A Catholic community of faith striving to witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation calls us to bring Christ’s
Love to our families, our work places and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to
give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop
a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that
leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming people and
a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s Love.

From Our Pastor
D
ear People of St. Stephen,
This weekend we welcome Sr.
Lucia Benedict, a member of the Ad Gentes
Missionary Congregation, who will speak at
all of our Masses to acquaint us with the
work of her congregation in Nigeria. Sister
is here as part of the summer mission appeal
program of the Archdiocese. This program
helps to make us aware of the mission work
of our church in the wider world. A second
collection will be taken up at all the Masses
this weekend to benefit the sisters’ work. I
invite your generosity.
I want to express my thanks to the Men’s
Club who recently donated $10,000 to our
parish to help us to pay for the new truck
that was purchased last year and that is so
important to us in the snow removal and
other maintenance work of the parish. The
picture of the Men’s Club officers
presenting the donation to the parish is
elsewhere in the bulletin. Through their
“Football Mania” program, the 5K run, and
other fundraisers the Men’s Club supports
many of the ministries of our parish. The
group’s Christmas party for our parish
children is one more way that they
contribute to the parish. I thank them for
their work, and I invite all the men of the
parish to consider joining them.
Thanks to everyone who helped out at our
parish picnic last weekend. The day was hot,
but the rain stayed away. The crowd was
significantly larger than last year, so we had
to do some scrambling for extra tables and
chairs and could have used a bigger tent. I’m
thankful for the patience of people. The
food and drink was very good, as was the
spirit of the people. I want to give special
thanks to Fr. Greg and our Polish
parishioners who organized so much of the
food and drink. Thanks also to Toni Rafferty
and those helping her with our basket
raffles, to the Highlanders group for their
music and dance (Fr. Greg has not forgotten
the dance of his native region in Poland), to
our youth group who helped with children’s
activities, to Matt and Katie Vieck who ran
the 50-50 raffle, to our maintenance staff
who did so much work for the event, and to
our youth group softball team who played
the adults (both groups achieved their goal –
the teens won the game 4-3, and the adults
all walked as well after the game as we did
before.) Thanks to everyone who helped
out and who came to help make it an
enjoyable day. I also want to thank Dennis
Motyka and the other musicians who
brought the lively spirit to our Polka Mass
just before the picnic.
This Monday is Labor Day, the holiday that
used to mark the end of summer but has
become the first long weekend of the school
year. We honor working people and their
contributions to our society. The work
world is something that we do not readily
think about when we reflect on living a
Christian spiritual life. Yet Stewardship
Spirituality helps us to recognize the great
significance of our work. Stewardship
Spirituality begins with a recognition that all
of our life – all of our blessings, talents, and
resources – are God’s gifts to us. Blessed by
God’s gifts, we respond with gratitude – the
gratitude that first expresses itself in prayer
and then leads us to seek to use God’s gifts
in the way that the Lord would desire. The
world of work is one place where we use
God’s gifts. It is a great perspective on our
work to see that work as a way in which I
am a steward of God’s gifts, seeking to do
whatever work I am doing in the way that
the Lord would want me to do it. Work is
one area in which most people spend a great
deal of their time and energy. Seeking to use
the talents we bring to our work in the way
that the Lord would want us to use those
talents is a challenging way that the majority
of people live their faith in the Lord Jesus
every day. We celebrate workers this
weekend. We pray that the dignity of every
worker is respected and that every worker
recognizes that his or her work is a way in
which they live as stewards of God’s gifts.
Seeking to live with the spirit and values of
Jesus in our work world is one challenging
way that we live our faith. May we bring the
spirit of the Lord Jesus into our work world
and into every other area of our lives.
You may have noticed a new Yamaha
Clavinova - an electric piano – in our music
area this weekend. Two weeks ago the old
Clavinova went dead in the middle of the
5pm Saturday Mass. The instrument has
served us well since we opened our church
12 years ago. We were hoping that the
repair would be simple, but the main
electronic board of the instrument went bad
and repairs would have cost at least $2000.
Because of the expectation that other parts
of the instrument would likely fail over the
next year or so, we decided that the most
prudent course of action would be to
replace the instrument. The new Clavinova
costs $9500; we see this as a 10 year
investment in our music ministry as well as
guaranteeing reliability for our weekend
Masses, weddings, funerals, and other
services. I want to thank Mark and Dave
Gorka of our music ministry for their quick
action in hooking up an electric piano used
for practice that enabled us to have music
for our Masses over the past two weeks. If
anyone wishes to make a special donation
for the new Clavinova, you can do so
through the regular offertory collection or
through the parish office. The generosity of
our people enables us to support the fine
music ministry that we have in our parish.
Finally, I want to remind everyone that the
Parish Transformation Initiative begins in
our parish a week from Thursday. More
information is elsewhere in the bulletin.
Please participate in whatever way you can
– by filling out the parish survey and, if you
are able, by participating in the 12 weekly
meetings starting September 11.
I ask
everyone to say a prayer each day for God’s
blessing on this initiative which is meant to
provide direction for our parish in the
coming years.
May God bless you and your loved ones.
Fr. Jay
The Parish and RE Offices will be closed for the Labor Day Holiday
on Monday, September 1.
Mass will be at 9am.
We wish everyone a safe, happy and wonderful end of the summer holiday!

