Celebrate the call of Pr. Chris as Lead
Pastor – Support our Fall Hunger Focus
As we celebrate the Call of Pr. Chris as our lead pastor,
we are asking that any gifts you might want to give be
given to our Fall Emphasis on Hunger. There are several
aspects of hunger alleviation currently at the forefront.
Pr. Chris has been a leader in working to support and
minister to those in need and in bringing together others
to share in this support.
What better way to celebrate his new call as our lead
pastor.

Exodus From Hunger - October 19-20-21
Local collection for hunger
is a part of
“Exodus from Hunger” effort
Hunger is not just a global problem; it affects
people who live only miles from St. Matthew’s.
That is why, during our month-long hunger
emphasis, we are highlighting a food collection
for Reformation’s Food Pantry. Foods collected
during the October hunger emphasis will be
directed toward a specific ministry of the pantry,
the monthly Community Food Day. On that day,
families in the neighborhood come to receive
one or two bags of groceries (based on family
size) that are filled with a specific combination of
foods. On Saturday, November 10th, volunteers
from St. Matthew’s will gather at Reformation to
sort the food and fill grocery bags. Our goal is
to fill 70 bags, but the need is even greater. We
appreciate your help!
See page 12 for details on all the food items
that are needed for the ‘St. Matt’s Day at
Reformation’ on November 10.
Sustainability Fair, Oct. 20

Sign up now for Food Packing Event
Here’s your opportunity to address hunger
in a very tangible way
Several years ago, St. Matthew’s worked with a program called
Feed My Starving Children to package nutritionally enhanced
meals that were delivered to starving children and their families in
third world countries.
Since then we have sent
several containers full
of food to El Salvador
where it has truly been
received as a blessing
from God!
So now, back by
popular demand, St.
Matthew’s will be
doing another food
packing event on the
weekend of Friday,
October 19th through Sunday October 21st. We have 7 shifts
arranged for people to help pack food. Each shift can accommodate
80 people. Our hope is to pack close to 200,000 meals for children
in El Salvador, so that not only can they have meals to eat, but also
food that is nutritious and vitamin fortified. This food literally
means life to the poorest of the poor.
Please consider giving two hours of your time to help this
important event. You can sign-up online at www.tinyurl.com/
stmattsfoodpacking or in person at church. You may also sign
up for more than one shift if you would like, and friends and
neighbors are always encouraged to participate.
Also, please consider a generous donation to help with the cost of
the food. At close to 0.15 cents a meal, our food costs will be nearly
$30,000. Any amount that you can give to support this vital lifegiving event will go a long way to providing life to children in El
Salvador.
Thank you for considering this valuable faith-filled event. We
look forward to the joy of serving and helping our brothers and
sisters in El Salvador.
Bread for the World Letter Writing Campaign
Advocates for the Hungry in our country
and throughout the world
On Sunday, October 21 during the Education Hour 9:45-10:45
a.m., you’ll have the opportunity to address hunger at the highest
levels - the U.S. government that can support and fund programs
that alleviate hunger for so many.
Although every previous bipartisan deficit reduction package
over the past 25 years has followed the principle that deficit
reduction should not increase poverty, we’re now seeing severe
threats to programs that address hunger and poverty.
We hope you’ll consider coming to this event providing an
opportunity to make your voice heard in regard to this ever
present need.
TOY SWAP!
The annual Toy Swap:
Fun for all, November 11
St. Matthew’s will again be holding its
annual toy swap on Sunday, November 11
at 9:45 in the Upper Room.
Clean out those closets and donate toys
that your children or grandchildren are no
longer using. Bring them to church starting
Monday, November 5. Leave them outside
the office. Larger items should be brought
to the stage.
Our congregation will then “swap”
for toys their family can use. If you have
nothing to swap, feel free to browse the
toy selection and consider a monetary
donation.
Leftover toys are donated to Reformation
Lutheran Church’s Neighborhood Store;
just in time for Christmas.
Items such as children’s books, DVDs,
sports equipment, baby equipment are also
welcome.
Stitches of Love Quilt Blitz
planned for November 10
Join the Stitches of Love Quilt Ministry
for a Quilt Blitz on Saturday, November
10th from 9:00-1:30 p.m. in Fellowship
Hall. The ministry will cut, create and
sew baby quilts from the bins of fabric,
batting and simple patterns. Bring your
quilting supplies and your sewing machine
(optional). Don’t have quilting supplies?
Not to worry, tools will be provided. No
experience needed. The Quilt Ministry, in
its 10th year, is a blend of church members,
friends and family. Come share in the fun
and see results by the end of the session!
Lunch will be provided. No sign up
necessary. The group is going to tuck in a
baby shower for a member at this session.

