2013 CHICAGO-MACKINAC RESULTS CHANGED –
RECHECK YOUR RESULTS

While writing about Pororoca’s 2013 ChicagoMackinac Race experience on the ChicagoNow
Blog, trying to reach out to non-sailors, I wanted
to give the exact elapsed time we were on the
race course. I visited the Chicago-Mackinac Race
results page and it reported that our elapsed
time was 45:12:24. Alarm bells started going off in my
head; that time wasn’t right! I re-ran the race using the
YellowBrick tracker, I called our navigator, Walt Wesley,
and asked him what time we finished, added in my mental math after the finish,
and we all agreed that Pororoca sailed the race in 46:12:24. Uh-oh. This didn’t
sound good. The website displays all times listed as CDT. I looked at our Finish
Time; it was correct at 11:42:24 CDT Monday. So, the elapsed time was off one
hour, the corrected time needed recalculating, but the finish time was correct.
Curious, isn’t it? Who knows what this meant to the boat's finish place?
Not knowing if this was going to kill Pororoca's first place
finish in Section 1, I contacted Chicago Yacht Club and
explained what I was seeing. I’m one of those who likes
Paul Elvstrom’s quote, “You haven’t won the race, if in
winning the race you have lost the respect of your
competitors.” I just want everyone to have a fair shake.
After a lot of research, re-running results, confirming start times and finish times,
Chicago Yacht Club found that 18 boats (out of 28) in the first test in Section 1,
Turbo, and Multihull Classes were shorted exactly one hour in their elapsed time,
from which corrected time and positions are calculated. Ten boat's results were
calculated correctly. All boat's Finish Times in the entire fleet were accurate.
What a conundrum. Digging further, there were changes in three other Sections
as well, which of course didn’t make the elapsed time accurate, and hence finish
places were at stake. Between Elapsed Times, Corrected Times and Finish Places,
it ended up 45 boats needed changes made in the Section results (which probably
meant even more affected in the overall results).
When I was 13 years old as PRO for the Jackson Park Star Fleet for my second year in
a row, I was put ashore when the Star Class Great Lakes Championship came to the
club. They brought in the “A- Team” to run the races. Lo and behold in the 2nd race,
somehow, the A-Team mis-scored the finishes, not a little, but the entire fleet of 28
boats. The list of finishers was just out of whack. A hearing was held, each boat was
brought in to offer “who was ahead” and “who was behind” which helped clear most
of it up, but there were two boats who were adamant that others didn’t have it right.
Only if they had left the 13 year old kid in charge, that wouldn’t have happened!

So to be diligent, Chicago Yacht Club took my information, and went to the Race Committee who performs the
scoring, to have them review their finish time sheets, starting times, and do a complete review. The deeper they
dug, the more anomalies that showed up. Suffice it to say, the errors incurred have been corrected and procedures
put in place not to have a repeat in the future. Chicago Yacht Club is terribly sorry this occurred.
Years ago, I scored a championship using Microsoft Excel. Just before trophies were to be awarded, someone informed
me that I had not included two boats that had entered. GULP. We had to postpone the awards ceremony until everything
was rescored. Nobody plans on these things happening; nobody wants these things to happen. It is best to just plow
forward, correct the results, inform everyone involved, and let the victors get the recognition they deserve for what they
really accomplished. Note - I still feel horrible for Stan Bailey who drove through a ferocious sleet filled snowstorm, and
had to tell him to hold off. I apologize again, Stan!
Fortunately, all boats in Section 1 in the 2013 Chicago-Mackinac Race needed one hour added to their elapsed time
and this did not change the section order of finish. It did drop Pororoca's overall position from 27th to 33rd. I did
shoot my own troops after all. This is the finish we earned, that is what we deserve. The J/111
Section needed 20 minutes subtracted from every boat's elapsed time. The Multihull Section
also had no change in finish positions within their section, even though the top two boats had
one hour added to their time. They were so far ahead it didn’t change their finish places.
Section Two saw Pinball Wizard drop from 7th to 8th and Tsunami moved from 8th to 7th. First
overall in the Cruising Division had one hour added to their elapsed time but finished so far
ahead of everyone else it did not change their position.
Good or bad, there were changes in the Turbo Section. Windquest remained first, Equation
moved from 3rd to 2nd, il mostro moved from 4th to 3rd, and sadly for my Star boating friends
in Racine on Denali, the Nelson/Marek 68, they dropped from 2nd to 4th. Sorry about that,
guys. The scoring correction process did not change any 1st-3rd places in the overall results,
but it did move boats up and down in the overall results otherwise.
As it turns out, the only crew that didn’t get up on the podium at the Awards Ceremony/ Sailor's Celebration that
should have was that from il mostro. Congratulations to Peter Thornton, Chris Thornton, Gary Murino, Roc Roney,
Deane Tank, Jack Jennings, Matt Cassidy, Greg Fordon, Chris Higgins, Willie Lynch, Justin Palm, Ken Read, Brett
Reed, Justin Slattery, John Stanley, Paul Stroup, and Jonathan Swain for your third place finish in the Turbo Class.
I figure that 45 boats had either their elapsed and corrected times or finish place changed, which is about 17% of
the fleet that finished, and 30% of the Sections in the race had changes. With an average of 7 sailors per boat, that
represents 630 eyes that likely looked at the race's results. Vigilance is required in this sport to review you and
your competitor's results, as you know there is a process established in the sport for boats to call these matters
before race officials to get them corrected. We sailors have to be conscious of this every time we sail and look over
the results.
For the hundreds of volunteers who work on getting this race run each year, and the countless meetings they have,
from sponsorship, logistics, parties, communications, race committee at both ends of the race (boats, tents, race
trailer, housing, etc.), protest committee, etc., they did their jobs flawlessly again and it was another phenomenal
event. Most boat's score changes didn’t amount to a significant change in the big picture, as for only 2 boats in
Section results is the scoring change having an unfortunate impact. We should be pleased and not upset with the
2013 Mackinac experience.
Obviously this is not the first race to have a scoring problem and it is not going to be the last. Scoring anomalies
have been a part of the sport for a long time and will remain a prospect in racing in the future. Thank you for all

2014 LAKE MICHIGAN SAILING HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS OPEN

Established in 2008, the Lake Michigan Sailing Hall of Fame provides a permanent place of recognition of
outstanding sailors in LMSRF history. Inductees can be viewed on the LMSRF website. The Lake Michigan Sailing
Hall of Fame invites anyone on Lake Michigan and its tributaries to make nominations for the 2014 class through
their club's Commodore.
All yacht club Commodores were recently mailed a nomination packet with a form which may be completed and
submitted. Nominees should meet the following characteristics:
1. Contributor to the sport of sailing.
2. Displayed good sportsmanship.
3. Free of controversy.
4. Free from rating discrepancies.
5. Have respect of his or her peers.
Your club may nominate as many individuals as it wishes. Nominees, if not elected their first year of nomination,
remain on the ballot in subsequent years.
The deadline for nominations is December 31st. Announcement of electees is made March 15th. An induction
ceremony is then scheduled at the nominating yacht club when convenient. The induction ceremonies bring
together many past and present friends to enjoy the event. The electee is given a plaque showing the lake and his
or her location. The LMSRF website displays the electee's photo and the recognition citation.