Do we need a pre-school refresher course?
(reprinted from last year)
In keeping with our children returning to school, sometimes, when folks are all grown
up, they forget the valuable lessons they learned as youngsters. Perhaps it would be a
good idea to send every adult back to pre-school for a refresher course. If we all went
back to pre-school, here are a few important things we’d learn to say again:
1. Please. So often, people make selfish demands of other people, forgetting that
gentle requests are far more productive than dictates and ultimatums. Just think how
pleasant our world would be, if we all treated each other with courtesy and respect.
“Would you please. . .” goes much further than “You’d better. . . or else!”
2. Thank You. Ingratitude is at the heart of most misery. Your emotional and
spiritual health is directly linked to the level of thankfulness in your life. If you go
around thinking that “life owes you”, you’re unhappiness is guaranteed. Gratitude at
the root, produces joy as the fruit.
3. I’m Sorry. A measure of maturity is how we own and admit our mistakes.
Whenever we’ve hurt someone, intentionally or without realizing, we must go back
and try to make amends. Saying the actual words, “I’m sorry” is the first step towards
healing in a fractured relationship. A failure to admit failure is the greatest failure of
all! Generally speaking, an offended person will be reconciled with a humble,
heartfelt, honest apology. Of course, the mere words, “I’m sorry”, don’t mean too
much if they are not followed with appropriate action. I recall my mother saying,
“Sorry is as sorry does.”
4. I Forgive You. Forgiveness is difficult, but essential. It isn’t “letting the other
person off the hook”, as much as it is “letting ourselves off the hook of bitterness.”
Small children have a beautiful way of making up after a conflict. They can have a spat
one minute, and then, get over it and be best buddies the next. Wouldn’t it be great if
we grown-ups could learn to let our offenses go like
that? Going back to preschool every few years, for
continuing education is a splendid idea.
Blessings,
Deacon Ken Zawadzki

