THIS WEEK’S NEWS BRIEFS
Local robbery suspect attempts
another bank heist in Burleson
By Ben Posey
A suspect in a local bank
robbery was unsuccessful in
an attempted robbery at the
American National Bank in
Burleson on Monday afternoon.
Police stated that the man, who
is similar in description to the
robber of the White Settlement
Wells Fargo Bank robbery,
walked into the Burleson bank
and gave the teller a note stating
he was going to rob the bank.
No weapon was displayed in the
attempted robbery. The robber
fled before he got any cash.
He is described as a Hispanic
male in his late 20’s to early 30’s,
5’8” tall with a thin to medium
build. He was wearing a black
cap, black-rimmed glasses and
black clothing.
Anyone with any information
in either bank robbery is asked to
call crime stoppers or the White
Settlement Police Department
at 817-246-7070.

WHITE SETTLEMENT ISD AND THE CITY OF WHITE SETTLEMENT
White Settlement ISD invites the community to kick off the Royal
Revolution campaign during a pep rally at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug.
20 in Brewer High School’s Bear Stadium. Superintendent Audrey
Arnold will share her vision to paint the town blue during the
coming school year.
The event will include performances by the Brewer band, drill
team and cheerleaders and the 2009-2010 football players will be
introduced.
Mike Flynt, author of “The Senior,” will be the featured speaker.
The biggest regret of Flynt’s life was being kicked off his college
football team before his senior year and the impact it had on his
teammates. Thirty-seven years later at age 59, the grandfather
returned to Sul Ross State and made the team, determined to tackle
his dreams and make things right. Visit www.mikeflynt.com for

Proposed Tax Increase and Monday Night’s
Workshop
A proposed tax increase was the first item on
the agenda last night at the White Settlement
City Council meeting held at City Hall.
The increase was also discussed at length at
Monday night’s budget workshop, held to
discuss the tax rate and the revenue needed
for the budget for the coming year.
At the budget workshop on Monday City
Manager Jimmy Burnett presented to the
council several items such as an insurance
comparison for city employees. Burnett also
gave different figures to council for cost of
living salary increases and merit increases
for city employees, although the final budget
FLYING HIGH

did not included those raises.
Items deleted from the previously presented
budget were a full time secretary for the city
manager and the assistant finance director
position. Also, on the proposed budget a
position in purchasing was replaced by a
position in the animal control office. All of
these changes and deletions in the budget
reflect the city’s efforts to make budget cuts
where possible.
Also at the meeting, Burnett explained
that there would need to be a 13% increase
in sewer rates due to Fort Worth raising the
rates it charges White Settlement. These
sewer rates could possibly be adjusted again
in favor of the customers once the Farmers
Branch Project is completed.
on Monday, Burnett asked council members
if they had any questions or concerns about
the budget or the proposed tax increase, but
no council members voiced objections or
concerns at that time.
At last night’s meeting, Assistant City
Manager Linda Ryan presented the tax
increase proposal to the council.
The
proposed increase is seven cents, which will
raise the rate from .613727 to .686037, and
is said to be needed to help the city deal with
increased debt service thanks in part to the
bond that was voted on by the citizens to pay
for the Farmers Branch project. If passed, the

A 51-year-old Azle man confessed to six bank robberies after
being arrested this past week on a parole
violation warrant at a motel in south Fort
Worth. Police said the man, Delbert Bustos,
was involved in five Fort Worth robberies
and one in Lake Worth.
Police received a tip that a man, who
resembled surveillance photographs of the
bank robber, was staying at the Microtel

Bank on Summit Avenue, the Bank of America on South Hulen,
Southwest Bank on SW Loop 820 and the Bank of Texas in Lake
Worth.
Stabbing victim flags down police Saturday
By Ben Posey
A 62 year-old man walking in
the 9300 block of Silver Creek
Road and Loop 820 flagged
down a passing Fort Worth
Police Officer early Saturday
morning after being stabbed in
the neck. Police summoned an
ambulance to the location, which
transported the victim to a local
hospital.
According to a police statement,
the victim knew the suspect by
name and only identified the
suspect as a male in his mid-40’s.
The suspect was not on-scene.
The condition of the victim

