Crabs Need A Clean Beach Too!
By Linda Steinmuller
It’s spring, and it’s time to do some
spring cleaning! Besides cleaning
out your garage, our local beaches
need some help too! Plumb Beach,
located off the Belt Parkway near
Sheepshead Bay, needs extra
cleaning as it’s expecting some
house guests soon. Each May,
horseshoe crabs come ashore to
lay their eggs, providing food for
migrating shorebirds.
NYC
Audubon has conducted a study on
crab population since 2009. On
Saturday, the organization, which
helps protect wild birds and habitat
in the five boroughs, organized a
cleanup, in partnership with
Gateway National Park, to welcome
the crabs. About 55 volunteers
picked up all sorts of junk, including
needles, an old tire, a beach
umbrella, Styrofoam and a lot of
“plastic pollution.” NYC Audubon
Program and Outreach Manager
Darren Klein said plastic bags are
particularly hazardous for marine
life and sea birds, who often get
entangled in the bags. Thanks to
the dedicated volunteers, large
amounts of litter and debris were
collected at the beach cleanup,
which took place one day after
Earth Day.

Rockaway Parkway Declared One Of The Worst Traffic Corridors In Brooklyn

Everyone knows Rockaway Parkway is a dangerous corridor. Motorists speed up and down the roadway, and it’s been the site of numerous car and
motorcycle accidents – some fatal - over the years.
It’s not easy for pedestrians either. Crossing the
busy thoroughfare can be a challenge, especially for
seniors, and some have lost their lives in the process.
The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) has
a plan to improve safety along Rockaway Parkway,
which was outlined at last week’s Community Board
18 (CB18) meeting.
It’s all part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero
plan to reduce traffic fatalities in NYC. A Safety
Action Plan for each borough was released in 2015,
and priority corridors and intersections were identified in each borough.
•Rockaway Parkway, between Flatlands and
Seaview avenues, was identified as a Priority
Corridor. The corridor is just under one-mile long.
•Rockaway Parkway and Flatlands Avenue was
identified as a Priority Intersection.
Kessia Deleo, DOT Project Presenter, revealed
shocking statistics to residents at the April 20th
meeting and offered solutions to implement safety
improvements on Rockaway Parkway.
Over a five–year period, between 2010 and 2014,
there were a total of 409 injuries on the 0.9-mile
Rockaway Parkway corridor. Motor vehicle occupants accounted for the majority of those injuries –
totaling 340 – followed by pedestrians, accounting
for 63 injuries, and bicyclists numbering six. Three
injuries resulted in fatalities. Of the 409 injuries,
there were 23 KSIs (persons killed or severely
injured).
There were two additional fatalities since the
study was released, totaling five deaths between
2010 and April 11, 2016. As of press time, a pedestrian succumbed to her injuries almost four months
after being struck on Rockaway Parkway and
Avenue N on December 31, 2015. See 
     
 on page 6.
The disturbing data reveals that something has to
be done - and quickly. Rockaway Parkway is one of
the 10 worst corridors for pedestrian KSIs in
Brooklyn.
While all of the intersections reported a high
number of injuries, Rockaway Parkway and
Flatlands Avenue has the most – a total of 84 – but
Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J has the most fatalities – a total of three.
Speeding is rampart near Canarsie High School,
between avenues J and K. Statistics show that 92
percent of motorists speed while traveling northbound and 85 percent speed while going southbound
on Rockaway Parkway.
The data also states that most pedestrians were hit
while crossing with the “Walk” signal, and left-hand
crashes are the most common motor vehicle crash
type.
Deleo said pedestrian safety islands will be added
at each intersection to shorten crossing distance, and
left-turn lanes will help organize traffic better and
create safer turns.
Improvements also include upgrading all crosswalks with high-visibility markings and installing
parking lane strips to discourage speeding and create
standard width travel lanes.
To improve conditions on Avenue J, pedestrians
will be given a head start before vehicles get the
green light by installing LPI (leading pedestrian
interval) at the crosswalk.
According to DOT Press Secretary Jose Bayona,
“NYC DOT plans to start implementation this summer and expects to complete the safety improvements by this fall. We expect minimal impacts to
traffic as a result of the construction.”
The next meeting of CB18 will be held on
Wednesday, May 18th at 8 p.m. at 1097 Bergen
Avenue.

