Liebe DoktorandInnen und Postdocs der Goethe-Universität,
die Promotion ist für viele die größte intellektuelle Herausforderung des Lebens,
die Krönung der akademischen Karriere. Der Weg dorthin kann manchmal ganz
schön steinig und steil sein. Das weiß ich aus eigener Erfahrung als Doktorandin und als Betreuerin. Doch diese Lebensphase bietet auch großartige Chancen:
Sie können sich in ein selbstgewähltes Thema vertiefen und den eigenen Ideen
freien Lauf lassen. Gleichzeitig werden Sie sich selbst besser kennenlernen, die
eigenen Stärken entdecken und Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil schärfen.
Grenzerfahrungen, Unsicherheiten und manchmal auch Zweifel gehören in
dieser Zeit dazu. Ich möchte Sie ermutigen, diese produktiv zu nutzen. Das umfangreiche Trainingsprogramm unserer Graduiertenakademie GRADE kann Ihnen dabei helfen. Feilen Sie an Ihren Methodenkenntnissen, üben Sie das wissenschaftliche Schreiben oder lernen Sie, Ihre Zeit effektiver zu nutzen. Blättern
Sie einfach mal in dieser Broschüre, Sie finden sicher das passende Angebot.
Gerade wenn Sie noch nicht genau wissen, wohin Ihr Weg führen wird: Es ist
gut, sich mit anderen auszutauschen, die eigenen Erfahrungen zu teilen und Anregungen von außen zu bekommen. Dafür bietet GRADE eine Plattform, profitieren Sie von dieser! Lernen Sie Ihre Mitstreiterinnen und Mitstreiter aus anderen Fachkulturen kennen – und lernen Sie voneinander. Die Promotion ist

ch freue mich, Ihnen das Trainingsprogramm der Goethe Graduate Academy für das Sommersemester 2016 vorstellen zu können. Es enthält
hochkarätige Workshops sowie Formate, die wir Ihnen in diesem Semester
anbieten. Für unser Trainingsprogramm konnten wir WissenschaftlerInnen
unserer Universität sowie renommierte DozentInnen aus dem In- und Ausland gewinnen.
GRADE hat kein festes Curriculum. Uns ist es wichtig, dass Sie – zusammen
mit Ihren BetreuerInnen – Ihr individuelles Programm zusammenstellen,
um Ihr Profil zu stärken und weiterzuentwickeln. Dabei ist es ratsam, außer
den forschungsbezogenen Kompetenzen den persönlichen Karriereweg im
Blick zu haben und Angebote der GRADE, die zur Orientierung und Entscheidungsfindung sowie zur Vorbereitung auf den Berufseinstieg nach der
Promotion wichtig sind, zu nutzen.
Sie profitieren von den Erfahrungen, die GRADE bei der Organisation und

am pleased to introduce the Training Programme of the Goethe Graduate
Academy for the Summer Semester 2016 to you. The programme includes
high-quality workshops and also some formats that we would like to offer
you. For our training programme, we not only have our university lecturers,
but have also invited several renowned lecturers from Germany and abroad.
GRADE has no set curriculum. It is important to us that you consider – together with your supervisor – which workshops are important for your personal development and also how to develop and strengthen your profile. In
addition to considering your research-related competencies, we advise keeping your personal career path in mind and using the opportunities provided
by GRADE. These opportunities support the orientation, decision making
and preparation for your future career after completing PhD studies, whether the career is inside or outside of academia.
You will benefit from the experience that GRADE has gained with organising and realising such events so far. If you should have any questions while
putting together your own curriculum, you can always consult the GRADE
team for assistance.

Empfehlungen für Ihre Workshopauswahl
GRADE offers you–its members–a comprehensive qualification programme free of charge which supports you in
the PhD education and in the early Postdoc phase. Besides workshops that teach research-related competencies,
it includes offers that support the orientation, decision-making and prearrangements for the career entry in and
outside of research after obtaining the PhD degree.
GRADE deliberately has no set curriculum to give Doctoral Candidates, Postdocs, and Supervisors the opportunity
to compile an individual training programme. Nevertheless, we will be pleased to offer you our advice if needed.
You will find some recommendations below:
GRADE bietet Ihnen–ihren Mitgliedern–kostenfrei ein umfassendes Qualifizierungsprogramm, das Sie in der Promotionsausbildung und frühen Postdocphase unterstützt. Neben Workshops zur Vermittlung forschungsbezogener
Kompetenzen enthält es Angebote, die Ihnen bei der Orientierung und Entscheidungsfindung sowie bei der Vorbereitung auf den Berufseinstieg nach der Promotion innerhalb und außerhalb der Wissenschaft helfen können.

„As a PhD student in Translation and Transcultural Memory Studies, I attended this
workshop in the spirit of better understanding the term “transcultural”. During the
workshop, examples and our group discussions showed me how often miscommunication across cultures could occur. This, in return, gave me much stimulus in respect
of the multi-facets of “transcultural”. Therefore, for those who are or will be in an
international environment, or those who are interested in or have problems with intercultural communication, I would definitely recommend this workshop“

• To provide practitioners with an accessible explanatory framework for how
culture impacts leadership/teaching/supervision style, teamwork, conflict
perception, and problem-solving styles in cross-cultural communication
(cultural awareness)

• To provide hands-on practice in the application of knowledge and diagnostic
tools to support independent and proactive strategy-making (skills training)

Description
The increasingly global nature today of both academia and the commercial industry
means that doctoral students and managers alike are faced with having to be more
interculturally skilled and proactive in a work culture that does not comply with universal rules. Different cultural background and referencing – be it on the national
level or across disciplines – shape every aspect of our communication and the tools
we believe to be instrumental for successful co-operation and work. Reality shows
that many projects or exchanges are frequently at risk not for lack of know-how, good
intentions, or even language skills, but due to underestimating the impact of cultural
values differences and a lack of intercultural communication skills with which to react. The workshop focuses on:
• Navigating the conflict interface between talk- and silence-oriented
communication/supervision styles
• The importance of different perceptions of “face” value and how talk- and
silence-oriented behaviour are functions of “facework strategies” in cultural
communication
• Utilising systematic analysis to differentiate between preventive and
corrective actions, and to derive context- and culture-appropriate solutions
• The hidden conflicts of “international English”
• How to utilise English as a tool for “facework strategies””

