EMS Week
May 15-21 is National EMS Week.
Backus and Windham hospitals are
proud to celebrate and recognize the
critical role our EMS providers fulfill
in the care of our patients, and the
tremendous responsibility it entails.
This year, National Association
of Emergency Medical Technicians
(NAEMT) continues its partnership
with the
American
College
of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) on the EMS
Strong campaign. Together, NAEMT
and ACEP are working to ensure that
the important contributions of EMS
practitioners in safeguarding the
health, safety and wellbeing of their
communities are fully celebrated
and recognized.

of excellence in pre-hospital care,” says
Bill Muskett, EMS Program Manager.

work they do every day, all year long,”

the first EMS Week to celebrate EMS
practitioners and the important work
they do in our nation’s communities.
Back then, EMS was a new profession, and EMS practitioners had
only just started to be recognized as
a critical component of emergency
medicine and the public health safety
net. This realization began 50 years
ago, after the findings and recommendations from the 1966 National
Academy of Science’s whitepaper
“Accidental Death and Disability; The
Neglected Disease of Modern Society” were used to drive the develop-
ment of the current EMS system.
Today, the EMS Strong campaign is
a year round effort to raise awareness
of the role of EMS in public health,
sponsor education in the recognition
of medical and traumatic disease,
promote a culture of safety, and focus
on EMS wellness.
The modern EMS system consists
of first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, police officers, emergency nurses,
emergency physicians, and emergency medicine PAs and NPs.
Backus Medical Staff offices on the move
In an effort to provide more convenience for providers, the Backus Medical Staff Office is moving to the ground floor
of the hospital into the office suite where Credentials is currently located (the former “Planning” suite). The new location will place all medical staff office functions in one location. The transition has begun and the move is expected to be
completed by the end of next week. Phone and fax numbers will remain the same.

them how they are doing, it is a
huge thing.”
Employees with 20, 25, 30, 35 and
40 years of service were recognized
at the event. East Region President
Bimal Patel, who has only been on
the job for five months, said he was
almost “embarrassed” to be addressing a crowd with thousands of years
of combined service to Backus and
Windham hospitals.
Patel said during his short time on
the job, he has heard many compliments from patients about the care
they receive in the East Region. He
cited the fact that working in healthcare and hospitals requires dedication around-the-clock, 365 days
per year.
“You are always here,” Patel said.
“This should not be taken lightly. The
work you do is not easy. Thank you
and congratulations.”
Patel added that healthcare workers are remarkable because they tend
to put the needs of others before
themselves.
“Do not lose sight of the fact that
you need care and support for yourselves,” he said.
The event was hosted by Communications Specialist Steve Coates
who highlighted each year in which
recipients began their service at
Backus with pop culture references including the most popular TV
shows, movies and songs of the day.
The evening concluded with a video
celebrating clinical and non-clinical
staff, at both hospitals, offsite and on
various shifts.

Softball senior named Athlete of the Week
Wheeler’s Raven Houck
This week’s Backus and Windham Hospital/Cumulus Athlete of the Week is Raven Houck from Wheeler High School. She is senior shortstop on the girls softball
team. In a recent game against Windham High School, Raven completed a “homerun cycle” hitting a solo, 2-run, 3-run, and grand slam home run to lead the Lions
to a 13-7 victory. Raven has committed to the University of Pennsylvania to play
softball next year.
The “Athlete of the Week” is nominated by coaches for athletics and for efforts
that go beyond the playing field including extracurricular activities, community
service and schoolwork.
Fans, friends and families can also nominate an athlete by visiting the websites
of Cumulus radio stations The Wolf 102.3, Q105 and WXLM 980 AM. In addition,
HHC employees can nominate an athlete by emailing the player’s name, school,
some details and their contact information to [email protected].

Special skybox tickets are now available for the Nov. 18 Keith Urban concert at
Mohegan Sun Arena, with proceeds to benefit the Backus Volunteer Bridge Program.

The flu season is over at Hartford HealthCare, effective
immediately.
In keeping with our Universal Influenza Prevention
Policy, staff members who received flu vaccination exemptions no longer are required to wear masks. The colorcoded tags distributed during vaccination may be removed
from I.D. badges and discarded.
Please keep in mind that patients still may present with
flu or develop it while hospitalized and that we will continue to care for these patients as usual.
Hartford HealthCare’s Universal Influenza Prevention
Program has saved and protected many lives this year. We
do the safe thing for our patients and families every year
when we get vaccinated against influenza.
Thanks to staff members for setting a vaccination standard that makes us a national leader in this area. I also
