Page 8 SCHOOL SCOOPS DUNDURN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL With the amazing weather of late it almost hasn’t felt like winter around here. The school has been a busy place with lots of winter-type activities as well as many learning opportunities. February started with our Diggers basketball team playing in South Corman Park to end their season. The players looked fantastic in their new jerseys – great job Diggers! February 8-12 was Staff Appreciation Week here at the school, and our SCC did a wonderful job of spoiling us. On February 10th the SCC covered staff supervision for the day and provided a wonderful lunch and snacks for everyone. On February 22nd our grade 4 and 5 classes travelled to the Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon for the Team Up For Respect Game with the Blades taking on the Brandon Wheat Kings. It was a terrific game with the Blades winning in overtime! Then on February 24th our grade 5 and 6 classes headed out to Table Mountain for a day of skiing and snowboarding in the sun. All reports are it was an amazing day with many students skiing and boarding for the very first time. Thank you to all parent volunteers who joined our staff and students for this event. On February 25th our grade 3s enjoyed the Agriculture in the Classroom presentations. March will be another busy month with the following events and activities: 3 Grade 6s to We Day at the Sasktel Centre 4 Bucket Filler Assembly @ 9:05 am in the gym; SCC Hot Lunch 7 Agriculture in the Classroom presentations Grade 4-6 10 Grade 1/2s to Can-Am Gymnastics and the Forestry Farm; Grade 3-6 Curling in Hanley 11 Learning Reports sent home 15/16 Learning Conferences 3:30-7:30 pm 21 Dundurn Elementary School Clothing Orders Due 22 Grade 5/6 Musical Presentation 23 SCC Meeting @ 6:00 pm in the Library 25 Start of Easter Break (classes resume on April 4th) As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school or Mr. Hill. I’ve heard rumours about plus six temperatures at the end of the month – you know what I’m going to say, right? Splash pants and rubber boots need to be packed for those recess breaks. Grade Kindergarten to 6 report cards will be sent home on March 4th. Tri-Conferences will be held on March 16th & 17th from 5 pm til 7:30 pm each day – an opportunity for parents and students to meet with the teachers to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of students. There will be no school on March 18th. And Spring break is March 25th to April 1st – classes resume on April 4th. Grades 9-12 ski trip is scheduled for March 11th at Table Mountain. Grades 7-8 ski trip is scheduled for March 23rd. It’s always a fun day for those students, and we look forward to having all the students attend. The work on the balcony continues, and we’re looking forward to the new flooring surface being installed. There have been some facelifts to a few areas near the server to accommodate some air exchanging units. We’ve worked to create a permanent area dedicated to the fooseball tables and expect to be completed within a month or so. Junior basketball season has ended. Curling season is wrapping up soon with junior districts. Badminton season will be ramping up soon, and our annual Black Knight “Knight to Remember” will take place on March 17th. Deadline for Registration and $13 is March 2nd. A final plug for the SCC Community Calendars that are available at the office for $10 each. There are still a few that families ordered and haven’t picked up – we’ll assume next year that you’re not interested in ordering one. That’s all for now. For further information and updates from the students and classrooms, please check out our school website at http://blogs.spiritsd.ca/hanley/. As always, Mr. Anderson and I would love to talk to you if you have time to drop by the office or give us call. Take care and talk to you soon. Council will be working on budgets in the next month. Not sure where the budget dollars will be allocated, but it’s all to make our community better as we grow. More work on roads and public works seems like a continuous up-keep. As you may have noticed houses are starting to get built in the Sunshine Meadows development,. These are exciting times!! A shout-out to all our volunteers that help with events and functions throughout the year to make them successful in our community. Without your help we couldn't do it. We appreciate all that you do! Come see the Town of Dundurn at Homestyles 2016 – event is scheduled March 10th to 13th at the Prairieland Park! Annette Hamilton Deputy Mayor, Town of Dundurn R.M. of DUNDURN #314 TREVOR REID Report from the Reeve… The RM of Dundurn would like to welcome Donna Gortzen as our new administrator. I would also like to thank Hazel Martens for her hard work over the last few months while we transition to a new administrator. Your efforts and hard work have not gone un-noticed. It has been another busy month. The RM continues to