By Ben Posey
A fire in a trash compactor at the rear of
the Lowe’s home improvement store had
firefighters from both White Settlement

prevent further damage to the building.
The incident occurred around lunchtime
on Saturday in the 600 block of Highway

here are three big
releases landing on
the big screen this
weekend. First up we have
the R rated comedy The Goods
starring Jeremy Piven. This
film is about a rag tag group
of hucksters who put on a
crazy sales event at a used car
lot in an attempt to sell every
single car in stock in a single
weekend. The movie looks
outrageously crazy and if the
crudeness isn’t too “in your
face” it may be a great choice
for anyone looking for comedy
this weekend.
Next up is The Time
Traveler’s Wife. This
adaptation of the celebrated
romance novel stars Rachel
McAdams and Eric Bana. This
is a love story about a woman
who falls in love with and
marries a man who randomly
travels through time and is
gone for extended periods of
time. While it sounds zany it’s
a well-loved story and it should
be a great choice for fans of

romantic films.
Also releasing this weekend
is the science fiction film
District 9. This film is being
eagerly anticipated by sci-fi
fans as it tells the story of an
alien ship stuck on Earth.
The aliens are quarantined by
humans, and the story of what
is being done to them in their
small district is at the center of
this film. This looks to be one
of the best sci-fi films in years
and one that anyone who likes
movies of this genre should
definitely head out to see.
Landing on DVD this week
you’ve got the buddy comedy
I Love you, Man as well as the
excellent 17 Again. Both of
these new DVD releases are
available in stores now.

TOP TEN: MOVIES (FIFTH IN A SERIES)
By A.C. Hall
Ah… the top 10 list. Loved by all, written by many, this ongoing
feature will count down my top ten lists in several categories of
entertainment. Want to see your top 10 movie list printed in this very
paper? Send it in to [email protected] and we’d love to run it!
NUMBER SIX: THE SALTON SEA
There are few actors that confuse me the way Val Kilmer does. At
times he’s as brilliant and as talented as anyone else working, and at
others he puts forth uninspired, boring performances in strange films.
However, when the man is “on” he’s one of the absolute best and if
you want proof just watch The Salton Sea.
It was a close friend of mine who had me sit down and watch this
movie and I’m so thankful he did. This is among one of the most
powerful films I’ve ever seen. In it, Kilmer plays a drug addicted loser
who sometimes informs on fellow losers to a pair of local cops. As the
film progresses, you learn that there’s much more to the character and
that he may not be who he says he is at all. As he sets into motion a
convoluted plot involving multiple levels of law enforcement and a big
time drug dealer, you begin to find out exactly what it is that this man
is after.
One thing to note here is that this is a very rough film. This is a
movie about a
man going to
extreme lengths
to accomplish a
goal and he does
so by scraping
the bottom
of the society
barrel. Coming
along for this
mysterious ride
that slowly
reveals layer after
layer is one of
the true joys I’ve
gotten out of
being a movie
fan and I sit
entranced every
time I watch this
movie.
There’s not a
lot more I can
say about this
movie without
revealing too
much about the
intricate and
multi-layered plot. It really is one of the smartest, most engaging
stories I’ve ever seen in a film and Kilmer gives an unbelievable
performance in the movie. If you’ve never seen it and can stomach the
rough content (language, violence, etc…) then I highly recommend
you check it out.
READER’S TOP TEN