This is a one-day, one-race event supporting the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin held in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 27 and 28, 2013. Why enter this regatta? It includes
everything that is Fun! While the words “Louie’s Last” has a somber tone to it, Louie
Eishold, great uncle of the Milwaukee Ale House founder, met his demise in a bar fight in
1886 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
The Sailing Instructions previously offered that if the weather was inclement, the organizers would hold a foot race
along the river near the Milwaukee Ale House instead. Lo and behold, one year the weather did not cooperate. The
organizers lined the sailors up on the street, had the foot race, and one baracho sailor ran into a parked car, ended
up needing medical attention, and drew the attention of the cops (a permit had not been filed for a foot race on the
city streets!). Way too funny, but like all good drunk stories, it brought on the end of this alternate race.
Everything from Scows, Inshore One-Designs, Oddball one-offs, to Offshore boats are welcome to enter. Bring
whatever you got (a Hobie Cat has already entered).
If your boat does not have a PHRF rating, one will be assigned to you and “there will be no whining about
assigned ratings.”

Race around a "beer can shaped course."
Boat crews are encouraged to “dress up” or “dress down” as it may be. According to the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel (http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/32480779.html):
“The International Sailing Federation has devised hundreds of pages of carefully calibrated rules for racing, few of
which apply to the colorful shenanigans that took place Saturday on the high seas of Louie’s 10th Last Regatta.
Competitors mooned each other, danced about in German beer wench costumes and generally cavorted in a
fashion wholly lacking the requisite respect for a dignified pursuit and the largest regatta in Milwaukee. Clearly,
the pre-race nourishment of bagels, beer and Bloody Mary's contributed to the midrace debauchery on Lake
Michigan and the post-race revelry on the riverside docks of the Milwaukee Ale House.” Are you starting to feel the
laughter now?
You may bribe the race committee for a better finish position – funds donated to the Children’s Hospital.
Everyone needs some skin in this game. Crews are encouraged to donate at least $20 apiece, the boat must set
up a donation page to be forwarded to every owner's and crew’s entire email list, put on Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, or anywhere else to show your charitable side and get your friends, family and co-workers to contribute.
In 14 years, their growth is admirable becoming one of the “mecca” events for sailors, having started with 12
boats in the beginning and grown to 123 boats in 2012.
Sailing Magazine listed Louie's a one of the Top Ten Best Sailing Events in the Country.

Sunday, September 29, 2013 - M.A.S.S. (Morning After Sail of Shame): a race back to Waukegan for Chicago area
boats.
Louie's Last Cup - The dented and scuffed cup is the Louie's Last Cup. This trophy is awarded to the first
place boat in the actual race. Legend has it that this may have been the drinking vessel that was bashed
over Uncle Louie's head back in 1886 ultimately leading to his demise. The truth is that the cup was
repeatedly bashed into a parking meter out in front of the trophy store the day it was purchased. They
wanted a distressed look to it ...
The Flounder - The large fish is called The Flounder (commissioned in 2005). It is awarded to
the boat with the longest elapsed time around the marks (last stinking place). The winner of
the Flounder epitomizes the good natured attitude of the event.
The Cutlass - In 2007 a new trophy was added to the lineup of polished cups and plaques. Inspired by
those fun loving keg standing bears from Louie's 8th and donated by Captain Tom (Bucket-OMargaritas) Young. This highly prized trophy will be awarded to the most uniquely attired crew,
a.k.a. the best costumed crew of the regatta. Judging will be held on the evening of the regatta party,
by the regatta committee.
Green Brag Flag - The Green Brag Flag is awarded to the top three money raising boats for
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
Division Brag Flags - This flag is awarded to each participating boat in Louie's Last Regatta, because
each "Boat is its own division."

Maggie Bersch Memorial Trophy – For the boat that raises the most money. And they get a quarter barrel of
Louie’s Demise Ale as well as a special green flag for the Top 3.
The Debbia Grassroots Trophy – For the boat that raises the most from the most individual donors over $15. And
they get a case of Milwaukee Brewing Company beer of choice as well as a special green flag for the Top 3.
If all of this hasn't convinced you yet that you should be sailing in Louie's Last Regatta, then maybe this last
sentence will: YOU SHOULD BE SAILING IN LOUIE'S LAST REGATTA!
2013 ADVENTURESAILR AT RACINE YACHT CLUB

On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, AdventureSailR 2013 was offered to girls age 7-17, by the Racine Yacht Club in
cooperation with Girls Inc. and the National Women's Sailing Foundation.
Strong, cold, Northeast winds blew plans a bit off course; however, the 14th annual, FREE, one day sailing program
for 82 girls was a big success! Many thanks to the volunteers who taught the girls about the parts of a sailboat,
points of sail, navigation, knot tying, and the Racine landmarks-Wind Point Lighthouse and the Racine Reef Light.
Stephan Kurdas, from the Racine Health Department, talked about North Beach being certified as a Blue Wave
Beach. He gave the girls tips on how they can help keep the beach clean. More information can be found at
www.wibeaches.us.
The Racine Sheriff, Mrs. Knight, offered rides aboard the water patrol boat and let the girls drive the boat in the
harbor.
Miss Bell City Teen, Mara Mandli, spoke to the girls about the importance of volunteering and giving back to your
community. She also commended the girls for attending the AdventureSailR 2013 program, and encouraged them
to try new and different experiences.

A separate event, "Sisters Under Sail," was held in Kenosha on Sunday, August 4, 2013, brought together by
Kenosha Yacht Club, national Women's Sailing Foundation, Girls Inc., and Sisters Under Sail. The 110-foot

TRADITION – WHAT A MISLEADING LIE!

I have been to tons of sailing meetings. More often than not, someone will suggest a change –
Egad! We can’t do that. We have always done it the way we’re doing it now. We can’t make any
change. This sport is about tradition. What about the deed of gift? So and so will quit sailing if
that change is made. And the excuses, roadblocks, hurdles come forward, and complete
shutdown of expression is accomplished. Tradition continues down its failed course.
This sport is teetering quickly towards becoming the buggy whip, mimeograph machine, punch
cards, 8” floppy disk because it is so entrenched in Tradition. It is stuck in a rut, unwilling to
change, unwilling to try new things. So let’s really look at Tradition and see how it is a fable in
this sport.
100 years ago, when a club held a regatta, it was an invitational. Today, invitational regattas are illegal. Strike 1.
100 years ago, when a club held a regatta, the entry fee was $0. Each boat was a guest at a club. No different than
me inviting you over for dinner, I sure don’t expect or plan on charging you. Today, entry fees are the norm, some
attempt break-even, others use entry fees as a profit center. Strike 2.
100 years ago, give away trophies commonly were sterling silver, and not some little 4” dish, but a big huge
trophies. Today’s trophies? Never mind. Strike 3.
100 years ago, all boats were wooden. Today, it is rare to find a wooden boat on the course. Strike 4.
100 years ago, boats had gaff rigs. Today, they’re coming back, but are called fathead mainsails instead! Ball 1.
100 years ago, it was the Chicago to Harbor Springs Race. Today, it is the Chicago Mackinac Race. Strike 5.
100 years ago, we didn’t have winches. Today, they are powerful and easy to use. Strike 6.
100 years ago, there weren’t any electronics. Today, boats are loaded with them. Strike 7.
And on and on it goes. The sport does evolve, but at such a snail’s pace it is hard to
recognize the changes. But change it does, and in dramatic fashion when looking at it
over the long run.
What’s the point of showing how things are NOT the same and there really isn’t any
Tradition in this sport? It is to kill the despicable growth killing process that we have to
keep doing what we have been doing for the past 30 years that is causing the decline in
the sport. We need to change, we need innovation, and we need to start aggressively
pursuing fresh new ideas that will bring sailors along with their kids out to the starting
lines.
Lead, follow, or simply get Tradition the hell out of the way!
WINNING THE 2013 CHICAGO-MACKINAC IN SECTION 1, ONBOARD
POROROCA FOR GENE McCARTHY’S 60TH MACKINAC RACE

