re
looking forward to welcoming everyone
to another successful Art Show in
Hadfield this June. We’re always excited
to read the feedback in our visitors’
book, which so far has been very
encouraging and helpful”.
If you’re interested in submitting a piece

Glossop Gardeners
Glossoplife
In 2009 friends Christina Harris and
Sue Astles thought about starting a
gardening club. They applied for
start-up funding from Derbyshire
Community Foundation, which took
care of room hire and speakers at
the first few meetings and gave
them the confidence they needed
to turn their idea into reality.
“Gardening had always brought us both
such joy initially we just wanted to create
a network for plantaholics like us – a
way to share our experiences with other
gardeners - but it’s just snowballed since
then.”
Five years later Glossop Gardeners is
thriving with more than 100 members
and an enviable social calendar.

PASSIONATE ABOUT PLANTS
At the heart of Glossop Gardeners is a
shared passion for growing things, being
in the fresh air and an appreciation of
the natural world. But the group is much
more than that, it provides a friendly
environment for members to improve
their knowledge and skills, meet people
and make a valuable contribution to the
local community.
Between September and May, they
meet every month at Glossop Cricket
Club (licensed bar available and
well used!) to catch up on all things
gardening and plan events. They have
an interesting and varied programme of
guest speakers covering everything from
advice on particular plants through to
beekeeping.

SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES
June through to August the group naturally gets outside to meet with regular evening
events and weekend trips. This April they’re visiting RHS Harlow Carr and the
Harrogate Flower Show, in June they’re off to Bodnant Flower Show and in August
it’s the Southport Flower Show.
When they’re not planting and pruning, the Glossop Gardeners are busy with a
packed schedule of other social and educational events including garden visits, quiz
nights, workshops and an annual photography competition. They even find time to
provide and maintain plants and planters to the Shire Hill Hospital and fundraise for a
number of charities.
SEASONAL ADVICE
OPEN GARDEN
So what should those of us who aren’t
(yet) members of Glossop Gardeners
be doing in the garden at this time of
year? Christina says that by May we
should have seen the last of the frost
so it’s a great time for clearing out the
greenhouse and getting seeds, annuals
and cuttings into the garden. She says:
For the 7th year in a row Peter &
Christina Harris are opening their
garden for charity from 12-5pm on
Sunday 22nd June. For an entrance
fee of just £2.50 visits their garden,
explore the Children’s Garden Trail
and browse the plant and craft stalls.
Christina says:
“We encourage as many people
as possible to come because it’s a
lovely way to while away an hour
or two and all the proceeds go
to the charities supported by the
National Garden Scheme.”
“If you’re feeling a bit adventurous
get to a plant fair as they’re great
places for finding unusual and
challenging plants you won’t see
in a garden centre or nursery.
Bramhall and Arley Halls both
have great plant fairs at this time
of year.”

PROVIDING A LIFELINE
High Peak Women's Aid has been
supporting families experiencing
domestic abuse for 35 years and
provides a range of community-based
services including a refuge for women
and children, community programmes
for girls and young women affected by
abuse, counselling, specialist services

service.
Isolation and low self-esteem are
common features of domestic

HOW YOU CAN HELP
FUNDING UNCERTAINTY
Fund-raising: do something
courageous or fun that people will put
their hand in their pocket for.
At a time when demand for help dealing
with domestic abuse is increasing,
funding for charitable organisations is
being squeezed and many are struggling
to maintain services. HPWA is among
those feeling the financial pressure and
this year it faces a £50,000 deficit in
funding which will have an impact on its
ability to provide this essential outreach
programme. Services Manager Pam
Whittle explains:
“We urgently need to raise funds to
be able to continue meeting the needs
of the women, men and children in
the community. We are a relatively
small charity and fundraising is vital
to ensure our sustainability but we
often find that time is taken up trying
to secure funds when we should be
engaged in more direct work for our
service users.”

loneliness and social isolation.
Over 700,000 people over 65 in the UK say they always or

Loneliness can be as harmful to a person’s health as smoking
15 cigarettes a day. Age UK’s Stepping In is for anyone who
is 55 years and over. They will work with each person on a
one to one basis, to provide support and information, as well
as helping to give access to local groups in the community
and activities that may be of interest. This will help to build
confidence and improve community connections.
The project will work with people for a time agreed period of