Department for Human Resources Development (PE/OE) invite all international researchers, PhD candidates and university staff at Goethe University to GU´s Orientation Day.
An indispensable introduction to Goethe University‘s administrative structure and
units will be given by some of the most relevant central administrative units for international researchers.
Furthermore, two workshops are included:

The objective of the two-day workshop is to familiarize the participants with the
advanced level of the experiences and practices in the international development of
professional research supervision. This of course coincides with the overall aim to
improve the quality of doctoral education, to avoid false selection and dropout, and
to establish a highly productive and satisfying supervisory relationship both for the
doctoral candidate as well as for the supervisor. The workshop is aiming mainly at
younger supervisors who have just started supervising PhD candidates, at newly appointed professors as well as at postdocs eager to become scholars and supervisors
soon. But more experienced supervisors who are interested in the international state
of the art of professionalizing PhD supervision are also welcome.

The course aims to give a fundamental understanding of methods and techniques to
handle missing data in general. At the end of the day participants should have some
basic knowledge about different missingness mechanisms and patterns. They will get
an overview about different techniques to address missing data correctly according to
the actual data situation.
This course addresses missing data mechanisms such as MCAR, MAR, and NMAR
as well as missingness patterns like monotone, non-monotone or missing-by-design
ones. We discuss likelihood-based inference with missing data, introduce the EMalgorithm, and then turn to imputation approaches. Basically the course focusses on
multiple imputation (Rubin 1987) as a general method to analyze incomplete data
sets. By multiply imputing missing data in general or data missing due to item nonresponse in particular, valid statistical inference can be achieved using standard statistical software packages. Multiple imputation (MI) is based on Bayesian statistics
and Monte Carlo methods, therefore some basic knowledge of Bayesian inference and
computational statistic is useful. In order to appreciate the benefits of MI, we will also
give an overview of inadequate ways of handling missing data, and describe their respective shortcomings. Then we will introduce the multiple imputation framework
and provide some insights to the multiple imputation theory and underlying routines
based on joint modelling or the fully conditional specification approaches. An overview about MI routines implemented in standard statistical software packages such
as SPSS, STATA and R is given.

Datenanalyseprogramm MAXQDA.

Der Fokus des Kurses liegt, neben dem Codieren und Arbeiten mit Memos, auf
der Umsetzung von mixed methods-Ansätzen im Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Forschungsprojekte. Dieser Kurs vermittelt, welche Funktionen MAXQDA offeriert und
wie sich diese im Forschungsprozess für unterschiedliche methodische Vorgehensweisen sinnvoll und pragmatisch einsetzen lassen. Es werden Fragen beantwortet:
• Wie verschrifte ich meine Interviews regelgeleitet und synchronisiere die
Aufnahmen mit den Transkripten?
• Wie entwickle ich ein Kategoriensystem induktiv oder deduktiv, ordne
Textstellen passend zu und differenziere das Codesystem aus?
• Wie nutze ich Memos als Forschungswerkzeug sinnvoll für
Interpretationsansätze, Case Summarys, Ankerbeispiele, Definitionen und
Theorieideen?
• Wie kann ich meine Analysedurchgänge mit dem Text-Retrieval und
Suchwerkzeug gestalten und ggf. interessante Passagen automatisch
codieren?
• Wann helfen Variablen bei der qualitativen Datenanalyse und wie lassen
sich selektive Aussagen von bestimmten Personengruppen herausfiltern,
um sie bspw. zu kontrastieren?
• Wie visualisiere ich meine Daten für die Auswertungsphase und den
Ergebnisbericht?
• Wie gestalte ich die Arbeit im Team?
Methodology
In einer Mischung aus Kurzeinführungen, Arbeitsphasen und offenen Fragerunden werden die Teilnehmenden alle wichtigen Funktionen kennenlernen, anhand
von Beispielmaterialien selbst einüben und Fragen zu den eigenen Projekten klären
können. Der Ablauf des Workshops wird dabei an der praktischen Forschungsarbeit
ausgerichtet und mit konkreten Interviewdaten und Beispielen aus abgeschlossenen
Projekten (die wir im Kurs zur Verfügung stellen) und Literatur gefüllt sein. So bekommen Sie einen sehr plastischen Eindruck von der Auswertungsarbeit mit MAXQDA.

Statistische Verfahren spielen in den Sozialwissenschaften eine immer größere Rolle. Das stellt jene WissenschaftlerInnen vor Probleme, die selbst nicht quantitativ arbeiten. Der Workshop versucht hier Abhilfe zu schaffen. Er führt in das Lesen von
Ergebnistabellen statistischer Arbeiten ein. Der Fokus liegt dabei zunächst auf einfachen linearen Regressionen. Ohne statistische Vorkenntnisse vorauszusetzen und
ohne Verwendung von Formeln erschließt der Kurs die folgenden Themen:
• Grundlagen der statistischen Argumentation: Variablen, Hypothesen,

Es wird ein Überblick über qualitative Erhebungsverfahren gegeben. Die Durchführung qualitativer Interviews wird vertieft. Diese können hinsichtlich ihrer jeweiligen

