‫األطفال هم زينة الدنيا ‪ ،‬يُقاس رقي األمم وتقدمها مبدى اهتمامها بهم ورعايتهم‪،‬فكلما اتسعت‬
‫املساحة اخملصصة لألطفال في األفق الفكري جملتمع ما فذلك يعني أن هذا اجملتمع قد وضع‬
‫عينيه على املستقبل الذي تعبر إليه اجملتمعات عبر استثمارها في اإلنسان وتنميته‪ ،‬وما األطفال‬
‫إال النبتة األولى التي نستظل بها في هذا الطريق ‪.‬‬
‫العلم‬
‫التعليم هو القاعدة األساسية لبناء حضارة أي أمة ‪ ،‬ومتي أحتل مكانا بارزا في أولويات التنمية ‪،‬‬
‫كان ذلك جواز املرور احلقيقي للتقدم والتطور ‪..‬‬
‫التنمية‬
‫إن املفهوم الواقعي والعصري للتنمية ليس مجرد أرقام وإحصاءات صماء عن معدالت اإلنتاج‪،‬‬
‫ودخل الفرد‪ ،‬والناجت القومي‪ ،‬بل أكثر من ذلك‪ ،‬هو إعالء لشأن إرادة التغيير املستمر مبا يضمن‬
‫ترسيخ املفاهيم والقيم اإليجابية وما يستلزم من انفتاح متبصر على التجارب اإلنسانية‪.‬‬
‫وعلى هذا األساس فالتنمية عملية حضارية شاملة خملتلف أوجه احلياة مبكوناتها االقتصادية‬
‫واالجتماعي والثقافية‪ ،‬لتحقيق قدرة مستمرة ومتجددة لتأمني آفاق أفضل لرفاهية اإلنسان‬
‫وسعادته‪ ،‬فاإلنسان هو منطلق التنمية ومنتهاها‪.‬‬
I greet all of you in the first Open Horizons
Editions for 2012. The past year has been very
rewarding and I am pleased to say that AOU
has once again surpassed my expectations. As
you look through the pages you will find that the
university has been very active on many fronts.
We have been involved in several environmental initiatives, the BLOM
Beirut Marathon recognized as the leading sports event of the year as well
as several presentations and competitions. We also had many events that
marked our year the most significant being the graduation ceremony where
once again another AOU generation has left us to explore what the world
has to offer. Another milestone in 2011 is the establishment for the ““Center of
Excellence for Entrepreneurship” which caters for the entrepreneurship drive
within each and every individual in the community and encourages the young
generation to open their businesses as well as introduce their innovative ideas.
Looking back at what we have done throughout the year brings a smile
to my face and makes me proud to be part of the AOU community.
Opening letter
Dear AOU Community,
I strongly believe that academic education plays a significant role in
shaping students careers hence the high quality of education we are
providing within our curriculum, but what is equally important
is their personal growth which can only be developed outside
the classroom. AOU works very closely with many organizations
introducing new ideas and experiences to ensure that we provide a
rich university life and prepare you for your professional endeavors.
I hope this year you will continue to show even more enthusiasm that
led to the many successes we had in the past year. I also emphasize that the
university welcomes any suggestions or ideas you may have.
Finally, I would like to extend my best wishes for a good semester
ahead and enjoy reading “Open Horizons”.

Since 2005, AOU launched “Open Horizons”, a university
publication issued every semester covering university activities and
campus life. Students and faculty members are the main contributors
to the content writing about various subjects, events and interests.

Orphan Day Event
Ending 2011 on a happy note, the
student affairs office in cooperation with
the Community Service Club organized
the “AOU Orphan Day” event on Thursday
29th December at university premises.
This initiative came as a part
of AOU’s active community service
program which focuses on making a
positive contribution to the society.
More than 35 orphans from
different associations across the country
were present to enjoy a series of activities
organized with AOU students including
a magician show, singing and music
parade lead by the AOU music club
and many lively interactive games. To
add a festive spirit to the event one of
the Students made an appearance as
“Santa Clause” creating excitement
between the children who took individual
pictures making it a very special memory.
Finally,
lunch
was
served
and a “Buche de Noel” cakecutting
ceremony
took
place.
The event was deemed a
great success and the associations
thanked the AOU for hosting them,
encouraging them to make it a yearly
occurrence for it brings tremendous
joy and happiness to the children.

