Seniors And Little Ones Spread
Christmas Cheer At Neighborhood Center
Penn Wortman Senior Center was
looking a lot like Christmas on
Tuesday! The stockings were hung,
the tree was decorated – complete
with gift-wrapped presents - and
there was a festive spirit in the air. A
little competition added some
excitement to the day, when seniors
battled it out for first place in a
Christmas
Table
Decorating
Contest. No holiday celebration is
complete without music, and children from a local day care entertained revelers with Christmas carols and wished everyone a Merry
Christmas! The event was sponsored by Millennium Development.

Residents who live on East
52nd Street and Avenue L woke
up Saturday morning to the smell
of smoke – only to learn that a
neighbor’s house was on fire.
After a blaze tore through 64year-old Alma Crosby’s twostory house at about 10 a.m., firefighters spent over a half hour
battling flames.
Unfortunately, after extinguishing the fire, Crosby was
found in the basement of the
house – where officials believe
the fire started – and already died
of her injuries. Over 60 firefighters reportedly responded to the
smoky scene.
Crosby, a former nurse and
retired city worker, was reportedly blind, used a cane and lived by
herself. Various media reports
also stated that Crosby was somewhat of a loner and never sought
help from others. The  
 noted that neighbors
attempted to alert the woman by
banging on the front door of her
house, but it was too late – she
didn’t make it out of the burning
house alive.
Despite ongoing efforts to
raise awareness of how important
it is to have smoke detectors
installed, fire officials and politicians can’t seem to do enough to
get through to residents when it
comes to fire safety.
As of press time, the cause of
the Old Mill Basin fire remains
under investigation.

Footage Of Mill Basin Shooting Suspects Released

Police have a somewhat clear image of a suspect they believe is connected to the violence
that took place outside of Strike 10 Lanes,
which resulted in three people being shot on
December 12th .
Surveillance from inside and outside of the
bowling alley, located at 6161 Strickland
Avenue, shows a man walking around and then
leaving the local hangout shortly before the
shooting, which took place at 2:22 a.m.
According to police, the man fired several
rounds from a black semi-automatic handgun.
In addition to shattering the glass entrance door,
three people were hit – a 19-year-old male, who
was struck in his right and left feet, a 22-yearold male, who was shot in his right thigh, and a
20-year-old male, who suffered one gunshot
wound to his lower leg.
All three victims were taken to Brookdale
Hospital and survived their injuries. It’s still
unclear what led to the shooting and if a brawl
broke out outside of the establishment before
bullets began flying.
Meanwhile, the gunman remains at large and
police are still asking for the public’s help in
tracking down the violent thug. Anyone with
information on the shooting is asked to call the
NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by
logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at
www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their
tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All
calls are strictly confidential.

Canarsie Girl Scouts Win Top Honors

The Girl Scouts strive to lead by example
through helping their family, their friends, the
community and each other. In a special presentation held at P.S. 276’s auditorium last week,
scouts of Troops 2054, 2070, 2550 and 2811 were
recognized for their continuing efforts to uphold
that principle.
Troop leader Nicole Etienne called up the
scouts from each division - Daisies, Brownies,
Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors – to
receive badges earned throughout the year as well
as awards from the troop, the Girl Scouts and
local officials.
Girl Scout members are encouraged to join
and/or create projects, which will benefit their
communities. Those who complete 20 hours of
work are eligible for the Bronze Award. Silver
and Gold Award winners are required to complete
50 and 80 hours, respectively.
This year Etienne proudly proclaimed Troop
2811 Scout Kendra Williams had won a Gold
Award. During the time needed for the award,
Williams was able to make and donate over 200
hats to a hospital for premature babies.
“Kendra worked with local seniors to make all
the hats and even went to other scouts and taught
them how to crochet so they could help work on
the project,” stated Etienne. “She was amazing.”
Three other troop members took home the
highest honor for Cadettes – the Silver Award.
Aniya Francis worked with the NYPD to reach
out to teens and other local youth to warn of the
dangers of drug use and abuse. For students interested in working with animals, Arielle Etienne
and Leela Briggs helped create a guide for
careers in the field. The youngsters worked with
the Wildlife Conservation Society at Prospect
Park and the NY Aquarium to gather the information needed to complete the project for their
awards. The guide may also be used for Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lessons in schools.
In addition to the Gold and Silver Awards, all
four young ladies received certificates or citations from Senator Roxanne Persaud, Governor
Andrew Cuomo, Councilmen Alan Maisel and
Jumaane Williams, and Brooklyn Borough
President Eric Adams. Williams, who received a
framed certificate signifying the Gold Award
win, will receive the official award at a reception
held in May by the Girl Scout Council of Greater
New York.
The event at P.S. 276 was also a chance for
new and returning scouts to be sworn in for 2016.