GI Joe:
The Rise of Cobra
A great summer
blockbuster
By A.C. Hall
With the summer movie
season wrapping up, it’s pretty
easy to see that this wasn’t a big
triumph for big blockbusters.
There were some great hits on
the big screen, but far fewer
than usual. G.I. Joe: The Rise of
Cobra was the last big chance
for Hollywood to hit a homerun
during the summer, but most
were highly skeptical of it.
The over-the-top action in the
previews looked almost goofy
and the acting looked suspect.
However, I’m extremely pleased
to say that this was a spectacular
film. It did all the great things
a summer blockbuster should
and most importantly, it avoided
the mean spirited crudeness that
Transformers 2 contained.
The main story of the film
follows soldiers Duke (Channing
Tatum) and his friend Ripcord
(Marlon Wayans) as they are
tasked to deliver a new type
of nano warhead. When their
convoy is attacked by a force
armed with far superior weapons
and armor, they are saved by
a secret squad known as G.I.
Joe. Duke and Ripcord soon
find themselves joining with this
ultra elite squad of international
soldiers as they attempt to
stop a nefarious plot by an evil
organization.
If you close your eyes and
visualize a big budget summer
blockbuster then you already
know all you need to know
about this movie. This is a
nonstop action fest that, unlike
a lot of summer blockbusters,
actually weaves in a bit of story
and character into an otherwise
uninterrupted two hour battle
scene. The movie would’ve
worked as a collection of huge
battle scenes, but it’s made even
better by some of the nicely
done storytelling techniques
that give depth to the characters
and make them a little less onedimensional.
Director Stephen Sommers
does something here that I’m
extremely pleased with. Unlike
Michael Bay and his Transformers
films, Sommers doesn’t try to
make G.I. Joe the coolest kid in
school. Where Bay goes with
dirty humor, sexed up visuals and
a generally mean-spirited attitude
aimed to please fifteen-year-olds,
Sommers instead just sticks to
making a fun movie. Sure, there
are some beautiful women in the
film and a few more curse words
than it needed, but none of it is
A Perfect Getaway
A near perfect thriller
By A.C. Hall
It’s far too easy for filmmakers
to toss together a run-of-the-mill
thriller these days. It’s a popular
genre and it doesn’t take much to
make one of these oh so ordinary
films with a flimsy mystery and
a bunch of trumped up suspense
and tension leading to a lame
reveal at the end.
None of that is true of A
Perfect Getaway. It may not be
the most unique story to come
along, but it’s such a well done
movie that you simply don’t care
about originality. It’s a brilliantly
paced film featuring some great
acting and a fun, suspenseful
story that keeps you interested
throughout.
In the film newlyweds Cliff
and Cidney (Steve Zahn and
Mila Jovovich) are on their
honeymoon in Hawaii. They’ve
decided to go on a little traveled
hike that takes you through some
secluded areas to a private beach
on the back of the
islands. Along the
way they meet two
other couples, each
of them strange in
their own way. When Cliff and
Cidney then learn that there’s
a couple murdering others on
the trail, they have to figure out
which of the two couples they’ve
encountered are the killers while
they do their best to stay a step
ahead so they can get off the trail
alive.
The thing I loved most about
this movie is how it took its time.
It’s a hard thing for a film to
pull off and most times movies
that attempt to take it slow just
end up being boring. That’s far
from the case here. The movie
progresses calmly and slowly,
giving you plenty of time to get
into the situation and to get to
know the characters involved.
It’s a pleasant way of telling the
story and one that naturally
progresses to its intense finale.
What really carries this movie
from good to great are the
performances. Steve Zahn has
always been an actor I enjoyed,
but he’s rarely done anything
focused on
and glorified
as it was in
Transformers.
There is
one thing
to consider
about this
film where
children are
concerned.
This is not
an easy-going
film when
it comes to
action. The
movie goes
all out from
start to finish
and there are
some intense
battle scenes.
While it’s enough over-the-top to
never seem like real people killing
each other, there are a few brutal
deaths and some hard hitting
action sequences.
THE VERDICT: Most
everybody around has memories
of the G.I. Joe cartoons and the
toys, and I’m extremely pleased
to be able to say that this movie
won’t completely destroy your
fond memories of the franchise.
The film almost feels borderline
sci-fi at times with its outlandish
technology and gear. The
other than really goofy roles.
Here he does a perfect job as
the slightly odd Cliff, and I
really think he showed a lot of
his talent in this role. The man
who steals the show, however, is
Timothy Olyphant. I’ve long
been a huge fan of Olyphant
and his portrayal as Nick, an exspecial forces soldier on vacation
with his girlfriend, is really
wonderful. He’s an odd, slightly
unbalanced character that is full
of charm, and he completely
dominates the second half of
this movie.
THE VERDICT: I loved this
movie. I’ve been anticipating it
for a while and sometimes that
can really work against me when