Nowadays it is impossible to imagine any industrial branch or service industries without a quality assurance system. Therefore it is all the more important to deal with
quality assurance as early as possible, in order to be well prepared when starting a
career. Quality assurance is a system companies use to review production systems,
products and services to ensure consistent quality results by preventing and identifying weaknesses as well as inconsistencies at a very early stage in the service or production process. In the manufacture of foods, pharmaceutical products and medicinal
devices quality assurance is realised by implementing Good Manufacturing Practice
(GMP) throughout the whole lifecycle of a product from the early stage of development throughout production to final quality control.
Wie überzeugt man als Promovierende/r GutachterInnen und GeldgeberInnen vom
eigenen Können und Wissen, obwohl man erst am Anfang seines Forschungsprojekts
steht und den Verlauf noch gar nicht kennt? Der Workshop unterstützt (angehende)
Promovierende, diese komplexe Schreibaufgabe zu bewältigen. Die TeilnehmerInnen
erhalten Gelegenheit, ihr Exposé zu entwerfen bzw. ihre Entwürfe im Peer-Feedback
begutachten zu lassen und zu überarbeiten. Am Ende des Workshops haben sie ihr
Forschungsziel präzisiert, ihre Planung strukturiert und dadurch an Sicherheit und
vor allem an Motivation gewonnen, das geplante Projekt tatsächlich anzugehen.

This one-day course will give a comprehensive overview of the concept of quality
assurance in the framework of the pharmaceutical industry, including fundamental aspects and tools applied in practice, emphasizing on GMP. Modern approaches
of risk assessment will be addressed just as the implementation of CAPAs (corrective
and preventive actions), dealing with OOS (out of specification) results and realizing
change control in a fixed process are important issues of the course. Practical units
throughout the course will give participants the chance to practically implement the

The course is a step-by-step guide to writing and publishing a good scientific paper.
It covers the reasons for publishing, choice of journal, appreciation of audience, ethical issues, and interacting with co-authors. It discusses the planning, execution and
structure of a scientific paper, including the presentation of figures and tables. The
course then goes systematically through the different sections of a paper discussing
their purpose, content and grammar. Thereafter, the course deals with the process of
submission, communicating with editors, responding to referees’ comments and correcting proofs. Also covered are copyright problems, preprints, open access and making the most of your publication. There will be opportunities to discuss the manuscripts being prepared by course participants.

Although introversion and extroversion are well known and widely used in personality tests, there is no training that helps academics apply these attributes to their professional communication. Introverted and extroverted persons, however, have very
different ways of communicating. In academic settings, both personality types face
their own challenges:
Introverted persons may feel stress in situations such as presentations in front of larger groups, or in difficult discussion and negotiation settings. Extroverts, on the other
hand, may face disadvantages as their communication partners may wrongly assume
superficial or „unacademic“ attitudes. This workshop helps young scientists

Numerous museums and universities maintain zoological collections. This course focuses on the techniques applied to the collection, preservation, labelling, cataloguing, and maintenance of amphibians, reptiles as well as insect collections.

This workshop consists of two parts. The first part deals with entomological collections, the second part with herpetological collections. Due to the introduction to
these two fields a bigger picture of the curation of museum collections can be given.

Description
The participants will learn about important aspects of pharmaceutical production according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), about risk management in biotech
industry as well as about cutting-edge management strategies. The workshop consist
of two parts: At the beginning, the basics of project management in biotech industry,
such as regulations for the production of medical products (Medizinproduktgesetz),
GMP regulations, technical documentation and process validation of medical products, will be imparted.
Within the second part, a very important event for pharmaceutical companies will
be simulated: the GMP audit. Authorities such as US FDA use audits to identify current status of GMP compliance. Here the participants will use a fictional product and
establish a GMP environment around it. The participants will also take over the role
as auditors to find out weak points or even non-conformities in GMP when auditing
their colleagues.
Methodology
This workshop should be taken as a discussion group, where every participant can ask
questions and discuss items of personal interest. The very interactive programme will
prepare for essential aspects of biotechnological project management.

liegt, die durch Drittmittel finanziert werden. Die Teilnehmenden erfahren, welches
Programm für welchen Zweck geeignet ist und welche Voraussetzungen sie hierfür

Ein erfolgreicher Projektantrag muss unterschiedliche Anforderungen auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen erfüllen: Die eigenen wissenschaftlichen und strategischen Ziele darlegen, die Zielsetzung der jeweiligen Forschungsorganisation berücksichtigen
und die Bestimmungen und Anforderungen der Förderprogramme genauso wie die
Anforderungen des/der GutachterIn erfüllen. Dieser Workshop untersucht diese Ebenen aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln und gibt den TeilnehmerInnen Werkzeuge an
die Hand, mit denen sie ihren Projektantrag sachgerecht vorbereiten und erfolgreich
vor den GutachterInnen präsentieren. Der Workshop beinhaltet:
• Schlüsselelemente eines Forschungsantrages: Welche Anforderungen stellen
ausgewählte Förderprogramme? Worauf sollte ein Antrag unbedingt eingehen? Was gehört in einen Arbeits- und Budgetplan?
• Kriterien und Perspektiven der Begutachtung: Worauf achten Gutachtende
und was bestimmt ihre Sichtweisen?
• Aufbereitung und Darstellung von Forschungsinhalten: Wie lassen sich eigene Inhalte und Ziele kurz, komprimiert und nachvollziehbar vermitteln?
Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Formulierung einer überzeugenden
Antragszusammenfassung gerichtet.
• Simulation einer Wettbewerbssituation: Wie wirkt die eigene Darstellung
auf andere? Lassen sich Außenstehende von dem Vorhaben überzeugen?

2015. Since 2016 he is a member of the Marie S.-Curie Actions (MSCA) and European
Research Council (ERC) team
in Bonn.
The Marie S.-Curie Actions of the European Commission offer several possibilities for
young researchers to obtain funding for their own research projects. The Individual
Fellowships particularly support young researchers by giving them the opportunity
to work on a chosen research project in a high-level research institution in an EU
Member State, Associated Country or a Third Country for one or two years.
The second part of this workshop will deal with the Starting and Consolidator Grant
Schemes of the European Research Council (ERC). Starting and Consolidator Grants
are aimed at promising researchers, who are at the beginning of an independent research career, by funding the creation or consolidation of their first research team.