A rash of gun violence took place
within 24 hours over the weekend.
Coincidentally, two shootings took
place only a few miles away from
each other – and the same scenario
seemed to play out: the shooting
victims were sitting in their luxury
vehicles when they were targeted.
The first incident was a double
shooting that took place in Canarsie
at East 96th Street near Avenue N
Friday night. A couple sitting inside
a dark red or black Mercedes was
approached by a gunman who fired
several rounds at them. Reports
stated that the man, 25, and the
woman, 23, survived gunshot
wounds to the face and body. Both
victims were taken to Brookdale
Hospital as police investigated the
car – finding several shell casings

on the street.
There is no description of the
armed thug – who ran from the
scene in an unknown direction.
A similar shooting took place
about three miles away from our
community near Dean Street and
Schenectady Avenue at 4 p.m. on
Saturday. However, the shooting
victim didn’t survive the senseless
barrage of bullets.
A 22-year-old who was sitting in
his Infiniti was allegedly shot by a
masked man. According to witnesses and police reports, the victim,
identified as Sean Alexander Peart,
was in his parked car when a man
pulled up alongside him. The man
got out and fired several shots at
Peart’s vehicle. Peart was shot several times in the chest and died on
the way to Interfaith Hospital.
A fed-up resident contacted the Canarsie Courier this week to vent
her frustration about the filthy trash that’s piled up outside Chase
Bank, located on the corner of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue L.
Although there aren’t any trash receptacles on the corner of the commercial strip, that’s no excuse for people to ‘deposit’ their garbage
wherever they feel like – especially in the empty planters they’re turning into garbage bins! The Canarsie resident contacted the local bank
branch but was told there was nothing they could do to rectify the
problem. That just doesn’t make ‘cents’! Is there a lot or street piled
up with trash or other bulky debris? Call the Canarsie Courier at
718-257-0600 and, in an effort to resolve the problem and bring
it to the public’s attention, we might feature the unsightly mess
in our next issue!

Anaya Lee Willabus, Brooklyn’s
youngest published author, started reading
when she was two years old. She’s a frequent visitor to the Mill Basin Library but
never dreamed her chapter book, “The
Day Mohan Found His Confidence,”
which she penned when she was 8, would
find its way onto the shelves of the library
she loves - and where she spent so much
of her childhood reading. On Saturday,
that dream became a reality at a book
signing and press conference, where the
announcement was made that her book is
now available for everyone to borrow
from the Mill Basin Library, 2385 Ralph
Avenue, and Brooklyn’s Central Library at
Grand Army Plaza.
The goal-oriented author’s family hails
from Guyana - where she got her inspiration for the book about a young boy
named Mohan who faces challenges at
both home and school.
Since her book was released on June
1st, over 3,000 books were sold. Many
books were gobbled up by the Guyanese
government and are available in schools
throughout the country - and at their only
library. This summer, Anaya, who is a
fourth grade student at P.S.236, received a
personal invitation by Guyanese dignitaries to visit their country. While there,
she had the opportunity to meet the First
Lady and offer words of encouragement to
many people of all ages.
Locally, she has the support of her family and Mill Basin librarians, Victoria Hill
and Ann Lautner, who couldn’t be more
proud of her. State Senator Roxanne
Persaud, who is also Guyanese, and
Councilman Alan Maisel are strong supporters of the 9-year-old Mill Basin student.
Anaya told the   that
Councilman Maisel would love to see
more books about Mohan, with a focus on
anti-bullying. “I’m thinking about a
Mohan series and/or an autobiographical
book,” the inspiring author said.

It’s The Most Deadliest Time Of The Year
Telling It
Like It Is
By Dara Mormile
erry Christmas everyone! Happy holidays
and however else you want to accept
greetings! What’s the best gift of all –
according to the city? If you ask the NYPD, it’s
probably their Citywide Holiday Pedestrian Safety
Initiative, which was released (wrapped up all nice
and neat as a PDF file for those who are on the
NYPD’s e-mailing list) on Monday, December
14th. Thanks Commissioner Bratton! I love receiving the gift of knowledge that your officers will
work extra harder to “prevent” accidents! Wait…Is
this also the gift of   for drivers?
Hmmm…
The Holiday Pedestrian Safety Initiative, according to the NYPD, focuses more on areas surrounding senior centers throughout the city. Since the initiative ended on Sunday, December 20th, this was
only a temporary “gift” to a permanent problem.
Officers reportedly focused on seven Vision Zero
violations, which includes failure to yield to pedestrians and moving violations.
In the NYPD press release, they noted:
“      
       