Another Tale
from an Old Timer
By Norris Chambers
Old timer wins
impossible argument!
Norris Chambers and his wife Ella
have lived in White Settlement over
60 years. They have raised a family
here and have been active in school,
city and community activities and
organizations and still enjoy being
among the world’s best people.
B
efore I became smarter I would argue
about almost anything. It didn’t matter
whether I believed in my stance, I argued
just for the fun of arguing. Perhaps that is
why Dave, a co-worker, and I entered into a
pointless argument about whether perpetual
motion is possible or not. Of course I had
the unpopular and improvable argument
that it is possible and just hasn’t been
discovered yet.
“There is a strong gravity force that
pulls downward with tremendous power!”
I told him. “Where there is power there
can be motion if it is properly applied.
There is tremendous power in the sun, the
tides and the magnetic field of the earth. A
permanent magnet exerts power in its own
way.”
His argument was the old belief that it
will take more power to harness any of this
power than can be generated from it. Of
course that has been the problem that has
kept us from using this free power.
“If I can make a little motor that will
run continuously, day and night, without
stopping, will you admit you lost the
argument?” He was quick to agree and
told me to get busy. I already had an idea
so I started making some serious looking
formulas and drawings on a clipboard and
told him I was already deep into the problem.
The paper work didn’t mean anything, but
it made the project look more impressive.
The actual work on the model would start
in my radio shop at home.
My first step in building my motor was
to take a matchstick with the striking end
removed and insert a sewing needle in each
end with the point protruding. This was to
provide a shaft for my motor that would
encounter practically no friction from the
end bearings. The needlepoints would
revolve in a slight dent in a nail on each end
of a wooden base.
I had built a similar motor a few years
earlier. The secret to success was to keep
everything very light and well balanced and
have well-tuned coils. The motor was not
perpetual motion, but someone not knowing
its secret might wonder how it continued to
run. Actually, the answer was pretty simple.
The small amount of power required for the
rotation was obtained from the broadcast
signal of a nearby radio station.
The signal was received by a loop antenna
tuned carefully to the frequency of the
station. The signal that was present was
rectified by a high frequency diode and a
condenser and was applied to the simple coil
and permanent magnet arrangement of the
motor. The rotor turned at a moderate speed
and would continue to do so as long as the
station was on the air. Luckily the strong
nearby station was on the air 24 hours a
day.
I arrived a little early the next day and
prepared to set my motor to work. Luckily,