Web & Mobile Programming
In line with the continuous quest to
develop the technical abilities of AOU
ITC students, the ITC department is in
the progress of conducting a series of
technical seminars, scheduled over
the fall and the spring semesters. Two
seminars have already been held:

Mobile programming led by
“Dr. Hassan Sbeity”
More than 70 faculty members
and students attended the sessions
as they explored new development
and
programming
techniques
implemented in the work place today.

‫ورشة عمل حول اخلط العربي وأنواعه‬
‫أقام قسم التربية في اجلامعة يوم اجلمعة ‪ 2011/11/9‬ورشة عمل لطالبه ( السنة الثالثة والرابعة)‬
‫حول اخلط العربي وأنواعه‪.‬‬
‫وقد استخدمت أستاذة سناء عيتاني أل ‪ Active board‬من أجل عرض ما يقارب ثمانية أنواع من اخلط‬
‫العربي مع حتديد الطرائق الصحيحة لكتابة اخلط الرقعي‪.‬‬
‫وقد تضمنت الورشة تطبيقا» مباشرا» لكيفية كتابة احلروف كتابة صحيحة مع متارين متعددة ‪.‬‬
‫معرض لقسم التربية‬
‫بهدف تفعيل النشاطات الداخلية داخل قسم التربية في‬
‫الفرع‪ ،‬وكما يجري في كل فصل‪ ،‬مت عرض مشاريع طالب‬
‫التربية ‪ -‬السنة الثالثة و السنة الرابعة خالل االسبوع الثاني‬
‫من كانون األول عام ‪. 2011‬‬
‫وقد تنوعت املشاريع بني مجسمات ولوحات جدارية وألعاب‬
‫تعليمية باالمكان استخدامها كوسائل تربوية وتعليمية في‬
‫املرحلة االبتدائية في املدارس‪.‬‬
‫وقد القى املعرض استحسان الطالب واألساتذة على السواء‪.‬‬

‫باالضافة للنشاطات الثقافية والعلمية والرياضية‬
‫التي تتجلى وتتميز بها اجلامعة العربية املفتوحة‪،‬‬
‫فإنها متيزت عام ‪ ،2011‬بتشكيل نادي خدمة اجملتمع‪،‬‬
‫الذي ساهم وبشكل مباشر في عدة نشاطات‪:‬‬
‫اهمها املساهمة الفعالة في دعم املشاركة‬
‫الطالبية الواسعة بسباق بلوم بيروت ماراثون الدولي‪،‬‬
‫حيث مت التنسيق بني قسم شؤون الطالب ونادي خدمة‬
‫اجملتمع ومسؤول األنشطة الرياضية من جهة‪،‬‬
‫ورئيسة وفد جمعية بيروت ماراثون السيدة مي اخلليل‬
‫من جهة اخرى‪.‬‬
‫مت االعالن عن مشاركة اجلامعة العربية املفتوحة بسباق بلوم بيروت ماراثون الدولي‪ ،‬عبر تنظيم‬
‫لقاء طالبي مفتوح ‪ ،‬وقد نظم هذا اللقاء قسم شؤون الطالب‪ .‬كما هيأ اعضاء نادي خدمة اجملتمع‬
‫القاعة في املبنى الزجاجي إلستقبال رئيسة وفد جمعية بيروت ماراثون السيدة مي اخلليل وبعض‬
‫الشخصيات الداعمة لهذا السباق‪.‬‬
‫استهل اللقاء بالنشيد الوطني اللبناني‪ ،‬وتبعه عدة كلمات من قبل مسؤولي شؤون الطلبة‬
‫واألنشطة الرياضية باسم اجلامعة ؛ كلمات ترحيب ودعم ووعود باوسع مشاركة في سباق بلوم‬
‫بيروت ماراثون‪ ،‬ليس فقط حتت عنوان رياضي و سياحي وخيري‪ ،‬بل ايضا حتت عنوان ثقافي وتربوي‪.‬‬
‫ثم القت السيدة مي اخلليل بدورها كلمة شكر‪ ،‬ودعم لفكرة املشاركة التربوية اجلامعية‪ ،‬وشددت‬
‫على إهتمامها بفكرة اقامة اتفاقية تعاون بني اجلامعة واجلمعية ‪ ،‬ترتكز على التعاون وتبادل اخلبرات‪.‬‬
‫وبعد انتهاء اللقاء‪ ،‬توزّع اعضاء نادي خدمة اجملتمع على كافة مباني اجلامعة الستقبال طلبات‬
‫الراغبني في املشاركة في السباق‪.‬‬
‫واخيرا يجدر بنا القاء الضوء على اجلهود املبذولة من اجلميع إلجناح هذا احلدث ‪ ،‬والتى اثمرت‬
‫مشاركة ّ‬
‫فعالة في سباق بلوم بيروت ماراثون بتاريخ األحد ‪ 27‬تشرين الثاني ‪ .2011‬هذا احلدث الوطني‬