Memories of Our Saints
to be shared November 4, All Saints Sunday
“Let us remember, so that we will never forget”
On All Saints Sunday, we celebrate the lives of those who have
died in the last year. We celebrate the promises of life after death,
as we remember their impact and love during their earthly lives.
These loved ones will be remembered during the worship services
on November 4, 7:30, 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Included in the list are
members of St. Matthew’s as well as others who are connected to St.
Matthew’s through family members or whom has been ministered
to by our pastors.

Family members have been asked to provide a photo of their loved
one to be included in a slideshow on All Saints Sunday.
Are you and your family living with a loss this year?
In preparation for this All Saints Sunday (November 4th), we
would like to try something new. We would like to remember in a
unique way our loved ones – family and friends – who have passed
away. We want to take time to celebrate their memories and remember how they impacted our lives. In order to do this, we will be
offering several Sunday opportunities for you to write down your
memories of loved ones, that we will then take and use in a display
video in our commons. The presentation of these memory notes,
seeks to lift up how people touched our lives and helped to shape
us into the people we are today. Please take a moment to fill out a
memory sheet in the upper Commons (outside the Sanctuary) during the next several Sundays. Instructions of how to complete them
out will be included on the back of each page. May this time be a
meaningful time of remembrance and thanksgiving to people who
gave their love to us.

Sweet Tour planned for November 14
for SAINTS group
Perhaps you’ve heard these bits of wisdom:
“Money talks but chocolate sings”
- or “Chocolate has preservatives and
preservatives make us look younger”
So, as faithful SAINTS, I know you will want to join us on our
tour of Churches and Chocolatiers to be nourished spiritually and
physically.
Churches and Chocolates - Wednesday Nov. 14
Enjoy a bus tour through Milwaukee, long known as our “City of
Steeples,” while visiting local chocolate shops and different places
of worship. Sponsored by the SAINTS, the tour will begin with
muffins and coffee at the church at 9:00 A.M. and end at 12:30 P.M.
on Wednesday, November 14th.
On the tour, we will delve into
dessert with stops at two east side/
downtown chocolatiers and visit
three local churches to learn about
the history and architecture of these
unique places of worship. Our
three planned church choices are:
St. Joan of Arc – Perhaps the
only medieval structure (1400’s)
in the entire Western Hemisphere
dedicated to its original purpose.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
– View their stunning and extensive stained glass window
collection, including the largest window ever created by Tiffany.
Grace Lutheran – Celebrate 160 years of their history in
downtown Milwaukee.
Coffee, muffins, chocolate treats, guided fun, round trip
transportation, and donations to each of the three churches visited
are included in the $42.00 price. Register at the SAINTS desk by
Sunday, November 4th, to guarantee a registration as space is
limited.
Note: Participants should bring a tote or canvas shopping bag to
keep track of all their “goodies” on the bus. The tour is not handicap
accessible, and participants will need to get on and off the bus at
several locations. Extra cash will be needed for additional chocolate
purchases as not all chocolatiers accept credit cards.

