Chinook School Division No. 211
It truly feels as if I just wrote last
months Hazlet Horizon’s submission –
where is the year going?! We have
several exciting things going on this
month, and a few things that have
already taken place.
School. They will arrive at 230 and we
have some activities planned for them in
the classrooms ending with a school
wide assembly. Please feel free to join
us if you’d like to meet the Chinook
School Division Board Members.
Our first event of March was a visit from
Camille Bell. Camille is local heritage
dance expert and she instructed the
grade K-9’s in some Canadian heritage
dances as well as some international
dances. She also worked with History
30 students on some Metis Dancing.
She was a fascinating guest with much
to share with the kids. We hope to have
her back one day.
Also at the end of March we have our
student led conferences scheduled for
the 24th and 25th. This unfortunately
conflicts with the Swift Current Science
Fair and because so many of our
students are attending that event we
will need to reschedule the Student
Led conference dates to Monday
March 23rd AND Thursday March
26th. Mrs. Bos will be sending out the
schedule for these days shortly.
Next, on March 9th we held the annual
Science Fair. This year’s projects were
really great and a testament to the
experience that our kids have with
preparing for Science Fair. Several of
our students are moving on to Swift
Current and the District Science Fair,
which will be held on March 24th, and
25th.
Upcoming this month we have some
special guests visiting our school on
March 16th as the entire Chinook School
Division Board will be out completing
their school tours with a tour of Hazlet
Have a great month!

Hi Everyone,
Please consider this your invitation to be a judge at the Annual Chinook Regional
Science Fair held at the Swift Current Comp on Mar 24 and 25, 2015. This is an exciting
event to be a part of, showcasing the best of science and technology from grade 7-12
students in the schools across the southwest! Judging is a great way to see what's new
and innovative, and doesn't require a huge commitment of time. The majority of the
judging takes place on the evening of Mar 24, and we'll feed you supper to boost your
energy for the task ahead :) We do require some final judging on the following morning, so if you are available for both of those times, please let me know. Otherwise,
specify your preference in a reply to this email.
Since it is always beneficial to have a wide cross-section of professions and backgrounds represented in our judges' panel, please feel free to forward this email to any
other people you think may be interested in this opportunity, as well. Ideally, we'd
love to have 40+ judges, so if you're interested, don't hesitate to let me know! Thanks
for considering this opportunity, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Dawn Caswell-Falk
Swift Current/Chinook Regional Science Fair Committee

Grade 7 to 12 students will have their Science Fair
projects on display. Come see what a variety of interests
our students have! They will be eager to teach you about
their chosen projects.

The Pawluk/Anderson boys are still
shooting up a storm!

Medicine Hat and Battleford this February.
Chayten won gold at the 3-D shoot at Kyle
this past summer., as well as placing
second (silver) at Moosomin.
Chayten also brought home the silver
medal for his class at the 3-D shoot in

A Decade of Grad
Photos
The Class of 2014 recently donated this
framed collage which displays ten years of
Hazlet Grad Photos.
Have the winter blahs? We are having
an Open house March 24th - April 3rd
1 pm to 6 pm daily
This is a great time to come and see how the
plants are started, ask questions and get
excited for spring.
There will be flowering spring bulb
arrangements, succulent planters, air plants in
glass and tropical houseplants for sale during
this time.
Come, explore your local greenhouse and
watch the plants grow. Enjoy a hot beverage
from our Tassimo brewer.
We are hoping to display all our past
Hazlet Grad Photos in this manner. We
would need sponsors for the 50’s, 60’s,
70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s. The sponsor’s name
will be engraved at the bottom of the
frame. Each frame costs approximately
$300.
If you are interested in sponsoring a
“Decade of Photos” please contact
either Carla Erdelyan at Hazlet School
(678-2133) or Michelle Dewar
([email protected]).
Employment opportunity:

for the months of April, May & June. Please
submit a one page application stating work
experience and references to Box 304, Cabri,
SK. S0N 0J0 by Mar 6th, 2015. A love for
gardening and a willingness to learn a definite