Parish Transformation Survey—Make your voice heard
As you have been reading and hearing these past couple of weeks, our parish is participating in the Parish Transformation Initiative.
Through Parish Transformation, we will evaluate and reflect upon how we are living out Christ’s mission through our parish
community and develop a plan that will provide us with a road map for how we live out this mission even more vibrantly as we
continue on our faith journey. Information on this initial process is in the bulletin. The core of the process is the 12 weekly meetings
of the Parish Transformation. We invite anyone interested to participate in these meetings or 12 Thursdays from 7 to 9pm weekly
from September 11 through December 4 excluding Thanksgiving.
An important element of the Parish Transformation process is receiving feedback from everyone in the parish. We know that not
everyone will be able to commit the time to attending the meetings each week, but we need your input. Therefore, we are asking
you to complete a survey. The survey should take about 20-30 minutes to complete. This will be important information to the Parish
Transformation Team as it reviews what we may need to do differently as a parish.
For those of you who are comfortable with computers, I encourage you to complete the survey online at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/StStephenTinleyPT
We also have a link to the survey on the front page or our parish website. Paper copies of the survey are available in the back of the
church or at the parish office for those of you again who are not comfortable with the computer. Through Parish Transformation, we
are hoping to surface ideas and approaches that will help our parish even more vibrantly live out Christ’s mission and help all of us to
grow strong in the faith and closer to Christ. We are also hoping to surface ideas and approaches that will help us to reach our friends
who have drifted away from their faith. Therefore, I am requesting that you ask 2-3 friends or family members who have been part of
our parish family in the past but have drifted away from the Church to take this survey. If we are to bring our friends and neighbors
back to the church, we need to understand their point of view. If you are completing a paper copy of the survey, please return it to
the boxes in the back of the church or to the parish office by September 15, 2014. If you will complete the survey online, please do so
by September 20, 2014. I thank you for your time and thoughtful feedback.
Thank You to our Military Men & Women
Serving God’s Word to Those Who Have Served
As Americans and parishioners of St. Stephen, we pray for our troops every week for their success and protection and for their
recovery from any wounds, physical or emotional, that they have received from their service, no matter which conflict they have
served in. You must be committed to the health of our veterans. I have, for a few years now, belonged to a group called “Partners in
Care”. It is a group of clergy from different faiths meeting together at Joliet Armory for training so we can help all servicemen and
women who have difficulty transitioning to civilian life. If you are a veteran, know a veteran or are a family member of a veteran
having difficulty transitioning to civilian life or needs VA care or simply need someone to talk to, please consider giving me a call at the parish office at
708-342-2400. We continue committed to the soldiers who have served our nation and have preserved the freedom we enjoy. Deacon Pete

Stewardship in Action!
Laying the Foundation for Intimacy with God
A Special Parish Mission featuring Rev. Thomas M. Dore, Pastor Emeritus of St. Giles Parish in Oak Park.
This is an Important Program! This program is important whether you are new to spiritually nourishing
ideas that form the Stewardship Way of Life or have put those vital concepts to work in your everyday life for years. “Laying the
Foundation for Intimacy with God” will inspire you to deepen your one-to-one relationship with God as you continue on your
journey to spiritual fulfillment and ultimately perfect union with God. Each person has been given gifts to share with the
community. As St. Paul states so clearly, “To each person the Spirit gives gifts for the common good.” Each individual is called to steward the
many graces of God for the good of others (1 Peter, 4v.10). All of us are always in need of a deepening of our understanding and
commitment of what a steward’s responsibility entails and how to make them more effective. The challenge of sustaining a
faith-based motivation in the midst of parish life is formidable. This Program Was Created for You! Fr. Dore has created this
program to help you with that challenge, to reinforce or rekindle that yearning for greater intimacy with God while dealing with the
practical matters of our everyday world. “Laying the Foundation of Intimacy with God” focuses on four critical areas:
1. Basic understanding of Christian Stewardship. 2. The Importance of Stewardship of Time.
3. Stewards of the Mysteries of God.
4. Intimacy with God.
Fr. Dore will speak at all the Masses on the weekend of September 20 followed by presentations on Monday, September 22,
Tuesday, September 23 and Wednesday, September 24 in the Church. The weekday presentations will begin at 7:30pm.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
“ Let the little children come to me. Do not stop them for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” (Mark 10:14)
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered twice a month during the 10am Mass at St. Stephen. The Children’s
Liturgy of the Word provides the children access to the readings in a way they can understand and actively
participate in the liturgy. From an early age the children learn what God is asking of them and they can follow in Jesus’ footsteps. The
readings are the same readings that their parents are hearing back in church. There is a discussion of the readings so the children walk
away with a sense of what the readings are about. Children’s Liturgy of the Word has been very successful! When it first started
almost five years ago there were about 25 children participating, now there are over 200 children! We are in need of more adult and
teen leaders to keep this wonderful ministry going! Please consider helping out! It doesn’t take a lot of time and all materials are
provided. The only time required is a possible meeting once a year, the time you take reading the materials and the Sunday you
volunteer to lead a group. Call Diane Kotovsky at 815-212-4114 or email her at [email protected].