  
.”
An “abundance” of caution??
Happy holidays to all of the drunk drivers – and
all of the hooligans who are operating a vehicle
without a license – or, hey, a suspended license!
M
“Proactive enforcement” will surely stop those
reckless road warriors from destroying someone’s
holidays! Putting more enforcement on the streets
is really supposed to deter someone dangerous from
getting into their vehicle?
GIVE ME A BREAK!
The NYPD doesn’t pick up local newspapers
like the   to know that Mayor de
Blasio’s Vision Zero (or Zero Vision as I like to call
it) isn’t working for the city in small communities
– where hit-and-run accidents are  rampant and
speeding drivers  mow over pedestrians while
blowing red lights. City officials are too busy shuffling through doctored-up accident reports filed by
traffic safety units who turn in statistics that might
not reveal the raw story behind the collision.
Why are they saying that “   
       
       
”? Where are they getting this flimsy information from – their “hidden” files and dumbeddown reports that lack photos of bodies collapsed
in the middle of the road?
Let’s get real! Just because there aren’t “fatalities” or deaths following the car accidents, it doesn’t mean that safety conditions on our roads have
improved! How about those who are paralyzed forever as a result of an accident? How about those
who have lost limbs? Someone’s carelessness –
perhaps even their own – led to a complete life
change that the NYPD doesn’t have in their “files!”
The city will come up with any reason to make it
look like their efforts are stronger and more forceful… Oh, that’s right – it’s the holidays! Watch out,
traffic enforcement will be watching you now more
than ever! Well, okay, they were only watching for
six days during the month – but they still can’t pro-
vide drivers and pedestrians with the brains, skills
and patience needed to prevent vehicles from flipping over or ramming into a crowd at a bus stop.
It’s not going to stop someone from walking out
into the middle of street when they think the road is
clear – and it’s not going to prevent those badasses
who love to ride their motorcycles from racing up
and down Rockaway Parkway.
Sure, I can agree on the fact that the holidays are
a more hectic time of year – people are more
stressed out and erratic. I’m not quite sure about
senior centers seeing more action when it comes to
car accidents, but creating a “safe environment”
takes more than implementing fines or targeting
“high trafficked” areas for one week.
In our community, there are streets and avenues
with repeat offenders – speeding up and down
Remsen Avenue or Rockaway Parkway. These thoroughfares constantly see dangerous drivers – and
there’s never enforcement around when they’re
needed! Traffic cops will hang around for a few
hours and days at a time to say they “honed in” on
the troubled spots in an attempt to study and crack
down on hazardous traffic conditions.
The gift of safety is great! But so is the gift of a
functioning brain and “decent” individuals who
refuse to operate a vehicle when they’re drunk or
don’t have a valid license. There’s no such thing as
the gift of common sense – unfortunately – and
that’s something more people can use ALL the
time, not just during the holidays.

their gadgets – a luxury less fortunate children can’t enjoy. Many of
Bildersee’s students reside in shelters, which may come as a surprise
to some youngsters at the school. A
little over 40 children made the trip
to the shelter to assist with the special delivery.

Bikes, Buses And Automobiles Discussed At CB18 Meeting

Various transportation issues – including everything from traffic lights to buses and bike lanes - and
the conversion of the old “Reds” warehouse into a
dormitory, were on the Community Board 18’s
(CB18) agenda during the final meeting of the year.
CB18 District Manager Dorothy Turano said that
the board has been trying to get an additional traffic
light on Flatbush Avenue, between Avenue V and the
Belt Parkway, for quite some time.
“We need another break in traffic along that
strip,” she said. “We have the Marine Park Golf
Course, Nick’s Lobster, beach traffic and Floyd
Bennett Field – it’s treacherous!”
Turano said that board member Paul Curiale
recently reactivated the study and sent another letter
to the Department of Transportation (DOT) to
request the traffic light. She also said that the
January 2016 meeting would be very important
because a representative from the DOT will be
attending.
Still on the subject of Flatbush Avenue, Turano
said the DOT is planning a dedicated bike lane on
the roadway between Avenue V to the Marine
Parkway Bridge. It’s unclear if it would actually be
on the roadway or along the sidewalk, which runs on
the west side of the avenue and is seldom used by
pedestrians.
Another important reason to attend the January
meeting is the topic of the B82 bus. Turano stated if
the bus line becomes an SBS (Select Bus Service), it
would take away another traffic lane to be used by
buses only, similar to what has been done on Utica
and Nostrand avenues. “The B82 bus is the only
east/west route and runs all the way from Starrett
City to Bensonhurst,” Turano said. She also said it
joins six other bus lines, at one point, and she is not
in favor of the idea.
The District Manager said that an “As-of-Right”
project to convert the old Red’s warehouse on
Avenue V and Mill Avenue into a dormitory is nothing “but a ploy.”
A construction company wants to build a six-story
dorm. However, according to Turano, that dormitory would not be for the adjacent Hebrew Academy.
Any school throughout the city could use the rooms
and would need to sign a 10-year lease.
“These people have something else in mind. It
would be difficult to get a lease of that length from
any school,” Turano said. “It’s always for something
else. If they don’t get the lease, the contractors may
build some type of a community facility.” She told
residents there was no reason to be alarmed at this
point.
The next meeting of CB18 will be held on
Wednesday, January 20th at 8 p.m. at 1097 Bergen
Avenue.
WE WILL BE CLOSED CHRISTMAS DAY
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25TH.