“Troubled Corner” Blessed By Canarsie's Spiritual Leaders

If you ask many Canarsie residents
where they feel the least safe, they
may say it’s near Rockaway Parkway
and Seaview Avenue. The southeast
corner of the intersection, where
many youths and “shady” people hang
out, seems to need the most attention
– and since most of the residents who
frequent that corner live in Bayview
Houses, it was fitting that the 69th
Precinct Clergy Council bring signs of
peace to the location that's always
been considered “troubled.”
The 69th Precinct Clergy will be
congregating at a different location
each month where prayer is needed
and where families need the most support. Since Bayview Houses is reportedly one of Canarsie's hotspots for
criminal activity, spiritual leaders
gathered near the project to pray for
youths and families.
State Senator Roxanne Persaud
also offered words of peace and hopes
that the clergy's presence at the location brings awareness to the changes
that must be made.
“I commend the Clergy Council for
doing this – because our community
needs prayer,” Persaud said. “When
our community is touched by the hand
of God, it becomes a better community. And today at this corner we're
standing on, it's a corner that desperately needs the hand of God. To
everyone who's hearing us, we're asking the hand of God to touch all of
you so that this corner can become
better. This corner is going to be lifted
up."
While Rev. Moonsam and other
clergy members didn't take to the
streets and did not go on the grounds
of the Bayview Houses, many were
glad that the spiritual leaders showed
a presence in the area.
Deputy Inspector Frank Giordano,
commanding officer of the 69th
Precinct, thanked Rev. Moonsam for
bringing prayer services to the community.
"I can't tell you how great it is that
we have clergy members reaching out
to residents," he said. "Rev. Moonsam
is doing a great job connecting
Canarsiens and the precinct in hopes
of a safer neighborhood."
One of the most recent tragedies
that struck Bayview Houses was on
March 14th when Amani Miller, 23,
was shot several times on the fifth
floor in the middle of the day inside of
2125 Rockaway Parkway. Miller was
a Bedford-Stuyvesant resident who
was well liked and many could not
justify his murder. A vigil was held for
Miller days after the shooting, and
police are still on the hunt for his
killer or killers.
The next prayer vigil hosted by the
69th Precinct Clergy Council is slated
to take place at the end of May near
the “L” train station at Rockaway
Parkway between Glenwood and
Farragut roads.

Spirit Of Life Holds 15th Annual Walkathon In Bergen Beach

On a beautiful sun-kissed Saturday afternoon,
family, friends and people from all over Bergen
Beach and beyond gathered to celebrate the memory
of Tommy Meo Jr. at the 15th Annual Spirit of Life
Walkathon at Joseph T. McGuire Park in Bergen
Beach.
Tommy was a 12-year-old boy who was tragically killed in an accident on September 22, 2000.
Every year, the close-knit Bergen Beach community gathers to pay tribute to the young boy’s selfless, giving spirit, his dedication to sports and gift
for loving life and people way beyond his youthful
age.
“Tommy Meo Jr. was an active youth sports participant,” said Paul Curiale, executive director of
Millennium Development and administrator for
Bergen Beach Youth Organization, which Meo Jr.
played multiple organized sports through.
“Probably, over the course of my tenure here, 24
years, Tommy was one of the most intense, athletically gifted kids and had just an incredible personality.”
Spirit of Life is a non-profit organization started
by the Meo family shortly after Tommy’s passing,
dedicated in helping the less fortunate. Through the
walkathon’s fundraising efforts, the organization has
been able to use the monies it collects to directly
help families and children in need.
“This year, we’re helping an organization called
SOARD, which stands for Sunshine on a Ranney
Day,” explained Gina Gampero, one of Tommy’s
three sisters. “It’s a charity that does dream room
makeovers. This is the third year that we’re sponsoring a bedroom makeover. This year, it’s a 14-yearold boy with Down Syndrome.”
But the philanthropy doesn’t stop there. Spirit of
Life—in conjunction with Gianna Nicole’s Heart of
Hope Foundation, a Staten Island-based charity that
helps children battle cancer—is also lending a help-

Lymphoma.
“For my family, we took such a negative experience, and we see how much positive that we made
from it,” Gampero said. “And for us, that’s rewarding. After 15 years, we still get the same great
crowd—new people and old people, people that didn’t even know us, and they’re meeting our brother
for the first time. For us, that’s the best part.”
This year’s walkathon event, which brought out
scores of smiling faces, also featured horse rides,
cartoon characters, a miniature racing track, music, a
slide, a bouncy house, mechanical rides and raffle
prizes donated by a number of local businesses.

