Kirk Berry - KB Enterprises
Kirklyn J. Berry, President and CEO of KB Enterprises, is an entrepreneur,
powerful keynote speaker, and director of People for People Inc., a nonprofit
organization devoted to the North Philadelphia community.
He has mentored for more than 10 years with Big Brothers Big Sisters and
Concerned Black Men CARES, among others. Kirk travels the nation delivering
discourse on the achievement of others, engaging a variety of audiences from
corporations and schools to community groups and sports teams. (He played
Division 1 football at the State University of New York at Buffalo while earning
his BBA). Kirk’s first book, 5 Powerful Tips For Motivating Youth, relates his
approach to teaching today’s adults how to foster the determination and full
potential of the adults of tomorrow.
With a personal motto “success is the art of being who you already are,” Kirk imparts his impact on the
world by furnishing others with the skills to discover their own individual P.O.W.E.R. (Positive. Opportunity.
Wisdom. Encourage. Responsible.)
Patricia Castillo, L.M.S.W. - The P.E.A.C.E. Initiative
As a Texas State Licensed Master Social Worker, Patricia S. Castillo has spent 35
years working in various capacities advocating for women and children victims of
violence, mostly domestic and family violence.
Patricia cofounded the P.E.A.C.E. (Putting an End to Abuse through Community
Efforts) Initiative, a grassroots coalition of 48 community agencies united to
develop an agenda for San Antonio to implement around the issue of family
violence. In 26 years, it has recruited and trained close to 3000 people on crisis
intervention and advocacy for victims of family violence.
She serves on the National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic
Violence Board of Directors and conducts “On the Road to Social Transformation: Utilizing Cultural and
Community Strengths to End Domestic Violence” training. She collaborates with the National Center on
Domestic and Sexual Violence and the Texas Council on Family Violence. Internationally, Patricia worked
with family violence prevention and intervention efforts in Mexico and with the U.S. State Department in
Nicaragua.
Marisa Chapa - AVANCE
Marisa Chapa is a graduate of the AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program with
27 years of experience working with this successful, proven model. Marisa has
a far-reaching background and history in the community. She also has extensive
training experience as well as knowledge of early childhood education and
parenting skills that support the further development of family, community and
leadership through two-generation programs.
As AVANCE’s National Training Coordinator, she has been instrumental in
implementing community-based training and education that has been recognized
throughout the Southwest. Her dedication and passion for AVANCE families and
her personable style allows her to interact easily with all stakeholders as well as in
the communities AVANCE serves.
Lorena Gonzalez, Ph.D. - Urban Strategies
Through speeches, training, workshops and coaching, Lorena inspires individuals to recognize and magnify
their strengths for the good of others. She is a recognized expert in creating unique, holistic approaches to
program delivery. With her colleague, Lisa Treviño Cummins, her efforts have been the catalyst to a book
project resulting in the Amazon best-selling book Inheritance: Discovering the Richness of the Latino Culture
and Family that won the International Latino Book Award. She has also been instrumental in developing a
renowned, culturally-based leadership program, The Family Leadership Institute.
In her work with Urban Strategies, Lorena provides training and technical assistance that teaches
practitioners, educators, policy makers and community leaders how to build successful community
programs that drive positive change.
In 2011, Lorena was inducted into the prestigious Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s Hall of Fame, where she received the “Optimista” award
for achieving success through persistence in the face of adversity.
Eric Johnson - AVANCE
Eric R. Johnson is a transparent, gifted storyteller and contemporary thought leader offering keen
insight into balancing the demands of personal life and family, through vision concepts, with the pursuit
of professional success. Eric’s touching story of rising from being a horseback riding country boy to a
successful author, mentor, speaker, and business owner touches audiences while challenging them to
greater achievement and to birth their vision for prosperity.