GRADE workshops are open to all GRADE members. The allocation of places is based
on a »first come, first serve« principle. Online registration is compulsory through the
GRADE homepage (www.grade.uni-frankfurt.de). Upon being confirmed by GRADE,
the registration will become valid and binding.
Anmeldung:
Die Teilnahme an GRADE-Workshops ist für alle GRADE-Mitglieder offen. Die Vergabe der Plätze erfolgt nach dem Zeitpunkt der Anmeldung. Eine Online-Anmeldung
über die GRADE-Homepage (www.grade.uni-frankfurt.de) ist verpflichtend. Die Anmeldung ist erst nach einer Rückbestätigung von GRADE gültig und verbindlich.
Cancellation:
The cancellation of participation in a workshop will only be permitted in urgent cases
and has to be communicated at least five working days before the event. Only written
cancellations sent to [email protected] will be accepted. In case of
cancellation at a later date, only illness cofirmed by a medical certificate to be submitted within five working days will be accepted as valid reason. Non-participation
in the workshop for other reasons or unexcused absence will be invoiced with 25,00
EUR. Furthermore GRADE reserves the right to keep the participant on a waiting list
or exclude him/her from further workshops. This rule also applies to already confirmed workshop participation.
Stornierung:
Eine Stornierung der Teilnahme ist nur in dringenden Fällen möglich und muss mindestens fünf Werktage vor Workshopbeginn in schriftlicher Form an [email protected] erfolgen. Im Falle einer späteren Stornierung kann als Grund nur

Die Qualifizierungsangebote des Career Centers umfassen unter anderem folgende

Das Ziel des Career Services ist es, Studierende zu befähigen, sich sowohl frühzeitig
mit Fragen der Karriereentwicklung und Berufswahl auseinanderzusetzen als auch
bei dem Übergang in das Berufsleben zu unterstützen. Dies erfolgt zum einen über
die Stärkung der Berufsfähigkeit durch Vermittlung beruflicher Schlüsselqualifikationen, zum anderen durch den Ausbau der Handlungsressourcen beim Berufsübergang und über Unterstützungsangebote zum Aufbau beruflicher Netzwerke. Die
Berufswahl und Karriereentwicklung kann nur dann nachhaltig sein, wenn Studierende ihr individuelles Profil, unter anderem also ihre Stärken, Interessen und Werte
in ihre Entscheidungsprozesse einbeziehen. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, verfolgt der

FrauenmitFormat (FmF) verfolgt mit einem neuen Koordinationsbüro auf dem Campus Westend der Goethe-Universität das Ziel, berufstätige Frauen aus Wissenschaft
und Wirtschaft zu verbinden, um deren persönliche Karriereplanung aktiv zu begleiten und verkrustete Strukturen langfristig aufzubrechen. FmF bietet Kontakte
zur Wirtschaft, zu zahlreichen weiblichen Führungskräften, Stiftungen und Institutionen und koordiniert diese mit interessierten Ansprechpartnerinnen der Goethe
Universität. Ein weiteres Ziel von FmF ist es, Frauen zu Beginn ihres Karriereweges
durch Vorbilder, sogenannte „Role Models“ zu motivieren. .
Die geringeren Karrierechancen von Frauen im Vergleich zu Männern basieren nicht
auf fachlichen Qualifikationsunterschieden, sondern resultieren aus strukturellen
Bedingungen. Männlich geprägte Fachkulturen, Mangel an weiblichen Vorbildern
und tradierte Rollenerwartungen tragen zum „Glass-Ceiling-Effekt“ bei, der qualifizierten Frauen eine Karriere in der Wissenschaft und im Beruf erschwert. Daher
hat es sich als förderlich erwiesen, Programme zur Karriereentwicklung speziell für
Frauen anzubieten. Sie ermöglichen die Berücksichtigung besonderer Bedarfslagen,
bieten einen Raum zum Austausch gemeinsamer Erfahrungen und erleichtern es,
Genderaspekte einzubeziehen.

Wir laden daher weibliche Persönlichkeiten ein, wie erfolgreiche Unternehmerinnen, Gründerinnen und potentielle Mentorinnen. Dies geschieht im Rahmen von
informellen Treffen mit Kurzvortrag. Hier sollen dann Kontakte geknüpft, Fragen
gestellt und Informationen auch zu eher sensiblen Themen wie Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten und Gehaltsvorstellungen ausgetauscht werden. Abgesehen davon unterstützen

The GWC is the first port of call for GU’s international researchers, scientists and their
families seeking advice, support and services regarding a research post at Goethe
University. GWC caters mainly for the following target groups:

Goethe-Unibator offers a comprehensive range of services for entrepreneurs accompanying them from the development of creative ideas via the analysis and critical
evaluation of the project to the optimized business plan and the marketability. Within the bounds of Unibator all young scientists are offered an active interaction with
organizations. Furthermore there is a possibility for students to use office infrastructure, including rooms and network connection of the university, to help develop and
test business ideas. In order to participate with a project in Unibator it is required to
subsequently fulfill presented standards. The objective of Unibator is to materialize
business ideas by supporting the conceptional phase to generate a solid business plan.
Furthermore, Unibator offers a number of lectures and seminars on important aspects of becoming an entrepreneur.
In order to make international researchers’ relocation preparations, arrival and stay
in Frankfurt as comfortable as possible, the GWC team supplies information, advice
and targeted help for all matters concerning work and life in Frankfurt. GWC cooperates closely with other service facilities at GU as well as the City of Frankfurt to offer
the following services:
• The GWC supports international researchers dealing with formalities inand outside GU (e.g. Residents Registration Office, Immigration Authority
and Health Insurance etc.) including individual accompaniment to these
offices.
• The GWC offers an extensive program of activities for GU’s international
post-doc researchers and their families. GWC’s events and excursions are
designed to foster social integration into Frankfurt and Hessen. Monthly
international lunches, hiking trips, cultural events and city tours serve as a
platform for networking and exchange amongst expat researchers.
• As part of its accommodation service GWC administers 42 fully-equipped
guest flats in three guest-houses (not available for international PhDs).
Moreover the GWC maintains an accommodation database with private
rentals and lots of information about renting in Frankfurt.
• For families of international researchers the GWC in close cooperation with
GU’s Family Service offers support regarding issues like childcare, kindergartens, schooling and formalities related.
• The GWC host programme is another great possibility for further social
integration into Frankfurt’s local society and culture.