Kingsbrook Physician Helps Rescue Worker At Construction Site Accident
Last Friday, Dr. Brian Yokers, a
Kingsbrook Jewish Medical
Center Emergency Physician,
helped rescue a construction
worker who fell 15 feet into a
hole on a construction site
located at East 49th Street and
Rutland Road. Without hesitation, Dr. Yokers climbed into the
hole to assist the fallen worker
and was able to help stabilize
and safely remove him, along
with FDNY workers. His urgent

all the difference to the worker
who was transferred to a neighboring medical facility. When
praised for his heroic effort, Dr.
Yokers simply replied, “I’m just

Local politicians, musicians, artists and activists
came together last Saturday for the Brite Leadership
Coalition’s (BLC) Fourth Annual ENY Stop the
Violence March. The sun came out for the afternoon’s festivities, despite a doom and gloom forecast. “When man plans, God laughs,” State Senator
Roxanne Persaud said of the bright sunshine. “So the
people can see we are in this fight together,” she
added.
The BLC was founded in 1985 “specifically to
build a bridge of understanding and fellowship
between the youth,” as is stated on the organization’s
website. BLC’s activities are often centered around
Linden Park, where they help with maintenance and
organize sporting events. “Because of these initiatives, friendships were developed between young
men that were at odds with one another,” according
to BLC.
After the 1.2-mile march through East New York,
a group gathered in Linden Park, and community
leaders had the chance to speak on violence. The
theme was essentially that a strong community will
foster strong ethics. “Hurt people, hurt people.
We’re not dealing with the hurt in our neighborhood,” said Assemblymember Latrice Walker.
Walker then related a story of a 10-year-old student
with a dream of becoming a sharpshooter. Walker
hypothesized that the student’s career dream was
influenced by the fact that he shared a classroom
with the sister of a man who had murdered his brother. The tales were chilly in Linden Park last
Saturday, but the future looked bright, as community is fostered through organizations such as BLC,
and crime rates continue to reduce.

Another Fatality Added To
Rockaway Parkway Death Roster

Rockaway Parkway will be undergoing safety improvements this summer, but the work by the NYC
Department of Transportation can’t
start soon enough. The treacherous
roadway claimed another life – that of
a pedestrian – bringing the tally to six
deaths in almost six years on the section that runs from Flatlands to
Seaview avenues.
According to police sources, a 66year-old woman succumbed to her
injuries on Monday, April 18th after
clinging to life for almost four months.
The victim, whose name has not been
released, was attempting to cross
Rockaway Parkway, near Avenue N,
on December 31, 2015 around 9:45
a.m. when a gray 2003 Mitsubishi
Lancer, traveling westbound on
Avenue N, struck the woman while
making a left-hand turn onto
Rockaway Parkway.
The victim was reported to have
injuries to her lower body and was
transported to Brookdale Hospital but
died months later from her injuries.
The driver of the Mitsubishi remained
on the scene, but the investigation is
ongoing by the NYPD Collision
Investigation Squad.

Marine Park I.S. 278 Robotics Team Headed to National Championships

A group of young upstart gadget builders from
Marine Park have worked their way into the national spotlight. On April 23rd, Marine Park Robotics
of I.S. 278 won the U.S. Navy-sponsored SeaPerch
underwater robotics competition at Flushing
Meadows Corona Park Aquatic Center.
The team consists of 7th and 8th grade students
Andrew Grechko, John Mosca, Matthew
Rosenhaus, Julianne Braunstein, Amanda Beckman
and Mia Calafiore) highly dedicated to science and
robotics. Speaking at the Marine Park Civic
Association meeting on April 26th, Coach Bruce
Gamsey said the kids come in at 7:15 every morning before school to build their award-winning
machines. The team had to design and build an
underwater robot, build their motors and wire their
control box to be able to complete two different
underwater obstacle courses. Additionally, they
had to develop a research presentation for the
judges.
Their hard work is apparently paying off. The
team, which has only been in existence for two
years, won the Lego League Brooklyn Tournament
earlier this year, and after winning the SeaPerch
Regional contest in Queens, the team is headed to
Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the national championships.
With the date of the Baton Rouge contest fast
approaching on May 21st, the team has set up a
GoFundMe page, where individuals can donate
towards the cost of their trip. They are trying to
raise $6,500 for airfare and room and board for the
students and their teacher. To contribute, visit

