Surfing an Olympic Sport in 2020
The International Olympic Committee has announced
that surfing will make its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
There is no doubt Australia’s Olympic surf team will be
fighting for the gold medal in Tokyo in both the men’s and
women’s divisions and with world champions like Mick
Fanning keen to get involved in whatever capacity they
can, the sky is the limit. “I think it is great the Olympics has
recognised surfing because it is such a global sport these
days and for the people lucky enough to be competing
it will be very prestigious so I am extremely happy,”
Fanning said. “In four years time I don’t think I will be at
the top of my game so I would be honoured to be a coach
or mentor. If you have a look at the rookies that are on
board at the moment like Jack Freestone, Stu Kennedy,
Davey Cathels and Ryan Callinan, those guys along with
your Matt Wilkinsons have to be making a strong case for
selection. Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler
Wright have been leading the way but we have a really
good depth of field for the women’s team as well,” Fanning
went on to say. Surfing Australia Chair and 7 x World
Champion Layne Beachley said inclusion is important and
she expects a global audience to react to surfing in Tokyo.
“From Surfing Australia’s point of view, this is what we have
been working towards with all of our Sport Development
Pathway programs which will come into fruition at the
Olympic Games,” Beachley said. “When people see surfing
at the Olympic Games it is going to blow their minds,
whether it is in a wave pool or in the ocean is irrelevant,
the athleticism, the mindset and the ability to perform
under pressure is what makes surfing so unique and I think
the worldwide audience will appreciate how we can turn
a wave into our own beautiful canvas.” Current World Surf
League World Junior Champion Isabella Nichols will be on
the radar for selectors come Tokyo and was excited about

climbing, surfing and baseball/softball. The Organising
Committee for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 proposed
the new sports in response to the new flexibility provided
by Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap
for the futures of the Olympic Movement, to encourage
innovation in the Olympic program. Olympic Agenda 2020
gives host cities the option of suggesting new sports and
events for inclusion in their edition of the Games.

Broadbeach Jazz Weekend so unique is that you can soak
up the incredible atmosphere from the streets, or grab a
table at one of the many restaurants, it is all within walking

electic mix of street entertainers are sure to grab your
attention from stilt walking, juggling, acrobatics, mime
and roving musicians. On the Sunday this all blends with

Kurrawa Looks for New Nippers
As summer approaches so does the nipper season!
Kurrawa SLSC Junior Activities Coorindator Maddy Varga
said nippers is a great way for kids to get fit and learn
about beach safety. “For children and adults on the
Gold Coast, knowledge about water and beach safety is
invaluable and nippers is a fantastic place to start learning
all about surf lifesaving. Nippers, 5-13 years of age, doesn’t
only teach children about water and beach safety, but it
also assists them to make new friends, gain confidence,
further develop important life skills and be part of a team
and community. The 2016/2017 Kurrawa Nippers season
commences on Sunday, 18th September 2016 and runs
every Sunday morning from 7:45am-10am for all age
groups (U6-U14) until March 2017. We have excellent
coaches who run additional beach and board training
sessions throughout the week at no extra charge for
kids who are keen competitors or kids who just can’t get
enough of the beach or ocean. Nippers is not only about
getting the whole family involved in the community,
making new friends and having fun but the kids, and
parents, learn so much about beach and surf safety, the
surf lifesaving movement and gain skills for life.” Alessia
Catalano from last year’s under 13s agreed. “I love all the
friendship involved, I feel the whole team was just so
welcoming and really close together. This really helped me
settle in and make new friends, especially since I was just
starting.” After just one season Catalano has learned how
to swim under bigger waves with more confidence and
she encourages other kids to get involved. “I think the best
piece of advice for kids thinking of joining nippers is to not
be afraid. It may seem outside their comfort zone at first,
but once they give it a go I’m sure they will love it.” Sign on
days for the Kurrawa Nippers will be held from 9am-11am
on Sunday 28th August and 11th September at the Miami
Aquatic Centre, 80 Pacific Ave, Miami. Bring the child/
children’s birth certificate (original/copy/photo), parent’s
drivers licence & Medicare card (for blue card application),
swimwear, goggles and towel. Card/cash for membership
fees & uniforms. To make it more affordable for families to
sign up, Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is offering
a budget friendly pricing structure. The fees are $40 per
child and just $60 for up to two adults. The 2016/2017