Pororoca was better prepared than any prior Mackinac Race. Everything was shipshape and put in its place. Some
people appreciated reading our race strategy last year, and we’ll share what we did this year.
Two months ago in this newsletter I wrote that the Lake surface temperatures were cold and
to be careful of hypothermia. That was actually a hint that set out our initial race strategy.
With cold water and warm land temperatures, thermals should provide stronger winds along
the shore and less wind out to sea. We took the Illinois and Wisconsin coastal route, actually
going west of the west end of Racine Reef, within a half mile of shore. As the sun was setting,
we could see that this strategy was working and holding us tight with our fellow dogs.
However, real breeze had set in across the Lake, so we took the lift towards the Manitou
Islands and headed out across the Lake shortly after clearing Wind Point.

We continued to hang with our fellow dogs, however the fleet started
elongating from first to last position (the rich got richer, and we got poorer,
being the slowest physically of all of the sleds). We all were together as a
pack, seemingly all having the same strategy at this point, heading across
the Lake. Off Point Betsie, Stripes read their GRIB files and saw a lot of wind
out in the Lake and took a tack heading Northwest. They took this way out
into the Lake, tacking again not far from Washington Island by Green Bay.
On Pororoca, the YellowBrick tracking was telling us we were in 5th place of
the six Great Lakes 70s. Our course, to keep speed up in the light air, had us
headed towards the West side of the Manitou Islands. A gamble felt right, as

momentarily. Can I phone a friend? Can we ask the audience? Can I do a
Mobile Shout Out? We sure were questioning our latest strategy. Little did we know, but it was worse in the
Manitou Passage, and by the time we sailed back into the passage, just clearing the reef off the South tip of South
Fox Island, we had passed one sled and pulled up alongside of a couple of our other dogs. Back in it again!
Stripes out to sea sailed in really solid breeze and did not slow down. They went outside all of the Islands,
including Beaver. This move really had them out in the lead, though under handicap, YellowBrick was showing us
in first. As the section went down the Straits of Mackinac, the entire fleet compressed (the poor got richer and the
rich got poorer). Thirsty Tiger, who had fallen way back, was now in sight. Stripes, out in front, had slowed down
and we heard their radio call under the bridge, not too far ahead any longer.
Last year, I explained to fellow sled sailors that in the 36 years that these sleds have been on the Lakes, there have
been only two days where they have been able to really shine and stretch their legs. Back in 1987 when Dick
Jennings broke the Chicago-Mackinac race record that had been held for decades, and then in 2000 when the sleds

did the non-stop race from Port Huron to Chicago, meeting up with a strong cold front when turning at Gray's Reef
to head down the Lake making it in some 18-20 hours to Chicago. These were the two times these boats were able
to bring their spinnaker poles back off the headstay and go downwind, with great speed in the 20’s. All the rest of
the time the sleds have raced with their spinnaker poles on their headstays, making apparent wind higher, and
tacking extensively downwind. Some sled guys last year told me I was depressing them when I pointed this out. I
commented that you just need a whole lotta patience to wait for the right day. It comes about once every 15 years.

With the wind predictions of this year’s Mac, I explained to our crew before the start that when the spinnaker was
up, the pole would be on the headstay the entire time, with a lot of downwind tacking, and there would not be any
time that we would be running downwind with the pole back.
So, the other shift took over just west of the bridge. What did they do? They pulled the pole back and started going
downwind, just killing boat speed. After 15 minutes of this, YellowBrick said we were no longer in first. I do have a
temper and I lost it. I reminded them that the pole is to be on the
headstay the entire race and to heat the boat up. A minute later we were
going fast again, though not pointing directly at the finish line any
longer. We did three jibes after the bridge to get across the finish line,
which allowed us to close up the time gap between us and first place
(Stripes) and put us back into first with a corrected time difference of
00:07:43 for the win.
So for Clean Gene’s 60th Chicago-Mac we were able to deliver him a win.
His birthday was July 25, making this a pretty nice 85th birthday present!
BARTHEL TROPHY AWARDED TO TRI-LAKES CHALLENGE CHAMPION

Now that the last of the boats of the prestigious Trans-Superior Race have crossed the finish line, the coveted
Barthel Trophy can be awarded. The Barthel Trophy, one of many
governed by the Yacht Racing Union of the Great Lakes, is awarded to
the best finisher of all three of the Great Lakes featured long distance
races. The three races comprise the Bayview-Mackinac, ChicagoMackinac and the ever tough Trans-Superior races. That’s over
1,000 miles of racing in three separate races on three different Great
Lakes in just over 16 days.
All three races make up what the Yacht Racing Union proudly calls
the Tri-Lakes Challenge. The challenge was established in 2001 after
the Yacht Racing Union of the Great Lakes dusted off the beautiful
Barthel Trophy and repositioned it as the award for winning the TriLakes Challenge.
Since the Trans-Superior is only sailed every two years on odd
calendar years, it is to be awarded this year to the best finisher to
have completed all three races. Out of all the hundreds of boats that competed in these three races, only four boats
raced all three. They included Stripes skippered by Bill Martin, having won several times before, il mostro,
skippered by Peter Thornton, and Screaming O, skippered and Steve Schick and Eric Thomas. The fourth boat,
Vortices, skippered by Chris Saxton, came out the overall winner. YRUGL and all of the sailors of the Great Lakes
congratulate Saxton on this great feat.

HONORING YOUR CLUB’S BEST

Hopefully your club members head away from the club to compete in major events and championships. When they
succeed and bring home a World, National, District, or major event win, how well does your club recognize your
member’s effort?
Years ago, a club had a member win a World’s Championship and brought the World’s trophy
home with them. The club tacked recognition for this huge accomplishment onto a regular club
party. That just didn’t have the right feel for such a major accomplishment. I would have set up
a special recognition event for the winner, and with today’s videos, pictures and everything else
the internet provides, assembled a decent media display for the recognition event. Do you
honor your club member’s major wins?