him to open a vape kiosk and allows him to peddle these e-cigarettes."
On April 5th, Domatov went to Kings Plaza
with two friends and visited Plaza Vapes. A clerk
allegedly began showing them products even
though it’s illegal to sell e-cigarettes to people
under 21.
When the clerk plugged an e-cigarette into the

of metal tore through Domatov’s cornea, blinding him in his left eye.
As of press time, Kings Plaza has not released
a statement regarding the owner of Plaza Vapes.

Congratulations On Landmark Anniversary!

I am writing to congratulate the 
  and its management on the 95th anniversary of its establishment. Ninety-five years is
quite an impressive record for any small business
and makes the    a contender for
the title of Canarsie’s oldest business, along with
Popkin’s Motor Parts, which was established as a
grain and feed business in the early 20th century.
This landmark anniversary seems to me an
appropriate time to revisit the issue of restoring
Lester J. Stillwell to his rightful place in history.
As you know, on April 21, 1921, the 
  was founded by Walter S. Patrick and
Lester J. Stillwell. However, by the end of the
year, it had failed, and, in 1923, was revitalized by
Mr. Patrick. Mr. Stillwell, however, never severed
his friendship with Mr. Patrick, nor his connection
to Canarsie and, in fact, is interred in Canarsie
Cemetery together with his late wife, Natalie.
Following the death of Managing Editor Chuck
Rogers, I was privileged to be given access to
some documents, which were found in his files.
Among these documents was a letter from a party
who had personally known Mr. Patrick’s landlord
in Canarsie during the    early
years. Shockingly, the letter stated that, at that
time, Mr. Patrick was a communist and an atheist.
However, largely through the influence of Mr.
Stillwell, who was his friend as well as his business partner, he renounced communism and found
God, to the extent that he began to study for the
ministry. He was ultimately ordained, and, in
1935, he sold the   to embark on
his career in the ministry.
I was initially puzzled that Chuck, who was a
dear friend, never shared this letter with me. Upon
further consideration, I realized that he, ever the
gentleman, knew that I held Mr. Patrick in high
esteem and did not want to tarnish my image of
him. For several years, I have agonized over
whether to share this information with the public
and finally decided to do so because it demonstrates that in addition to impacting upon
Canarsie’s history by establish the 
 Mr. Stillwell had a profound and redemptive influence on another human being’s life.
I am, therefore, suggesting that the 

This will serve to restore Mr. Stillwell to his
rightful place in history, something that, in my
opinion is long overdue.
Before closing, I must pause to remember
some of those who were instrumental in the
  over its lifetime. In addition to
Messrs. Patrick and Stillwell, these include
Publishers Edward M. Herrschaft (1935-1959),
Robert and Joseph Samitz, Joseph’s wife, Helen,
and Robert’s wife, Mary, who served as Publisher
following Robert’s death. I must also acknowl-
edge the late editors, Maurice Paul and my dear
friend, Charles (Chuck) Rogers. When I wrote a
similar piece for the    90th
anniversary, I remarked to Chuck that I looked
forward to collaborating with him on the 95th and

Finally, I want to thank publisher Donna Marra
and her husband, Alex, for keeping the 

part, and for their heartfelt friendship and support.
I trust that the next 95 years of the 

Rappin’ At Ryder Elementary
Last week, Souljerz Crew teamed up with Harlem Hip-Hop
Tours and held a Hip-Hop assembly at P.S. 114 Ryder
Elementary School. The mission of Souljerz is to educate
young kids about true Hip-Hop Culture versus rap music (a
subdivision of Hip-Hop) via the original four elements
(Graffiti art, DJ/beatbox, BBoys/BGirls and MC/Rapper).
The “101” assembly shared the stories of some original pioneers from the funk era (1960’s) and traveled up to the
present day, ultimately leading to a discussion of “Where
will the future take us?” The project merged fun, participation and curiosity. Its largest reward is that it bridges all generation gaps and sparks questions from students to their
older relatives like “What was it like to experience Hip-Hop
back then?” or “Can you still dance/rap?” If you’re looking
to get this type of Hip-Hop education brought to your
school, contact Souljerz Crew at www.souljerzcrew.com.

