Katie’s Cup Youth Regatta
In May 2009, 16-year-old Katie Hamlin of Daphne was diagnosed
with acute respiratory distress syndrome. She was transported by jet
to Children's of Alabama in Birmingham where doctors placed her
on the ECMO heart/lung bypass machine and she endured 7 long
months of treatment. She is a living miracle, but is still working on
her recovery. The regatta trophy was named "Katie's Cup" in her
honor. Funds raised from The Regatta will help critically ill and
injured children all over Alabama. More than 1800 patients were
treated last year from Mobile and Baldwin counties alone.
Al’s Activity Area
Al Guarisco of Daphne was born with a Congenital diaphragmatic
hernia. He has been a patient of Children's since he was 2 hours old
- having over 20 surgeries and procedures since 2001. He has been
placed on ECMO, has a synthetic diaphragm now and hears with a
cochlear ear implant. Despite all odds he survived it all and calls
Children's "his hospital". Al's Activity Area is our kids area and will
include a waterslide, art activities, games, snacks and a chance for
kids to paint a creation with blind Fairhope artist Ricky Trione!