AOU Year End Dinner
Arab Open University – Lebanon
Branch gathered over 100 employees
in its annual year-end dinner held at
the “Top 21” Restaurant at the Crowne
Plaza Hotel in the presence of Lebanon
Branch Director Dr. Fairouz Sarkis.
In light of the restaurant being
on the 21st floor and overlooking
the
capital
Beirut,
the
evening
was a pleasant end to a year filled
with achievements and successes.
Inaugurating the dinner, a humorous
presentation titled “The AOU Story”
was held highlighting special moments
and different members of faculty and
staff at AOU. The presentation was
a big success and applauded by all
guests present as it reflected on their
personal experiences at the university.
Following
the
presentation,
Dr. Sarkis gave a heart-warming speech
to the guests stressing the importance
of every employee within the AOU
Community.
She further expressed
her support to each and every
member
in
the
university.
After the speech, the AOU Music club
kicked-off the entertainment with a mix
of different music selection and of course
the customary zajal segment lead by
former AOU student Salem Ghanem.
AOU would like to wish its staff,
faculty & friends a happy new year.

the University Rector and AOU Lebanon
Branch Director Dr. Fairouz Farah Sarkis, a
degrees awarding ceremony was held for
the graduating class of 2010-2011 at BIEL.
The
remarkable
event
was
attended by leading political, social
and
public
figures,
academics,
parents and members of the media.
Recognized for being the only university
in Lebanon adopting the “Open Learning
System” in partnership with the Open University
in the UK, graduating student earned both
a Lebanese Degree and a British degree.

AOU’s football team displayed remarkable
talent and skill in the inter-university Christmas
football tournament that took place at
(Ansar football field- airport road) winning
2nd place in the competition. Playing
against other universities in Lebanon, AOU
football team won a series of 3 games
against DNA, FCB and Salam Club until they
reached the finals against Alnoujoum club.
The football team has been practicing
for the past three month on bi-weekly basis
and this win has come as a result of their
hard work and perseverance. AOU is very
proud of the sports club and we wish them
even successes in the coming semester.

AOU Students Participate in
BLOM Beirut Marathon
More than 85 AOU faculty members,
students and staff took the streets competing
alongside 31,000 participants in the most
remarkable sports event to take place
in Lebanon “BLOM BEIRUT MARATHON”.
A spirit of enthusiasm, excitement
cooperation and sportsmanship prevailed
on the day, and the marathon highlight
came from AOU student Hassan Hamieh
- Business
Faculty who won in second
place in the “Runners with Special Needs”
race, breaking a new record and making
AOU very proud of his accomplishments.
Participating in the marathon has become
a yearly ritual for AOU, emphasizing the
university’s commitment to promote the
culture of education and sports, and at the
same time cooperate as a team to serve a
goal. “Running for a Cause” is the theme of the
marathon and AOU adopted the “Running
for a Better Education” stemming from the
university’s vision of “reinforcing a society of
learning and knowledge in the Arab Word.”
AOU students have been preparing for the
event for the past month, promoting it to fellow
students, establishing registration stands and
spreading posters across university campus.
The feedback was very promising
marking
the
start
of
a
long-term
relationship with the BLOM Beirut Marathon.
Congrats to our runners and we look forward
to many more achievements in the future.

