Cadillac V-16s
Cadillac aspired to the territory and
prestige held by Packard (with V-12
models), Peerless, and Pierce-Arrow.
The introduction of the ‘30 V-16
launched a Cadillac legend.
The V-16 was smooth, powerful,
and meant less shifting. With 60 different Fleetwood or Fisher body
styles, they were completely unique
from other Cadillacs. The total production from 1930 - 40, was 4,100.
Just four marques have produced
V-16s. Most recently, Cadillac released an ‘03 Sixteen concept, and
Bugatti produced the ‘05 quad-turbo V
-16 in the Veyron EB 16.4.
The picture on the front page of
this month‘s issue, begins our look at
some Cadillac V-16 concept designs,
penned by former Cadillac Design
Studio talent William Kady.

Working Together Makes a Club

If you read the statistics they will all tell you that car club affiliations, shows and membership rosters are
down across the nation. Some clubs are disbanding and others have combined to regain strength. While it
has been necessary for all of us to re-think how we use our disposable income (if there is such a thing anymore) I am happy to report to you that Classic Chassis has not only maintained its numbers and financial
strength but continues to gain ground in attaining new members and providing activities and programs for the
club and community.
Our membership rolls have remained steady at 91 primary members and 38 associates. While we have
experienced some attrition, this static number is largely due to the effort of the club in the past year to be
more visible in the community and its push to expose more potential members to our club. Advertising in the
VOICE, car shows, the Pride Parade, attending other club's activities such as car washes and cruise nights
have really been a valuable
to tool for our club's outreach.
Advertising sales in the
newsletter have allowed the
club more flexibility in providing services to the membership and most importantly,
each of you, with and your
time and generosity, have
contributed to our success as
an organization.
In an effort to continue
2011 Alfa Romeo 2uettottanto Pinninfarina 24b
this outreach and provide a
medium that we can all contrib-
ute to and use to communicate our message, we are in the process of developing a new website for the
club. This endeavor is being spear-headed by Bryan Howell and it looks like we will be able to launch this
fully interactive site by the end of the year, possibly earlier.
While community involvement and activities and new websites are important to our future as a club, I
want to remind and assure everyone that we must never lose sight of the one thing that holds and binds us
all together, the real reason we are a club: mutual respect, love of the hobby, and continuing to act as a
community of classic car conservators. I look forward to seeing each of you throughout the year at various
upcoming events as we continue to bond together and strengthen our club.

The 2011
Sweethearts & Orphans Show
This was a strong year for this show. Like CCCC
gatherings, this show was diverse: AMC, Essex,
Hudson, Kaiser, Oldsmobile, Packard, Pierce Arrow,
Pontiac, Studebaker, Terraplane, Triumph, and Willys (let alone the non-orphan classics that were present!). There isn’t space here to adequately cover all
of the very fine cars. James Gudat took his 1965
Pontiac Catalina and Nathan Blasingame took his
1975 Hurst/Olds. AMC and Studebaker had the largest number of cars.
AMC had two Metros, two Pacers (including the
Limited wagon) several Javelins and AMXs, (one had
the Pierre Cardin interior, though not original), and an
’89 Grand Wagoneer, which, by the way, was the
longest continuous automotive production run on the
same platform– 28 years.
The Studebaker section had several Hawks, a
‘real’ Avanti (a ‘63 model), and a rarely seen ‘50
Champ pickup.
Among the Oldsmobiles there was an ’83 Hurst
Olds with the radical Hurst Lightning Rods shifter.
(see YouTube or the user manual to learn how to
shift it!).
Two Kaisers of note were the ’51 Traveler (an early SUV concept with the first hatchback) and a ’53
Manhattan.
The two oldest vehicles represented the finest
marques of their era: a 1926 Packard and the 1929
Pierce-Arrow. Both were absolutely stunning rolling
works of art with interiors that rivaled a comfortable
living room. Real craftsmanship!

Your Classic Chassis roving reporters were on the scene of
the 2011 Sweethearts and Orphans show. Lipsa Movin (HJ
Brice), Belva Dere (Duane Schroeder) and Della Mont (Fred
Burkle) rode over to Weatherford with Dyna Flow (Don Rose)
and Cora Vaire (Gary Duncan). When we arrived, we met
Leigh Baron (Art Darr) and Kitty Chrysler (Tim Bunkley) who
were snapping pics of all the gorgeous cars

March Cruise Night at Keller’s Drive-In
R e ce nt
2 0 1 1
by Fred Burkle
ev e nt s
Our first 2011 cruise at Keller’s provided perfect cruise night weather, bringing out over 30 members
and a great combination of CCCC cars –the largest group there! Wade Creson arrived in a stunning
Aztec Gold ’61 Cadillac convertible; Chris Zbinden brought his hot ’06 Mini Cooper cabrio; and Roger
Fitch drove his blue Porsche 914. It was a great mix of brand new/recent cars (including a Nissan Cube, a Miata, and a ‘Vette) along side of the gentile: ’54 and ’57 Lincolns. And of course there were the
cars of the other Keller’s patrons including a rare, even-when-new, ’70 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler.
Lee Arning lives close by and had invited the club back to his house after sunset. Lee has a beautiful
home and he was very gracious, with snacks and a bar all ready for us. Almost the entire group was
able to go, where we talked cars, cut up, and laughed for a long while. That was the most I had
laughed all week! We all had a great time. Thanks, Lee, for sharing your home and to everyone who
came out for making a fun evening!

Good Reading ~!
The following sections of the CCCC Newsletter require your attention:
New Arrivals:
Some of you have added cars or trucks to your collection (or perhaps you have a new daily driver); we’d like to share pictures and a little story with everyone in the club. Please contact Lee
Arning so he can get a photo of your new baby, along with a little story of the labor and delivery
(don’t bother the details of the pregnancy or conception –he gets muddled rather easily).
Car Stories:
The stories behind our cars and those of our friends and acquaintances are often fascinating –
even if the provenance doesn’t include ownership by a Hollywood star or a Wall Street investment
banking mogul. If you’ve got a great car story, just call Lee Arning and he can get it onto paper after
visiting with you on the phone -no writing needed on your part, just the story!
Club Members/ Cars Will be in Hemmings 2012 Classic Car Calendar
Hemmings approached Terry Watson and Lane Eaves’ to have their cars (’55 Eldorado and ’57 Lincoln
Premier) in the 2012 Hemmings calendar. The club got the call from freelance photographer Don Spiro and
by the following week he had photographed both cars.
Congratulations to Lane and Terry, and thanks for representing Classic Chassis in such a prestigious publication. We can't wait to see your calendar pages.