LMSRF TREASURER PROFILE - MICHAEL HETTEL

Michael Hettel is a member of the Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe Club and lives in Peoria, Illinois. He recently
retired from Caterpillar in Peoria, as one of 19 Operating Directors under the 5 Vice Presidents. He and his wife,
Jean, have three sons: Ross (25), Eric (17), and Nick (15). Born in Ottawa, Illinois, Hettel learned to sail in the early
'90s while living in Singapore. He took sailing classes at a local charter fleet that was Australian Yachting
Federation accredited and then chartered two weekends a month for family trips to the Indonesian Riau
Islands and points south, Malaysian islands, as well as around Singapore. Sailing has taken him to Indonesia,
Thailand, Lake Huron and an assortment of Star Class Great Lakes venues.
Hettel has sailed on beach catamarans (Hobie 16 & NACRA), dinghies (Lasers), and keel boats. Along the way he
has owned a Hutchins 23, Star, Laser, RS Feva, J/105 and a Newport 41 MKII. The funniest thing he ever saw was
his first time as bow on a one design X-Yacht 9.9 meter at Changi Sailing Club in Singapore, where he assumed the
spinnaker was packed correctly, but it wasn't. The spinnaker was launched 'sideways' and the Kiwi owner and
Kiwi/Aussie crew did not see any humor in the effort ... Soon after he switched to an American owned 9.9m.
The most exciting sailing he has had was offwind in a Queen's Cup race, sailing double-handed at 10-12 knots boat
speed on the J/105. The most terrifying experiences were two knockdowns on Surface Tension when 2-3 miles
astern of the ill-fated Wingnuts in the Derecho line squall of the 2011 Chicago-Mackinac race. His proudest race
was the 2010 Queen's Cup double-handed race, as it was his first double.
Being passionate about sailing, he has given back to the sport by volunteering as the Aquatics (sailing) Board Chair
at the Illinois Valley Yacht and Canoe Club in Peoria and has been a Star Class regatta organizer. With LMSRF he
would like to create opportunities for sailors and clubs to expand the sailing and racing sport, as well as fostering
to get more people on the water and boats on the starting line.
One message he would like to share – “To the LMSRF members and readership of LMSRF newsletter: Please
actively engage in supporting the sport you enjoy by exposing more people to it in whatever way(s) you can!

CLUB FEATURE: SAIL ANY WAY

SailAnyWay is based in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, in Door County on Green Bay.
SailAnyWay is a highly focused non-profit organization whose mission is to
convert non-sailors into competitive racing sailors. They solely serve people
with disabilities that prevent them from safely boarding or operating a single-handed sailboat. They sail out of Egg
Harbor Marina and Windjammers Sailing Club. These sites were selected due to suitability for the boats being
sailed and inherent safety concerns.

Recognizing that their season is short, they have developed an accelerated program to introduce, develop and
polish the skills of their participants effectively. SailAnyWay is fully equipped with accessible "Access Liberty"
sailboats, appropriate lifts to aid boarding, and a power fleet for coaching, safety and towing. Access Liberty
sailboats are 320 pound 12 foot dinghies; 160 pounds is in the keel for stability and they have two rudders for

control even at extreme heel. They carry 79 sq. ft. of sail with a furling main, self tacking jib, draw 3'6" with
daggerboard down, and have capacity for a sailor up to 265 pounds. There are two seat options adaptable to the
sailor's needs. The Access Liberty may be steered by manual or joystick steering. There are fleets all over the
world.
The program starts with Companion Sailing to try sailing, including a featured test sail, before committing and
moving on to Land Drills. In the Land Drills phase, there are classroom, online, remote control and sailing
simulator experiences, modeled on US Sailing instruction programs. Upon successful completion of Land Drills,
sailors enter the Sailing Solo curriculum. Sailing Solo sailors will have passed a DNR Safe Boater Class, Land Drills
certification, and been recommended by a SailAnyWay instructor. The next stage is Sailboat Racing and sailors are
eligible to enter the program upon further SailAnyWay Coach recommendation. A fifth stage, Group Keelboat
Sailing, is in development. Fees are implemented at the Sailing Solo phase and scholarships are available for those
in need. SailAnyWay's web site utilizes video vignettes to educate and excite the future sailor about their facilities

SailAnyWay conducts racing amongst its members on a routine basis. They also take SailAnyWay participants to
the Mobility Cup Regatta every year, an international regatta for sailors with disabilities, in Ontario, Canada.
SailAnyWay offers opportunities to sailors, coaches, potential sponsors, volunteers and donors as this segment of
the sailing community continues to develop and invites participation and support.
TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE GREAT LAKES
Millions of visitors throughout the Great Lakes have toured the tall ships this summer as part of the TALL SHIPS
CHALLENGE® series of races and public maritime festivals, which are celebrating the bicentennial of the War of
1812. With help from local port organizers, the non-profit organization Tall Ships America has been coordinating
visits from a fleet of world-class tall ships to 22 U.S. and Ontario communities. At every port, maritime enthusiasts
young and old have responded to the call of adventure and joined a tall ship to sail as volunteer crew and gain the
“experience of a lifetime.”

“When the ship is underway, you feel like you’re king of the sea,” said 16-year-old Anna Spring of Newport, Rhode
Island, who participated as a student in the Class Afloat program earlier this season onboard Norway’s 210-foot

Sørlandet, the world’s oldest full-rigged tall ship still operating. “When the opportunity to sail on Sørlandet opened
up for me, I jumped at the chance. When I first stepped on board it was kind of crazy, because I didn’t know where
any of the lines were, but eventually I was able to learn a lot more about crew work, and the sailing maneuvers
became less of a mystery. Like in any community as close as one on a ship, you learn trust, communication,
generosity, and teamwork.”
On August 12th, Sørlandet, along with three other participating tall ships, kicked off the series’ fifth and final
offshore race on Lake Michigan and joined the rest of the fleet at one of the two maritime festivals, the Baylake
Bank Tall Ship Festival in Green Bay, Wisconsin and TALL SHIPS® 1812 Georgian Bay in Collingwood, Ontario,
August 16-18. Next up is TALL SHIPS® 1812 Georgian Bay in Penetanguishene, Ontario, August 24-25, followed by
the Southwestern Ontario Sails to See taking place in the ports of Windsor, Amherstburg, Kingsville and Pelee
Island, August 30-September 2.
“Class Afloat not only provides its students with a full academic program but also with a very serious sail training
program,” said Bonnie Rowan, the program’s shipboard director. “The festivals have been going very well for us.
We had thousands of visitors touring the ship and a lot of last minute interest from people who want to join this
summer’s program, which is open to all ages.”
Tall Ships America Executive Director Bert Rogers added, “Our organization’s main objective is to enrich youth
education through character building and leadership programs aboard tall ships. Our goal is to get as many
students as possible out sailing in these ships, so they can face the challenges and reap the rewards of adventure
and education under sail.”
SAIL CHICAGO MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR MOVING ON
Sail Chicago's long serving Membership Director, Lois Lawson, has stepped down after many
years of service. The club's membership is sound, at about 200 members.

CHICAGO YACHT CLUB MANAGER RETIRES
Jim Clark concluded his tenure as General Manager of the Chicago Yacht Club July 31, a sunset on his career as a full
time club manager and the start of a great adventure of retired life with his first mate Barbara. They will be leaving
Chicago by the end of August, and will be making their way to their home in Naples, Florida. He made a huge
number of great regattas and events happen over the years. He is thankful to have been blessed with a wonderful
staff and engaged members.
Dwight Jenson has been engaged as the new General Manager and has been on station through this summer's
sailing season. Welcome aboard.

