The Sphynx cat is either exceptionally endearing or
extraordinarily creepy, depending on your point of view—
and quite possibly whether you happen to see one lounging
in someone’s lap or prowling a dark alley in the dead of
night. Although Sphynxes have a very slight, short down
coat and the occasional tuft of hair at the tip of the tail, the
breed otherwise appears completely hairless. The breed is
highly susceptible to chill and sunburn, so these cats are
best kept indoors and away from the elements. While this
particular cat could very well have given rise to the saying
that one has “a face only a mother could love,” its strange
appearance does not detract from its lovability or ability to
serve as a devoted companion.
American icon Ernest Hemingway was more than just a
prolific writer; he was also a cat lover. While Hemingway
was living in Key West, Florida, a local ship’s captain
bestowed upon him a six-toed feline companion—his first
of many—known in scientific terms as a polydactyl.
Whereas ordinary cats have five toes on each front paw and
four toes on each rear paw, polydactyl cats—also called
“mitten” cats for their profusely large paws—have six or
more digits on one or more paws. Today, operating under
the terms of his will, the Ernest Hemingway Museum and
Home harbors some 60 cats, many of which are
descendents of Hemingway’s original cat and some of
which are polydactyls—or Hemingway cats.
Few things in a cat lover’s life compare to the warm, fuzzy
feeling we experience when a feline friend crawls into our
lap and purrs itself to sleep. But while that little engine tugs
endlessly at our heartstrings, one should heed the wise
words of writer Robert Byrne: “To err is human, to purr is
feline.” Indeed, humans often err in believing that a cat’s
purr is always a sign of contentment. The truth is cats may
purr when they are anxious, stressed, ill, injured, or even
close to death. Cats are also known to purr when giving
birth and nursing their kittens. Some believe that purring
has a self-healing and calming effect on cats—no kitty
Prozac necessary.
“When Dr. Evil gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset.
And when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, people die!”
Although actor Mike Meyers had audiences in stitches
playing dual roles as the groovy secret agent Austen Powers
and his conniving arch nemesis Dr. Evil, it was undoubtedly
Mr. Bigglesworth—a Sphynx cat—that stole the show. In
the beginning of the movie, Mr. Bigglesworth makes his
onscreen debut as a beautiful white Persian. But chaos
ensues, and Dr. Evil makes a hasty getaway in a cryogenic
freezing capsule, with Mr. Bigglesworth in tow. During
the unfreezing process, something goes awry and Mr.
Bigglesworth exits the cryogenic chamber no longer a
fanciful Persian, but a scraggly looking, bald, wrinkly feline.