Proposed Bus Lane On Flatlands Avenue Not Welcome Here

Anyone who has driven down Utica Avenue in a
car lately knows how inconvenient a four-mile bus
lane can be. Thanks to the bill signed into law by
Governor Cuomo, a well-moving, two-lane, major
avenue is suddenly transformed into a slow-moving,
congested, one-lane street where you cannot make a
left turn for five or six blocks at a time. Then, there
are the dollar van drivers, who use the bus lane as
their own personal fast lane, and the scofflaws who
use it to pass a whole line of cars that are actually
obeying the rules of the road, making the strip more
treacherous than ever before by creating additional
chaos and confusion.
Supporters of the bus lane initiative, namely the
citizens’ group Transportation Alternatives, claim
just the opposite. They suggest that bus lanes make
streets safer. They say that bus lanes help mass transit commuters get to where they are going faster;
making buses a more desirable mode of transport.
They believe this will cause more people to take the
bus - instead of driving - and that if fewer cars are on
the road, the streets will be safer for pedestrians and
bicyclists. While it is true that many drivers now try
to avoid Utica Avenue because of the tremendous
increase in traffic, most simply find alternative
routes to their destinations as inconvenient as that
may be. Many question the validity of the safety
issue, and say that buses and bicycles are equally as
likely to crash and injure pedestrians as cars.
Bus lanes and bike lanes are popping up all over
Brooklyn and causing quite a stir in many communities where they are unwelcome. At the Mill Island
Civic Association’s April 21st meeting, at Sunrise
Assisted Living, Councilman Alan Maisel addressed
the community’s concern over a similar bus lane,
proposed to be created on Flatlands Avenue. The
length of the proposed bus lane, and the cross streets
affected, has not yet been disclosed. Maisel assured
community members that he was in strong opposition to the proposal and said that if it became a more
concrete plan, he would do everything in his power
to prevent its creation. If that turns out to be the case,
Maisel intends to conduct a mass mailing to inform
local residents and to gain their support in opposing
the bus lane, but at this time, officials are taking
await-and-see approach.

New Phone Scams Target Senior Citizens

At the Mill Island Civic Association’s meeting on
Thursday, April 21st at the Sunrise Assisted Living
facility, President Sol Needle invited guest speaker
Alexander Gurevich (Associate Director of the
Office of Public Engagement for the Kings County
District Attorney’s Office) to discuss some of the latest phone scams targeting seniors in our area.
Gurevich explained that the elderly are far more
likely to fall victim to phone scams simply because
they are so much more polite than young people. The
elderly are often reluctant to hang up on solicitors
and will usually hear a caller out even if they suspect
something is amiss.
He addressed the ‘IRS Scam,’ which has already
robbed victims of an estimated $6 million to date.
This scam begins with a phone call from someone
with a Washington, DC area code, who claims to be
an employee of the Internal Revenue Service,
demanding the payment of back taxes. The caller
usually threatens jail time and demands immediate

payment via a Green Dot card, which is a virtually
untraceable prepaid card. Similarly, there is the ‘Jury
Duty Scam,’ in which a caller claims to be an
employee of the County Clerk’s office and demands
that the victim pay a fine for ignoring a jury duty
summons. Gurevich warned that these con artists
can be very persuasive, but that no government
employee would ever demand immediate payment.
He advised anyone who receives such a call to hang
up before they are sucked into the scheme.
Perhaps worst of all, Gurevich discussed the
‘Grandchild Scam,’ which is also targeted towards
senior citizens and plays particularly well on their
heart strings. In this scenario, the scammer will first
utilize social media to identify a young person who
is on vacation, identify their grandparents, and then
make their call. When the grandparent answers the
phone, the scammer identifies themselves as the
grandchild, explains that he or she has gotten into
some trouble on vacation and asks that they send
money via Western Union or bank wire without
alerting their parents. The grandparent almost
always falls for this one, and the results can be financially devastating for an elderly person on a fixed
income.
Gurevich urged anyone who has fallen victim to
this or any kind of phone scam to contact the DA’s
Action Center at 718-250-2340 right away. With
cases like these, time is of the essence, so it is important to act quickly.