Das GraduiertenCenter Sozialwissenschaften (GRASOC) bündelt die Graduiertenförderung für Promovierende und PostDocs am Fachbereich Gesellschaftswissenschaften der Goethe-Universität. Ziel ist es, Promovierenden die bestmöglichen
Bedingungen für eine erfolgreiche Promotion zu gewährleisten und die Karriereentwicklung von PostDocs durch gezielte Trainings- und Beratungsangebote zu fördern.
Dabei sehen wir die Funktion des GRASOC auch als eine Plattform, die zu einer
besseren Selbstorganisation und Vernetzung der Promovierenden beitragen soll.

The Hochschulrechenzentrum (HRZ) provides a wide range of IT services to the university and its members: guaranteeing a robust infrastructure for voice and electronic
communication, hosting central IT systems, maintaining public workplaces … these
are just a few of its multifaceted tasks.
Also, supporting the university’s staff in using their electronic office equipment has
been good practice for the past 25 years. A programme in support of students, »Studieren mit dem PC«, was inaugurated in 2007.

Das GRASOC verbessert mit seinem Angebot an fachlichen und außerfachlichen Betreuungs- und Qualifikationsmaßnahmen die Promotionsbedingungen und trägt zur
Steigerung der Qualität der Dissertationen bei. Die konkrete Ausgestaltung des Programms wird im Dialog mit den Promovierenden und ihren BetreuerInnen entwickelt.
Das GRASOC unterstützt die Eigeninitiative von jungen WissenschaftlerInnen, die
sich in themenzentrierten Arbeitsgruppen, sogenannten DocAGs, vernetzen und
Fördermittel beantragen können. Weitere Qualifizierungsangebote für Promovierende und PostDocs beinhalten u.a. Kolloquien und Kongresse sowie bedürfnisorientierte Methodentrainings und Workshops zu Schlüsselkompetenzen, sofern sie fachbereichsspezifischer Natur sind.

In cooperation with GRADE, the HRZ offers short seminars on Computer Literacy
for graduate students. It covers popular IT-related topics that are relevant to junior
scholars’ research work.
You may be quite content using your own PC the way you do. So why bother?
By providing fundamental knowledge, HRZ seminars will help you work efficiently
by making the right decisions. Which software is adequate for my project? How timeconsuming will it be? Which errors should be avoided?
Topics include:
• Writing a thesis – Word or LaTeX?
• Visualizing data – Excel or Origin?
• Presentations – why limit yourself to PowerPoint?
• Essentials on PDF – there is more to know than meets the eye
• Graphics – there is much more to know than meets the eye

Das Interdisziplinäre Kolleg Hochschuldidaktik (IKH) hat das Ziel, eine hohe Qualität der Lehre an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt zu sichern und weiter zu fördern.
Über die Angebote und Maßnahmen des IKH soll eine Professionalisierung der Lehre an der Goethe-Universität gestärkt werden. Die Angebote und Maßnahmen stehen
allen Lehrenden der GU offen und umfassen die hochschuldidaktische Qualifizierung, den disziplinären und interdisziplinären Austausch und verschiedene Beratungsangebote. Darüber hinaus betreibt das IKH selbst pädagogisch-psychologische
Forschung im Kontext des Lehrens und Lernens im Erwachsenenalter.

Der Frauenanteil an den Professuren liegt in Deutschland derzeit bei 21,3 %. In den
profilbestimmenden C 4 und W 3-Professuren ist er mit 17, 3 % geringer. Hessen bewegt sich im Bundesdurchschnitt. Es besteht eine Förderlücke bezogen auf den Übergang von der Promotion/Habilitation in die Professur, durch die der Wissenschaft
Jahr für Jahr viele hoch qualifizierte Wissenschaftlerinnen verloren gehen. Die fünf
hessischen Universitäten haben diese Herausforderung mit einem attraktiven Mentoring-Programm zur Förderung des Professorinnennachwuchses (ProProfessur) angenommen, seit 2010 wird das Programm von ihnen gemeinsam finanziert.
Description
Über einen Zeitraum von 18 Monaten werden 45 ausgewählte, sehr gut qualifizierte
Wissenschaftlerinnen im Status von fortgeschrittenen Postdoktorandinnen, Habilitandinnen, Privatdozentinnen und Juniorprofessorinnen aller Fachrichtungen gefördert. Sie werden durch ein aufeinander abgestimmtes Set von Beratung, Begleitung
und Qualifizierung auf dem Weg in die Professur unterstützt, um ihre akademische
Karriere zu beschleunigen. Dies erfolgt im Rahmen der drei klassischen MentoringBausteine:
• Individuelles Mentoring
Passgenau zum fachlichen Profil jeder Mentee und ihren konkreten Unterstützungsbedarfen werden bundesweit insgesamt 45 Professorinnen/Professoren als Mentorinnen/Mentoren akquiriert, die das Anforderungsprofil
an eine Professur im jeweiligen Fach sehr genau kennen. Auf dieser Basis
wird gemeinsam eine maßgeschneiderte Karrierestrategie für jede Mentee
entwickelt.

