Uo no Tana Street
This street has an approximately 400-year
history of being a pantry for Akashi locals.
About 100 shops sell, needless to say, fresh
fishery products that include Akashi-dai and
Akashi-dako, which are made available through
the Hiruami system, along with various other
fish paste products and other souvenirs. Local
people affectionately refer to this street as
“Uontana.”

are formed which contain a
diced chewy octopus. They

Trivia of Akashi-yaki
Akashi-yaki is cooked in extremely
he at-c onduc tive c opp er pans.
Akashi City has artisans that still
make copper pans by hand. They
are made through hammering and
stretching the material in order to
achieve baking holes of a uniform
thickness, something which cannot
be realized using machines.
Yakianago (roasted conger eel)
are fatty well-fleshed conger
eels and one of Akashi’s three
representative specialties, along
with sea-bream and octopus.
C o nge r e els that have b e e n
grilled with a sweet but salty
sauce are famous and known as
yakianago. Shops selling them
typically use their own original
sauce and cooking style, thus
making identifying the
dif ference s b et we en them a
particular experience. Yakianago
are a very popular souvenir.

The Akashi Strait and daytime market
system (Hiruami) are the secrets to the
great tasting fresh fish
Akashi City faces the Seto Inland Sea, and is
rich in natural resources. Among others, the
Akashi Strait provides an excellent fishing
ground that provides bountiful nutrition to fish
which grow in a strong current that ensures
they are firmly fleshed. The auction market
system known as “Hiruami” enables any fish
caught in the morning to be delivered to shops
and restaurants by midday, thereby ensuring
the great taste of very fresh fish. We hope you
too can enjoy the Akashi food culture that is
supported by the abundant local nature and the
people.
Akashi-dai (sea-bream) is nurtured by the strong current
and abundant food available in the Akashi Strait, which
ensures their flesh is firm, and thus they are considered
first-grade fish in Japan. It is said that sugata-yaki
originated from an entire Akashi-dai that was char-grilled
and then served to a shogun. Akashi-dai still find favor as a
gift for happy events and as an Akashi specialty.

Akashi-dako are so muscular that they
are said to be capable of “standing and
walking around,” which is due to them
having lived in the strong Akashi Strait
current. Octopuses contain a lot of
taurine, which is an excellent source of
energy! Akashi-dako is what I need to
recommend to you the most!!
Recommendation concerning Akashi-dai
Akashi Furusato Ambassador
Owner of Suisan Iwakawa: Urakami, Yutaka
There is no doubt that the quality and brand
power of Akashi-dai rank among the top in the
nation. The filets of fish look transparent and
silky, something which cannot be seen with
other fish. I am extremely
h a p py to b e a b l e to
prepare dishes using
Akashi-dai.
Being a fishing town Akashi has an abundance of sushi
shops. Skilled sushi chefs extract the maximum umami from
seasonally available fish when making their distinctive types
of sushi.

Akashi Castle
Akashi town, cherished by historical
characters
Akashi is the castle town that developed around
Akashi Castle. It is said that Miyamoto, Musashi

other historical sites that are also related to
famous historical characters, e.g. inscriptions of
the poetry of the Manyo poet, Kakinomoto no
Hitomaro, on stone monuments, and landscapes
described in The Tale of Genji written by
Murasaki Shikibu. You will develop a deep
interest in Akashi and think about those ancient
times while strolling around the town.
Locations related to The Tale of Genji
The Tale of Genji is the world’s oldest love saga and was written by Murasaki
Shikibu. The novel includes a “Chapter on Akashi” that is related on a stage in
Akashi. Some of the shrines, temples, and historic sites that appear in the story still
remain in place. Turn your thoughts to the love story driven by Hikaru Genji and then
visit the actual locations.
Muryokoji Temple and Tsuta no Hosomichi
Muryokoji Temple is said to have been the model of the mansion described in The Tale of

Gesshoji Temple
The gate of Gesshoji Temple was built by Toyotomi
Hideyoshi as the yakuimon of Fushimi Castle, Kyoto,
and then relocated to Akashi Castle as a kiritemon
(both yakuimon and kiritemon are gates that do not
have doors). In the early Meiji era the castles were
demolished and the gates had no role and were
reloc ated again. Some emperors and retired
emperors offered tankas for the gates. A part of
the building has been designated as a cultural
property by the nation and the city.

Dragonfly signpost
A signpost of the meridian line used for the
Japanese standard time. Dragonflies used to be
called “akitsu” an object of which is on the
signpost as the symbol of “Akitsushima,” the old
name for Japan. The signpost is also famous for
the story of Matsumoto, Reiji, an SF comic artist,
who grew intrigued about the universe when he
viewed the dragonfly during early childhood.