One on One with Fadi El Khatib
Q: You are the #1 Lebanese Player in Asia according
to FIBA, you are titled the Lebanese Tiger by Lebanese
fans, and you are a father and a husband and a son.
When you look in the mirror first thing in the morning
what do you see?
A: First of all, I see a normal person that has a talent,
and a passion for basketball. I don’t see myself as a
celebrity, but a father, son and a husband. These
things are more important to me from being a celebrity
who has a passion for the game. Every day I wake up at
6:30 to go and practice to stay in shape ans continue to give what I am giving to basketball.
Q: Who discovered Fadi El-Khatib?
A: I started playing in my school “Rawda High School”. My coach was Rizkallah Zalum. After
that the credits goes to coach Ghassan Sarkis because he is the one who made my talent
glow by taking me from Riyadi to Sagesse .
Q: What is the difference between Fadi on/off court?
A: On court I’m too aggressive while off court
I’m not. When I play , I play to win, I play with
passion, with determination but I am
totally different off court.
Q: The living legend Michael Jordan has
quoted you in the time Magazine that he
wants to see you against players like
Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade & Tim Duncan.
What does this feedback mean to you?
A: When asked about me, Jordan said that Fadi
belongs to the league and he would love to see
me perform in front of these players. This feedback is a grand certification (‫ )شهادة‬in itself and
a confirmation that I have reached a very high place in basketball because he is one of the
legends of basketball and he is one of a kind.
Q: Have you achieved everything a Lebanese player can achieve, Rumor has it that there
are talks between you and Detroit Pistons? Can you validate?
A: There is always an ambition for achieving more and more, you can’t just stop. I have won
everything regarding Asia, Arab and Lebanon but I still have that ambition to win more
and more. This is just the character of any player that has a passion for the game.
I had plans to go to Detroit to play with the NBA but I am starting a huge project in Lebanon
in addition I have my family here and my children have schools so no I am staying here.
Q: Is it your academy that is taking so much from your time?
A: No it’s a sports mall that I have made a huge investment in. It is going to be built on 12000
squaremeters; it has all kind of sports including basketball, football, golf, squash swimming….

Q: What can you tell us about your academy?
A: Well our academy is very professional; the basketball trainings give the basics of
basketball for the new comers, and also work on the talent and skills of the players who
have previous knowledge of the basic skills. This academy is growing and in less than a
year and we have more than 100 players. We hope to continue growing but right now we
are waiting for the project I am working on to finish.
Q: Why did you open the academy?
A: The main Idea behind the academy is to develop new skills and bring additional young
talented players in Lebanon to keep our name in the sports world. Initially, I was a partner
in Sportsville, but I decided to leave so that I can work on my project, the academy was
already established and I didn’t want to shut it down especially that I had witnesses a lot
of talent in it. So the academy was established.
Q: If you could play 1 on 1 against one player who would it be?
A: Michael Jordan
Q: Advice you have for teen athletes trying to go professional
A: First you should have passion and love for the game. Moreover, any successful athlete
has to stay humble and to let go of his ego no matter what, because sport is all about fair
play.
Something that I would like to stress on is you must finish your education. If you can,
earn a degree, work and play basketball at the same time, because basketball
will only sustain you for a certain period of time and after which you will no
longer be able to play anymore and will have to find another source of income.
Q: Last word for AOU Student and sports club
A: Thank you for interviewing me, it’s an honor.
I always say stay close to sports, not necessarily
basketball, but sports in general because it
protects your health and it also keeps you
away from a lot of the problems and
destructive habits that I am seeing in
Lebanon and Arab world like excessive
drinking and drugs. Sport will prevent you
from taking that road. Just love sport.

“Meeting Fadi was a huge opportunity for me as I consider
him a role model!!! Before the interview I assumed that well
he is the best Lebanese player across Lebanon and Asia,
I figured that he will have a little ego which surprisingly he
didn›t. It was like talking to a friend. Eventually meeting
Fadi was a huge pleasure I just want to thank him for this
amazing experience and I would like also to Thank AOU for
giving me this chance.”

