Recruiting
To all Members of the Palmetto Battalion: As you all are aware our Battalion numbers have been dwindling over a past number of years. I perceive this to be our #1 potential problem for our future. I know many of our present Company Captains have forgone advancement in order to stay with their Companies in order to stabilize loss of members & attempt to revitalize their membership. I greatly understand an honor you for your decisions & efforts. As your newly elected Lt. Colonel, I want to join you & all involved in the PB in this continuing & complex, undertaking. I use the word complex because because there is a multitude of reasons members leave and do not return. (Please let us discuss this later) . The many reasons for leaving however is not the point of this missive. At this time I want to address recruiting. No matter what we do, people will be leaving our ranks for reasons we could never change. Our Future is in Recruiting. This has become more difficult over the years due to so many diverse distractions, and competing hobbies of the younger generation. That means we are just going to have to work a little harder with more effort on our part. I know we have had Recruiting Tables sporadically at events. I would suggest not only to we need one at every event (recruiting for all infantry, artillery, cavalry & civilian familyʹs as well) but at the spectator line at the battle itself. This is the main point of spectator interest & possible interaction. We usually have an announcer at the Battle who could & should direct interested parties to the Recruitment Table. This is also the highest point of interest to the spectators when maybe the juices or flowing to be involved. We do not want to take anyone out of the Battle Scenario in order to work the table. We need members who for any reason are not in the battle that day from all parts of the Battalion. This table would move to the sutlers area after the battle. This table needs to be open & maned during all times that the event is open to the public. Especially during school days were many young people are in attendance. We need to be also looking for Musicians to enhance our program at this portion of the event. At this time I am looking for Recruitment Forms, Recruitment Posters and anything to enhance our Recruiting Table. Also volunteers to man the table at each event. All suggestions are encouraged and will be greatly appreciated in this endeavor of Recruiting for the entire Palmetto Battalion. I am also interested in your thoughts of some form of advertising prior to events for recruits using the event promoters. Any thoughts here ? ? Colonel News from the Adjutant With the 2015 Secessionville event cancelled by the property owner, the 2015 events came to an end with Brattonsville. I regret not being able to attend the event Sunday, but those of you present Saturday know the physical condition I was in during elections. At the time of this writing I am still dealing with some physical issues but I hope to be fully recovered by our first event in 2016, which will be Pocataligo. We have a new Battalion command staff and we need to rally behind them if we are to keep our beloved hobby alive. Several units have stepped up and gotten their dues for the 2016 season to me early, which is a good thing. However, many units are waiting until the very end to get dues in. The deadline is November 30th, which is 24 days from this writing. Please do not procrastinate! One reason to change the due date was to allow units to collect their dues when they normally did and get them in on time. Unfortunately many are not taking advantage of this opportunity. An issue that took place during elections involved several members challenging their attendance. The final list of events attendance was posted months before the elections, thus allowing members an opportunity to challenge why they did not receive credit. Please understand it is your unit’s leadership responsibility to record you present at an event and turn this information into me in a timely manner so I can enter it into the attendance log. If they do not turn your name in then you do not receive credit. Likewise, if you do not pay your dues, it does not matter how many events you attend, you do not receive credit for events attended until you dues are paid; and then it is only those events you attend as a dues paid member. Since dues are now paid more near the end of a reenacting year, you are actually paying to receive credit for the next season. So, in order to be able to receive credit to vote in the 2016 elections you must pay your dues and attend three (3) events that are listed on the Battalion’s calendar. As I suggested in my last Vindicator article, company commanders and first sergeants need to communicate with the members of your company to remind them of upcoming events and encourage them to attend. Our companies have members spread throughout the state, which I am certain makes communication and the opportunities to get together a challenge. Still, it is your responsibility to motivate the members of your companies to attend events. We have gotten complacent in expecting members to look at the Battalion’s webpage or Facebook to see when events are scheduled. For some people that works, but not for everyone. Sending out an email or newsletter, or picking up the phone a couple of weeks in advance, then call again a week out to get a headcount, might help to encourage members. One reason why some companies do better than other is because they communicate; so let’s all work the same way and see if we can get our numbers back up. Gentlemen:
We are faced with an issue that requires immediate attention. It will take all of us working together to
solve this. I know the battalion staff can depend on you to handle this matter accordingly.
As a reminder:
1. The legal age to consume alcoholic beverage in SC is 21 or older
2. No one under the age of 21 may possess or consume alcoholic beverage
3. No one 21 or older can provide alcoholic beverage to a person under the age of 21
In SC providing alcoholic beverage to someone underage is a crime, Contributing to the Delinquency of a
Minor. Not only is it a crime, it is a felony carrying a penalty of up to ten years confinement.
