Tonight we have the
honor of welcoming a
well known, knowledgeable and entertaining guest speaker.
I have heard Sara Williams at past conventions and I look forward to her talk on
“ Creating The Prairie Xeriscape”. After
last summers’ hot, dry
weather, this will give
us inspiration to adapt
to this method of
gardening.
How are your
transplants growing?
Esther is hard at work
organizing the plant
sale in May, she will
be asking for
volunteers soon. This
is our biggest fundraiser and a large number
of bulbs have been
planted already so
they will be a good
size for the sale.

Sara Williams is a well known and respected prairie horticulturist. For over a
quarter of a century she has been educating and enlightening us with her
newspaper columns, books and presentations. As the Horticultural Specialist
at the University of Saskatchewan, she initiated the Saskatchewan Master
Gardener program as well as The Saskatchewan Gardener magazine.
She is the author of Creating the Prairie Xeriscape, Perennials for the Prairies, In a Cold Land: Saskatchewan’s Horticultural Pioneers, and with Hugh
Skinner, coauthor of Trees and Shrubs for the Prairies, Vines & Groundcovers for the Prairies, and Gardening, Naturally: A Chemical-free handbook
for the Prairies. The revised and greatly expanded edition of Creating the
Prairie Xeriscape will be published in February, 2013.
Sara's dedication to Prairie horticulture has been recognized with The Prairie
Garden Award for Excellence; the Saskatchewan Centennial Leadership
Award, 2005; and several awards for program excellence from the Canadian
Association for University Continuing Education. She will be inducted into the
Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2013.
She has been a board member of the Saskatchewan Horticultural Association and the Saskatchewan Perennial Society, and a long time volunteer in
the public gardens of Saskatoon's Forestry Farm Park. Since her retirement,
she has helped raise over $200,000 for the Canadian Harambee Education
Society’s hostel for impoverished girls in Tanzania so they could attend high
school.
Over the last ten years 'xeriscape' has become a watchword for waterconscious gardeners. Extensively revised and updated, Creating the Prairie Xeriscape moves on from the basics to give today's gardeners a complete guide to planning, designing and maintaining their own xeriscape gardens.
Full-colour throughout, Creating the Prairie Xeriscape contains a reference section of ideal plants for the xeriscape garden. These descriptions,
with advice on culturing and best growing conditions, enable gardeners to
select a range of plants for year-round landscape value. You'll also find
chapters on native plants and vegetables for the xeriscape, as well as extensive tables as a quick reference guide for planting choices.

The Brandon Garden Club meets at 7PM on
the third Wednesday of each month except
July and August at the Seniors for Seniors
Complex at 311 Park Avenue East, Brandon.
New members always welcome. Annual
membership is $20 single / $30 couple. Nonmembers are welcome to attend meetings to
take advantage of the Club’s horticulture
program at a cost of $5.00 per meeting.