The Surfers Riverside area is set to get a makeover
with the construction of a new architectural stepped
seating area along the Appel Park foreshore. Gold Coast
Waterways Authority (GCWA) Chief Executive Officer Hal
Morris said the project is the second stage of the Surfers
Riverside Masterplan. “We are excited about the benefits
this project will bring to the local community and visitors
alike,” Mr Morris said. “It will offer a reinvigorated outdoor
waterfront destination in the heart of Surfers Paradise,
attracting visitors to relax and enjoy social and cultural
activities within the precinct and appreciate our beautiful
waterways. This in turn will stimulate local businesses and
encourage economic development in the area. The $1.75
million project will involve the construction of tiered
seating blocks leading down to the river’s edge, spanning
the length of the Appel Park foreshore.” With construction
commencing in August 2016, the project is expected to be
completed in time for the 2016 Christmas holiday period.

Call Out for Cats Toys
A Gold Coast animal welfare agency is calling on the
community to donate scratching posts and other toys
to keep rescued cats entertained. Non-profit WildCats
Animal Welfare rescues and rehomes over 300 abandoned,
dumped and injured cats and orphaned kittens in the
Gold Coast area every year. WildCats President Barbara
Jackson said donations can be picked up from most Gold
Coast locations. “WildCats Animal Welfare need scratching
posts for the rescued cats and kittens in their care. We
also need cat tunnels and toys. If you are able to donate
any of these items, we can pick up from around the Gold
Coast. Blankets, beds, litter trays and food bowls also
welcome. All donations are tax deductible.” Call WildCats

Miami State High Launches Rugby 7s
A school right here on the Gold Coast has become the first
in Queensland to offer Rugby 7s as a curriculum subject.
Independent public school Miami State High made the
announcement just as the Aussie women’s Rugby 7s
team won gold in Rio. Miami High’s program is the first
specific Rugby 7s curriculum program to be offered by an
independent public school in Queensland with direction
from Queensland Rugby Union (QRU). The subject content,
delivered by QRU coaches, includes learning the rules of
the game, game strategies and in Year 10 the students
work towards a coaching competency. The subject was
initiated by a number of Year 9 Miami State High School
girls who play the sport for Bond Pirates Rugby Club, which
has also sponsored the students’ training jerseys. Matt
Chapman, Miami State High School’s Rugby 7s teacher,
said the sport has been taken up strongly within the
school. “32 students, both boys and girls, have taken up
Rugby 7s as a subject this semester, which also includes a
co-curricular component with an after school competition
starting right during the Rio Olympics on 10 August.
Rugby 7s, a variant of rugby union, has a unique skill set.
The sport is fast with seven-minute halves and teams are
made up of seven players. The 7s player needs to be an allround athlete showing great endurance, speed, strength
and bravery.”