Eric is certified in Within Our Reach – Prep Inc., Couple LINKS – Love Thinks, PICK – Love Thinks, A MAP
for Marriage – Family Wellness, Active Choices/Marriages – Active Relationship Center, Why Knot –
Marriage Preparedness Facilitator, 24/7 Dad - Healthy Fatherhood Facilitator, and Dynamic Marriage
Facilitator – Family Dynamics. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services. Eric cofounded Optimum
Life Fellowship where he is Lead Pastor and serves on the Board of the Greater Houston Healthy
Marriage Coalition. He also serves as president of the New South Union Civic Association and a member
of the South East Houston Transformation Alliance steering committee. Eric proclaims that his greatest
and most cherished position and accomplishment in life is his role as husband and father of six amazing daughters.
John Lewis - Urban Strategies
John Lewis is responsible for leading Urban Strategies’ collaborative efforts focused on serving
communities in need in the Southern California region. He has expertise in conducting outreach to
diverse organizations and community members working across multiple fields to accomplish shared
goals. He has managed partnerships with 19 community and faith-based organizations in Southern
California and managed extensive TA to sub-award recipients.
John led a Southern California collaborative over four years that served 1,500 low income fathers with
parenting classes, relationship enhancement and connecting them to the tools to prepare for them to
seek employment or advancement to better support the needs of their families. During this time, he
learned the valuable lesson that these tools cannot be received until the fathers have felt supported
by caring individuals that were building “hope” that had been lost in many of the consequences from
choices made in the past. This led the collaborative to have amazing success in preparing to reconnect
and successfully engage fathers back into their children’s lives with the needed skills after rebuilding hope in their lives.
Noelita Lugo - Office of the Attorney General Child Support Division
Noelita Lugo currently serves as the Director of Family Initiatives in the Office of the Attorney General’s
Child Support Division. As the Director of Family Initiatives, she leads a multi-disciplinary team who
develop and evaluate innovative projects improving outcomes for Texas families through collaborative
partnerships with federal, state, and local governments and community-based organizations.
Her work with the Child Support Division over the past 16 years has ranged from direct service delivery
to legislative and policy analysis to program implementation, evaluation, and management. Noelita is
a native Texan and holds a dual bachelor degrees in English and Psychology and a Master of Science in
Social Work from the University of Texas. She holds a deep commitment to seeing that children benefit
from the support, involvement, and care of both parents.
Manuel Montemayor - AVANCE
Manuel Montemayor, Jr. is a passionate leader who brings his work experience from several fortune
500 companies such as Target Corporation, Wells Fargo, and HSBC Bank. Manuel graduated from
the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a Bachelor of Business Administration – Finance and a
Master of Education in Educational Administration. During the last five years he has worked in grant
administration and has successfully assisted organizations secure federal grant funding.
Manuel serves as Program Coordinator for Fathers in Action in the Rio Grande Valley. He is certified in
National Fatherhood Practitioner by Fathers & Families Coalition of America, Evaluation Practice from
Temple University, and Nurturing Fathers Curricula Training by Nurturing Fathers, Inc.
Cynthia Osborne, Ph.D. - Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs
Cynthia Osborne, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Director of the Child and Family Research
Partnership at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.
Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of social policy, poverty and inequality,
family and child well-being and family demography. She has extensive experience in longterm evaluations of state and national programs, including the Texas Health and Human Services
Commission’s Home Visiting Program and paternity, child support and teen education programs of
the Texas Office of the Attorney General.
Cynthia joined the faculty of the LBJ School of Public Affairs in 2005 after completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Center for Research on Child Wellbeing at Princeton University,
where she earned her Ph.D. in Demography and Public Affairs. She holds a master’s degree in
Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School.
Blanca Regalado - AVANCE
Blanca Regalado believes in AVANCE’s principles that education begins at birth and the impact parents
have is essential to the child’s development. To this end, she has dedicated more than 12 years to AVANCE
parents and children as an Early Head Start Home Educator, Parent-Child Education Program Center
Director and Parent Educator, and Coordinator of Parenting Services. Currently, she serves as Director of
Program Services for AVANCE and is the Project Director for Fathers in Action.