Charitable Giving and
Stewardship at St. Matthew’s
Tim Knutson; Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
As Christians, we are called to respond to the ways that
God has blessed us and we understand the importance
of giving. We know that everything belongs to God and
that as managers of His resources we need to be generous
with our giving and responsible with our savings and
investments. As we reflect on our Stewardship theme for
this year, “Share the Journey,” we welcome Tim Knutson
of Thrivent Financial as he shares on Charitable Giving:
How to make a difference by giving back. This workshop
will help us to learn how to make a profound impact on
the organizations we care about. We’ll learn:
· Charitable giving financial tools that may
decrease taxes and/or supplement retirement
income
· Ways to leave a lasting charitable legacy
· Other ways to “give back”

Introduction to Brain Health
Dawn Adler; Coordinator of Client Education Luther Manor
The human brain is one of the most complex structures
in the entire universe and has over 100 billion neurons
more than the number of stars in the galaxy. Did you
know that if you stretched out these neurons, they would
be about 100,000 miles long, enough to circle the Earth
almost 12 times? To learn more about how to sharpen
the brain and protect it from decline, St. Matthew’s will
be hosting “Introduction to Brain Health” a 3 week
interactive series starting Monday, November 12th.

“Oy Vey!
Just how Jewish were Jesus and St. Paul?”
Dan Bice
Jesus and Paul lived in very different Jewish
communities. How did that affect them and their

Were Jesus and Paul traditional Jews? Or marginal Jews?
We will explore those issues in this class led by Dan Bice.

In a light-hearted take on the culture wars, Flock of
Dodos tweaks egos and pokes fun at both sides in the
evolution vs. intelligent design debate. Evolutionary
biologist and filmmaker Dr. Randy Olson rides along
with jargon-impaired scientists and jargon-rebranding
intelligent designers as they engage in the comic
theatrics that erupt wherever science and religion clash
over the origins of life. Is Darwinian evolution at odds
with belief in a creator God? Is evolutionary theory
even good science?
Does the concept of
Intelligent Design

it good theology?

Renovation Needs: Issue #6 –
Security Needs
This article is the sixth in a series of articles. In each issue of the
Voice, we are addressing the ten needs for building improvement
which were determined through meetings with groups and
surveys of the congregation.
The needs already covered are:
#1 U
pgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning
#2 Improve Staff Offices
#3 Kitchen Modernization
#4 Additional Education Space
#5 Music Space Improvements
#6 Security Needs
Wauwatosa is a safe community!
Having said that, like any city, it’s
not without its attractiveness to those
who commit crimes. You only have
to look at the police report section in
the Tosa Now newspaper to realize
that theft and even break-ins do take
place in our beautiful community.
In the recent past, St. Matthew’s
historic copper downspouts were
stolen, and a wallet and an iPhone
were taken out of a coat pocket during an evening meeting.
There was even a brazen noontime burglary attempt where the
robber was stopped as he was attempting to break open the
office door with a crow bar.
Even though we pride ourselves on being one of the only
churches in Wauwatosa to leave its main doors unlocked
during the workday, that openness does have a cost. In the
past we have found strangers wandering around the building
in the dark behaving suspiciously. We want our ministry to be
accessible, but we also need to ensure the building’s safety and
the safety of those who are in the building. Thankfully, nothing
major has taken place, but that doesn’t mean that something
won’t happen. It’s important to take the proper steps to ensure
the safety.
One of the big improvements we can make in the area of
safety is upgrading our security system. Our current system
was installed 20 years ago, and security systems have improved
a lot since then! Additionally, features such as electronic door
openers, video cameras, and office intercoms can really help
with securing our space. It would also be helpful to be able
to zone parts of the building. By setting up the building as
security zones, we can control who is allowed into certain
parts of the building (for example the choir room on Thursday
nights) and then in turn limit access to the rest of the building at
times when the doors are unlocked for events but the building
isn’t fully in use.
Security is an important concern, not just to prevent theft, but
to keep people safe, especially when you have staff members
working alone at times in a large empty building. Taking this
need seriously is essential as we renovate our space.

