Hespeler Skating Club Presents: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SKATE!
Hespeler Skating Club is
proud to present their 44th
Annual Skating Show!
Since opening its doors in the Fall
of 1968, the Hespeler Skating Club
has never failed to finish off each
skating season in style with its
fabulous ice show. This truly has been
the highlight of each year for both
skaters and their families, which is why
we carry on this tradition of giving all
of our skaters a chance to shine in the
spotlight, as they courageously show
off all their newly found skills and
talent. This year-end celebration, not
only gives us all warm, fuzzy feelings
and proud moments that will last, but
also gives us a chance to show our
support and appreciation to all of our
ICE SHOW PICTURE DAY
February 24, 2012 12 - 4:30pm, RM #1
hard-working students and coaches.
Speaking from experience, it also
gives parents the satisfaction of
knowing that they, infact, have not
laboured in vain, despite having
doubts during all those extra-early, or
late-night dinners , while rushing
around trying to find and put on
skates and helmets, to only then sit
down to rest on cold, hard seats
wondering if it was all worth it. Try to
remember that nothing can replace
the feeling of pride and joy as you
see your children out on the ice, not
only looking incredibly cute or really
grown up, but realizing how truly
amazing they are and how blessed
you are to not only have them but
give them this opportunity to grow in
confidence and ability. How can
you not feel good about that! So, as
you can see, we here at the Hespeler
Skating Club, hold our Ice Show very
near and dear to our hearts because
we know the value it plays in our
skaters and their families and friends
lives. If you have any questions about
this event, please do not hesitate to
ask or look for updates that will be
posted rinkside, on our display board,
or on our website.

Ice Show 2013 APRIL 7, 2013
Every year, we have a professional photographer come and photograph skaters in their full
Ice Show costume(s), both individually and in their groups. These photos will be displayed in
our Ice Show Program Booklet and can also be purchased at a reasonable cost. Please
remember to mark down Picture Day on your calendars and plan ahead to connect with your
child’s Convener about costume design. It is up to parents to get their own children’s
costumes, group Conveners simply help in discussing costume ideas and reminding group
members of what time they need to arrive and be ready for their photo session. Timing is
very important in order for us to keep things running smoothly and make sure everyone gets
their photos done. It is very important that everyone is ready 20 minutes before their
allotted photo time slot.
COACH CLIPS: CHERYL MALTBY
Over the years, HSC has been blessed
with coaches, who not only love what
they do, but see the value in how they
positively impact the lives of our
skaters. One such example is HSC
veteran coach, Cheryl Maltby. Whether
she is working as a dance partner or
racing around with CanPower skaters,
her enthusiasm is not hard to spot.
Cheryl’s passion for skating began
when she was 7 years old. Her mother
decided to put her into skating because
“she was always jumping around in the
house”. She progressed quickly through
the badge system and was trying tests
and competing by the age of 8. Living
in Northern Ontario, meant she had to
travel to most competitions, and this was
always an exciting adventure for her.
She competed in two different levels Pre-Novice Ladies in singles and PreNovice Dance with her dance partner
Dennis. Cheryl especially loved the
dance competitions, as her and her
partner would have to do the standard
Skate Canada Dances, but a
choreographed dance to music of their
choice to a theme such as the Tango,
given each year by Skate Canada.
Sadly, Cheryl passed too many dance
tests too quickly on her own and her
partner, Dennis, did not, so they could
not be partners anymore. Because she
didn’t want to travel or move in order to
continue in Dance Pairs, Cheryl decided
to focus on coaching instead of
competing. Cheryl was a program
assistant since 1979, and she has been a
certified Skate Canada Coach since
1988. She taught in Guelph for 2 years
and then moved to the HSC, and 23
years later is still with us!
Cheryl has been married to her husband
Rob for 26 years, and they have a 22
year old daughter, Lauren, who is in her
last term of completing a degree in
Honours Criminology at Wilfrid Laurier
University. As a family, they help out
Lauren’s University hockey team. She
works a regular day job as a dental
receptionist in kitchener, which might
explain her ready, winning smile, and in
what little spare time she has, Cheryl
enjoys golfing, walking, playing pool,
gardening and swimming.
Cheryl’s first love is skating though,
and all her students are special to her.
She wants her private students that she
is proud to be their coach, and nothing
makes her happier than to to watch them
accomplish their goals, striving to be the
best they can be and just continue to
love skating. For all her occasional
skaters, Cheryl just wants to see them
learn and have fun while doing it.
We know that the planning and
producing of HSC Ice Show is in very
capable hands, and Cheryl, along with
Kim Yzerman, are working hard as Ice
Show Co-ordinators, to showcase what
our skaters have learned over the past
season, in a creative and fun way that
everyone can enjoy.

MORE BABY NEWS!
HSC Coach, Brittany de Beus,
is expecting her first baby, a
little girl, on March 21st!
Congratulations Brittany and
Craig!
COACH CLIPS: KIM YZERMAN
HSC Coach and Ice Show Co-ordinator, Kim Yzerman, is a true asset
to the HSC Coaching Team, sharing her expertise both coaching skaters
from Learn to Skate to Gold Level, as well as helping to make this yearʼs
Ice Show a success! When Kim was just 1 1/2 years old, she started
learning to skate on her familyʼs backyard ice rink. Her parents also took
her to the Parents ʼnʼ Tots Program, at Preston Auditorium, and this,
along with starting dance lessons at a young age, eventually led her into
figure skating. In 1986, at the age of 7, Kim became a member of the
Preston Figure Skating Club, where she skated in her first Ice show
called 42nd Street. Some of her best show memories were of tap
dancing on the set roof in, Crazy for You, and singing in, Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. From then on, Kim continued to
compete in many competitions, and, in 1990, she began skating with
both the Hespeler and Preston Clubs with her long time coach, Brenda
Gilmore. She skated 5 days a week and continued this for her skating
career. Throughout her teen years, Kim competed in Western Ontario
Sectionals in freeskate and figures, and was even coached by our very
own HSC coach, Cheryl Maltby, to whom she is very grateful for helping
her land her double loop and finish her gold dances.
Kimʼs coaching career started as an assistant coach, at the young age
of 12, and, after earning her professional certification in 1998, she
became a part of the HSC coaching team. Fifteen years later, Kim is still
with us, not only doing what she loves best but giving HSC her best, not
only coaching but choreographing the Ice Show. On November 12,
2012, Kim successfully passed her Senior Silver Skill skating test, and is
planning to get her Gold Skills and Interpretative next year.
Along with Kimʼs busy skating career, she is also a busy wife and
mother/taxi driver of two boys, who have put their hereditary skating
talents into hockey instead of figure skating, but thatʼs ok because with
the name YZERMAN they have to be. Kim also works as an educational
assistant, for the Waterloo Region District School Board, where she has
10 years experience assisting children with special needs. In what little
spare time she has, Kim enjoys her digi-cropping with Heritage Makers.
Santa Claus Parade
December 1, 2012
We want to say a big thank to those of
you who participated in helping to
represent HSC in the Parade, and we
want to say an extra special thank you to
Donna Henry, Grandmother of one of
our skaters, Natalie Zuccarello, for
making a much needed new Club banner.
CLUB EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS
Club Festival on Ice
On Monday December 10th, our annual
Club Festival was held. All of our skaters
did a wonderful job, and we hope
everyone enjoyed participating and
watching Club members show off their
newly learned skills. Also, we would like to
thank those who donated goodies to the
bake sale, as well as items for the gift
basket. The lucky winner of the gift basket
was Emma Sitler and her family.

We would like to
thank Santa for
taking time out of his
busy schedule to