The FuN team advises and supports the university council in structural issues of research, research funding and the promotion of young scientists.
The internal university-owned funding programme “Junior researchers in Focus”
offers scientific qualification during the postdoctoral stage. This competitive funding
programme sustainably strengthens the academic independency of junior researchers, supports the scientists’ own research projects and the building up of their own
research groups.
• Wissenschaftsspezifische Intensivtrainings
Qualifiziert werden die Mentees in sechs zweitägigen Intensivtrainings
zu den Themen: Potenzialanalyse und Zielfindung, Berufungsverfahren,
Forschungsförderung und Drittmittelakquise, Work-Life-Balance und
Genderkompetenz, Führungsanforderungen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb und
Hochschulmanagement für Erstberufene.
• Strategisches Networking
Networking wird auf drei Ebenen realisiert: Netzwerkerweiterung durch
Auswahl von Mentorinnen/Mentoren, die noch nicht im Netzwerk der
Mentee sind, durch thematische Podiumsdiskussionen z. B. mit Gutachterinnen/Gutachtern peer-reviewter Zeitschriften und durch die interdisziplinäre Vernetzung auf der Ebene der Mentee-Gruppe selbst.
Die Ausschreibung für den nächsten ProProfessur-Durchgang wird voraussichtlich
im Dezember 2017 erfolgen. Die Bewerbungsfrist würde dann bis Ende Januar 2016

Als Schreibzentrum fördern wir die Kompetenzentwicklung im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen und professionellen Schreibens und Lesens in den Geisteswissenschaften. Beides verstehen wir als erlernbares Handwerk. Unser Ziel ist es daher, Studierende und Promovierende beim wissenschaftlichen Schreiben und Denken zu
unterstützen. Unser Angebot besteht aus Kursen und Workshops zum wissenschaftlichen, aber auch zum journalistischen und kreativen Schreiben. Daneben geben wir
Studierenden und Promovierenden in individuellen und nicht-direktiven Schreibberatungen ein Feedback auf ihre jeweiligen Schreibprojekte (Anmeldung unter

SciMento-hessenweit is a mentoring program for women from the five universities
in Hesse – Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Gießen, Kassel and Marburg. Its aim is to encourage and support female PhD candidates and postdocs in their scientific careers in
order to support a long-term increase in the number of female professors and help
women to succeed in top positions in academic management and industry. SciMentohessenweit supports highly qualified and dedicated female scientists in their career
endeavours through guidance and advice from a group of three or four other female
scientists and a professor for a duration of two years. An evaluation of the project over
the years 2008 to 2010 showed that SciMento improved the individual perspectives of
the mentees with long-lasting effects. SciMento-hessenweit is an instrument of personnel development that helps universities and research institutions to develop the
potential of female high achievers, who are indispensable to both the German and
the international scientific community.
Description
SciMento-hessenweit supports selected PhD candidates and female postdocs by offering the possibility of participating in a peer and group mentoring scheme. A female or male professor and a woman with a leading position in industry is assigned to
each group, whom the mentees will meet on a regular basis to discuss each woman’s
career development. This group approach fosters self-reflection as well as the ability to communicate and work successfully in a team. Following the principle of selforganization, the mentees will organize their meetings autonomously to meet their
particular needs and they discuss relevant subjects for the meetings with their mentors to develop the best career path in either science or industry. In addition to the

Objective
Do you want to know more about cultural and historical sites of Frankfurt and become better connected with other PhD students? GRADE invites all members to
participate in the series Social Events that may open the opportunity to meet other
international PhD students from all faculties of Goethe University and associated
institutes. We will visit a variety of cultural and historical sites to learn more about
German culture, regional habits and the historical importance of the respective sites.
Afterwards, all participants are invited to a café for a free drink. In a relaxed atmosphere everybody has the chance to exchange ideas and opinions and to make new
and interesting contacts. The common language is English although international
participants may have the chance to test and improve their German language skills.

Coaching was originally developed for executives and has proved its worth in the
business as well as in the academic world. The sessions provide individual support –
for instance in orientation phases (e.g. during the transitional period from a course
of study to the doctoral phase or to a career upon completion of one’s dissertation), in
situations in which it is necessary to clarify a question or solve a specific problem, or
in crisis situations, which are not necessarily a part of the research process but which
do arise from time to time.

Research within GRADE BioMed FIRST, the »Frankfurt International Research
School for Translational Biomedicine«, focuses on biomedical research in five areas:
• Research in inflammation and pain focuses on various diseases and covers
the entire value chain of drug discovery from target identification to clinical
trials.
• The scope of cardiovascular research integrates investigations at the molecular and cellular level, at the level of isolated organs, as well as in animal
models and in humans to develop novel therapeutic targets and/or strategies.

• The research area of biologicals has already established the structure of an
early drug pipeline. Novel drug targets for cancer, cardiovascular diseases
and inflammatory disorders are identified/validated.
One of the most important aspects connecting these areas is translational medicine,
i.e. the transfer of knowledge from basic science and findings in the laboratory to testable hypotheses for evaluation in clinical trials. The Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt
and the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute in Langen have joined the Goethe University to address different aspects of drug research from basics up to clinical development:

GRADE BioMed FIRST is devoted to the interdisciplinary research training of outstanding PhD students in translational biomedicine with a focus on drug research,
development and safety. However, we must stress that the development of drugs is not
the primary aim. Rather, GRADE BioMed FIRST provides an education for PhD students who will later establish careers in these areas, both in academia and industry.
To this aim, we offer a »Core Curriculum on drug research, development and safety«
with 12 modules covering the value chain of drug development. The integration of
pharmaceutical companies within the educational programme highlights the interest
of non-academic institutions in this education concept and guarantees a practically
orientated curriculum tailored to the future needs of biomedical research and will
help to overcome the barriers between academia and industry.