California Shooting Prompts Ammo
Control Legislation In New York
“We cannot continue to sit back while
experiencing increasing acts of gun
violence,” said State Senator Roxanne
Persaud. “Limiting the quantity and
duration between purchases of ammunition is one step in preventing someone with criminal intent from easily
accessing large quantities of ammunition. By placing this barrier, we will
save lives.”
Her profound statement was released
not too long after new legislation on
ammunition control was publicized this
weekend. The local senator, along with
Brooklyn Borough President Eric
Adams and Assemblywoman Jo Anne
Simon, announced the state legislation
on ammunition control in an effort to
address a series of deadly mass shootings nationwide – which includes this
month’s terror attack in San Bernardino, where authorities have determined
that thousands of rounds were purchased
in the lead-up to the assault.
Adams, an NYPD veteran and key
figure in the passage of the NY Secure
Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act, worked alongside
Senator Persaud and Assemblywoman
Simon – the measure’s lead sponsors
– to craft the bills as they prepare for
the upcoming legislative session in Albany. Along with leading anti-gun violence advocates, they spoke about the
need for New York to be safer from
unchecked mass shooters.
“There is a duty to act, a responsibility to put public safety first, in the
face of the blood-soaked carnage of
mass shootings, made possible by the
calculated and unrestricted stockpiling
of thousands of deadly ammunition
rounds,” said Adams. “When terrorists seek – and succeed – to take advantage of our loose laws to murder
innocent people, it is clear we as a nation need to change course. Rational
ammunition control is something that
every New Yorker can agree on following San Bernardino, Colorado Springs,
and the hundreds of mass shootings that
have happened in America this year
alone.”

Senator Persaud, and Assemblywoman
Simon, Section 270.00 of the New York
State Penal Law would be amended to
prevent gun dealers from selling ammunition for a firearm to anyone unauthorized to have such a weapon, regardless
of the weapon type.
Under the current code, only pistols
and revolvers are specifically regulated,
creating a loophole for those seeking to
purchase ammunition for assault weapons. Penalty for the violation of this
law would also be increased from a Class
B misdemeanor, or not more than three
months in jail and not more than $500
in fines, to a Class E felony, or up to
four years in prison with a minimum of
one year. Additionally, the new measure
would create a cap on the amount of
ammunition that a person can purchase
over a period of 90 days, corresponding
to no more than twice the amount of
the capacity of the weapon.
“If I have a cold I can’t buy Sudafed
without ID, but I can walk into any gun
shop and walk out with enough bullets
to arm a small army without showing
any kind of ID,” said Assemblywoman
Simon. “I can buy any kind of bullets
regardless of what kind of gun I own.
I don’t even have to own a gun to stock
up on bullets. Nothing stops me from
having friends buy even more bullets
for me. The sky is the limit. The San
Bernardino shooters had 6,000 rounds
of ammunition. We need this legislation
so that cannot happen here.”

Councilman Maisel Protests Possible Overhaul Of B82 Route

In the East Flatbush community, residents have
already been impacted by the Select Bus Service
(SBS) that operates along the B44 route. While
politicians and commuters came out to change the
limited stop line, Canarsie residents may meet the
same traveling fate when it comes to the B82 line.
According to Councilman Alan Maisel, the MTA is
studying the line, which runs from East New
York/Starrett City to Gravesend and Coney Island.
Displeased with the fact that the Transportation
Department has even considered operating an SBS
along the B82 route, Maisel recently sent a letter to
Commissioner Polly Trottenberg – protesting the
proposal.
His letter to the commissioner reads as follows:

This Thug Wanted To
Be “Louisiana Fast”
An armed criminal wanted more than a fourpiece meal and a biscuit – but got away with nothing – when he tried to hold up a Popeyes fast food
joint on Tuesday, December 12th. According to
reports, the suspect went into the Popeyes, located
at 4930 Kings Highway, at around 10:45 p.m. Instead of simply ordering a meal, the 6’ tall punk
whipped out a black handgun and demanded money
from one of the employees – who ran away instead
of complying. Police said that the suspect was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt at the time of the
incident and that he fled the fried chicken franchise
without stealing anything. No one was injured –
but a surveillance image of the dangerous crook
was released to the public this week. Anyone with
information on the attempted robbery is asked to
call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by
logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at

Mall Suicides And Violence Clarified At Community Board Meeting

The most wonderful time of the year is not merry
and bright for everyone. At last week’s Community
Board 18 meeting, Community Affairs officer with
the 63rd Precinct Ronette Benjamin explained that
suicides increase during the holidays, and it’s not
uncommon for distraught people to jump to their
deaths.
The    published a story last week
(
  about a 20-year-old man that was shot
multiple times in Georgetown on December 15th.
Benjamin explained that the man was not a shooting
victim. Apparently, the unidentified man was visiting his ex-wife at a residence on Bergen Avenue
when he jumped out of the second-floor window.
It’s unclear what transpired while he was in the
apartment. He made his way to Ralph Avenue,
where he collapsed in front of the nearby Citibank.
Two other people plummeted to their deaths – in
separate incidents - at Kings Plaza Mall on
December 4th (see     

Bruce Circulnick, a 60-year-old white man,
Benjamin said, was drinking a cup of coffee while
on the fifth level of the Sears parking garage.
“Around 3:37 p.m., he finished his coffee, threw it
out, walked over to the edge of the garage and then
jumped off the roof,” she said.
“At 6:42 p.m. on the same day, a 60-year-old
black man, Sam Braithwaite, drove up to the same
level of the Sears garage, opened his car door and
jumped off the ledge of the parking lot,” the community affairs officer told residents. “He landed
two inches from the man who jumped three hours
earlier.”
Although there is no evidence linking both men
in the tragic events, Benjamin said it appears very
strange and it’s likely that the incidents could be
connected. She also said that both men landed on
the concrete near the Kings Plaza Marina.
Three young men were shot while standing outside of the Strike 10 Lanes on Strickland Avenue
around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 12th (see

Benjamin, there was an argument inside the bowling
alley, and the bouncer told the troublemakers to
leave the establishment. The suspects went to a car
– apparently to retrieve a gun - and someone heard
one of them say, ‘Get the brick.’
“They were randomly shooting at people outside
the bowling alley. We’re not even sure if any of the
three victims – ages 19, 20 and 22 were involved in
the argument,” Benjamin said. “One male that was
shot had an outstanding warrant. He was subsequently arrested.” The suspects are still on the
loose.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers
Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers

Week 3 PSAL Local Basketball Round-Up
By Jerry Del Priore
Week 3 saw two of the three teams split its
respective games while the other picked up a victory in its lone affair, with games played up to press
time on Tuesday afternoon.
Canarsie Boys
Second place Canarsie won its game during the
week to help it stay a game ahead of Erasmus Hall
Campus in the Brooklyn A Southeast Conference.
Junior forward Tyres Desinor paced the Chiefs (52) with a contest-high 25 points and 13 rebounds
while senior guard Nathaniel McPherson added 13
in their 54-39 win over visiting Lafayette last week.
Tilden Educational Campus Boys
The Blue Devils (6-2) went 1-1 during the week
to help it maintain their second place position in the
Brooklyn B South Conference. Tilden ended the
week by falling short to Uncommon Charter High
School by a score of 56-54 Monday night on the road.
However, earlier in the week, the Blue Devils
edged Teachers Preparatory HS/FDA VII (4-4), 48-47.
Blue Devils junior point/shooting guard Kamar Gowie
led all scorers with 19 points and senior small forward
Jade Spencer added 11. Power forward Fred David
provided the muscle, grabbing 11 boards in the tilt.
East New York Family Academy Boys
ENYFA posted a 1-1 record during the week, but
are still three games behind Uncommon Charter, who
are 8-0 in the Brooklyn B East Division. The Eagles
(5-3) used three players, who all scored in double
digits, to topple Leon M Goldstein HS for Science
(5-3), 65-54, at home Monday night. Junior Donald
Semple drained a game-leading 22 points for ENYFA
while seniors Elisa Bennet and Malcolm Allen contributed, 19 and 14, respectively. Allen also snatched
14 rebounds in the victory.
The first contest of the week saw host Sunset Park
(4-4) ground the Eagles by the score of 72-57 last
Friday. Bennet had another solid game, dropping
in 22 points while Allen added 15 in the defeat.

