Questions about Funerals
Part II
"At the death of a Christian, whose life of faith was begun in the waters of Baptism and strengthened at the Eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end, nor does it break the bonds forged in life. The Church
also ministers to the sorrowing and consoles them in the funeral rites with the comforting Word of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist."
(Order of Christian Funerals, no. 4)
This is the second of three articles about questions related to the celebration of funerals in the Catholic Church. Our Catholic faith
teaches us that burying the dead is a corporeal work of mercy, and it is spiritual work of mercy to pray for those who have died. Furthermore,
many of us know from personal experiences that the funeral, along with all of the events surrounding this event, can be a sad experience, but
these events also can bring about peace, healing, and even joy as we honor and pray for our loved ones who have died. In light of our Catholic
beliefs about the importance of providing this corporeal and spiritual work of mercy, I want to address many questions, so some of the confusion
that exists around this topic can be adequately addressed. I should add that some of the confusion exists because people have been told different
things by different priests and lay people. I do not know what all people have been told, so I am sure that I am not going to alleviate all questions that people may have about this subject. It is my hope that this series of three bulletin articles can be a good start in addressing questions
and concerns, and I would be more than happy to revisit this subject again in the future. As always, if you have particular questions, please do
not hesitate to let me know.
If you or your loved one ever wants to begin preparing any actions related to a funeral, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. We have resources available to you to help with this process.
Do you have to be registered in a particular Catholic Church in order to have their funeral services offered there?
A person do not need to be registered a in a parish to have their funeral offered at that parish. However, parish boundaries are to be
respected as much as possible, and furthermore, there just needs to be conversations about where the services are to held after a person goes to
the Lord.
What are the conditions for a Catholic not to receive a Catholic funeral?
According to Canon Law, the law of the Catholic Church, one or more of the following three reasons would justify a Catholic Church
from not providing a funeral to one of its Catholic members:
If the person who died is a notorious apostate, heretic, or schismatic;
A person who chose the cremation of his/her bodies for reasons contrary to Christian faith;
A manifest sinner who cannot be granted a funeral without public scandal of the faithful (CIC 1184, Art. 1)
As a person could probably imagine, the most difficult reason to assess by any priest or parish is the third reason. Furthermore, if a person is not
practicing their Catholic faith, this is not necessary a source of public scandal in the same way that it was several years ago. Therefore, the decision for a funeral is one that must be made on the side of mercy, but people must also realize the that wider Church must also be considered in
these decisions.
Can baptized Christians receive a Catholic funeral?
According to Church law, any baptized Christian maybe granted a Catholic funeral with or without a Mass if they receive permission
from the Bishop along with meeting two other criteria. The text of the Code of Canon Law reads as follows: “In the prudent judgment of the
local ordinary, ecclesiastical funerals can be granted to baptized persons who are enrolled in a non-Catholic Church or ecclesial community
unless their intention is evidently to the contrary and provided that their own minister is not available (CIC 1183, Art. 3).” Therefore, a Catholic
funeral for a non-Catholic Christian is possible, especially if this person is not affiliated with a local Church, but the wishes of the wider family
of the deceased must be taken into consideration.
Can non-baptized infants and adults receive a Catholic funeral?
According to Church law, a non-baptized baby, whose parents intended to baptized, maybe granted a Catholic funeral with or without a
Mass if permission is received from the Bishop.
According to Church law, a non-baptized adult maybe granted a Catholic funeral with or without a Mass if permission is received from
the Bishop. However, these situations are difficult because an adult who is not baptized has decided to remain outside of the Christian for the
entirety of their lives, so the question of why this person would want a Christian funeral at the end of his/her life would have to be addressed.

Mirtha Munoz. Remember there is a grand prize drawing
so get your name in the drawing by sending in your step

Week 8 is finished with 44 people reporting a total of

Congratulations.
THANK YOU!
Thank you for your patience last weekend! Every day God
calls us to fix our attention not about everyday things but,
about what cannot be seen (2 Corinthians 4, 16-18) and He
gently reminded us about just that when the A/c broke 2
hours before 4:30 Mass. Plans are underway to have a
very old and complex system up and running for Mass this
weekend. Dave Mattke - Business Manager
SISTER PARISH NEWS
Father Chris Johnson and the Sister Parish Committee have
formed a plan to further communicate with Christ the King
and Our lady of Victory parishes. The plan is four pronged
and covers the following topics:
1. Happenings on the reservation/Quad City news
2. Parish news
3. Prayer Requests
4. Culture
Each of these will be covered on a rotating basis throughout the year. The reports will appear in the bulletin once
a month. This exchange of information is an important
step in growing the Christ the King/Our lady of Victory
relationship.