• The function of our brain markedly exceeds the sum of its parts. Neuronal
coordination, i.e. the spatio-temporal interaction of the activity of local,
interareal, and inter-hemispheric distributed neuronal ensembles, is thought
to constitute a pivotal mechanism of all higher brain functions. On the other
hand, disordered neuronal coordination is associated with frequent neurological and psychiatric disorders.
• Visual perception is one of the most important and promising areas of
computational neuroscience and neurotechnology. One goal is to understand the principles linking neural and cognitive levels of brain and mind
and to exploit these principles for the development of new cognitive vision
technology.
These four main research areas are complemented by several working groups at all
involved institutions subsumed within the Interdisciplinary Center for Neuroscience
Frankfurt (ICNF) including a broad range of topics, e.g. the molecular bases of higher
brain functions, neuropharmacology, and neurocognition.
Objective
The most important aim of GRADE Brain is to pool the interdisciplinary expertise in
neurosciences of six faculties of the Goethe University Frankfurt as well as of several
institutions such as the Max Planck Institutes for Brain Research and of Biophysics,
the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and the Ernst Strüngmann Institute.
The integration into interdisciplinary networks will allow PhD students and postdocs
to complement disciplinary perspectives by dealing with topics covering the different
levels of neuroscience from single genes or molecules via cells to cellular networks
and behaviour. These topics require different techniques of molecular biology, systems neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience and clinical research as well as computational neuroscience and neurotechnology. As it is not possible to become an expert in
all these areas, it is essential to provide basic knowledge in many of these areas and
to teach how to communicate effectively between the different fields. As a part of
GRADE, the centre focuses on the support of doctoral candidates and junior scientists
by offering research seminars and lectures as well as events such as an annual meeting in cooperation with the ICNF.

Research Focus
In times of profound and rapid changes in technological and social environments,
learning and teaching can be considered as a focal requirement, challenging individuals, schools and educational organizations. Based on the premise that individual, socio-cultural and situational circumstances of learners and teachers as well as
thematic issues shape educational processes and results, studies in educational sciences and subject specific pedagogies (didactics) at the GRADE Centre Education
will primarily focus on organizing principles of those processes. This includes the
justification of learning objectives as well as the thorough selection, legitimization
and methodological structuring of learning and teaching in different academic disciplines. Research on classroom interaction and the effects of teaching methods will
be complemented by studies of learners’ internal processes, most notably knowledge
creation and changes in their perceptions and attitudes. The key questions pursued
are: How are educational settings commonly organized? What do we know about
appropriate teaching practices in different disciplines? Which teaching and learning arrangements meet the needs of heterogeneous learner groups? What structural
and organizational developments on the level of schools and politics can improve
educational processes? Within the GRADE Centre Education these questions will be
addressed from the perspectives of various disciplines ranging from educational sciences and subject specific pedagogies (didactics) to psychology, sociology, linguistics,
political science and (educational) economics. Following a broad understanding of
these disciplines, latest findings of subject specific pedagogies (didactics) as well as of
educational sciences are combined in order to advance interdisciplinary research on
teaching and learning processes.

The GRADE Centre Education aims at the initiation, alliance and support of research
projects in educational sciences and subject specific pedagogies (didactics). Based on a
broad understanding of the respective disciplines, the structure of the centre puts an
emphasis on supporting PhD and Post-Doc candidates in developing viable and significant research questions meeting the highest international standards. Moreover,
the GRADE Centre Education with its various subject and method-specific seminars
as well as lectures with internal and external experts aims at supporting the successful and timely completion of methodically suitable, correct and thematically plausible

Research Focus
Already being the academic home for more than 220 graduate students from about 40
countries, the vision of GRADE GSEFM Economics, Finance, Management is to establish one of the premier centers in Europe for research-oriented doctoral education
in economics, finance, and management. Research at GSEFM features an emphasis
on applied and interdisciplinary analyses of relevance to society as a whole through
a research focus on institutions. Exemplary for this research is work undertaken on
financial stability and its impact on the economy at large; on monetary and fiscal policy in an integrating world; on incentives and economic behavior; on labor market institutions; and on the legal foundations of policy design, to name only a few. GSEFM
doctoral students benefit from interaction with close to 60 faculty members from
Goethe University Frankfurt, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Darmstadt
University of Technology. GSEFM faculty members are involved in key international

All Ph.D. programs at GSEFM involve a two-year course phase and a dissertation
writing phase. The first-year courses provide the methodological and analytical foundations for research in economics and business administration, while the second-year
courses are designed to allow catching up with the research frontier in a student’s
select areas of specialization. Specializations offered at GSEFM include Development
and International Economics, Econometrics, Finance, Law and Economics, Macroeconomics, Management and Microeconomics, as well as Marketing. The Ph.D. program curricula beyond this course phase pay special attention to helping doctoral

School for Hadron and Ion Research “HGS-HIRe for FAIR”, which is a joint endeavour
of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, the universities in Darmstadt, Frankfurt (GRADE – Goethe Graduate Academy), Giessen, Heidelberg and Mainz together with the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS)
to promote and support structured PhD education for research associated with GSI
and FAIR.

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung operates a large-scale worldwide-unique accelerator facility for heavy ions. Scientific research has provided an
increasingly comprehensive insight into the structure of matter and the development
of the universe. At the same time, the new insights have generated many technical
developments and applications. We owe the majority of the insights attained to experiments at accelerator facilities.
A key instrument for research at GSI is its accelerator facility. In a combination of a
linear accelerator and a synchrotron, charged atomic nuclei, led by magnetic fields,
are accelerated in huge vacuum pipes to very high velocities and subsequently shot
onto a metal foil. An analysis of the resulting “debris”, the new particles created, provides new insights and findings about the structure of the investigated systems and
the powers holding them together.
The main focus of the GSI research programme is basic investigation in the fields of
nuclear physics and atomic physics. In parallel, application-oriented research activities in materials research, plasma physics, biophysics and nuclear medicine have been
developed. To supply state-of-the-art facilities for science, the accelerator facilities
and the experiment facilities are continuously being enhanced and improved.
FAIR – future accelerator facility. In the coming years, the new international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built at GSI.
At FAIR, an unprecedented variety of experiments will be possible. Scientists from all
over the world will be able to gain new insights into the structure of matter and the
evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present.
Objective
The idea of HGS-HIRe is to provide structured doctoral education for all doctoral students who do research associated with GSI and FAIR.

