filled with many experiences about the
cowboy way of living and he loved every
minute of it.

Following the Open Meeting Law
I
have the odd habit, when eating a meal, of eating one
kind of food at a time from my plate. I start with the
least-favorite item and work my way up. And when
working on tasks, I prefer to work on one thing at a time
until it is complete.
I have learned that effective and open government
doesn’t allow for a “one thing at a time” approach. Many
matters are always being considered at the same time and
all deliberations are made openly. That is the reason why
occasionally you will see a NOTICE sign at the post office
saying, in effect, that four or more council members will
be at a meeting, but that no town items will be discussed.
This is something not very convenient, but it is
necessary. It precludes members from doing “behind
the scene” what should always be done only in a public
setting. I rejoice that the Arizona State Legislature
rejected the resolution from Senator Sylvia Allen (District
6) which would have abolished Arizona’s Open Meeting
Law. There is enough hanky-panky in government without
adding more.
At our last, and very open, meeting of Town Council,
some of the items dealt with were these:
1. During the call to the public, several citizens returned
to speak again about the need for greater animal control
in Kearny. It was a spirited and good discussion. The
Town is already negotiating an intergovernmental
agreement (IGA) with Hayden to work cooperatively. The
Council also directed the Town Manager and legal counsel
to review and propose a revision of the animal control
Oasis
Insurance
ordinances. A couple of bites, but not a full meal.
2. During the business session, the Council, responded
to a request from the Copper Basin Railroad to consider
eliminating the All Terrain Vehicle Corridor (which is
all on railroad land). At the previous meeting of Council,
Mr. James Hosea had been asked to explore community
sentiment on the issue. He presented a petition with
many signatures supporting retention of the corridor.
The Council discussed the issue, then voted to open
negotiations with the Copper Basin Railroad for a written
agreement retaining the corridor in a matter agreeable to
both parties. The previous agreement had been an oral
one.
The Council also voted to approve a trial Facebook page
for the Police Department once a set of guidelines for
use is written. It also approved entering into a Highway
Safety grant to acquire a new vehicle for DUI and traffic
safety enforcement. Finally, it approved a grant request
to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in the amount of $200,000 for
rebuilding the town swimming pool. I hope to write more
about this next week.
This was all done in public, without fanfare or rancor.

Kearny Council discusses easements
and Police Facebook
By Mila Besich-Lira
Copper Basin News
The Kearny Town Council held their
monthly meeting last month. The council
had an in-depth discussion on the ATV
corridor and drainage easement with
the Copper Basin Rail Way. Several local
residents commented that the path way
often has standing water on the trail
which makes it difficult to use. The council
discussed the existing agreement and it
was suggested that the agreement possibly
be modified due to the fact that the town is
responsible for the drainage issues.
Another hot topic agenda item for the
evening was the use of a Facebook page
for the Kearny Police Department. It was
reported during the meeting that the
department has had a page since 2012,
however no one knows who set it up. The
council held a lengthy discussion on the
use of the Facebook page. Interim Chief
Corso, explained that they would set up
guideline on the use of the page to promote
public safety information and would use
caution when posting pictures especially
of youth in the community. One of the
discussion points that occurred during
the meeting was the use of Facebook to
bash people and possibly the department.
Chief Corso assured the council that
they would not allow negative comments
to be posted on the page, if negative or
harassing comments were posted the page
admins would delete them. After lengthy
discussions, the council voted to allow the
police department to use the Facebook
page under a three month trial.
The council also approved the police
department to apply for a grant to acquire
a patrol vehicle for DUI enforcement and
approved the staff to apply for a revenue
sharing grant from the Pascua Yaqui tribe
to help with pool repairs. The council
heard a presentation from Elizabeth
Magallanez with Gemini Hospice about
their services that are available throughout
the tri-community area.

Some Bunny in Kearny
sure loves Easter
Kearny - It’s springtime and that means
the Easter bunny is on his way, to visit and
spread cheer, here, there and everywhere.
Easter Egg hunts, here in America, are a
nationwide celebration, thrown by local
government, celebrated in news as tots
scramble across the lawn of the White
House, hosted by church groups and nonprofit organizations, making Easter more
than just a family or religious holiday. Yet,
making it, at one and the same time, very
much all about the family; but, the larger
family, covered over by the same flag, and,
united by choice.
The Town of Kearny, joining in the fun,
is hopping with activity, getting ready for
the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Bring your
family, friends, bonnets and baskets to
Hubbard Park on Saturday, April 4, to
hunt and seek the hidden, myriad-colored
treasures, in a traditional community
activity that links the generations. To
volunteer, please come at 7 a.m.
We Know A Lot About Him!
A
s we noted, the famous philosopher
Bertrand Russell wrote that “it is
quite doubtful whether Christ ever
existed at all, and if He did we do not know
anything about Him.” Contrary to Russell’s
assertion, it is quite certain that Christ
existed. With this article let us discuss
whether or not much is really known about
Him.
Lee Strobel, in his book “The Case for
the Real Jesus”, details some accusations
made against the trustworthiness of the
New Testament and then brings scholars
to bear on the subjects. The first challenge
he mentions in this regard comes in the
form of this question: “Is the Bible’s
portrait of Jesus unreliable because of
mistakes or deliberate changes by scribes
through the centuries? His answer: “No,
there are no new disclosures that have
cast any doubt on the essential reliability
of the New Testament. Only about one
percent of the manuscript variants affect
the meaning of the text to any degree, and
not a single cardinal doctrine is at stake.
Actually, the unrivaled wealth of New
Testament manuscripts greatly enhances
the credibility of the Bible’s portrayal of
Jesus.”
The second challenging question is: “Are
scholars discovering a radically different
Jesus in ancient documents just as

credible as the four Gospels? (e.g. Gospel
of Thomas, the Gospel of Peter, the Gospel
of Mary, the Secret Gospel of Mark, the
Jesus Papers, the Gospel of Judas)
His answer: “No! All of the alternative
texts that are touted in liberal circles are
too late to be historically credible.” In
contrast, the Four Gospels (Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John) are credible
records of Jesus because: 1) they were
certainly written in the middle of the first
century, 2) they are consistent with one