I have recently completed my Level 1 Instructor Course at Pewaukee, Wisconsin, and enjoyed my experience
very much. My instructor, Steve Gay, did a wonderful job of teaching myself and all the other Instructor Candidates
how to efficiently teach a class of young students. As well as learning how to teach and be in control of a class, I
learned a lot about how sailing works and picked up on some useful sailing techniques. I also had the opportunity
to become more comfortable in 420s because I had never been in one before the Level 1 course. Overall, I thought
it was a terrific experience and it will help me become an apt instructor and run a fun and safe sailing class.-William Gheorghita, Ephraim Yacht Club

From the Level 1 Instructor Class I learned how to be a better sailing instructor. Before the class, I only vaguely
knew how to teach, and thanks to the class, I know I am a better teacher. Some of the things I learned throughout
the class were land drills that help students grasp the concepts that are being taught, and also many on the water
sailing games that can turn a slow and boring day around into a memorable lesson. I also learned how to deal with
students who may be difficult to handle, and how to perform well in many different teaching environments.
Overall, I am glad that I took the course, because it helps me every day in that classes that I teach. Thank you very

I attended my Level One Instructor Training course in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was an incredible experience. It
allowed me to meet other skilled sailors with a passion for the sport that I love so much. My trainer was a past
Olympian and he was an excellent teacher that passed on lots of knowledge. My training course was on June 17
and I passed the course. I am very proud to now be an employed sailing instructor representing my home club as

Sailing Club
Competing in the 2013 U.S. Youth Championship was an amazing experience. Corpus Christi provided a wide
range of conditions, which produced challenging racing. In Corpus Christi, the sea breeze turns on everyday at
approximately 12:00, and blows pretty hard, and from a consistent direction. We saw 20+ knots of wind for 3 of 4
days of racing. This big breeze (which produced some large waves) allowed me to further refine my form while on
the trapeze as crew on a 420. Quick and well executed wire-to-wire tacks were essential to keeping the boat
moving fast and powered up to push through the waves. In addition to this, the course was a modified trapezoid,
which in the big breeze provided a white knuckle ride on the reach legs with the spinnaker up. This is where my
form on the trapeze was greatly improved. I was able to remain in position on the wire as the boat skipped and
lurched as it rapidly accelerated/de-accelerated through waves. I was able to improve so much that I was able to
maneuver and enable the boat to plane from the wire with my body-weight. I had a lot of fun, and enjoyed the

At the beginning of the summer, two of my co-workers and I drove to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take a Level 1
Instructor Certification Course. Before the course began, I was very skeptical and questioning the necessity of
taking it. When we began and our Instructor Trainer introduced himself, I became more comfortable with the idea
of spending four days with the other people in the classroom. As the class went on, I had a tougher and tougher
time with our Instructor. It was challenging to come back day after day, but as we took our tests and showed off
our sailing and teaching skills, the class became more fun. In the end, it was a very satisfying feeling to have
completed my Level 1 Certification and be able to teach students to sail in my own words. I hope to inspire more
people to become Instructors and that they help other students become better sailors as well. Thank you.--Annie

2014 Queen’s Cup Race Going to Muskegon

The 2014 76th Queen’s Cup Race is going to Muskegon, Michigan. As the finishing
touches are being put to bed for the 2013 75th Queen’s Cup Race, which was a very
successful event, we are looking forward to the 2014 race. The race will be on Friday,
June 27, 2014, so mark your calendars. The Muskegon Yacht Club will welcome racers,
which will start in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at South Shore Yacht Club and finish off the
shore of Muskegon, Michigan. The 2014 race will be the shortest of the current three
destinations, with an approximate distance and bearing of 67nm at 079 degrees True.
The South Haven race was 76nm at 117 degrees and the Ludington race was 82nm at 047
degrees. Early finish times are to be expected, depending on the breeze. The planning
stages are underway on both sides of the lake and the Muskegon Yacht Club will be
welcoming the finishers with open arms.

Sailed off to a Last Sunset
Max A. Finton, M.D., 96, of Northport passed away peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2013 at Northport Highlands,
Michigan. Born on February 24, 1917 in Jackson, Michigan to the late Walter and Ella (Hobart) Finton. He married
Mary Mitchell Perkins on June 14, 1941 in Ann Arbor. They had one son, Doug. Max truly loved
the water. He was an accomplished sailor, loved boating on the Great Lakes and the oceans, and
was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron. He was the first Commodore and the namesake of
the Finton Cup trophy at Northport Bay Yacht Club. Max attended The University of Michigan
Medical School. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the
South Pacific. Following his discharge, he completed his medical training, graduating from The
University of Michigan School of Ophthalmology. He served as Chief of Staff at Bronson Hospital
in Kalamazoo. Max served on the Academy of Ophthalmology Board and was a board member of the Leelanau
Memorial Hospital for 18 years. Surviving Max is his son, Douglas (Sharon) Finton, grandson, Matthew Finton,
great-granddaughter, Miranda Finton, and seven nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by his parents,
brothers Walter and Robert, and his wife. A memorial gathering will take place in Northport at a later time.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leelanau Conservancy.
Neil Charles "Chuck" Branson, 80, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, died July 12, 2013, in DePere, Wisconsin. He was born
April 16, 1933 in DePere to the late Neil Coster and Grace Dean (Warren) Branson. Chuck graduated from
Northwestern Military and Naval Academy and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He served in the U.S. Coast
Guard as a Lightship sailor during the Korean Conflict, 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
On June 15, 1957, he married the former Beverly Ann Hart in Green Bay, then moving to Milwaukee.
After working in sales for numerous companies, he founded N.C. Branson & Associates, Inc. in 1977.
Chuck earned his pilot's license at the age of 16. Chuck was a longtime member of the U.S. Coast
Guard Lightship Sailors Association and Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. He was also a member of the
Experimental Aviation Association, F. & A.M. Des Peres Lodge 0085, Beja Shriners of Green Bay, the Peninsula
Shrine Club, the Wisconsin Scottish Rite Valley, and Tripoli Masonic Lodge of Milwaukee. Chuck enjoyed sailing,
motorcycle riding, snowmobiling and more. He is survived by his wife Beverly, his daughter and son-in-law, Anne
Alice Branson and James Robert Calto, Chicago, IL; two sisters-in-law, Ruthie (Branson) Vinette, MI and Marjorie
(Mueller) Branson, CA; his aunt, Lorraine (Nys) Warren, Sheboygan. Chuck was preceded in death by two brothers,
Edgar and William. A memorial service with military honors was held Saturday, July 20, 2013. A private burial
took place. In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund has been established in Chuck's name.

SAILING DIRECTOR POSITION CREATED AT LITTLE TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB

As a result of several very active Little Traverse Yacht Club (Harbor Springs, Michigan) racing sailors who took the
initiative to recruit and hire a Summer Sailing Director, a special opportunity was generously made available to
many club members for the first time.
The decision to do this was based on a desire to improve and increase the level and amount of adult and youth
sailing on Little Traverse Bay.
An ad was placed in Sail One Design as well as through the ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association). No
responses came from Sail One Design, but a response came quickly via ICSA from a top college assistant coach who
was hired after phone interviews with a variety of members and reference checks.
The result was a resounding success!
He led fleet workshops, conducted on-the-water training with individuals, Race Committee training, shared
experience and expertise for best practices, gave several weekly seminars, as well as lending Regatta support. He
will begin an advanced Laser Race Team program with the youth program, Little Traverse Sailors, next year, which
will include some travel as well as big boat experience.
His assessment of his ten weeks here was “It was a great time due to the diversity of people and boats – everything
from 8’ BUGs to a bright and shiny new Carkeek HPR (high performance rule) 40!”
RED BULL YOUTH AMERICA’S CUP

To develop interest in the youth in the United States and the world in the sport of sailing, one effort has ten Youth
Teams from around the world: Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden,
Switzerland, USA and USA and they are competing in fleet races on San Francisco Bay in America's Cup 45s. These
AC45’s are the ones the adult teams competed in events around the world over the past few years attempting to
build up interest in the America’s Cup. Some of the public and some AC insiders wished that this America’s Cup

AMERICA’S CUP – WATCH IT!