Blanca earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in education from The
University of Texas at San Antonio and her General Nonprofit Leadership Management Certification from
Our Lake of the Lake University. She also spent time as a middle school teacher before joining AVANCE.
Zeke Romo - C2 Global Professional Services
Zeke Romo is the Deputy Director for Community Outreach and System Integration for C2 Global
Professional Services (C2 GPS), the contractor for Workforce Solutions Alamo to operate the workforce
centers in the Alamo region. This includes five Centers in Bexar County and ten other Centers or satellite
offices in the surrounding 11 counties. His responsibilities are to build and maintain partnerships in
support of the workforce system, and to oversee the Business Services component which provides
services to employers so they can locate the best qualified job candidates.
He has over 30 years of experience in workforce and economic development in the state of Texas.
In other capacities he has operated workforce systems in the Gulf Coast, El Paso, Tarrant County,
South Plains, Brazos Valley, and the Coastal Bend area. He started as a Youth Counselor under the
Comprehensive Employment and Training Administration and the Job Training Partnership Act. He has
worked in almost all positions in workforce development.
Vicente Sanchez - VENT Program
Vicente Sanchez is one of AVANCE’s first success stories, having graduated from one of the first classes in
San Antonio in 1973 with his mother. Vicente has gone to serve his community in many capacities as well
as further his education. Vicente served and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. He
earned his associates in Child Development from San Antonio College before moving on to his bachelor’s
and graduate degrees from the University of Texas at San Antonio in Mexican American Studies and
Counseling, respectively.
After building a resume at several area nonprofits working with families since 2002, including AVANCE,
Vicente is now the President and CEO of VENT Program Services at The Neighborhood Place. Violence,
Education & Nurturing Training (VENT) was established as a 501(c)3 on January 12, 2015, in an effort to
provide San Antonio and the surrounding communities training and education on topics that contribute
to healthy families and effective parenting. VENT was founded in the philosophy that family violence,
abuse and neglect should not define a child’s childhood. Instead, children should experience healthy environments and interactions
that will help them thrive and reach their full potential.
Rodalyn Skinner Davis - AVANCE-Houston
An accomplished speaker, leader and trainer, Rondalyn Skinner Davis’ career spans more than 25 years
in social services, education, and mental wellness. She currently serves as the Sr. Director of ERSEA,
Child and Family Support Services and Quality Assurance for Child Care Partnerships for AVANCE –
Houston, Incorporated. In her capacity, she advocates for the success of children and families through
education and provides leadership and support to more than 5o team members.
As a Sr. Director, Rondalyn oversees and coordinates the operations of several content areas including,
Enrollment and Recruitment, Health, Intervention Support, Nutrition, Parent and Family Engagement
and In-Kind Services for both the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Rondalyn has also taken a
leadership role in the Head Start Fatherhood program and has been an integral part in the success and
recruitment of children and families for the Adult Education and Healthy Marriage Programs.
Caitlin Solis - AVANCE
As Grants Manager, Caitlin Solis has secured significant funding for AVANCE operations and programs,
including the organization’s first state home visiting state contracts and federal fatherhood funding.
She is currently managing a project with Social Finance US to explore pay-for-success feasibility. She
approaches her job with the philosophy of “dále shine” and brings a lifelong passion for working with
children and families.
Prior to joining AVANCE, Kate was a Research Associate at the Office of Early Childhood Research
at the University of Texas at San Antonio. There her projects included Healthy & Ready to Learn, an
obesity and diabetes prevention program for preschoolers, and Family First Steps, which utilized a
two-generation approach for learning. Before that, she taught art at San Antonio Youth Centers, an
organization which emphasizes success beyond circumstances.
She holds a B.A. from Our Lady of the Lake University and an M.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