Dr. Fairouz Sarkis
Main Guest on
LBC Helwe Beirut
Dr. Fairouz Sarkis, AOU – Lebanon
Branch Director was invited to appear as
the main guest in one of the first episodes of
Helwe Beirut in 2012, kicking of the 1st season
of the year. The episode shed the light on
both Dr. Sarkis’s personal and professional life,
alongside the accomplishments she made.
Over 45 minutes, Dr. Sarkis gave many different
accounts of her life including the reason she was
named Fairouz, her early childhood, being one
the very few females in major in Math at AUB
as well as important milestones in her career.
A special segment was also dedicated
for the Arab Open University, where Dr. Sarkis
highlighted that it was established 10 years
ago in partnership with the Open University in
the UK to provide high quality education at a
cost that most students can afford. She also
emphasized that AOU was the first university in
Lebanon that earned an accreditation from
the Open University Validation Services (OUVS)
and implemented the Open Learning System.
In addition, she touched on the advanced
teaching techniques implemented at the
university as well as the cooperative relationships
between the students and faculty members.
LBC Helwe Beirut producer Randa Abiad
explains that Dr. Sarkis combines success and
personal development which is exemplary
for Arab women today. Hosting her on
the show was an opportunity to introduce
her to the audience and gives a clearer
perspective of how women today can be
successful in their jobs, serve the community

60 year old AOU Alumni Marwan Kaiss

program “Helwe Beirut”. An inspiring story of
a man who challenged his circumstances
and chose to pursue a degree at the age
of 53, Kaiss demonstrated how the flexibility
and quality offered at AOU proved to
be the ideal place to start his life again.
The episode segment kicked off
with a short report showing a typical day in
Kaiss’s life alternating between home, work
and long nights of study and determination.
It also reflected on the warm family life he
enjoyed that encouraged him to continue
in a path that will lead to future successes
on both the professional and personal
level. The report also included his days in
university and class where he humorously
remembers “many times as I entered
class students stood up thinking I am the
instructor rather than their colleagues”.
Following the report a live
interview took place with both Mr.
Kaiss and AOU Professor Dr. Dani Aoun.
Dr. Aoun reflected on the positive impact
Kaiss had in the university and highlighted
the increasing number of older student
enrolling in the Open System program.
He further explained the need to address
the growing demands of working students
who are eager to pursue an education.

Education Graduate as well as Head of the
Faculty of Business Ms. Yara Abdallah made
a guest appearance in the popular morning
show “Alam El Sabah” on Future TV. Presenter
Ghada Abou Adal shed the light on real life
examples of working students who combine
busy working schedules with a college
education. The flexibility of the open learning
system is always an advantage to our students
who have proved to be very successful
in the workplace and academically, and
this was clearly highlighted in the episode.

For the first time in my life I ventured
in to a new territory; the nationwide
“Mr. Lebanon Pageant” hosted on
MTV under the Auspices of the Ministry
of Tourism and in cooperation with Nidal’s
Agency.
More than 850 participant from
across the country participated in the
competition and I was amongst the
19 finalists who made it to the final
round that was aired in December on MTV.
It was a new and very rewarding
experience where I met different people
from different parts of the country and
was exposed to many challenges. There
are many things I learnt along the way
and am very grateful for all those who
supported me throughout this phase.