I haven’t been a fan of the America’s Cup in the past. There is no special reason why, it just didn’t capture my
imagination. But with Tom Ehman having brought the America’s Cup trophy to Chicago and describing all of their
efforts to make this cup TV interesting, I did develop a bit of curiosity.
A number of sailors have commented that this America’s Cup doesn’t resemble sailing. I think they’re right and I
think the AC has it right too. We all drive sedans, SUV’s and minivans in our daily lives. None of us drive F1 or
Open Wheel Indy cars. The comparison between our street vehicles and these high end race cars are so completely
different, you might say that they don’t resemble the regular every day car.
The AC72’s are truly unbelievable. The horsepower developed by the wing sail, the ability to foil (and we’re now
seeing some beginning to foil upwind, not only downwind) and reduce drag to the utmost minimum is amazing.
They blast along at 35+ knots of boat speed in 16-18 mph of wind. Yup, these boats don’t resemble any sailboat
I’ve ever been on. I think the America's Cup boats should be different, they should be the equivalent of F1 or Open
Wheel Indy cars.
Some lament that the 12-Meters had an afterlife and could be bought and used by regular sailors and these AC72’s
have no afterlife. Neither do F1 or Indy cars! Those cars aren’t cheap to build either.
When the U.S. decided to enter into the space program, we spent years developing rockets. You’ve seen the videos
with many exploding on the launch pad or going up in the air a few thousand feet before they were detonated.
There is so much to learn by trial and error when doing something that has never been done before. NASA had
assembled many of the most brilliant minds in the world, and they couldn’t get it right on their early attempts. And
even decades later we lost two Space Shuttles and are still learning.
These AC72’s aren’t any different than taking that huge leap heading out into space. There is nothing around like
them. Everything they are doing is by trial and error. And, we are seeing failures relatively often. Will they work
out all of the kinks in this America’s Cup? Probably not. Watching the Louis Vuitton Finals, it has given me the
yearning to go to the Demolition Derby at the County Fair!
While Artemis had the boat failure and loss of life in practice, their second boat was assembled and had little time
to practice before racing began. They were eliminated after 4 races in the Louis Vuitton Semi-Finals. This left
Emirates Team New Zealand versus Luna Rossa in the Finals of the Challenger Series. Clearly ETNZ was simply
faster and sailing higher through the water and trounced Luna Rossa 7 to 1.
The grand finale is now between Oracle Team USA and Emirates Team New Zealand, I would recommend watching
at least some of it. Call your sailing and non-sailing friends over and explain this is your version of the Super Bowl
and make a party of it! Each Yacht Club should be hosting America's Cup Parties! Game-on!

2013 Kaczmarek Cup

The Kaczmarek Cup is sailed in memory of Chicago sailor Herbert J. Kaczmarek, who passed on at age 84 in 1999. Kaczmarek was a more than 50-year
member of the Great Lakes Cruising Club and the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club (he was Commodore in 1956). He was quite proud of being and never minded
being called an "Old Goat," as he was a member of the Island Goat Sailing Society, having raced in 29 Chicago-to-Mackinac races. He claimed a third-place finish
when he was 80 years old. Born and raised on Chicago's North Side, Kaczmarek raced on Lake Michigan, starting with small wooden boats as a teenager and
progressed to 20-foot sailboats before settling on the 35-foot Dixie. Kaczmarek was known for being a fixture at the harbors from spring through fall, working
on his boat or assisting anyone who needed a hand with theirs. He was one of the few boat captains who practiced spontaneous man-overboard drills.

2013 US Sunfish Class Midwest Region Championship II/John Sheppard, Jr., Memorial Regatta

Lake Michigan produced two of its best sailing days of the year on August 24th and 25th for Lake Bluff Yacht Club’s annual John Sheppard, Jr., Memorial
Regatta. This year the regatta also served as the second Sunfish Midwest Region Championship for 2013. Twenty sailors from four different states trekked
to Lake Bluff, Illinois for a fun weekend of sailing. Saturday produced warm weather with southeast breezes in the 6-10 knot range and light chop. This
allowed the race committee to get in a total of five races for the day. Three different sailors won a race on the first day so the scores were tight. Everyone was
tired after an active day but enjoyed a delicious dinner at the home of a Lake Bluff club member. Sunday morning dawned warm and breezy from the
southwest with wind around 14 knots and gusts almost 20 knots. The first race of the day favored the strongest in a two-lap windward-leeward. After that,
the winds moderated somewhat and the race committee got in another two races, resulting in a total of eight races for the regatta. Winner of the regatta was
Lake Bluff Yacht Club & LMSRF member Rich Chapman (9 points) followed closely by Scott Schappe (19 pts.) and Fritz Hanselman (21 pts.). The top female
competitor was Lake Bluff Yacht Club's Gretchen Seymour (40 pts.). As the highest finishing non-qualified racer, Scott Schappe secured a berth to the 2014

Sunfish World Championship. After Sunday’s racing, competitors enjoyed bratwurst and hot dogs on the beach before packing up and heading home. Much
thanks to the Lake Bluff Yacht Club members and race committee for a great weekend of sailing.—Doug Warren

With a frontal system on its way to the Michigan coast and all the forecast models in
agreement, the 26 racing teams from around the U.S. and the world knew before they left
the dock that the final day of the 2013 Audi Melges 20 U.S. National Championship
presented by Audi Muskegon would feature big waves and white knuckle speeds. Race
Officer Bruce Golison planned for three races to decide the championship, and the battle
began at 10 a.m. less than a mile from Holland's famous 'Big Red' lighthouse in 10 knots of
breeze. Race five of the championship, the first of the day, saw the all-amateur team
aboard Brian Hill's Atlas punch through the starting line, turning their advantage to a big
lead at the top mark. Hill and Argo's Jason Carroll fought tooth and nail for the position
down the first run, with Carroll squeezing inside Hill for the lead at the gate. The two
worked their way up the right side of the course while Wilmot chose the left, while a shift
and gust gave Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti the lead at the final mark that they refused to
relinquish. Hill took third, while Kiss finished a distant fourth, still with a slim but solid
lead over Carroll, Ryan DeVos on Volpe, and Kilroy. In Race six, the wheels fell off the bus
for Bacio; Kiss's first real misstep of the event. While Kilroy took a fourth and DeVos a 6th,