Therefore, I am issuing the following field orders effective immediately for any Palmetto battalion event:
1. All minors (under the age of 17) shall supervised by a parent or guardian of record at all times
during event.
2. All suspected incidents of underage drinking shall be immediately reported to the battalion staff
officer on site. Staff officer will contact minor’s parent or guardian to have them removed from
the site.
Following these rules keeps us in good grace with our insurance company. It also prevents us from
being sued both as an organization and individual. In our current day of political correctness, the last
thing we need is for an underage drinking incident to end up in the hands of the media.

Release of Liability
Every person attending and participating in an event at the Confederate Memorial Park is
required to sign a Release of Liability. Your signature on site or your preregistration indicates
that you have read and understand the Consent and Release shown below.
Battle of Aiken Reenactment - Consent and Release Form
I (and for any minor children attending with me) fully understand the possible dangers
involved in a re-enactment including, but not limited to, the increased danger resulting from
the use of gunpowder. I will take all actions necessary to protect myself, my family, fellow
participants, spectators, and others attending the Battle of Aiken. Realizing the possibility of
injury to myself or my family members and loss and/or damage of personal
equipment/properties; I agree to withhold from liability all members and /or their family of the
following: The Battle of Aiken Committee and Staff, the B/G Barnard E. Bee Camp #1575. The
property owners, Security and Emergency Response personnel, all other participating
organizations, owners of adjoining lands, and all other participants or attendees of the event. I
agree to abide by all given and posted rules of the event and recognize the right of the Battle of
Aiken Officials to dismiss and /or have removed any person from the event for unruly, unsafe
behavior or violation of the rules. The participant grants permission to the Battle of Aiken and
their agent to utilize the participant’s image or likeness incidental to any live or recorded video
display, photography, or other reproduction, in whole or in part of the event.
In consideration of being permitted to enter any restricted area (herein defined as including,
but not limited to, the: Barnard E. Bee Confederate Memorial Park, campgrounds, parking
areas, walkways, concessions, and other areas appurtenant to any area where any activity
related to the event shall take place), or being permitted to work or for any purpose participate
in any way in the event, EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED, for himself/herself, his/her personal
representatives, heirs, and next of kin, acknowledges, agrees, and represents that he/she has,
or will immediately upon entering any such restricted area(s), and will continuously thereafter,
inspect such restricted area(s) and his/her participation, if any, in the event constitutes an
acknowledgement that he/she has inspected such restricted area(s) and that he/she finds and
accepts the same as being safe and reasonably suited for the purpose of his/her use and he/she
further agrees and warrants that if, at any time, he/she is in or about restricted area)s) and
he/she feels anything to be unsafe, he/she will immediately advise the Officials of such and will
leave the restricted area(s):
1. HEREBY RELEASES, WAIVES, DISCHARGES, AND COVENANTS NOT TO SUE the promoter,
participants, association, sanctioning organization, or any subdivision thereof, ground operator,
grounds owner, officials, any persons within any restricted areas, sponsors, advertisers, lessees
of the premises used to conduct the event and each of them, their officers, employees, and
family members, all for the purposes herein referred to as ‘releases’, from all liability to the
undersigned, his/her personal representatives, assigns, heirs, and next of kin for any and all loss
or damage, and any claim or demands therefore on account of injury to the person or property
or resulting in death of the undersigned, whether caused by the negligence of the releases or
otherwise while the undersigned is in or upon the restricted area(s), and/or competing,
officiating in, observing, working for, or for any purpose participating in the event.
2. HEREBY AGREES TO INDEMNIFY AND SAVE HOLD HARMLESS the releases and each of them,
and their family members, from any loss, liability, damage, or cost they may incur due to the
presence of the undersigned in or upon the restricted area(s), and /or in any way competing,
officiating, observing, or working for, or for any purpose participating in the event and whether
caused by the negligence of the releases or otherwise.
3. HEREBY ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH, OR
PROPERTY DAMAGE due to the negligence of releases or otherwise while in or upon the
restricted area(s) and/or in any way competing, officiating, observing, or working for, or for any
purpose participating in the event.
EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED expressly acknowledges and agrees that the activities of the
event are very dangerous and involve the risk of serious injury and/or death and/or property
damage. EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED further expressly agrees that the forgoing release,
waiver, and indemnity agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by
the law of the Province or State in which the event is conducted and that if any portion thereof
is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force
and effect.
THE UNDERSIGNED HAS READ AND VOLUNTARILY SIGNS THE RELEASE AND WAIVER OF
LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, and further agrees that no representations, statement,
