If wine isn’t your thing ...
By Lesley Bourne
World staff writer
To those craving an authentic craft
beer and relaxed pub atmosphere after a day
on Lake Chelan, there’s a place for you.
Drive out to Manson and you’ll reach Lake
Chelan Brewery, a brewpub tucked away in the
town’s calm streets.
The owners and brothers Ray and
Lee Medina have developed their business
to include four full-time brews and a fifth,
seasonal lager that dips in when the temperature is right. Their operation began during the
brothers’ construction days when they decided
change routes and transform their passion into
a business.
“My brother Ray in high school, he
grew up working at a home brew shop…so
we kind of carried it on from there,” said Lee
Medina. “We’d always brewed beer, and decided
to throw our alcohol-tobacco license in and got
it, and now we’re serving and selling beer.”
Beer connoisseurs can detach from
the Chelan hustle and bustle at the brewpub,
which has maintained its low-key vibe even as it
became a seven-barrel operation last winter. As
Lee described, Manson is a little more laidback
and a place where people can get away.
At the brewery, visitors will find
a sense of community within an easygoing
atmosphere. Above buoying voices, music fills
the small space, and there are the several boxes
packed with Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Billy Joel,
Johnny Cash and more, which customers can
browse through and play on the record player
hooked up to the pub’s sound system.
There is also a community fixture
written all over the place — quite literally. By

A sampler of four beers at Lake Chelan Brewery in Manson.
making a donation to the Lake Chelan Food
Bank, customers get to pick a spot on the
exposed brick wall and make it their own.
Colorful signatures of Seahawks pride are
aplenty.
If you’re hungry, the menu offers a
fresh array of appetizers and lunch or dinner
options. Fan favorites are hearty sandwiches
and hamburgers on a menu rounded out
by pulled pork poutine, hot wings, zucchini fries,
and more.
And at the heart, of course, is the beer.
Ray brews on Fridays and Lee brews
on Tuesdays. As mentioned, the brothers have
four regulars: Manson Beach Blonde, Devil’s
Backbone IPA, Mackinaw Red Amber and
Imperial Prize Fighter Irish Stout, as well as the
seasonal Heaven’s Lager. What sets their craft
beer apart? It’s in the water.
“We just want people to come and
see that Lake Chelan has some of the cleanest
drinking water in the area. It’s like the third
cleanest lake in the nation, and I think a lot of
our beer and the actual flavor of our beer has to
do with the water,” said Lee.
With clear tastes and compelling
finishes, each beer offers its own unique
experience to customers. In my time testing the
sampler for our readers’ safety, one thing’s for
sure: a single visit to their brewery and I am now
an IPA believer.
“That’s the best thing,” said Lee.
“Knowing that people are enjoying the beer we
make.”

Country duo Montgomery
Gentry will perform
Saturday night at Deep
Water Amphitheater
at Mill Bay Casino in
Manson.
The longtime country
duo Montgomery Gentry, featuring
Eddie Montgomery and Troy
Gentry, are bringing their good
‘ol fashioned country sounds to
Manson this Saturday.
The show starts at
7:30 p.m. at Deep Water Amphitheater at Mill Bay Casino. This
will be their last show in
Washington for the foreseeable
future, following a performance in
Walla Walla earlier this week.
Known for their hits
“Hell Yeah” and “Something To
Be Proud Of,” they most recently
released an album in June of last
year titled “Folks Like Us.”
They’ve been making
music and performing live since
1999, but they’re still proudly
bringing their foot-stomping hits
to the big stage with the same
energy that won them “Favorite
New Country Artist” and “Top
New Vocal Duo” in the late
‘90s and early 2000s. Tickets
cost $42-$92. For more information: 1-800-648-2964.

In 2000, Scott
Cossu was awarded the
Achievement in Music Award,
an award given to someone
has made exceptional contributions to music. His years
as an accomplished pianist
with a talent for jazz and an
ear for new and unique riffs
got him there. This year, Cossu
has been nominated for the
Lifetime Achievement Award
by One World Music Radio,
and the polls are open to vote
at oneworldmusic.co.uk. Never heard Cossu
play before? You’ll have a

Wine industry brings new life
By Rick Steigmeyer
Lake Chelan This Week
MANSON — With nearly 20 wineries
and wine-tasting rooms within walking
distance or a few minutes ride by bike
or car, Manson has become one of the
state’s most popular new places to sip
to Manson
boutique wines.
And this year, so far without the
danger of wildfires and irritation of thick
smoke, business is booming.
Situated on the North Shore of
Lake Chelan, Manson thrives in spring
through fall when it attracts droves of
tourists, vacationers and condominium
owners. If the lake itself isn’t enough
of a draw with swimming, boating, and
fishing, there’s the Colville Casino and
its Deepwater Amphitheater concerts and
a lively downtown Manson shopping and
dining area.
And now there is wine culture.
Over the past dozen years or so, more
vineyards have been planted to take
advantage of the Lake Chelan microclimate, long famed for growing apples.
The same lake-warmed temperate weather
and glacial soils that are good for apples
have proved equally suitable for growing