Kiss finished 12th. After the race, Golison read the scores over VHF radio, the call crackling through the air as it repeated over dozens of speakers. "Tied for
first: Samba Pa Ti and Bacio with 17 points each!" A busy spectator fleet crowded the start line as the teams converged for the final and deciding race of the
National Championship, and at the top mark, the first and second-placed Kiss and Kilroy were separated by a single boat length. As the boats jumped up on
plane and surged through the waves downwind, a slight misstep from Kiss let Jeff Ecklund's Star get close enough to affect his wind while Kilroy reveled in the
breezy, choppy conditions, and the race was effectively over. "I misjudged where we needed to be, and let Samba Pa Ti get away," said Kiss. "There aren't a lot
of second chances when it's all on the line with a team as good as Kilroy's." The three-time National Champion was disappointed but charged up. "This
definitely motivates us to train harder for the World championship in December," he said. Meanwhile, Kilroy was busy tearing through the remaining boats,
working his way to a big lead on the final leg. As the team crossed the line, Wilmot, Reynolds and Kilroy pumped their fists with sails flapping around them.
Kilroy was overjoyed with the victory, his second major sportboat title in less than a year. It was also payback for Kilroy's second-place against Kiss during last

looking forward to a lot more Melges racing in the months ahead." Taking eighth place overall, Toronto's Brian Hill won the Corinthian National
Championship as the top all-amateur team. "We're very happy with our performance, and barring one bad hoist we'd have done even better," said Hill. "I think
we proved that your profession isn't what gets you results in this Class; all you need are good sailors, a well-prepared boat, and lots of time on the water."
Twenty-one year old Ian Hollerbach aboard Fuku and 20 year-old Morgan Kiss on Baciami traded places all week long only to find themselves tied on exactly
77 points at the end of the regatta. Kiss won the tiebreaker to get 13th place overall. "It was awesome to have Morgan out there to use as a barometer for how
we were doing," said Hollerbach. The younger Kiss plans to compete right through the World Championship, while Hollerbach's plans are less definite. "I think
I'm going to be asking [mom] Karen soon if I can do it," he said. Kiss also went on to claim the trophy for 'top performance by a female skipper." For the first
time ever, the U.S. National Championship Opening Ceremony was streamed live on the internet. It's available for viewing or embedding at the Audi Melges 20
Ustream Channel. August 23, six Audi Melges 20 racers got together with SailingAnarchy.com's Alan Block for a live, 30 minute talk show about tuning the
Melges 20, the winter schedule and World championship, the new mast, just how open the class is with information and tips, tips for newbie helms, and much

2013 US Adult Sailing Championship for the Mallory Trophy

The 2013 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, hosted by the Rochester Yacht Club, came down to the wire in an epic finish on Lake Ontario. David Klatt's (Oxnard,
Calif.) talented team pulled out the victory with a win in a climactic final race to earn the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy. Klatt had a one point lead over Pat Toole
(Santa Barbara, Calif.) going into the last day. The top five teams were separated by just five points with two races to go. By the end of the regatta, Klatt
prevailed by four points over Pat Toole (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Bryan Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) finished nine points back in third place. Similar to the third
day's conditions, the J/24 fleet raced in a light southeasterly. Rodger Voss (Albany, N.Y.) won Race 7, followed by Klatt and Toole. The table was set for an
exciting finale. Toole got off the line with great speed and Klatt was directly to the leeward side of the course. Klatt took the lead around the first mark and
Dyer was second, followed by Fitzgerald and Toole. The wind picked up velocity throughout Race 8. Klatt and Toole were in a match racing duel in the course's
final leg, which had been extended by the Race Committee. Toole needed to pull ahead of Klatt and put two boats between him and Klatt to win championship.
However, Klatt pulled away for the dramatic win to seal the title. "We were in a mini tacking duel with Santa Barbara (Yacht Club) down the stretch,"
explained Klatt. "We rounded the top mark in second and our goal was do nothing radical, but Texas (Fort Worth Boat Club) got in the way. All three of us
jibed over at once. We were able drift in to win in the race. It was a great way to finish the regatta." "I've been competing with these guys for years now," said
Klatt, the 2004 J/24 North American Champion. "We also recruited some guys like tactician Garrett Baum." "I'd like to race again at J/24 Worlds. I haven't

excellence in Seamanship. The Staton J. Peele, Jr., Trophy was awarded to Russell Cook (Liverpool, N.Y.) for Sportsmanship. Charles Mallory, grandson of
Clifford D. Mallory presented the trophy to the winning team. The Adult Sailing Championship is a blend of the former Mallory Trophy for adult men and
Adams Cup for adult women. There were no representatives for Area K in 2013.

In a superb display of near-flawless match race sailing in Lake Michigan's light and lumpy conditions, Taylor Canfield of the US Virgin Islands and his Team
USone have won the 2013 CMRC Grand Slam, the first of four events in the US Grand Slam Series. Canfield and his crew of Rod Dawson (Main), Mike Rehe (Jib)
and Hayden Goodrick (Bow) repeated their win
last year with an impressive record of 18
matches won with only two lost. Canfield's
opponent in the Final, Chris Steele of New
Zealand, took the third match but could not win
the fourth, falling to Team USone 3-1 in the
series. This is the second win for Team USone,
having also won the top $25,000 prize in last
week's Chicago Match Cup. Ranked #2 in the
world, the team's win today will give them even
more points to help close the gap with World #1ranked Ian Williams and GAC Pindar of Great
Britain. "We were really pressed this week," said
Canfield, "and thanks to all the teams for some
great racing. From what we saw last week I can
see how many of them here would fit right in
next year at the Chicago Match Cup." This third
and last day of the event started like all the
others - clear cloudless skies, warm
temperatures, and light onshore breezes - and
there was just enough in the 6-7 knot
southeasterly breeze to start the Semi-Finals and
consolation round to determine 5th-8th places.

Being second to the reigning champion and #2-ranked in the world did not seem to upset Steele, who credited his mixed American and Kiwi team and his
supporters from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for their Silver medal performance.
In Petit-Final action, Tim Coltman, an intern this summer at Chicago Match Race Center and the lowest-ranked team in the event at 112th in the world, capped
off an impressive three days of racing by winning third place at the expense of the 12th-ranked Sehested. Coltman thanked his team and supporters at home at
the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington, New Zealand. And in consolation round results, David Storrs from Connecticut won two matches and a tiebreak to take fifth place, his best-ever result in three years of match race sailing, while Dustin Durant from Long Beach Match Racing earned sixth. Seventh
place went to Ashlen Rooklyn from Australia, and Chris Poole from Maine finished eighth. Many teams from this event will go on to the next stop in the US

The last day of the first International J/111 North American Championships dawned with the prospect that just about any team in the top six boats could win
the regatta. With a promising breeze flowing in from the east at dawn onto the spectacular Chicago shoreline and slowly building for the day (at least that was
the forecast) the final day of racing could be a real battleground. Could the Lucky Dubsters pull it off to win and maintain their lead? Or, could the wind wizards
on Windczar pull it out of their hats? And, if they could sail magnificently in their last day, could the Mental crew pull the rabbit out of the hat and take it all?
With racing scheduled to start at 1030, the Chicago Yacht Club Principal Race Officer and crew did a
magnificent job to get the ball rolling and after two general recalls the fleet took off into an ESE breeze
blowing 5-7 kts. With yet another “classic southeast sea-breeze” building, the big question would be
which way the “locals” would go and how would the “foreigners” figure it all out? With the breeze
fluctuating from 90 to 125 degrees, it was anyone’s guess what would happen. As it turns out, just about
any strategy worked so long as you stayed on the lifted tack. For the top five boats, it was going to pose a
difficult challenge. Sailing “lights out” was Dick Lehmann’s crew on Windczar taking the lead in the
regatta with a first place in race nine while Len Siegal’s Lucky Dubie had to score their worst score in the
series, a tenth. Paul Stahlberg’s crew on Mental sailed a great race, working their way through the fleet
to register a fourth and put themselves in a position to have a shot at the overall title. With the stage set
for the last race, it was anyone’s guess what the outcome would be for the overall title. In the end,
Lehmann’s team on Windczar stayed out of trouble, sailed a smart and conservative race to finish third
and were crowned the first overall J/111 North American Champions! While their disastrous ninth race
hurt their chances at the overall title, Len Siegal’s crew on Lucky Dubie concluded their regatta with an

them in contention for the lead. However, their last race performance became their discard race,
dropping them into third overall. Fourth in the regatta was Marty Roesch’s Velocity crew from Annapolis, Maryland and fifth was Bill Smith’s Wooton crew
from Bay Harbor, Michigan. The J/111 crews all had a wonderful time. Thanks to sponsors SLAM Gear, Stearns Boating, Skyway Yachtworks and friends of