Snake-y love entertains local artists
By Vicki Clark
Copper Basin News
Never in my life would I have expected to
see what I witnessed last week. I was born
and raised in Arizona and I think maybe I
have seen three or four live rattlesnakes and
never two at a time. Lucky I guess. Well, this
is quite a story, at least for me.
The ArtUs group, that I paint with every
Thursday, began their day as usual. We
meet every Thursday in Ray Hall, next to
the United Methodist Church. Nothing
special until after lunch. The weather was
beautiful and the doors were opened up
onto the back patio.
Fellow artist Gary Hill noticed an activity
just across the patio, maybe 15 feet from
the open door. Lo and behold there were
two rattlesnakes engaged in something that
was unreal at least to us. A mating dance
perhaps, who knows but it was fascinating.
We all gathered to watch and at first were
very apprehensive. These two were not in
the least bit put off by our presence and
continued to pursue their thing. We all got
much braver and moved in to take pictures.
And we got plenty, plus videos…and they
didn’t seem to care.
After about 30 minutes they left the area
and left all of shaking our heads. This
display put a whole new twist on artistic
creativity.
And oh, needless to say, we shut the doors.

Halfway through the season, Jr. Lady Bearcats 4-0
to the Globe Tigers. Being a rematch from last
year’s Championship game, there was a little bit of
excitement in the air from the Globe crowd.
The Ray Bearcats were first at bat. A Tara Lorona
single and scored run led the charge in the first inning.
The Tigers sent five batters to the plate with no runs
scored. The second inning the Bearcats result was 3
up, 3 down. The Tigers second at bat yielded 2 runs
from 6 batters.
In the third inning the Bearcats sent 4 batters to the
plate resulting in no runs scored. The Tigers managed
to score 2 more runs on some fielding miscues. With
the top of the fourth inning at hand and the score 4-1,
the Bearcats had some work to do. This inning, the
offense woke up. A Daniella HInojos double, followed
by a Shelby Yocum double and an RBI hit by Danielle
Barajas brought life into the offense. The Tigers
offense tried to keep up with the Bearcat offense but
the Bearcat defense began to clamp down. At the end

of 4 innings the score was now 4-3 Globe.
Trailing by one run and entering the top of the fifth
inning, a single by Miranda Figueroa, a triple by Tara
Lorona, and an RBI by Destiny Gonzales scored 2 runs
for the Bearcats. With the score now 5-4 Bearcats,
the Tigers were now trying to rally their offense in the
bottom of the fifth inning. While sending 4 batters to
the plate, no runs scored.
With the final at bat for the Bearcats at hand and
looking to score some insurance runs, 3 runners were
able to get on base only to see inexperienced base
running lead to no runs scored. With the sixth and
final at bat at hand for the Tigers, trailing by 1 run, the
Globe offense gave it their best shot, but the Bearcats
defenses was able to get a 3 up, 3 down. The final
score was Bearcats 5, Tigers 4.
“This game was a great team effort to bounce back
from 4-1 deficit and not allow another run to score in
the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to seal the win,” the coach
said.
On the offensive side of the game for the Bearcats,
Tara Lorona (2-3, triple), Miranda Figueroa (1-2),
Daniella Hinojos (1-3, double), Shelby Yocum (1-3,
double), and Danielle Barajas (1-3). On the mound
Daniella Hinojos (11K, 1W) led the defensive charge.
“Game ball went to the 4th and 5th inning batters,”
the coach said, “game changers with their batting.”
The Jr. High Ladycats will host the Hayden Lobos
today and the Superior Panthers on Monday. Both
games are scheduled to start at 4pm. Come out and
support the Ray Bearcats!
EOE M/F/D/V
The Junior High Bearcats faced off against two teams
from last year’s championships before the Spring
Break. The first team to roll into town was the Blue
Devils of Eloy.
The Blue Devils reloaded in the pitching department
from last year and were ready for the rematch with the
Bearcats. In what turned out to be a pitching duel, the
only registered hit for both teams in this four inning
matchup was a single by Tara Lorona in the second
inning.
Great base running and an eye for the ball led to the
Eloy pitcher yielding 15 walks and 5 strikeouts, en
route to a 10-0 win for the Ray Bearcats.
Tara Lorona was 1-1 on the offensive side for the day.
Daniella Hinojos (9K, 6W) took the mound and kept
the Eloy batters hitless through 4 innings.
“Game ball went to the team,” said coach Dan Hinojos
“Total team effort.”
The second game of the week took the Bearcats

another, and 3) they present historical
details which are consistent with the
history and culture of Palestine in the 20s
and 30s.
A third challenging question is: “Doesn’t
the Da Vinci Code allegation that Emperor
Constantine collated the books of the
Bible in the fourth century and burn all
the alternative gospels make sense?” New
Testament scholar Craig Evans responds
to this by saying, “…the Christians had
no control over the city. They couldn’t
command or coerce anyone to burn
anything … The idea that there was some
sort of culling process or purging that took
place is really absurd.” Furthermore, the
existence of so many fictional writings
from the second century and later proves
Evan’s point. If there was a culling process
in the fourth century, why did they put out
of existence only first century alternative
writings?
Contrary to modern popular
sensationalist media, we can trust the New
Testament record, and so we do in fact
know a lot about Jesus.