AOU - Environment
A step on the Greener Side
We have only one world – so we need to work really hard to save it because
we have nowhere else to go.
I was recently selected by the AFDC, alongside another colleague of mine at AOU, as
part of a group of 25 other university students from all over Lebanon to participate in
the 3 months “Green Leadership Academy (AFDC - Starbucks)” training program.
The aim of this project was to provide an opportunity to a diverse group of
Lebanese youth with leadership and environmental management skills tailored to
the Lebanese situation. With these developed capacities we will be able to act as
environmental stewards and participate actively in sustaining our environment.
The overall project included: 8 environmental courses, 4 months of insight, 2 days of
leadership and project management training.
In the training we were exposed to several environmental issues including water
shortages, pollutions, global warming and many others. More importantly we were
taught that we- the people- are the major agents of change who can solve these
problems and if we don’t know one else can.
After completing the first part of the program we were assigned as “Green
Ambassadors” and our mission was to share the knowledge and information with our
friends at AOU.
In November, Omar Abbas (who was also accepted to participate in the AFDC
Academy) and I held a presentation at AOU to highlight two major environmental
issues. Omar Abbas’s presentation titled “Reduce. Reuse, Recycle” stressed the
importance of recycling in our everyday lives.
I, on the other hand chose to prepare an in-depth presentation covering
“Water Pollution & Conservation”. It included a video demonstrating the impact on the
world if serious water conservation measures are not taken, clarifying the importance
of adopting new concepts including “green engineering” to protect our future. I also
provided practical tips to students on saving water as part of their daily routine.
This experience encouraged me to be even more involved in the
environmental issues. The opportunity came through when I learned about the
“IndyAct Eco Warrior Fellowship”, a unique program for passionate activists in Lebanon
to become environmental advocates for pressing social & environmental issues. This
8 month international workshop is so rich and offers me a series of trainings on many
different topics including leadership skills, communication, advocacy, social media
tools etc. I am learning so much everyday about the new challenges facing us and I
am becoming more eager to save it and help my community.
I hope that each and every one of you can share my stand and try to save the
environment – we don’t have much choice left anyway.

‫طالب اجلامعة العربية املفتوحة يشاركون في حملة‬
‫األزرق الكبير‬
‫للسنة التالية على التوالي‪ ،‬يشارك طالب اجلامعة العربية‬
‫املفتوحة حتت إشراف مكتب شؤون الطالب في احلملة التي تقوم‬
‫بها جمعية األزرق الكبير لتنظيف الشاطىء اللبناني‪.‬‬
‫بدأ الطالب نهارهم باكرا حيث واكبوا إنطالقة احلملة مقابل‬
‫صخرة الروشة ثم إنتقلوا لتنظيف شاطىء الرميلة والذي كان‬
‫أشبه مبكب للنفايات‪.‬‬
‫وقد أك ّد الطالب وخاصة «نادي خدمة اجملتمع» في‬
‫‬
‫اجلامعة على ضرورة مواكبة جميع النشاطات التي تهدف إلى‬
‫حماية البيئة وإبقاء لبنان منارة حضارية‪.‬‬
‫جتدر اإلشارة إلى أن الطالب قاموا‪ ،‬قبل يومني من احلملة‪ ،‬بزيارة‬
‫القصر اجلمهوري ترافقهم رئيسة قسم شؤون الطالب في اجلامعة‬
‫مع وفد من جمعية األزرق الكبير برءاسة رئيسة اجلمعية السيدة‬
‫عفت ادريس حيث مت إختيار الطالبني عمر عباس وأميرة بو سعيد‬
‫إللقاء كلمة اجلمعية أمام فخامة رئيس اجلمهورية‪.‬‬