Santa’s Sleigh Lands In East Flatbush
Councilman Jumanne Williams wants to make sure
every child in the 45th District has a Merry Christmas. That’s why he holds an annual toy drive at his
District Office during December. The response is
always great, and the donations were distributed to
underprivileged kids at his Community Holiday Party,
which was held at P.S. 109, 1001 East 45th Street,

where hundreds of toys put a smile on all the kids’
faces. A DJ, refreshments and a dance performance by the East Village Step Team added to the
festive event.

Beep Spreads Toys And Cheer To Some Lucky Children
‘Santa Claus’ made a special delivery to Borough
Hall – a little earlier than expected! Brooklyn
Borough President Eric Adams was excited last
Thursday morning to find hundreds of gifts by the
Christmas tree in the rotunda of Borough Hall –
and he knew he had to share the wealth with
hundreds of underserved children. During the
special distribution, BP Adams spoke about the
importance of generosity during the holidays and
how crucial it is to support families struggling to
make ends meet. In addition to Old Saint Nick –
who was unable to attend the prestigious event –
toys were donated from over 30 toy drives held at
local businesses, cultural institutions and schools
all over Brooklyn.

CEC18 Holds First Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament
By Jason Linetsky
In the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship,
Community Education Council 18 (CEC18) held its
1st Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament on Saturday. Co-ed teams from public schools 114, 276,
279 and Cultural Arts Academy (CAA) entered P.S.
279’s gym to play in the one-day competition with
many parents and siblings watching all the action.
“It’s a great thing for kids to have recreation on a
Saturday,” said CEC18 President James Dandridge.
“It’s also great for parents to have a chance to come
out and support their kids.”
Dandridge cited councilmembers Alan Maisel and

P.S. 276 and P.S. 279 started the competition with
a scoring blitz by P.S. 276’s Josiah Clarke, bringing
his team to a first half lead 7-3. However, P.S. 279
took over in the second half led by Mark Luis, who
gave them the lead with just over four minutes left
in the game. Keyvion Jones-Allen and Justyce Cesar
joined Luis to take P.S. 279 to the win 18-7.
The second match-up featured P.S. 114 and CAA in
a very physical game. Both teams traded fouls throughout the first half and kept the scoring close, going to
halftime with P.S. 114 leading 8-6. P.S. 114 came back
out to go on a scoring streak, knocking down three
baskets and a free throw to take a commanding lead
15-6. They were able to hold off a comeback attempt
by CAA’s Gabriel Brown and Karsten Spencer to win
18-11.
P.S. 276 and CAA came to the court for their consolation game next and P.S. 276 immediately showed
their desire to rebound from their loss to P.S. 279.

Elaborate Displays Light The Way For Santa Claus
When it comes to making spirits bright, there are hundreds of houses in our community that radiate the warmth of the holidays. From
Canarsie to Old Mill Basin to Marine Park – homes all over are strewn with sparkling lights, lawn decorations and festive figurines that come
to life every night. A recent tour of the community revealed a plethora of decorations – from the most elegant to the most simple arrangement of lights and bows. With many staircase railings adorned with candy cane striped light strings and “North Pole” signs welcoming Old
St. Nick, there is certainly no shortage of holiday cheer! You may see and purchase more photos from the event by visiting www.canarsiecourier.com. Just click on the blue button.

Vaccines are an important part of planning and
having a healthy pregnancy. If you are planning a
pregnancy, check with your doctor to make sure you
are up-to-date on your vaccines. If you are currently
pregnant, doctors and midwives recommend you receive two vaccines during your pregnancy:
•Tdap to help protect against whooping cough, and
•The flu shot to help protect against influenza.
Thinking about having a baby?
If you are in the pregnancy planning stages, you
may need to receive some vaccines. Your doctor
may need to give you vaccines several weeks before
you become pregnant because it could take a while
for your body to build up disease protection (immunity) after getting the vaccine. Some vaccine-preventable diseases, such as rubella, can lead to serious
complications, including birth defects. You can't get
the vaccine to prevent rubella if you are currently
pregnant. Therefore, planning ahead is very important.
During your pregnancy, you should receive vaccines against both the flu (if you haven't already received the vaccine during the current flu season) and
whooping cough (pertussis). These vaccines not only
protect you by preventing illnesses and complications, but they also pass on some protection to your
unborn child.