Music
Glossoplife
Twelve piece Ska outfit Jungle Lion have a reputation for producing enthusiastic fits of singing and dancing
from every audience they encounter. Ahead of their Glossop debut at The Globe, singer Dave Campbell spoke
to Glossop Life about festivals, their roots and trying to all fit on the stage.
How did your Glossop debut come about?
We played in Manchester a while ago and a fan asked us if there
was a chance we could come to Glossop. The venues are smaller
than we normally play, but people tell me it’s going to be great! We
always put tunes in that everyone will know and love because we’re
all about turning the night into a party.
five years before it began to wind down. I decided to take
the positive bits from that and make it bigger and more
flamboyant. The idea was we’d have a brass section and
two singers but then I started putting it together and as I
was adding new bits it kept getting better, so it wasn’t till
we had twelve people that I said we had enough.
How did you find supporting The Wailers in Manchester
and Sheffield last year?
It was fantastic and obviously great for our profile. The bands,
crowds and all the people we worked with on those gigs were
fantastic. It meant people who hadn’t ever been to see us, saw what
we were about. We’d never played in Manchester before and we
walked out to a completely full house of about 1,500 people – that
was quite a good leg up in the area.
Your reputation as a live band is phenomenal,
what’s the formula for your continued success?
The two things that always take people aback is the horn
section and the fact we have five singers. We don’t have
a fail safe method but there are some songs that we
pretty much always play, like Gangsters by The Specials,
because everyone expects that from a Ska band. Our other
thing is taking less well known stuff, like Lee Perry and The
Upsetters that were never massive, and creating our own
version.
You’ve built up a reputation as a great festival band, how
are they to play?
They are often an absolute dream because all the work is done
for you and you’ve just got to turn up with your instruments and
play. The biggest crowd we’ve played was at Tramlines Festival in
Sheffield, on an absolutely beautiful day. We were on the stage in
the huge Peace Gardens and when we started there was plenty of
space in the crowd but by the time we’d finished it was completely
full of people. As we came off, the crew told us that they’d had
to start fencing off the gardens because it was now too full! I later
found out that the official capacity for the Peace Gardens is 5,000
people, so that was a brilliant thing to experience.
How did Jungle Lion come to be a 12 piece outfit?
Some years ago I was in another Ska covers band. It was the first
time I’d done it professionally and we had really good times for
How do you cope getting twelve people on a stage?
The brass section stand still so they’re usually okay, it’s the
singers who move about that have problems. We’ve had
gigs where just the band takes up half the room, in fact on
one occasion our guitarist had to stand on his amplifier –
there wasn’t room for them both.
What else do you have planned for the summer?
It’s our first time at Mosborough Music Festival which
we’ve heard is very good and there’s also Grousefest in
Chesterfield. It’s a mini festival at The Grouse pub, which is
in a residential area so there are people in houses and on
balconies dancing for as far as you can see, it’s brilliant.
Jungle Lion play at The Globe on Saturday 17th May. Tickets are £5 from The Globe in advance
or £6 on the door. To find out more and hear Jungle Lion’s music, visit www.junglelionska.co.uk.

Glossoplife Music
Past trends have a habit of coming
full circle and perhaps one of the
biggest revivals of late is the return of
vinyl. Whilst some argue that it never
really died, it’s safe to say it definitely
went into hiding during the turn of the
century. Yet, like the phoenix, it’s now
back, better than ever, and Glossop is
playing a big part.
Local radio producer Simon Galloway is
the man responsible for Glossop Record
Club, a place for music enthusiasts to get
together and rediscover the joy of vinyl.
Meeting on the second Thursday of every
month at Glossop Labour Club, music
fans assemble to listen to albums, on
vinyl, and in full.
Fed up of the “twitchy impatience”
brought on, in part, by “soulless MP3’s
and the shuffle button”, Simon wanted
to reintroduce the thrill of listening to a
full album, without interruption. Upon
discovering that the nearest record club
was in Shipley, West Yorkshire, he
www.glossoplife.co.uk
decided to set up his own, and so in
September 2013, Glossop Record Club
was born.
Each session has its own loose theme.
Past sessions include ‘Songs from 1973’,
‘Elvis v Elvis’ (Presley and Costello), and
some have been curated by local singersongwriters Steve Roberts and Quiet
Loner. Most recently, the club heard
from rock & roll historian and club regular
Bill Jubb for the ‘Sun Records and The
Million Dollar Quartet’ evening. Members
are encouraged to bring along gems
from their own treasured collections, and
to find a way to sneak in anything by
Glossop Record Club’s unofficial mascot,
Frank Sidebottom.
The club has quickly grown in popularity,
and has seen members rack up the
miles to attend, welcoming folk from
Preston, Prestwich and even as far away
as Nottingham, which regular attendee
James Handford, from Broadbottom
attributes to the relaxed, friendly
atmosphere - and of course, the music.
James says, “It’s always a great evening.
It’s a chance to talk to other music fans
and discover stuff that you may never
have heard of. I listen to music a lot, but
I’m normally doing other things at the
same time, so this is a great excuse to
sit and listen to a full album and not be
distracted by other things. Plus, it’s £2.50
a pint - can’t argue with that!”
The next session, which takes place on
Thursday, 8th May, features a talk from
author Graham Jones about his book,
Last Shop Standing, which documents
the rise and fall of independent record
shops, and members are encouraged to
bring along their booty from Record Store
Day.
There’s no need to book and it’s free to
come along - all you pay for is the beer
(although donations to the Labour Club
are always gratefully received). So what
are you waiting for? Come along…it
sounds like you’ll like it.