Do you live in the “here and now”? Jesus emphasized
today: “So do not be anxious for tomorrow; for
tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34). This
contemplative group is focusing on mindfulness
practices as a way to live in the beauty of the present
moment. Meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday evenings
from 6:45-8:00 P.M. Contact Leslie Giordano at

‘Share the Journey’ Starting October
28th - Annual Stewardship program
begins in one week - watch for your packet
to arrive by Team Captain or by mail
The fall Stewardship campaign begins Sunday
October 28th. This year’s theme, ‘Share the
Journey,’ reinforces a major finding from this year’s
MET report - that St. Matthew’s is a special place.
We are blessed with talents, resources, and a ‘cando’ spirit that guides us to make a difference in the
world! We truly live out ‘Sharing our Journey’!
This year’s campaign will use the familiar route
captain approach. Following the campaign kickoff
on the 28th, each of you will be contacted by your
route captain to schedule the drop-off and pickup of your Stewardship materials. We appreciate
your cooperation to make this a smooth process. As
you complete your commitments, please consider
how you can ‘Share your Journey,’ whether thru
financial commitments or deeper involvement
in our many activities and ministries. We are
completing our plans for the exciting Building
Renovation project and expect that 2013 will be
a major year for this effort. Please prayerfully
consider your commitments to the ‘Building
Improvement Fund.’ The strength of this fund
will establish the financial foundation needed for a
successful renovation project!
Looking forward to a great campaign!

Our Younger Members
2013 Youth Mission Trip
Will Be Bound for Colorado
Next summer’s youth mission trip will take us to
Colorado, where we will be working with various
service agencies in the shadow of the magnificent
Rocky Mountains. The trip is open to all high school
students, currently in 9th – 12th grades. The first
event for this year’s trip is an overnight retreat on
Friday, November 1st.
If you are interested in or would like more
information on the trip, talk to Gretchen. We ask
that commitments be made by October 31st.
What’s Up for Youth?
The Youth Committee has planned a variety of events
for middle and high school youth this fall. Here are
highlights:
Middle School:
Friday, November 16th, 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Middle School Capture the Flag Night
Join us for a night-time game of Capture the Flag and
other activities. All 6th – 8th graders and friends are
welcome. Please bring a non-perishable food item for
the food pantry and a favorite snack to share.
High School
Thursday, October 25th, 7:00 – 11:00 PM
Corn Maze and Movie
Join us as we find our way through a local corn maze
and then return to church for snacks and a scary movie.
Most area schools do not have school on Friday, so this is
a great start to the long weekend. Watch the next issue
of the Voice for cost and other details.
Sunday School Offering Supports the
Work of the church
Envelopes Available at Welcome Center or
from Your Child’s Teacher
Do you need offering envelopes for your Sunday
School-aged child? Three-year-olds recently received
new boxes in Sunday School. New students as well
as returning students who have run out of last year’s
envelopes can get a box of envelopes from their
Sunday School teacher or from the Welcome center
in the Commons.
We encourage you to help your child remember
to bring a regular offering to Sunday School.
Offerings collected provide for the whole ministry
of St. Matthew’s, from maintaining our building to
supporting our partners in Tanzania, El Salvador,
and the central city of Milwaukee.
Often we hear that children are the future of the
church. But the truth is that children are the church
– just as all of us are. And all of us are called to
support the church – the body of Christ – through
prayer, service, learning, connecting, and giving.
Bringing an offering is one way to help children
understand that they are part of that body, and they
are never too young to build it up!
Friday, November 1st

Installation / Africa Sunday: One of the highlights of September 30’s worship services was the performance
of Tunaomba Mungu Atawole, an African song written and arranged by St. Matthew’s Music Director John
Paradowski. After a trip to Tanzania when John learned of this song, he worked with Pr. Elias Kitoi to record
the melody and arrange the song for all to enjoy. The translation of the title means “We Pray God to Reign.”
The piece has been published by Choristers Guild and has been dedicated to the memory of Sue Erickson,
Pr. Gary Erickson’s wife who died in 2007. She led children’s choirs at St. Matthew’s for over thirty years.
The photo shows the New Creation Choir, New Generation Choir, Senior Choir, a percussionist section and