Kings Plaza Holds Earth Day Fashion Competition

The voice of Southern Belle and self-proclaimed
“New Miss Mississippi” Jules Nobles echoed
through Kings Plaza Mall last week welcoming the
public to witness the mall’s new annual event:
Recycle the Runway.
Five contestants were chosen to take a variety of
items, which would normally be thrown out, and
create outfits on mannequins. An additional surprise
item had to be incorporated into all the designs. Four
judges from the fashion industry scored the dresses
based on style, originality, creativity, wearability and
the use of recycled/sustainable materials.
“This is the first time we’re hosting Recycle the
Runway at Kings Plaza, but we have hosted it at the
Queens Center Mall in the past,” stated Dawn
Simon, Area Senior Manager, Marketing Kings
Plaza. “Hosting the event on Earth Day gives it a
stylish nod, and it creates more awareness to Earth
Day in a fun and fashionable way. I think we got a
great response from people in the community who
are interested in participating, and I’m really excited
to see their creativity unfold right in front of our
eyes.”
Each contestant brought their own wide assortment of materials and tools, including electrical
tape, garbage bags, glue sticks and crochet needles.
Kings Plaza provided the extra items: One-yard
pieces of advertisement banner fabric. They had to
complete their work in an hour in front of shoppers.
Prizes ranged from $50 Kings Plaza gift cards for
4th and 5th place winners to the grand prize of a
$1,000 Kings Plaza gift card.
The clothing showed the creativity of each participant’s ideas, including everything from a practical
top and shorts outfit for a household chef to a dress
for a night out on the town. There was a tie for the
grand prize, so a tiebreaker challenge was assigned
to the remaining competitors: creating a handbag in
a half hour with just the remaining unused materials.
Trudy Miller, an architect and sustainable fashion
designer, created a nightlife dress, which would
allow women to alter its size. Her competition came
from eco-friendly fashion designer Jakiem Crayon,
who made a literal hoop skirt using a hula hoop,
garbage bags, a roll of packing paper with a painted
bra, gold belts for a choker and the mall’s fabric for
a headpiece.
In the tiebreaker, Miller utilized a few feet of her
remaining fabric to create a bag she could wear with
ties around her neck and waist. Crayon, who had the
misfortune of throwing away his remaining fabric
prior to the scores being read, was allowed to use
one of the remaining yards of the mall’s fabric and
grabbed up unused event programs. He masterfully
folded, cut, taped and glued pieces together to make
a clutch purse with a cell phone slot inside. The
crowd and judges agreed with the final results of
Crayon taking home the grand prize.
“My initial inspiration was from my grandmother, Irene Jones, who passed away in 2009,” said
Crayon. “I wanted to incorporate an African design
and add in many landmarks to the skirt. Doing this
competition in Brooklyn was very important to me.
It gave us a chance to show Brooklyn that it was possible to recycle many of the things we would normally throw out. I want this to keep going until the
rest of the world learns to do the same.”
Recycle the Runway was the prelude to Fashion
Week Brooklyn, which will kick off on May 1st
from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Kings Plaza. A part of Kings
Plaza will transform into a runway and feature merchandise from the mall’s retailers in a fashion show.
All five designs of the competition will remain on
display through the end of Fashion Week Brooklyn
in the mall’s concourse.