JP’s #GC Update
From Coolangatta to Coomera, there’s no doubt that the
Gold Coast is home to a wonderful community that plays an
instrumental role in making our City the best place to live, work,
play and raise a family. Together with Gold Coast LNP MPs, I
have been working to support the community by putting the
‘liveability’ of the Gold Coast at the front and centre of our
policies and plans.
That means ensuring there are jobs for our kids, safe
neighbourhoods for families, and attractions for visitors to enjoy;
all whilst maintaining our reputation for being ‘famous for fun’.
We all know that drugs, particularly psychoactive drugs like
ice have become increasingly prevalent on the Gold Coast and
throughout our state and nation. There’s no doubt that these
highly addictive drugs can cause far-reaching and damaging
consequences to users, their families, and the wider community.
2. Keeping bikie clubhouses closed: only the LNP has the proven
track record of closing down criminal bikie gang clubhouses.
3. Drug addiction services: working with the Federal Government
to deliver additional treatment services, particularly for rural and
remote Queensland communities and ensuring targeted support
through Queensland Health initiatives.
4. Law enforcement co-operation: ensuring our state and
commonwealth law enforcement agencies work together and
tackle ice supply and distribution across Queensland.
5. Increased prevention: through community awareness
programs targeting high-risk Queenslanders.
This policy announcement is great news for locals here on
the Gold Coast, where the distribution and consumption of
psychoactive drugs have caused major social issues in our
community.
Together as a community, we can ensure that the Gold Coast is
the best and safest place to live, work, play, and raise a family in
Australia.
That’s why, if elected, an LNP Government will implement a
comprehensive, five-point action plan to take ice off our streets
through crime prevention, drug addiction services and strong

Interest Rate Cuts Not Passed On… Again
Recently the Reserve Bank came out and reduced the cash
rate by 1/4 percent. But instead of passing on the full rate
cut, banks have only passed on part of the rate cut. Banks
use the excuse of higher funding but in reality this is not
the case. They own a large chunk of the mortgage market
and know that existing customers are not going anywhere.
They don’t want you to know that it’s the new customers
that are getting the better deal. When I started over 10
years ago the average discount, if you were signing up to
a professional package, was 0.5% off the standard variable
rate. Most lenders are now offering up to 1% discount off
the standard variable rate to new customers and brokers
are getting even better deals. Banks are essentially
holding off reducing rates for existing customers while at
the same time providing better deals for new customers.
This costs existing borrowers thousands of dollars. The
game the banks are playing is also likely to continue
until borrowers start voting with their feet and getting a
better deal by refinancing their existing mortgages. This

On any given day in the consultative sales arena, there
is enough money left on the table in lost sales to scare
the fittest man into a heart attack. And it isn’t necessarily
because of a lack of knowledge of ‘closing techniques’ or
questioning models, but rather a lack of care and patience.
The amount of sales professionals that believe ‘if a sale
isn’t made today with this prospect then it will never be
made at all’ is truly staggering and if you can be the sales
professional that understands the following concept then
you will be the sales victor in the long run: When a client
isn’t ready to buy yet, you must find a way to support them
even further right there and then – knowing that the sale
is asking to be nursed until it is ready to be closed down
the track. Suggest a book to read, direct them to a resource
that you can give away at low cost, put them in touch with
someone that they could learn or benefit from – all great
examples of which there are literally an infinite amount.
The key to consultative selling mastery isn’t necessarily
in being able to close anyone and everyone that walks
through the door or picks up the phone, but rather in
knowing how to harness, nurture and grow relationships

What Does ‘Reconciling your Bank
Account’ Mean?
In order to keep track of your income and outgoings, it
is a good idea to regularly reconcile your bank account.
This allows you to manually compare and match your
accounting system with your bank statement, and ensures
that no income to you has been missed, and all expenses
have been accounted for. Depending on the volume of
entries your business incurs, you may want to do this on a
weekly basis. At the very least, a monthly reconciliation of
your bank accounts is recommended and prior to lodging
your BAS. There are various accounting packages available
now that will automatically import your bank statements
into your software, eliminating the need for waiting for
your bank statement to arrive in the post. Some of these
programs will also data-match your entries for you, which
reduces the time taken to perform this task. This helpful

maintenance software is advertised on the Internet and at
times presents itself as pop-ups. It’s all about scaring you
with threats of blue screens and system crashes. These
companies masquerade as Microsoft Certified Partners.
Windows Update and Apple Software updates take care
of all your needs. If your computer is slowing down, there
are other underlying reasons for this. No software can be
downloaded and miraculously repair your ailing computer.