can calm us down and lift us up.
This week I wanted to highlight
a character that I’ve been
wrapped up in this summer.
As a fan of lawyer shows, I
was pretty thrilled when I heard
about the new TNT drama
Raising the Bar last year. Starring
Mark Paul Gosselaar (best known
as Zach on Saved by the Bell,) this
show is about public defenders
and prosecutors in the New York
City courts system. The second
season is underway now, and
I continue to enjoy the great
mixture of court room drama
and great characters. But it’s one
character in particular that’s got
me hooked this season.
His name is Richard Patrick
Woolsley and he’s one of the
overworked and underpaid
public defenders in the show.
Unlike many of the other hardworking up and comers in the
office, Woolsley comes from
a very privileged background.
His father runs one of the most
successful and well respected
private law practices around, and
Richard is a multi-millionaire.
So while his co-workers are
Accounts of Red Faces
we were in an outside room with very little
steel in the structure and there was enough
signal from the station to operate my motor.
I placed it prominently on the work bench
and waited to see the expression on Dave’s
face when he arrived and saw the successful
model doing its job.
When Dave arrived, the first thing he
saw was the active motor doing its thing. He
grinned a little and said, “Well, it looks like
you got it going.” He then walked over and
inspected it closely.
“Where have you hidden the battery?”
he asked.
“No battery!” I answered. “You can take
my word for it or disassemble it and see for
yourself. It’s true perpetual motion.”
“I don’t think so.” His answer was very
positive and it was evident that further
argument would be useless. I figured it
was time to bring the subject to an end, so
I patiently explained to him how the little
motor operated on power radiated by the
radio station. Then I explained to him the
terms of our agreement and told him that I
was claiming a win for my argument.
“I guess you tricked me into losing the
argument,” he responded, “but perpetual
motion is still not possible.” I told him I
accepted his congratulations and asked him
a question.
“What do you think about the new
proposal to install speed control devices
on all automobiles and open up constant
surveillance by computer enforcement? I
think it’s a good idea.”
Another argument began. Are arguments
fun? There are many types of arguments
– you should only get involved in the FUN
types! Remember, it is more fun to win than
to lose.
working themselves to the bone
for very little money, he’s got
more than he knows how to
spend.
The details of his background
make Richard’s presence in the
public defender’s office truly
noble, as he could’ve instead
taken a million-dollar-a-year
position with his father’s firm.
But Woolsley wasn’t a big part
of the first season of the show,
and there were few stories that
focused on him.
This season, however, he’s
gotten his own story and it’s
been the best part of the show
each week. Faced with more and
more unfairness in the system
and watching hefty fines and
bad situations drown his clients,
Richard has come to struggle.
He feels almost ashamed that
he was born into a life of luxury
while so many people are
scraping just to put food on the
table or to keep a roof over their
heads.
His story has begun going
much deeper as Richard is trying
to find ways to use his money
and influence to go beyond the
system to help those in need, but
I won’t say any more so as not to
spoil anything for those who are
Detail
interested.
So why did I bother to write
about a fictional character this
week? Because I admire him.
Call it silly if you must, that
a grown man would admire
someone who doesn’t exist, but
it all comes back to my belief
in entertainment. Here’s this
character that was born with a
silver spoon in his mouth but
defied it and took on a tough,
unglamorous job. That would be
enough to make him admirable,
but now he’s going beyond that,
desperately trying to make a
difference in the world.
He may be fictitious, but the
ideas he represents are worth
aspiring to. He’s an inspiring guy
and one that I’d like to be more
like in my own life. To some
that may the definition of taking
entertainment too seriously, but
personally I don’t care where
inspiration to be a better person
comes from; I only care that it
comes at all.

City Council Meeting continued from front cover
increase will generate a thirteen percent
increase in revenue.
“The debt rate has increased to .16
compared to .13 last year,” Ryan stated.
Ryan gave some examples showing how
the tax rate will affect citizens depending on
their home value. One such example used
a $100,000 home and showed that at the
current rate it would have $490 in taxes, and
at the proposed increased rate it would have
$548.
Since those who live in White Settlement
who are over the age of 65 get an automatic
$37,000 exemption, the same example was
given that assumed the $100,000 home was
owned by someone in that age group. In that
example the taxes increased from $263 to
$295 with the new.
The proposed tax rate will continue to be
discussed and there are two public hearings set
for citizens to speak on the matter. The first
will be on Aug. 25 and the second will be on
Sept. 1.
Before moving forward, the council was
required to take a vote of record on where
they stand on the proposed increase by way of
raising hands. Council members Jack Cook,
Gene Hatcher and Garry Wilson voted in
favor of the new tax rate while members Freta
Powell and Helen Warner voted against. The
council won’t take a final vote on the matter
until sometime in September following the
two public hearings.