‫قصة‬
‫أراد أحد املتفوقني أكادمييا من الشباب أن يتقدم ملنصب إداري في شركة كبرى‪.‬‬
‫وقد جنح في أول مقابلة شخصية له‪ ,‬حيث قام مدير الشركة الذي يجري املقابالت باالنتهاء من آخر مقابلة‬
‫واتخاذ آخر قرار‪.‬‬
‫وجد مدير الشركة من خالل االطالع على السيرة الذاتية للشاب أنه متفوق أكادمييا بشكل كامل منذ أن‬
‫كان في الثانوية العامة وحتى التخرج من اجلامعة‪,‬‬
‫لم يخفق أبدا !‬
‫سال املدير هذا الشاب املتفوق‪“ :‬هل حصلت على أية منحة دراسية أثناء تعليمك؟” أجاب الشاب “أبدا”‬
‫فسأله املدير “هل كان أبوك هو الذي يدفع كل رسوم دراستك؟” فأجاب الشاب‪“ :‬أبي توفي عندما كنت‬
‫بالسنة األولى من عمري‪ ,‬إنها أمي التي تكفلت بكل مصاريف دراستي”‪.‬‬
‫فسأله املدير‪ ”:‬وأين عملت أمك؟” فأجاب الشاب‪ “ :‬أمي كانت تغسل الثياب للناس” حينها طلب منه املدير أن‬
‫يريه كفيه‪ ,‬فأراه إياهما فإذا هما كفني ناعمتني ورقيقتني‪.‬‬
‫فسأله املدير‪”:‬هل ساعدت والدتك في غسيل املالبس قط؟” أجاب الشاب‪ “ :‬أبدا‪ ,‬أمي كانت دائما تريدني أن‬
‫أذاكر وأقرأ املزيد من الكتب‪ ,‬باإلضافة إلى أنها تغسل أسرع مني بكثير على أية حال !”‬
‫فقال له املدير‪ ”:‬لي عندك طلب صغير‪ ..‬وهو أن تغسل يدي والدتك حاملا تذهب إليها‪ ,‬ثم عد للقائي غدا‬
‫صباحا” حينها شعر الشاب أن فرصته لنيل الوظيفة أصبحت وشيكه وبالفعل عندما ذهب للمنزل طلب‬
‫من والدته أن تدعه يغسل يديها وأظهر لها تفاؤله بنيل الوظيفة األم شعرت بالسعادة لهذا اخلبر‪ ,‬لكنها‬
‫أحست بالغرابة واملشاعر اخملتلطه لطلبه‪ ,‬ومع ذلك سلمته يديها‪ .‬بدأ الشاب بغسل يدي والدته ببطء ‪,‬‬
‫وكانت دموعه تتساقط ملنظرهما‪ .‬كانت املرة األولى التي يالحظ فيها كم كانت يديها مجعدتني‪ ,‬كما أنه‬
‫الحظ فيهما بعض الكدمات التي كانت جتعل األم تنتفض حني يالمسها املاء ! كانت هذه املرة األولى التي‬
‫يدرك فيها الشاب أن هاتني الكفني هما اللتان كانتا تغسالن الثياب كل يوم‬
‫ليتمكن هو من دفع رسوم دراسته‪ .‬وأن الكدمات في يديها هي الثمن الذي دفعته لتخرجه وتفوقه العلمي‬
‫ومستقبله‪ .‬بعد انتهائه من غسل يدي والدته‪ ,‬قام الشاب بهدوء بغسل كل ما تبقى من مالبس عنها‪.‬‬
‫تلك الليلة قضاها الشاب مع أمه في حديث طويل‪ .‬وفي الصباح التالي توجه الشاب ملكتب مدير الشركة‬
‫والدموع متأل عينيه‪ ,‬فسأله املدير‪:‬‬
‫“هل لك أن تخبرني ماذا فعلت وماذا تعلمت البارحه في املنزل؟” فأجاب الشاب‪“ :‬لقد غسلت يدي والدتي‬
‫وقمت أيضا بغسيل كل الثياب املتبقية عنها” فسأله املدير عن شعوره بصدق وأمانه‪ ,‬فأجاب الشاب‪ “ :‬أوال‪:‬‬
‫أدركت معنى العرفان باجلميل‪ ,‬فلوال أمي وتضحيتها لم أكن ما أنا عليه اآلن من التفوق‪ .‬ثانيا‪ :‬بالقيام بنفس‬
‫العمل الذي كانت تقوم به‪ ,‬أدركت كم هو شاق ومجهد القيام ببعض األعمال‪ .‬ثالثا‪ :‬أدركت أهمية وقيمة‬
‫العائلة‪ ”.‬عندها قال املدير‪“ :‬هذا ما كنت أبحث عنه في املدير الذي سأمنحه هذه الوظيفه‪ ,‬أن يكون شخصا‬
‫يقدر مساعدة اآلخرين‬
‫والذي ال يجعل املال هدفه الوحيد من عمله‪ ...‬لقد مت توظيفك يا بني” فيما بعد‪ ,‬قام هذا الشاب بالعمل بجد‬
‫ونشاط وحظي باحترام جميع مساعديه‪ .‬كل املوظفني عملوا بتفان كفريق‪ ,‬وحققت الشركة جناحا باهرا‪.‬‬
‫الفائدة ‪ :‬الطفل الذي تتم حمايته وتدليله وتعويده على احلصول على كل ما يريد‪ ,‬ينشأ على (عقلية‬
‫االستحقاق) ويضع نفسه ورغباته قبل كل شيء‪ .‬سينشأ جاهال بجهد أبويه‪ ,‬وحني ينخرط في قطاع‬
‫العمل والوظيفة فإنه يتوقع من اجلميع أن يستمع إليه‪ .‬وحني يتولى اإلدارة فإنه لن يشعر مبعاناة موظفيه‬
‫ويعتاد على لوم اآلخرين ألي فشل يواجهه‪ .‬هذا النوع من الناس والذي قد يكون متفوقا أكادمييا ويحقق‬
‫جناحات ال بأس بها‪ ,‬إال أنه يفتقد اإلحساس باإلجناز‪ ,‬بل تراه متذمرا ومليئا بالكراهية ويقاتل من أجل املزيد‬
‫من النجاحات‪ .‬إذا كان هذا النوع من األوالد نربي‪ ,‬فماذا نقصد؟ هل نحن نحميهم أم ندمرهم؟ من املمكن أن‬
‫جتعل إبنك يعيش في بيت كبير‪ ,‬يأكل طعاما فاخرا‪ ,‬يتعلم البيانو‪,‬‬
‫يشاهد البرامج التلفزيونية من خالل شاشة عرض كبيره‪ .‬ولكن عندما تقوم بقص الزرع‪ ,‬رجاء دعه يجرب‬
‫ذلك أيضا‪ .‬عندما ينتهي من األكل‪ ,‬دعه يغسل طبقه مع إخوته‪ .‬ليس ألنك ال تستطيع دفع تكاليف خادمة‪,‬‬
‫ولكن ألنك تريد أن حتب أوالدك بطريقة صحيحة‪ .‬ألنك تريدهم أن يدركوا أنهم ‪ -‬بالرغم من ثروة آبائهم –‬