It’s A Holly Jolly Christmas For Some Local Children
Santa and his elves made an appearance at the 69th Precinct stationhouse, 9720 Foster Avenue, on Saturday at the Community Council’s annual toy drive. Santa’s helpers - along with community leaders, elected officials and other volunteers - handed out goodies to hundreds of children
to make their holiday jolly and bright. From electronics to stuffed toys and games, everyone received something fun. State Senator Roxanne

Donations Roll In At Democratic Club Toy Drive
The 41st Assembly District Democrats Club did it again!
The esteemed club holds an annual Toys for Tots drive,
where thousands of toys are collected and donated to
needy children. Now in their 12th year, they’ve hit a
major milestone. The club has donated over 60,000
toys, thanks to donations by area residents. District
Leader Lew Fidler and Assemblywoman Helene
Weinstein sponsored the drive and, on Thursday,
December 17th, joined members of the community and
elected officials, including Councilman Vincent J.
Gentile, at the Democratic Club’s headquarters, 2952
Avenue R, to accept donations and enjoy light refreshments. As of last week’s count, 2,715 toys were collected but more toys are coming in! Brooklyn Cyclones
mascot Sandy the Seagull made an appearance, and
members of the U.S. Marine Corps loaded toys into
their trucks for delivery. You may see and purchase

Governor Needs To Get With The Program

As educators, we are always looking
for ways to empower our youth. I came
across a wonderful quote that really
gives meaning to the word ‘educate’:
“If a child can’t learn the way we teach,
maybe we should teach the way they
learn” – Michael J. Fox
Think about it! Instead of Governor
Cuomo trying to fix Common Core
learning, I would recommend the Governor find out the needs and wants of
our students who really want to learn.
The ‘One Size Fits All’ and the ‘Master
Key’ to unlocking the minds of our students doesn’t work.
As an educator and community education advocate in Brooklyn, I know
that all students learn differently. First
of all, you have verbal-linguistic word
smart learners. These students learn
best through reading, writing, listening,
and speaking. Next, you have the logical-mathematical logic smart learners.
These students learn best by classifying, categorizing and thinking abstractly
about patterns and numbers.
Then, we have the visual-spatial picture smart learners who excel at draw-
ing and visualizing things. After that,
we have the auditory-musical students
who thrive on singing and listening to
music. Next, we have the bodily-kinesthetic learners that do extremely well
when they work with their hands. Then,
we have the interpersonal learners who
learn through relating to others and
sharing ideas. Next, you will see your
intrapersonal-intelligent students who
work best alone and setting up their
own goals. Finally, let’s talk about the
naturalistic learners who love working
with nature. These students excel in the
sciences and are very passionate about
our environment.
It’s all about connecting with your
students and finding out what works
for them.
I would recommend that Governor
Cuomo focus on bringing back local
school boards. Our local school boards
had a better snapshot on the needs and
wants of their district schools. Next, I
would work to improve our Community
Education Councils. We need educators
on the council board that have a pulse on
what is happening in our schools. Then,
we need to showcase all the great work
that our students are doing in school.
We can do it together, Governor
Cuomo!

Everyone’s got a little secret – and on Christmas, some secrets are the best surprise! An amazing
event was held on Saturday, December 19th, at I.S. 211 where gifts were distributed to some lucky
students. The annual “Secret Santa” event was hosted in collaboration with Samaritan Homeless
Interim Services (SHIP) under the auspices of Tom Oleary and Marion Goldberg. There were raffles
and giveaways such as turkeys, hams, gift baskets, a turkey platter and $100 in cash. Principal
Carolyn James was very supportive in allowing Catherine Letren, guidance counselor at the East
101st Street school, to organize this major event for the past seven years. Charlene Mitchell,
manager of temporary housing for District 18, along with Marsha Friday, Attendance Manager of
District 18 – took part in the morning’s festivities. Canarsie families are truly appreciative of the
donations provided by the organizations to the I.S. 211 family.

over the phone.
Each Saturday at the 8:10 A.M Mass we will celebrate the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Let’s have
a deeper understanding of this healing sacrament. It is
not Last Rites, at the moment of death. As Jesus ministered to the sick, so does the Church. It is for anyone who
is seriously sick. So it is intended for those with an ongoing condition (Cancer, Sickle Cell, Asthma etc.) those
who are going into hospital during the month for an operation, elderly whose health is slipping and for those
with a mental illness like depression.