The
Board Appointments
Also before the council was a board
appointment to fill a vacant position on
the Board of Adjustments and Appeals.
Councilwoman Warner nominated Danny
Anderson to fill the position. The motion
to appoint him failed by a vote of two to
three with Wilson, Cook and Hatcher voting
against.
Councilman Wilson then nominated
Don Smith to fill the vacancy. There was a
discussion regarding why Wilson was able to
make a nomination for this vacancy and it
was stated that the Board of Adjustment and
Appeals members can be nominated by any
council member. They are not tied to each
council place as the positions on the Crime
Board are.
The motion to appoint Smith to the Board
of Adjustment and Appeals passed three to
two with Powell and Warner voting against.
Councilwoman Warner voiced her
frustration that her nominee had been
voted down. Mayor Burns spoke about the
appointing process, saying that it was up to
each council member to vote however they
wished.
Request for water from Chesapeake Energy
In other business the council had a request
from Chesapeake to consider for water to drill
two wells at their drilling site on S. Las Vegas
Trail.
“This is strictly for the drilling of the well,”
City Manager Burnett told the council as he
emphasized that it wouldn’t be for the fraccing
procedure done later in the drilling process.
The estimate on the water usage would be
315,000 gallons of water over 21 days for one
drill, which worked out to 625 gallons an
hour. Burnett compared the water usage to
that of a large store like Lowe’s or an apartment
complex.
“There is no problem with us getting close
to our peak load or our daily consumption,”
he told the council.
Burnett stated that water sales are currently
down and that selling this water to Chesapeake
was “certainly not going to hurt us at this
time.” He also said that by providing the
water it would keep fewer trucks on those
streets as Chesapeake would not have to bring
in the water from another location.
Councilwoman Freta Powell made a motion
to approve the request. That motion passed
unanimously.
Ordinances and Agreements
A resolution regarding an agreement
between the City of White Settlement and the
Texas Department of Transportation, Vehicle
Titles and Registration Division was also
before the council. Marshal Jeff James was on
hand to present the details of this item.
“It’s an opportunity for the City of White
Settlement to partner up with the Tax
Assessment Collector,” he told the council.
He also informed the council that this
agreement would keep an individual from
registering their car while they have an
outstanding warrant with the city. He stated
that at times those with warrants will bypass
the city and never pay their fines and that the
city currently has no recourse against that.
“This will give us the ability to redirect
them back to our city so they can pay their
fines for their warrants,” James said.
Councilman Wilson made a motion to
accept the resolution. That motion passed
unanimously.
The council also considered an ordinance
that would establish a new Flood Damage
Prevention Ordinance inside the city. This is
in response to a letter sent to the city by FEMA
and the adoption of this new ordinance would
meet a FEMA requirement. Public Works
Director Randy Brown presented this item to
the council.
“This involves the city’s flood insurance
program for our citizens,” he told the
council.
Brown said that the new ordinance contained
“two basic changes.” The first is regarding
elevations of structures within the 100 year
flood areas. Currently the requirement for
elevation is for the structure to be “elevated to
or above the 100 year flood elevation.” The
new requirement will be “two feet above the
100 year flood elevation.”
“Being a part of the flood insurance
program helps our citizens,” Brown said.
He went on to illustrate that for every foot
above the 100 year flood elevation insurance
was cheaper. The opposite also happens, with
insurance becoming more expensive for every
foot below the 100 year flood elevation.
The other change would be an update to
the new Flood Insurance Study and Flood
Insurance Rate Maps for Tarrant County
that will become effective on Sept. 25. If the
proposed ordinance passed, it would also put
these new maps into place for the city.
Councilman Cook asked if these maps were
adjusted to show the changes that will take
place due to the Farmers Branch project. He
was informed that these maps do not reflect
those changes and that they will be readjusted
once the project is completed.
Councilman Wilson made a motion to
approve the ordinance and that motion passed
unanimously.
EDC Project
A project from the city’s EDC board was
also before the council last night. At a recent
meeting the EDC heard a request from Zeke
Nikolic, one of the individuals building the
Candlewood Suites hotel next to Veterans
Park.
“He had an unforeseen situation arise with