Ali Jawad : A success story!
Ali Jawad holds actually the position of “Information Systems
Manager”
at
Splendor Telecom, Locations: Lebanon - London
After gaining extensive international experience in developing
leading IT applications and acquiring new IT skills and practices in
multinational work environments, Jawad was appointed “Information
Systems Manager” at Splendor Telecom. His current job is divided
between Beirut and London where a multi-million dollar project
is being implemented under his direct supervision and design.
In his capacity, Jawad is currently working on further developing
the cutting-edge “Nymgo” application, a service that provides VoIP
via a desktop application and boasts more than 2 million downloads
serving customers in more than 200 countries worldwide. The
implementation is taking place within a virtualized IT cloud that serves
as a high availability fault tolerant environment for Nymgo’s expansion.
Since its launch in 2008 Nymgo totaled more than 300 million minutes of
international calls.

Health effects of tobacco
The health effects of tobacco are the
circumstances, mechanisms, and factors of
tobacco consumption on human health.
Epidemiological research has been focused
primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking,
which has been studied more extensively
than any other form of consumption.

Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally.
Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs.
Smoking being a major risk factor for:
•
Heart attacks
•
Strokes
•
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
•
Cancer (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth,
and pancreatic cancer).
•
Peripheral vascular disease and hypertension.
The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and
on how much the person smokes. Starting smoking earlier in life and smoking
cigarettes higher in tar increases the risk of these diseases.
Tobacco also contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive psychoactive
chemical. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine causes physical and psychological
dependency. Tobacco use is a significant factor in miscarriages among pregnant
smokers.
Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year,
and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths
annually by 2030.3
On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers.
Second-hand smoke can cause a wide range of adverse health effects,
including:

Respiratory infections
3.Asthma
4.
chronic bronchitis
5.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
6.
Non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke at home or work
increase their heart disease risk by 25–30% and their lung cancer risk by 20–30%.
Second-hand smoke has been estimated to cause 38,000 deaths per
year, of which 3,400 are deaths from lung cancer in non-smokers.
