SOLVE was formed in 1969 by pioneering Governor Tom McCall to
mobilize our community on a mission to protect and preserve this beautiful
and unique place we call home.
At that time, our call-to-action was to Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism
(SOLV). Fast forward 45 years. While we remain true to our original calling,
we have evolved to SOLVE broader challenges in our environment; moving
from an acronym to action. You may know us best from our annual beach
cleanups, but that is just a drop in the ocean compared to what we do every
day to keep Oregon clean and green.
Our vision is an Oregon with healthy land, water, and air. We clean
communities and natural areas through removal of trash and invasive
plants. We restore land and rivers through the planting and maintenance
of native trees and shrubs. We educate through service-learning programs
in local watersheds and in schools. And most of all, we involve over 35,000
Oregonians each year through volunteerism in seven annual programs.
We love Oregon, and we take action to keep it clean and green. Thank you
for taking care of Oregon with us!

bring together individuals, communities, businesses, and schools to improve
our environment and to build a legacy of stewardship.

SOLVE It.
We Clean, Educate,
Restore, and Involve.
SOLVE organizes and supports over 1,000 cleanup and
restoration projects through seven programs.
Spring Oregon Beach
Cleanup
Each year, over 4,000 Oregonians travel from all over the state
to help at 45 coastal cleanup sites. From Fort Stevens State Park
near Astoria to Harris Beach State Park in Brookings, thousands
of volunteers scour the coastline each year to protect our oceans,
wildlife, and coastal economies.
Beach and Riverside Cleanup
The SOLVE Beach and Riverside Cleanup mobilizes volunteers
at 110 coastal and inland sites. While litter, illegal dumps, and
marine debris continue to impact Oregon, the thousands of
volunteers who participate in the Beach and Riverside Cleanup
prove that together, we make a big difference.
SOLVE IT for Earth Day
SOLVE IT was started in 1990 as an opportunity to clean
up Portland area neighborhoods and illegal dumpsites. Since
then, this event has grown to become one of the largest Earth
Day events in the nation. Taking place over many days across
the entire state, SOLVE IT incorporates close to 200 projects
involving more than 6,000 volunteers each year.
Oregon Adopt-a-River
A partnership between SOLVE and the Oregon State Marine
Board, this program supports individuals and organizations
in cleaning and preserving their favorite stretch of waterway
anywhere in the state of Oregon. Currently, over 500 miles of
river have been adopted.
Green Team
A yearlong service-learning program, SOLVE’s Green Team
engages K-12 science classes in stream and wetland enhancement
projects. Green Teams are currently in 26 schools with more than
2,200 students involved in active restoration, adopting streams
in their local communities.
The program helps students connect stream health to their
neighborhood and prepares them to be involved in these activities
throughout their lives, with many students going on to careers in
environmental science.
Team Up
Team Up for Watershed Health builds sustainable communities
and healthy watersheds by mobilizing volunteers that work on
riparian restoration projects. The program creates community
partnerships and provides technical information, training,
support, and education for over 1,400 volunteers, focusing on
preserving these natural areas.
Project Oregon
Project Oregon helps individuals, groups, students, and teachers
organize restoration projects and cleanup efforts in their local
communities.
SOLVE provides assistance and training to volunteer leaders,
helps organize projects, and recruits volunteers. Project Oregon
helps new projects get started and existing volunteer efforts
become even stronger.
Annually, there are over 500 cleanup and restoration projects
taking place throughout the state of Oregon.