work with the gravel companies in an effort to establish an aggressive plan to repair the north grid. I continue to meet with surrounding municipal leaders to create partnerships for the future growth of RM #314. I have also met with the Dundurn Military Detachment the other day to discuss and figure out a solution for a cross road to the west side of the RM. Talks were positive, and I feel we are moving forward together to resolve this. This March I have lots of meetings and the SARM convention to attend. I look forward to updating you in April. Have a great March, everyone. All over the world there is "gloom & doom", yet many in the world had the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The Wilson Museum had the great opportunity to hold a "Kid's WinterFest and Sleigh Rides" prior to Valentine’s Day. It was a great sunny afternoon (although wind from the north was chilly) on Sunday, February 7th when the Wilson Museum had the good fortune to have Jay Olyniuk bring his two horses, Dolly and Duke, and sleigh for everyone to enjoy an old fashioned sleigh ride around the field east of the Museum. Inside, everyone had hot lemonade, hot chocolate and dainties after the ride. There were small bingo games, games of chance and prizes. For instance, one of the contests, an old fashioned time honoured contest of "Guess how many Jelly Beans" was won by Lou Paqette (but he gave up his prize to Janet Mosser), was played with many others. There were some contests outside like "Hit the Snowman" with a red snowball (won by Pat Watson's grandson); "lob a knuckle bone" into the mini sled (won by Pat Watson). Lou and Ray missed "lobbing the knuckle bone" into the mini sled by inches...and oh, heavens, Ray being a retired infantryman should have "aced" this! Lou's excuse was old age! And the "shuffle race" wasn't attempted by anyone, perhaps next year. Everyone who attended had a great time and went home happy in time to watch the Super Bowl Game. It was realized that this event needs to be more advertized in the future. And speaking of the future, the Museum Board will be conducting a survey (see later in this issue) of the people of Dundurn and surrounding area about re-introducing a winter festival to the community. Please send us your comments. A great big "Thank You" to the volunteers who worked so hard to present this fun event: Jay and Wayne Olyniuk, Janet Mosser, Debi Mallough, Val Narraway, Patty Posnikoff, and the funny fellow in the old fashioned red long johns with trap door in the rear. Further, "Thank You" to the Museum Board and the Saskatchewan Branch of P.P.C.L.I. Association for their contribution of prizes. Wilson Museum Board members are all volunteers, and the reward for their contributions of time and effort in maintaining the museum is the satisfaction of being able to present the wonderful museum that the pioneers of Dundurn and area have established for the people of the town and area. Page 18 Announcement Town and RM of Dundurn EMO Coordinator "SO, IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, EH?" was an old slogan from Emergency Planning Canada after the famous Mississauga ON train derailment of chemicals on November 10, 1979, that brought Canada's attention to emergency planning for disasters in communities. Federal and Provincial Governments passed laws that would focus municipal governments to have Community Emergency Plans and Emergency Measures coordinators to maintain those plans and therefore, the Town and RM of Dundurn must follow these laws to protect their citizens. Both municipalities would like to welcome Raymond Moskowec, a resident of Dundurn, as our new volunteer Emergency Measures coordinator who took on the duties as of January 1, 2016. Ray Moskowec is a semi-retired Canadian Forces member with 22 years of service, currently employed as a Commissionaire at CFD Dundurn. He has vast experience as an EMO coordinator from his previous employment as a Municipal Administrator and EMO coordinator for the communities of Camperville MB, Green Lake SK, Kamsack SK and Vanscoy SK in the 80s and 90s. His training includes the necessary EMO courses from Emergency Planning Canada and Sask Emergency Planning that include Basic Emergency Planning, Emergency Exercise planning, Command & Control, Inter-Emergency Department coordination, just to name a few. He has also been a past volunteer firefighter for a number of years. Ray Moskowec looks forward to working in his new role with the assistance of the previous EMO coordinator Barb Olyniuk, who will continue on as the Deputy EMO coordinator. Welcome to the Municipal Team, Ray. Town of Dundurn Page 19 WILSON MUSEUM COMMUNITY SURVEY WINTER FESTIVAL The community of Dundurn and area held an annual Winter Festival in the past. However, in the last few years, this has not been held for various reasons. The volunteers of the Wilson Museum are interested in resurrecting this event with a slight change in the festival.