AND INSPIRATION TO HOPE) SPIRITUAL
St. Stephen’s F.A.I.T.H. (faith and inspiration to

monthly prayer service at 7:00pm on the first
Thursday of the month. The next date is
Thursday, September 4. The goal of this
ministry is to bring Christ’s healing love to
people struggling with illness and to support their
loved ones and caregivers. The foundation of this
ministry is an expectant faith, trusting that the
Lord Jesus will give us what we need. Through
our prayer, we put ourselves in the hands of
God, seeking His will and listening to His voice in
the depths of our hearts. Through prayer and
offering support, we seek to bring Christ’s
healing love to our parishioners who are
struggling with illness. The prayer service will
include quiet music, Scripture reading, a

whatever intentions that the person brings. The
F.A.I.T.H. ministry is founded on belief in the
power or prayer and on four key attitudes of our
faith:
3. We recognize the grace of redemptive
suffering; our willingness to embrace the
Cross of Christ in our lives makes a
difference.
4. We ask for healing in order to be better
servants of the Lord. Healing prayer asks
for help of God in our times of need and

“God’s Big Hug” Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our first meeting after summer break
will be Thursday September 4, at
10am in room 125/126 of the parish
offices. The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a
group of women from the parish who
meet monthly to knit or crochet
shawls for the sick, homebound, those
with terminal illnesses, and other
illnesses and to celebrate a happy
occasion. Our meetings are optional!
We meet on the 1st Thursday of each
month at 10am in room 125 of the
parish offices. Our ministry is open to
everyone—even if you don't have the
time to attend the meetings! Shawls
can be created at home on your own
time and own speed. The purpose of
the prayer shawl is to let the recipient
know that others care for them in
difficult times and are thinking of
them. On the knitter's part, it is a
prayerful process—from the selection
of color to the blessing of the yarn and
needles. The love of making knitted
and crocheted items and a deep caring
for others has been combined into a
prayerful ministry which reaches out
to those in need of comfort and
solace. Donations of yarn as well as
monetary donations are always
welcome. It was noted that those

Please join us as we study and explore Scripture. We meet on Friday mornings in Room 126 from 8:45 AM
until 10 AM. We will soon be studying Second Isaiah. Isaiah is the most often quoted Prophet in the New
Testament. We learn from each other and from our facilitator, and have meaningful, interesting and at times fun
discussions. Our group is very welcoming. This class is for you whether you are new to Scripture or not. If you

momentach zdolni do poświęceń.
ciele. Czyniłem wysiłki, by go stłumić, lecz nie potrafiłem.”(Jr 20,9b).
W Liście do Rzymian święty Paweł, jakby rozumiejąc nasze rozterki, wyczuwając naszą niemoc, pragnienie bycia z Panem, a
jednocześnie widząc wśród sobie współczesnych, z jakim trudem i z jakimi problemami przychodzi się borykać, by żyć
(Rz 12,2). Czy potrafimy
zrozumieć te słowa i zastosować je do własnej osoby?
Please help keep the church neat and clean.
Please do not leave bulletins and other papers on the pews or in the racks. Thank you.

To help keep the list of names read at Mass and placed
in the bulletin accurate and current, we will keep the
name of a non-parishioner who is an immediate family
member of our parishioner on the list at Mass for two
weeks and in the bulletin for two weeks. For a
parishioner, we will keep the name on the list at Mass
for four weeks and in the bulletin for 60 days. We ask
that an immediate family member call after 4 weeks if
you wish to have the name continued to be read at
Mass.