Midwood High Students Make Waves At National Ocean Sciences Competition
Five students from Midwood High School competed against other top high school scholars in the 19th
National Finals Competition of the National Ocean
Sciences Bowl (NOSB) on Saturday, April 23rd to
Sunday, April 24th in Morehead City, North Carolina.
The team enjoyed a top 10 finish – tying for ninth
place.
The Midwood High School team consists of five
seniors: Andrew Li (captain), Samuel Makarovskiy,
Joseph Parziale, Bart Rosenzweig and Austin Siu. The
Finals competition theme was “Our Changing Ocean:
Science for Strong Coastal Communities.” The competition tested students’ knowledge of ocean-related
topics, which include cross-disciplines of biology,
chemistry, policy, physics and geology by answering
buzzer-style, multiple choice questions and longer, critical thinking-based team challenge questions. They
also participated in the Science Expert Briefing, a mock
congressional hearing where they presented science
recommendations on a piece of legislation, bettering
their understanding of how science informs policy.
The Midwood seniors won the Bay Scallop Bowl
regional competition (one of 25 regional competitions
for the NOSB) in March and joined 23 other regional
team winners (out of a total of 369 competing teams) at
the Finals in North Carolina. This is the first time students from Midwood High School have competed in
the NOSB.
The team’s coach and Assistant Principal of
Administration Alan Stack said, “It was our first time
making nationals and our success in the round robin
part of the tournament allowed us to be one of the top
16 teams entering the double elimination rounds. We
survived long enough to crack into the top 10 and were
very happy with our performance at the national level.”
“Midwood is very likely the only team in the competition that does not offer any courses in Marine
Biology, Physical Oceanography, Marine and
Atmospheric Sciences, Physical Meteorology or Ocean
Science. That being said, our students proved that hard
work and high ambitions can lead to great accomplishments. We overcame long odds to win our regional
event at Stony Brook and then bested more than half
the teams at the national event,” Stack said.

Canarsie Football Set To Face Tough Competition In 2016

Last week, the Public School Athletic League
(PSAL) released its 2016 varsity football schedule,
and it looks as if Canarsie High School will be facing a difficult road ahead.
However, head coach Kyle Allen isn’t overly concerned with the competition.
“There are three powerhouses in the PSAL, with
Curtis, Lincoln and EHall (Erasmus),” Allen said.
“After that, it’s up for grabs, because there’s a lot
more parity in the PSAL than in recent years.”
The Chiefs kick off the season on Staten Island
against Port Richmond—-who made the postseason
last year—-in early September.
Canarsie plays five other teams who made the
playoffs in 2015, including Grand Street Campus
(last season’s champs), Midwood, Erasmus,
Brooklyn Tech and FDR, who the PSAL moved up

Missing from Canarsie’s slate of tilts is the usual

the South Shore Vikings.
While the Chiefs’ schedule is stacked with tough
teams, Allen believes they will reload with capable
returning talent and key call ups from junior varsity
along with their cohesive nature that will help them
shock a lot of their 2016 foes.
“I wouldn’t be surprised when this team wins,” he
said. “This team works together. They’re going to
overachieve or (at least) meet expectations. We’re Canarsie High School head coach Kyle Allen
going to quietly sneak off some wins. We’re a lot displaying early optimism for the 2016 football

Schumer Adds Provision To Bill To Give Sex Abuse Victims More Time To Seek Justice
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced last
week that a new provision was added to his bill,
the Adam Walsh Reauthorization Act of 2016,
that would allow children who were victims of
crimes such as sex trafficking, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and other crimes related to child
pornography to sue their abuser for the pain and
suffering they caused – for up to 10 years after
the child turns 18. Current law only provides a
statute of limitations extension for three years
after the child turns 18. Schumer said that is not
long enough and added that this provision is particularly important for cases of child pornography, where a minor may not find evidence of the
exploitation online until later in life.
“The sands of time should not fall in the favor
of criminals – especially sexual predators. This
provision rightfully extends the chance a child
victim of sexual abuse or pornography has to
take action against those who caused them
harm,” said Schumer. “I have always supported
fully funding the Adam Walsh Act because it
protects our kids, but the provision we added
gives it even more teeth by rightfully extending
the window in which a civil action can be
brought against an abuser. The three years provided under the law right now is just not long
enough.”
Schumer is the lead democratic sponsor of The
Adam Walsh Reauthorization Act and is vowing
to push for passage of this critical legislation,
which includes important provisions to protect
children from sexual exploitation and violent
crimes.
Amongst other protections, the legislation
provides funding for the U.S. Marshals that help
track down and apprehend fugitive sex criminals.
Second, the legislation extends the statute of
limitations
for
federal
civil
claims
against abusers. The current statute of limitations
for civil suits is only three years after the child

turns 18. Schumer says that statute of limitations
for civil claims must be extended to 10 years,
which is the current standard for criminal cases.
Additionally, The Adam Walsh Reauthorization
Act includes key provisions of Senator Jeanne
Shaheen’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act
to ensure rape kits are preserved and to establish
a bill of rights for sexual assault survivors.
Schumer said that passage of The Adam
Walsh Reauthorization Act would allow more
time for a victim to sue for pain and suffering,
ensure law enforcement is funded to go after
fugitive sex offenders and provide rights to sexual assault victims.