CELEBRATING OVER 75 YEARS
IN THE MILL BASIN COMMUNITY

“COME LET US WORSHIP THE LORD TOGETHER”
“I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into
the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122:1)
Kingslawn Presbyterian Church - the first Church
within the Presbytery of New York City to commission a Ruling Elder as Pastor, Peter Parris, CRE. We
are conveniently located in the heart of Mill Basin,
at 2368 Ralph Avenue between Avenues M and N and
our church is easily accessible by car or the B41 or
B47 buses. We are a growing church and we have exciting programs, including plans for an upcoming
food pantry, that will enlighten anyone who enters our
doors.
Come visit us and be a part of our church family
which includes our fastest growing group of children
and young adults. We encourage you to bring family
members and friends and come see why the history
that started over 75 years ago continues today.
“We've Come This Far By Faith” and “Faith is the
Victory”.
At Kingslawn Church, we are always exploring
new ways to broaden our outreach in the community
as well as our Evangelical mission. During the upcoming Harvest Thanksgiving season we will bring
our gifts of fruits and vegetables to the table and give
heartfelt thanks for God's continued grace.
As the Season of Advent approaches, we look to
that time with renewed hope and like eager children,
we wait for the season of Christmas to unfold, and
more so to celebrate the birth of Jesus and his presence in our lives. We invite you to join us for the following services and special events.

A Break From Business With The 69th Precinct Community Council

Residents come to the 69th Precinct
Community Council meetings just about every
month to air their grievances about a wide range of
issues. However, the organization took a break
from its usual business to host its annual holiday
party Friday night at the Thomas Jefferson
Democratic Club, where awards were generously
doled out – along with food and plenty of drinks!
During the shindig, longstanding council members Mary Salogub, Henderson Wint and Julian
Blackburn were acknowledged for their service in
an award presentation led by the council’s
President Gardy Brazela. Brazela, Melba Brown,
District Leader for the 58th Assembly District, and
the precinct’s commanding officer Deputy
Inspector Norman Grandstaff, handed out plaques
to the dedicated members.
Brazela and the board were also applauded for
their accomplishments throughout 2015, including:
•Obtaining Tax Exempt Status to allow for the
acceptance of donations.
•Holding their 1st Annual Fundraising Gala
•Organizing a march against crime
•Hosting a job fair
•Offering a free summer youth basketball program and theater program
•Providing a full Thanksgiving dinner
•Setting up social media accounts on Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter
Brazela also announced the council’s plans for
2016 – including expanding their basketball and
theater programs, continuing to hold job fairs and
creating a program to address teen pregnancy and
HIV prevention.

December was a busy time for residents and staff at Four Seasons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 1555 Rockaway Parkway, with
Christmas parties, concerts, holiday bake-offs and a visit by jolly ole’ Santa Claus. At this year’s Holiday Concert, residents and family members were entertained with a special rendition of “The 12 Days of Therapy” performed by the Rehab Department. Students from P.S. 115
also visited the center to share stories, sing and create beautiful holiday cards with residents. DJs supplied festive music, and delicious
snacks and eggnog were served to make the holidays merry and bright for everyone at Four Seasons.

Canarsie Investor Apologizes, Pleads Guilty To Securities Fraud
Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the
Southern District of New York, and Diego Rodriguez, the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New
York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), recently announced the filing of an
Information against Owen Li, charging him with
securities fraud and making a false statement, stemming from Li’s lies to investors and the U.S. Securities
and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) regarding the
performance of Canarsie Capital, LLC – “Canarsie”
a hedge fund Li had founded and for which he acted
as portfolio manager which collapsed in January
2015. LI surrendered on December 16th and pled
guilty to the charges after the filing of the Information.
Li, 29, pled guilty to one count of securities fraud
and one count of making a false statement. Count
One carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in
prison. Count Two carries a maximum sentence of
five years in prison. The charges also carry a maximum fine of $5 million, or twice the gross gain or
loss from the offense.
In a separate action, the SEC announced civil
charges against Li and Canarsie.
“As Owen Li has now admitted, he lied to his
investors and lied to the SEC. His conduct led to
crippling losses for his fund and its investors. Crimes
like Owen Li’s taint the entire marketplace and
make honest investors wary of investing in securities markets. Thanks to the investigative efforts of
the FBI in collaboration with the SEC, Li will be
held to account for his deception,”U.S. Attorney
Preet Bharara said.
According to the two-count Information filed in
Manhattan federal court, Li founded Canarsie Capital, LLC in January 2013 with approximately 10
investors and $16.55 million in assets under management. By the end of 2013, Canarsie had approx-
imately $47.75 million in assets under management,
and Li earned over $2.2 million that year. Li raised
another $16.8 million in 2014, and at the time of its
collapse in January 2015, Canarsie had approximately 41 investors and $56.8 million in assets under
management.
At or around the end of each month, Li and others
prepared and sent e-mails to Canarsie’s investors
describing the fund’s performance. Those e-mails
contained an estimated net asset value (“NAV”)
and monthly return. Li repeatedly delayed monthly statements and reported materially different
NAVs to his investors.
He lied to administrators that he was in the hospital for a week and falsely told investors statements
were late because of “staffing changes,” among other
fabrications. Li also concealed information from investors about trading and losses and reported fictitious trades to his prime broker.
