What a GREAT Trade Show!
Mary Beth Caldwell, Publisher, Apartment Finder
The G0 GREEN themed 2009 CIAA Trade Show and
Educational Seminars were packed with information on new
products and services to help your business. CIAA would like
to thank Anthony Santarelli the Co-Director of C-U Green
Business Association and Dr. Tim Lindsey with the
University of Illinois for providing important information
and tips on ways to go “green” with your properties. The
Vendor Trade Show offered numerous new products and
ideas from both national and local vendor members. Those
who attended had more than 30 chances to win prizes and
giveaways like the $200 cash from the Apartment Finder
Money Tree and the portable HD DVD player from Allied
Waste. Your CIAA vendor members are ready and willing to
provide you with the best products and services. The next
time you need anything for your properties please contact the
listed vendor members who participated in the 2009 Trade

ATTENTION: YOU ARE ABOUT
TO LOSE THE LIMITED
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION!
Randy Hughes, President
The Champaign County Assessors office has decided to NOT
honor the Limited Homestead Exemption that we have been
benefiting from for the last several years. They will allow the
exemption to stand for 2008 real estate tax bills (payable in
2009), but will not issue any more forms to be signed by the
tenants and owners (to qualify for future years). We will be
discussing this issue at our next general meeting on May 21st.
Please come and give us your input. We need to make a decision
as to what plan of action we (as an association) will take.

What’s in Your Can?
Carol Timms
Choose fluorescent flood lights rather than compact
fluorescent in your can lights. Fluorescent flood lights will
dissipate the heat that builds up in can lights resulting in
longer life for the bulb. The heat that builds up in can lights
wears out the ballasts in a standard CFL.
Discounted fluorescent flood lights are available through
Ameren’s Act on Energy program. You can order them online
at www.ActonEnergy.com for $3.50 each. Dimmable flood
lights are available for $7.50 each. You can also visit your
local hardware store and look for the Act on Energy display.

Shopping at the CIAA Trade Show
Carol Timms
Trade shows are great. They are like a big mall filled with
businesses who have thought only about You and Your
Needs. Also, everyone wants to talk with you, people give
you free stuff and there’s food. The recent CIAA Trade Show
was no exception.
There were two great presentations highlighting ways to save
money while going green. The C-U Green Business
Association sponsored a panel with representatives from the
cities of Champaign and Urbana, the University of Illinois
and the Regional Planning Commission. There was great
information that will save us money and provide money to
improve our properties. One tidbit in particular has the
potential to be huge for our industry. The Regional Planning
Commission manages the Weatherization Assistance
Program. They will conduct a free energy audit; install
energy efficient materials; and clean, tune and repair (if
necessary) your heating and cooling equipment. This
program is available to low income residents who make
$15,315 or less per year -does that sound like a graduate
student to you? To learn more, visit the Champaign County
Regional Planning Commission.
After the presentations, I strolled through the Trade Show
and visited with the over 30 vendors. Many were giving away
promotional material. I have to say my favorite was Busey
Bank’s Go Green With Busey canvas bag. It folds up and snaps
closed making it easy to carry with you on your shopping
adventures.
I didn’t just go for the give aways and the food. I also hoped
to learn about new products and services and I was not
disappointed. I was excited to learn that Jetz Laundry service
offers stackable washers and dryers which can be located in
individual units. Contracts can be either with the tenants or
the management.
Minuteman Printing was displaying a new product that
really captured my imagination. They offer free standing
displays with custom printed banners for under $200. Light
weight and easy to set up, these seem like a great option for
Quad Day, Trade Shows or even to put in the public areas of
apartment complexes to share seasonal information and
promotions.
Did you know that Springfield Electric will recycle your
CFLs now? I could go on and on. What were you most
excited by?