Meningococcal disease refers to any illness that is
caused by Neisseria meningitis bacteria. The two most severe and common illnesses caused by these bacteria include infections of the tissue covering the brain and spinal
cord (meningitis) and bloodstream infections (bacteremia
or septicemia).
Symptoms of meningococcal disease may include sudden onset of a high fever, headache, or stiff neck. It can
start with symptoms similar to influenza (flu), and will
Talk with your teen’s clinician about meningococcal
vaccination to help protect your child’s health. Meningococcal disease is a very serious illness where death can
occur in as little as a few hours.
Meningococcal disease is not very common in the
United States, but teens and young adults are at increased
risk. The good news is that there are licensed vaccines to
help prevent the most common types of meningococcal
disease in the United States (serogroups B, C, and Y).
All 11 to 12-year-olds should be vaccinated with a single
dose of a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine.
A booster dose is recommended at age 16 so teens continue
to have protection during the ages when they are at highest
risk of meningococcal disease. This vaccine helps protect
against serogroups A, C, W, and Y, but not serogroup B. If
your teenager missed getting a dose, ask their clinician
about getting it now.
Teens and young adults (16 through 23-year-olds) may
also be vaccinated with a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine, preferably at 16 through 18 years old. Two or three
doses of a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine are needed,
depending on the brand, and the same brand must be used
for all doses. Talk with your teen’s clinician if you are interested in serogroup B meningococcal vaccination.

Early diagnosis and treatment are very important.
Meningococcal disease can be treated with antibiotics
(medicines that kill bacteria in the body). However, even
with antibiotic treatment, 10 to 15 out of 100 people with
meningococcal disease will die. About 11 to 19 out of
every 100 survivors will have long-term disabilities, such
as loss of limb(s), deafness, nervous system problems, or
brain damage.

Time to dump out the rainwater in old
garbage pals and clean out blocked-up gutters — standing water this spring could pose
a major threat! The NYC Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) is warning city residents of the widely broadcasted
Zika Virus, which by summer ’s end, could
be a threat to more than just travelers.
Currently, the Zika outbreak has been limited to south of the United States, in places
such as Mexico, Central America, South
America and the Caribbean. The mosquitos
that have thus far carried Zika are not found
as far north as NYC, but the DOH is concerned about a certain species of mosquito,
  or Tiger Mosquito, which
has the potential to spread the virus via an
infected person in the region.
Zika is most threatening to pregnant
women, because of the birth defects the
virus may cause. Zika has been linked to
fetus death, growth restriction, central nervous system injury and microcephaly — a
birth defect which causes a smaller than
normal head compared to infants of the same
age.
Speaking
at
the
Madison-MarineHomecrest Civic Association meeting last
Thursday, DOH Director of Community
Affairs Ricky Wong warned property owners
to clean out standing water from old bird
feeders, buckets, tires, gutters, etc.
Mosquitos breed in standing water, so it’s
important to limit their propagation around
the home as much as possible. Wong also
warned people traveling to southern regions
to take precautions against mosquito bites,
such as insect repellent, long sleeves and
fans while sleeping. Sexual transmission is
also a major concern. 80 percent of infected
people do not get sick, but they can still
transmit the disease via sexual activity.
When traveling to an infected region, condoms can prevent the disease from being
spread undetected through sexual activity.
More information about Zika can be found
on the NYSDOH website.
The next Madison-Marine-Homecrest
Civic Association meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, May 19th at the Carmine Carro
Community Center, 3000 Fillmore Avenue
(near Madison Place).

is invited.
Each Saturday at the 8:10 A.M Mass we will celebrate the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Let’s have
a deeper understanding of this healing sacrament. It is
not Last Rites, at the moment of death. As Jesus ministered to the sick, so does the Church. It is for anyone
who is seriously sick. So it is intended for those with an
ongoing condition (Cancer, Sickle Cell, Asthma etc.)
those who are going into hospital during the month for
an operation, elderly whose health is slipping and for
those with a mental illness like depression.