Exploring language as a complex system

Research Focus
With its theme, Language as a Complex System, GRADE Language addresses a central topic of the scientific approach to human cognition. One goal of linguistic theory
is to find the specific characteristics of human language. Its structural complexity sets
it apart from other forms of communication. The notion of complexity in linguistics
can be divided into four domains representing the main research focuses of the centre:
• Domain A: Structural and grammatical complexity

Structural complexity is located on all levels of grammatical structure, as well as
at their interfaces and interactions. The quest for appropriate models of grammar,
especially across modules like phonology, syntax and semantics, form the heart
of GRADE Language. Frankfurt Linguistics has a formal tradition backed by research on linguistic facts.
• Domain B: Variation in time and space
Descriptive, typological, and diachronic research on the structure of the world’s
languages is faced with a huge and rapidly expanding amount of data. Linguistics in all its variants needs a firm grip on variation in time and space. In order to
take advantage of the data, formalisms are crucial, as well as a theory exploring
universals of language.

Is full professor for Ibero-Romance Linguistics at Goethe
University and co-director
of the DFG-funded Research
Training Group “Nominal

Our understanding of the cognitive aspects of language has extended immensely
due to fast-growing research in psycho- and neurolinguistics. GRADE Language
will strive to establish a bridge between theoretical linguistics and neighbouring
disciplines dealing with language, especially psychology and neurosciences. Research on language acquisition is given a special place.
• Domain D: Formal and computational complexity
Precise and sophisticated formal theories are developing to capture and measure
the complexity of grammatical systems. The centre continues this tradition with
an interdisciplinary research at the borderline of linguistics, theoretical informatics, and philosophical logic, focusing on the development and application of
analytic tools for measuring and comparing complexity, specifically in the realm
of linguistic meaning.
Objective
The doctoral programme in linguistics is a research-oriented programme open to
high-profile graduates with a linguistic background and a strong interest in research
on grammar and language-related topics. It includes a preparatory phase with a Master’s option followed by a doctoral phase. The overall goal is to help students towards
completing a PhD that meets the highest international standards. Most students will
be trained to become academic scholars, with a firm foundation in grammatical theory.

graduate programme of the
excellence cluster.
Research Focus
We are living at a time of profound and rapid social changes. These changes are
bound up with social conflicts, both within states and beyond them. Whether it is a
matter of a just social order under conditions of »globalization« and new technological possibilities or a just »global order« in the face of scarce resources, climate change
and armed conflicts – we are confronting challenges of a new kind that cannot be
met with traditional conceptions of order. In a world of different cultural self-understandings and traditions, transnational norms and institutions are emerging whose
validity is being – and must be – placed in question. Within the Centre GRADE Normative Orders such processes will be analyzed from the standpoint of the formation
of normative orders, drawing upon disciplines ranging from philosophy and history
to political science and legal studies, in addition to ethnology, economics, theology
and sociology.
The joint themes of the Centre will be explored in three research areas:

Objective
The Centre GRADE Normative Orders is organized around the Cluster of Excellence
»Formation of Normative Orders« at the Goethe University. Graduate training is a
central concern of the Cluster. The centre perceives of the doctoral phase as the central step leading to an independent career in research. As a result our graduate support is designed to ensure that outstanding young scholars enjoy the best initial conditions for an academic career. These conditions must satisfy two requirements: they
should ensure that the members acquire independence from an early stage, while at
the same time imparting the skills required to plan their subsequent careers. In order
to promote the independent character of the doctoral phase, the curriculum is geared
primarily to the students’ independent work on their dissertations, to need-oriented, elective courses designed to support the work on the dissertation and to targeted
training of the requisite skills in methods and research design. Thus, apart from the
doctoral colloquium which runs through all stages of the programme, students are
required to take set courses only during their first year in the Graduate Programme.

Creating an overall concept for the sustainable development of
humanity

Research Focus
Sustainability is the thematic focus of GRADE Sustain. The program is based on an
established research focus of the Goethe University including the expertise from
the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities and follows a problem-oriented inter- to transdisciplinary approach to training for PhD students and postdocs.
GRADE Sustain is part of a tradition in Frankfurt that already started in 1972 with
the Procter&Gamble Sustainability Award. Furthermore, with BioFrankfurt - a highly renowned network on biodiversity - there is a drive to actively promote the idea of
biodiversity and sustainability among the population. Special emphasis is placed on
the work in school settings here.
The primary goal of the centre is to impart knowledge and to integrate into networks
that contribute to answering the following questions:
• How do issues like climate change, the loss of biological diversity and the
consumption of non-renewable resources become noticeable at different
spatial and temporal scales?

GRADE Sustain builds upon the master programme »Environmental Sciences« of the
faculties Social Sciences, Geosciences/Geography, Chemistry/Biochemistry/Pharmacy and Biological Sciences and represents a platform for training and further education of graduate students and postdocs interested in issues relating to transdisciplinary sciences of sustainability. GRADE Sustain recommends courses from the list of
regular GRADE offers but it will soon offer more and more events in different formats:
• Lecture Days with lecturers from the university and from national and
international environments to provide a scientific basis and thus creating a
broad knowledge as well as discussion basis (GRADE Sustain Lecture Series)
• Mediating tools for knowledge integration - these include, among other
things, languages, moderation and communication competencies, as well as
a cross-cultural sensitivity (e.g. Summer Schools)
• Mediating creativity-building measures and approaches that promote the
identification of problem-oriented issues
• Networking with social actors
• Identification of quality assurance methods
• A wide range of career talks
• Internships for careers outside academia (e.g. Pioneers into Practice)
GRADE Sustain intends to promote the exchange at national and international levels.
Therefore, GRADE Sustain seeks the role of a network within the network in order to
offer young scientists a widest possible variety and best contacts.