the sewer,” EDC Director Jim Ryan informed
the council.
Nikolic needs to upgrade the sewer on the
property and came to the EDC board hoping
for some financial help to cover that unforeseen
cost. At their latest meeting the EDC board
re-allotted $50,000 in their budget to help
Candlewood.
“It’s something we would do to help any
major company or hotel to come in,” Ryan
stated, while also assuring the council that
“this will not be paid until the project is
finished.”
He also highlighted the fact that this would
not only upgrade the sewer for Candlewood
but the system in that whole area. Ryan spoke
about the city making back the money once
the hotel is open and generating tax revenues.
“We need to get him open and get him
rolling on this project. This will assist that,”
he told the council.
There was no action that needed to be taken
on this item.
Acquired Properties Auction
The council also discussed authorizing
the city manager to put on a silent auction
for items contained in properties that the
city recently acquired. The properties being
discussed are 201 and 216 Pemberton, 8127
and 8119 E Melrose, 313 and 315 Las Vegas
Trail and 300 and 304 Allencrest.
“These are houses that we’re buying out in
the Farmer’s Branch project,” Burnett told the
council.
The City Manager indicated that several
citizens had expressed an interest in
acquiring some of the appliances, heaters, air
conditioning units and many other materials
in these properties and highlighted this
as a way for the city to make back some of
the money spent on acquiring these houses.
Burnett also noted that no matter the total
amount made it would be a good move for the
city since the homes were just going to be bull
dozed anyway. He also informed the council
that Habitat for Humanity has been notified
and may be interested in some of the items.
Two citizens had requested to speak on this
matter and each of them voiced their approval
of this idea. One voiced a caution over the
proper removal of central heating and air
units.
Responding to a question, Burnett revealed
that there are “another fifteen or twenty”
homes that the city will be doing similar
auctions for in the near future.
For the silent auction to take place, the
properties needed to be declared as surplus
properties. Councilman Cook made a motion
to declare them as such and to authorize the
auction. That motion passed unanimously.
Public Comments/Council Comments
Speaking during the public comments
section of the meeting one citizen spoke
regarding the possibility that the city will
stop using The Bomber News as their official
paper. She spoke in support of The Bomber
and stated that she felt like they had done
a good job. City Manager Jimmy Burnett
answered her, saying that the only thing that
had been done was that staff had requested
ad rate sheets from The Grizzly Detail, The
Bomber News and from The Star Telegram as
part of the budget process and that they did
so.
Councilwoman Warner voiced her support
of The Bomber, saying that she felt it had
done a good job as the official paper of the
city. Councilman Cook responded, saying
that the city is trying to cut costs wherever
they can. He also said that if they made an
exception by taking a higher bidder on one
service it opened the door for others whose
bids are passed over for lower bidders to claim
the city was being unfair. Cook also clarified
that the only thing that has been done was the
ad rate sheets have been requested for review
during the budget process.
At the close of the meeting Councilman
Cook spoke regarding some events that have
been going on recently. He shared a story from
a book regarding taking pride in your work
and in your community. He then spoke about
the matter that had happened with Crime
Board appointees. He and Councilwoman
Warner have disagreed in meetings regarding
appointees to that board. After Warner used
her pick to remove Stan Bastek from that
board there has been the possibility of Cook
removing Helen’s daughter Sharon Warner
from the Crime Board as she currently sits in
the place he has the power to appoint. Cook
stated that he never wanted Stan Bastek off the
board, but also never wanted Sharon Warner
off the board. He has not yet removed Warner
from the board and indicated that he would
not be doing so anytime soon.
Cook then went on to speak about his
choice not to respond to criticism in public.
He stated that he doesn’t do so because he does
not believe people should be singled out and
that the matter should be discussed privately.
“It’s not a matter of hiding anything, it’s
just the way I live my life,” Cook said. “If you
want to know why I do something, why I vote
the way I do, please come ask me. I will be
more than happy to talk to you about it.”
In closing Cook spoke about the need
for the community to come together and
the need for unity as the city works towards
overcoming their obstacles.