In November the Three Thomson Sisters escaped the cold temperatures in Canada to the Valle de
Uco just south of Mendoza in Argentina. The desert like conditions of this Valley which touts to
have over 300 days of sunshine are ideal for the wine production. The grapes benefit from the
Andean winds to ward off disease so chemicals are not in the formula for Zorzal's world renown
wines. This means that winemakers Juan Pablo and Matias Michelini are able to stay the course to
produce Bio Wines! Water supply too can be a problem but the well on the property means a
constant source of water for the growing of grapes - we even have our own nursery of saplings!
As avantgarde winemakers, the Michelini brothers convinced a local cement company to make
the "EGG" vats. The egg shape creates a natural flow of fluid so the wines are constantly in touch
with the skins to give it that rich flavour. This technology was developed in France and European
wineries are lucky to have 1 or 2 Eggs, We have 10!! The high altitude of this valley also means
more drastic changes in temperature adding to the complexity of the wines.
I say WE because Glenys and I are shareholders in Zorzal Canada and thus this trip was to look at
our investment. Even though the winery is still in its infancy stage (2008) we were thrilled to talk
to Juan Pablo and Gerardo Michelini about their dream - and soon it became our dream as well.
As shareholders we nestled into the rustic apartment on the property for one week. We spent
time with Juampe tasting his experimental wines, we scouted out some property for potential
development with Gerardo and enjoyed a few gourmet meals at other wineries as Zorzal
Shareholders. We even enjoyed a round of golf at the Tupungato Winelands, losing only 2 balls!
Although the original plans for Zorzal included a restaurant and a few apartments for guests and
shareholders, the main focus with new investment money is to expand the bodega as we are
bursting at the seams, buy more eggs as consumer demand is for more fruit forward and less oak
and invest in our own bottling machine to maintain quality. Only 5 hectares of Zorzal land is
planted and there is another 60 hectares for vineyards to be developed over time. We have so
much potential as the Uco Valley of Mendoza is likened to the Napa Valley in California. Great
potential for tourism!
We reluctantly packed our bags for home, leaving behind a few little personal touches from
Canada in the Zorzal apartment. Gracias to Mauricio, Juan Pablo, Gerardo, Cristian and Cynthia in
Mendoza for making us feel so much a part of the Zorzal family. We are pleased with our
investment and encourage other Zorzal investors to enjoy the beautiful sunsets from the terrace
of our winery!!

Abbey-Lancer 4-H Beef Club
Happy St. Patrick’s Day Everyone! It is hard to
believe that March is upon us and the weather is
beautiful! Hopefully, mother Nature brings
moisture in the form of rain—NOT snow!
We have been busy since my last report in
January. Let me fill you in! We had a meeting
February 6th. South-West Funtastic for girls 13-21
was held Feb. 19-21 in Swift Current,
Saskatchewan. 4-H sent each 4-H club in the
province a quilting square to be completed to
represent each club and they will be assembled
into a quilt for Sask. 4-H 100th anniversary. The
annual general meeting will be held in Saskatoon
on March 21-22. Representing our district will be
Cole Hartman (PALS) as member rep, Alvin
Pawlitza (Abbey-Lancer) as Leader rep and Colin
Haggart ( a provincial board member) for the S.W.
region. We had our public Speaking (club level) on
Sunday Feb. 22nd at 2 pm with potluck to follow.
We also had our March meeting this day as well.
We are hosting an Easter Bingo on Sunday, March
29th in Abbey at the Legion. Doors open at 6:30
and starts at 7:00. There will be a bake table and
50/50 draw.
Our S.W. Regional Ski Day was Sat. March 7th at
Hidden Valley Ski Resort at Elkwater, AB. We had
great weather and super skiing.
This year as a fund raiser, we are going to be
selling garbage barrels for $20 a piece so if anyone
is interested, please watch for signs in your area or
call one of our members or leaders for more
information.
Our Beef Leaders talked about the project for the
Intermediate and Senior members. All club
members got to pick out of a hat a Vitamin or
mineral that cattle need and we are to research
and bring back and present the information to our
club.
Our March meeting was held on Feb. 22 after our
Public Speaking. Everyone had Awesome
speeches so I can only imagine that the judges had
a tough time deciding results. Our judges for the
day were: Senior & Cloverbud—Carolyn Templeton
(Eastend) and Janelle Todd (Hazlet). Intermediate
and Junior—Jocelyn Wasko (Eastend) and Tom
Garven (Hazlet). Our results were : Cloverbud—
Aaliyah Undseth, Junior—1st—Georgia Pawlitza,
2nd—Erin Casey, Intermediate—1st Tanner Heller—
Ginter, 2nd—Courtney Fyke, Senior—1st Athena
Jacklin, 2nd—April Haggart. These members all
went on to District Public Speaking hosted by
P.ALS. at Lancer on Sunday, March 1st at 2 pm.
Our club did very well and here are the results:
Jr—1st. Erin Casey, Int.—1st Courtney Fyke, Sr.—1st
Athena Jacklin These members will now be going
to Kyle this Sunday, March 15th to represent our
district at S.W. Regional Public Speaking. Good
Luck! This year Provincial Public Speaking is being
hosted by the S.W. region and will be held in Swift
Current on Sat. April 11th
The Cabri Lions Supper that we are catering to has
been changed to Friday March 27th
This meeting was followed by a delicious pot luck
supper.
It is hard to believe that our Achievement Day is 2
months away. It will be here before we know it.
Have a great month and happy calving..
Erin Casey.
