Well, as the 2014-15 school year wraps up, it is time to sit back and reflect on a year of
growth, development, change and who could forget, winning! What better way to do that than
with an award trip for those most actively involved! On June 16th, the Buhach Colony FFA
took the top 24 most active students on a fun filled trip to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to
celebrate their success and enjoy relaxing day.
In order to encourage our members to get involved with the countless
opportunities that Buhach Colony FFA has to offer, students have the option to fill out the
Point of Award (POA) sheet each month documenting their involvement and adding up the
corresponding points given to each event. At the end of the year, the 24 students with the most
points, receive the opportunity to go on the Point of Award trip. This year the trip was a
blast. Those in attendance spent the day riding rides, eating delicious boardwalk food, and
spending a little relaxing time with their friends and fellow FFA members on the beach in the
most perfect weather. We encourage all students to get involved and take advantage of this
opportunity. Next year our POA trip will be at Knights Ferry where we will go white water
rafting. Plan ahead, start earning those points now!!!!

The Buhach Colony FFA has some exciting
plans to bring to the upcoming 2015-16 school year
put in place largely by the newly elected chapter
officer team. The team, consisting of President
Madison Osborne, Vice President Ross May, Secretary
Jose Medina, Treasurer Stephanie Stewart, Reporter
Tiffanie Underwood, Historian Madison Murphy,
Sentinel Michaela Clark and Parliamentarian Abigail
Douglas met over the summer to further put their plans
into motion. On June 29th-July 1st the officer team
experienced a fun filled three day officer retreat, including a 2015-16 Chapter Officer Team
swim party and an exciting and cultural trip to the city of San Francisco. Throughout the
three day retreat as the officers got together not only was the upcoming school year planned,
but the team was able to grow and bond with each other as a team, united and ready to
serve! The team was also able to develop the theme for the upcoming year and as they
constructed the theme “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow, Friends Forever” they truly
summed up what they hope all members will gain through their FFA involvement. After all
the work was finished, the team was able to round out their time together with a fun filled,
cultural experience to San Francisco, traveling on the BART and then navigating the city
with little knowledge, making a stop in Chinatown before hitting Pier 39, and the aquarium.
The 2015-2016 chapter officer team is excited and ready to start off the year and cannot wait
for what is up ahead.

The 2015 Merced County Fair turned out to be nothing short of spectacular for the
Buhach Colony FFA. Each of the students involved not only learned so much about their
projects, but showed they knew there stuff with numerous awards and recognitions
throughout the week.
In total, thirteen students showed Dairy Cattle including Kelsey Coane, Lilia
Estrada, Erika Ewing, Hunter Gibson, Maggie Homen, Deena Migliazzo, Allie Neely,
Madison Homen, Austin Sherman, Corinne Sherman, McKenna Sherman, Cassie Smith,

Of those thirteen, ten showed and sold Replacement Heifers, with Deena Migliazzo

Malone, Macy Oh, Abigail Douglas, Michaela Clark, Cassidy Stone, Rose Sexaur, Macie
Harmon, Brittany Perry, Clayton Sardella, Camille Silvera and Corinne Sherman were hard at
work and really brought home the blue! Not only was our chapter awarded 1st place Market

exhibited the FFA Champion Goat which was later named the overall Supreme Champion

Morgan Malone 4th. Finally, in the advanced division, BC FFA really made their presence

in the ring showing all 5 of the species, earning a 2nd place finish in that competition.
Across the grounds, the hog show team, with an impressive 30 members also represented
BC FFA very well. Shannon Stalnaker exhibited the Reserve Champion AOB (All Other Breed)
with her 251 pound Chester White hog. Cameron Lema also received recognition for his
Hampshire hog, being named the Reserve Champion Hamp. Overall, our chapter was awarded

Once again the Beef show team dominated not only being the largest group exhibiting
Beef cattle at the fair that week, but were able to take home numerous class winners and
championships. Scott Avila showed the Champion Angus Female and went on to win the
Supreme Champion Female. He also won pair of females and was 2nd in Advance
Showmanship. Michaela Clark exhibited the Reserve Champion FFA Steer and was 3rd in
Showmanship. Ross May earned the MMCA Herdsmanship Award and the Reserve MMCA
Outstanding Project award. Later that evening Ross went on to sell his heifer for $6,000.
Needless to say BC FFA was also
awarded 1st place Chapter Group.
Rounding out the livestock
show, the Sheep show team ended
with Joslyn Campos and Zach
Pisacco making it into the final champion drive selection but fell
just short of the FFA champion or reserve champion
title with some stiff competition. And finally in the
rabbit division, Garrett Groth and Alize Ortiz both
placed in Novice rabbit showmanship after two
grueling rounds. Garrett finished 3rd and Alize,
8th. In addition to that, Abigail Douglas was the 1st
high individual in the Freshman showmanship
division.
Not only are we proud of the livestock exhibitors at the Fair, but the Ag Mechanics exhibitors
as well. In the Ag Mechanics division, Dakota Boon exhibited a 10’ x 13’ Orchard float
taking home the Most Innovative/Original Project award. David Correia exhibited his 10’
Hydraulic Scraper that he had previously won Outstanding exhibit with at the Los Banos fair.
Finally in large project division, David Witt exhibited his 14’ Hydraulic Dump Utility Trailer
and was awarded with the Outstanding Welding award along with the Overall Outstanding
Exhibit. BC FFA also had numerous award winners with Wagon Wheel Porch Swings,
Benches, BBQ’s, and other miscellaneous small projects that were exhibited.

For Buhach Colony FFA, the livestock judging season may have ended in May, but our
judging team continued to build upon their evaluation skills long after the season was
over. Beginning in June, two of the BC FFA livestock judging members, Michaela Clark and
Abigail Douglas, had the opportunity to travel to Kansas to participate in the Kansas State
University Livestock Judging Camp. Both took part in different specie specific workshops,
judged live animals, and gave reasons to the Kansas State livestock judging team members
and coaches. Each received some awesome feedback and gained some valuable skills to help
them gain an edge in next year’s regular judging season, something each is looking forward
to!
Beyond that, the entire livestock judging team, consisting of Michaela Clark, Abigail
Douglas, Brittany Perry, Cassidy Stone, Madyson Paschall, Kilee Gillard and Kohl Bright was
also able to take part in an exciting and eventful two day livestock judging camp on August 67. hosted by the Fresno State livestock judging team at Modesto Junior College. Named
“California’s Best Livestock Judging Camp” it was a great hands on opportunity for the team
to practice together and learn from some of the industry leaders in the area. Day one was
largely classroom instruction as numerous professionals broke down specific information
about each specie including beef, sheep, swine and goats and in the end, the over 200
participants were served a fabulous dinner and given some time to socialize with others they
share a judging passion with. Day two started bright and early with a brief welcome, then nine
rounds of judging live animals, followed by an immediate critique from livestock breeders,
feed representatives and other industry professionals. The fun didn’t stop there though, upon
completion of the judging the advanced judging team members were put into an rotation and
gave four sets of reasons, a verbal justification to how they placed some of the given classes,
and the beginners were taken to a classroom and given instruction on how to properly put
together a set of reasons. The entire event proved to a success as each person left with a
refreshed approach to livestock judging and evaluation and are pumped to start the new year.