WINE

wine grapes.
Starting with
Lake Chelan Winery
in 2000, new wineries
have opened up year
by year to offer visitors
yet another way to enjoy
the region. Steve and
Bobbi Kludt started out
growing apples in Manson
in the mid-1970s. They
managed a comfortable
living for years until apple
prices plummeted due
to overproduction and
other problems in the late
1990s.
In 1998, the
Kludts and then-partners
Bob Christopher and Jim
Stephens planted the
first commercial vineyard
around the lake and one
of the first in North Central
Washington. They started
Lake Chelan Winery two
years later. The Kludts
opened a second winery,
Wapato Point Cellars, in
2003. Later, they opened
restaurants at both sites.
Paul and Kathy
Benson purchased apple
land just above Lake
Chelan Winery that same
year. With their sons, Jeff
and Scott, they began
planting vineyard on
28 acres in 2002. They
opened Benson Estate
Vineyards Winery in 2004.
“The people who
have watched us for nearly
20 years know what can
be done here,” said Jeff
Benson, about the influx of
new wineries. “People told
us we couldn’t grow grapes
here. We showed them can
not only grow great whites,
we can grow reds.”
Lake Chelan
tourism took a hit the past
two years as wildfires and
lingering smoke forced

area. Since that time about 20 wineries and tasting rooms have opened in the area.
vacationers to flee or
cancel reservations. Still,
Benson said the winery
has grown busier each
year.
“We’ve stuck to
our business plan from the
get-go. I haven’t been to
another winery because
I’ve been too busy here to
leave,” he said.
A stop at the
Italian villa-themed winery
last week saw limousines,
buses and vans bringing
in large groups of visitors
eager to taste Benson’s
wines while taking in the
scenic views of vineyards
rolling down toward Lake
Chelan.
“We were slated
to come up here last
year, but the fires kept us
away,” said Harold Jantz
of Tacoma. He and his
wife Peggy were visiting
two or three wineries
each day during their
stay in a Wapato Point
condominium.
Wine servers
Jamie Bruno and Jared
McGuffin were pouring
samples as fast as they
could for a large group of
young women who came to
the lake for a wedding.
Ronnie Kehl,
owner of Lakeside
Limousine, said he drives
carloads of visitors to
wineries around the lake
all day long.
“We started in
2005 with one car, now
we’re nine deep. There
were three wineries
back then, now there’s
north of 30 around the
lake. It’s been good for
everybody,” Kehl said. He
said his limos take out a
“staggering” number of
cases of wine for guests.
Wine industry
growth has also been good
for Scott Meyers, who owns
Lake Chelan Cheese, the
cheese shop that moved
into Lake Chelan Winery
four years ago.
“The wine industry
has taken off and it’s
been good for everybody,”
Meyers said. “The wineries
have paved the way for
us. We knew this would
eventually help bring yeararound business, and it’s
happened even faster than
we expected.”
Dianna Kopak,
head wine server at Lake
Chelan Winery, said the
cheese shop as well as
other local wineries and
businesses work together
seamlessly and bring
new customers to each
other. “Business has been
fabulous,” she said.
The Kludts early
on envisioned Lake Chelan
becoming the Northwest
Napa. One of several
consultants they and other
wine pioneers invited to
the area to help them get
started was Katy Perry.
She had worked as a
winemaker for 15 years in
Napa for famous wineries
like Robert Mondavi and
Stags Leap before she
was hired by Chateau Ste.
Michelle to head up its
white wine production.
She was so impressed
with Manson’s potential,
she purchased property
there in 2001 and with her
husband, Milum, started
Tildio Winery.
Cheryl Nelson,
Tildio’s sales manager,
said the proliferation of
wineries in the Manson
area has only helped
business.
“It’s like car
dealerships,” Nelson said.
“They all want to be in
the same place because
everyone wants to test
drive more than one car.
People want to taste more
than one wine too. We’re
not even close to the
saturation point here yet.”

BOOKS
The Bear and the Piano
By David Litchfield
“When a young bear cub happens upon a piano
abandoned in the forest, he’s not sure what to
make of it or of the strange sounds that come out
of it. Unable to resist the pull of this mysterious
contraption, Bear
starts to spend most
of his time playing
with the piano and
over time begins
to create beautiful
music. One day, while
out on a hike, a girl
and her father come
upon Bear during
one of his ‘concerts.’ The young girl convinces Bear
to return to the city where he can become a star,
playing the piano in sold-out concert halls. Bear,
longing to see what the world has to offer outside
the forest, agrees to go. He soon becomes a smash
hit with top-selling albums and all the fame he
could ever wish for. But what is all that fame without
sharing it with the people you love?”

Milwaukee, Wisconsin