2013 J/109 North American Championship

The 2013 J/109 NA Championship was in Chicago, sailed concurrent with the Verve Cup. This regatta is known for lighter winds so we had to get our settings,
tune, and boat set-up accordingly. The other consideration was the use of a larger 120 square-meter asymmetrical in place of the standard class 108 squaremeter sail. As Quantum’s J/Boat team leader, I headed up the sails and boat tuning for Rick Lyall’s Storm and Al Goethe’s Hamburg, providing accurate sail
design and tuning information. Starting with what we learned from winning last year’s North American Championship and this year’s East Coast
Championship, we felt very confident in our 8+ knots of speed.
Our goal was to work on the light-air setup to keep speed in the boat. We also had to factor in traffic conditions created by other classes on the same
racecourse and the Chicago wave conditions. There were times where you just had to sail low and keep the boat moving. Overall, it seemed like our
competition could not sail as fast as us for most of the regatta. Downwind, we relied on an asymmetrical spinnaker design by Quantum sail designer David
Armitage, which had already proven fast in similar conditions four years ago. I selected this design for its ability to sail well in light winds when you need to
heat-up the sailing angle to keep the asymmetrical pressured and the boat speed up. The nice thing about this sail is its versatility; it can sail high and fast or

low without losing distance to your competitors. In the end, Storm edged out Hamburg to win its third North American Championship. The racing was tight
between the two boats. Here are the top lessons learned by the Storm crew:
1. Get off the line in a clean lane. If you need to have a clearing tack, do it early, and get the boat to speed.
2. Be patient. There was an oscillating shift in the wind most of the regatta. Set importance on being on the lifted tack, and be patient enough to wait
for a favorable shift before making a move.
3. Keep the boat moving. Downwind in light lump, putting pressure on the Asymmetrical and speed are king.
4. Never give up. You might not win every race, but you sure can catch boats and move up in the standings.

2013 Verve Cup Regatta

After daily postponements due to light winds, competitors got to enjoy some decent breeze and solid racing on the final day of the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta
at the Chicago Yacht Club. Race Chairman Martin Sandoval said the decision to start the race an hour later today ended up serving the competitors well.
“There was a little bit of a wait time, but once the wind filled in, the conditions allowed the Race Committee to get two races in today,” Sandoval said. "For the
racers, the winds averaged 6-8 knots for both races - they were shifty, which made it challenging, but that's part of the fun, figuring out the puzzle that Mother
Nature gives you and making something out of it." Principal Race Officer Helle Getz said she was thrilled with the racing that took place. “To come up with a
total of seven races for the weekend, in the kind of conditions that we had was great. All the way around, I believe that the sailors were very happy. It was a
good, successful regatta," Getz said. Tartan Ten Honey Badger, owned by Thomas Kane of Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club, was declared overall Verve Cup
Trophy winner. Winning the Distance Race in the ORR Division was Liberty 2, a C&C 115 owned by Thomas & Virginia Blasco of the Chicago Yacht Club in
Section 1; On Edge, a Thomas 35 owned by Steve Dorfman of the Chicago Yacht Club in Section 2; and Providence, an Erickson 35 MK II owned by Jerry and
Greg Miarecki of the Chicago Yacht Club in Section 3. ORR section winners will get their names on the 8 Mile Buoy Trophy. The J/109 North American
Championship sailed concurrently, starting August 8 and finishing August 11 and was won by Rick Lyall’s Storm. Lyall is a member of the New York Yacht Club
and the Storm Trysail Club. Also taking place concurrently was the Beneteau 40.7 North American Championship, with first place going to Vayu, owned by
Ron Buzil of Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club. This year 135 boats took part in the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta. The event features a three-day offshore course
race on Friday through Sunday, as well as a one-day distance race taking place on Saturday. As one of the largest course-racing regatta in North America,
Verve Cup has developed as a world-class event, attracting national and international sailing competitors. Competitors participate in multiple races, and boats
sail either with a rating handicap or a one design so that boats of different size and character can compete against one another in one of the 18-plus racing
sections. Overall prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each section, with one offshore boat winning the perpetual Verve Cup Trophy. The Verve Cup
trophy dates from 1893 and is Chicago Yacht Club’s oldest trophy. Overall prizes are awarded for each class of boat.

Taylor Canfield and USone bounced back from 0-2 to take a last-gasp victory at the 2013 Chicago Match Cup. Representing the US Virgin Islands but also a
hometown favorite as race director of the Chicago Match Race Center, the crowd of spectators went silent with tension as Canfield and USone's Tom 28
keelboat rumbled towards the finish line of the final match, little more than a boatlength ahead of Keith Swinton and Black Swan Racing from Australia. Then
the crowd on Navy Pier erupted into whoops and cheers as USone took their third consecutive victory, and with it the winning paycheck of $25,000 from a
total prize fund of $100,000, the biggest prize money in American sailing. Canfield offered the perfect riposte to his early exit from Stena Match Cup Sweden a
month earlier, his victory in Chicago rocketing him up the leaderboard on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. Bjorn Hansen's eWork Sailing Team also won
an important victory in taking the final match of the Petit Final against reigning Tour World Champion, Ian Williams and GAC Pindar.
It was a glorious Sunday at the east end of Navy Pier, with tens of thousands of spectators lured by the action on the water, the vendors on site, and the live
narration given by both the AWMRT media team and crowd commentator, Olympic silver medallist Mark Covell. Broadcast to the world on a live TV feed, the
excitement built to a fever pitch as the crowd cheered Canfield and his USone team towards their impressive comeback victory.
The day had not looked promising, with a forecast of feeble 5 knot offshore zephyrs that seemed to validate yesterday's decision to get some kind of result on
the board just in case. But the sun warmed the lake front enough to generate some onshore pressure, which built enough to the Finals to have some very
sailable 7-9 knots. In Match 2, with one point already to his favor, Swinton was keen to demonstrate he had not lost the momentum he had on the previous
day, and his early lead in the match seemed to show this was true. But Canfield gained on the right side of the second beat enough to dial down the Aussies off
their layline from the left. A quick tack from Canfield and a jib-down luff from Swinton forced a penalty on Canfield, followed by a red flag from the umpires for
this having changed control of the match. The penalty turn then put Canfield out of contention and Swinton up 2-0. Now up against the ropes in the first-tothree point series, Canfield took and held the early lead in the Match 3, comfortable and defendable. But on the first hoist a 2-metre long tear appeared in the
luff of the spinnaker near the head, jeopardizing this lead at any moment if the tear grew any larger to destroy the sail. Moreover, Canfield and team had to use
this sail for the last run to the finish, so the pressure was on to take their gains on the next beat. Free to take the favored right, Canfield did build a little more
margin to survive the run with the torn kite and stay alive. In Match 4 it was Swinton off the line in the strong right side position, which they used to keep and
maintain a slim lead for the first lap of the course. But gains by Canfield on the left side brought the teams back to within striking range towards the top of the
second beat, and a late decision to try and dial down Canfield followed by a quick tack caused a hefty collision, with the resulting penalty now going to Swinton
as well as the lead. Despite a valiant effort on the final run, the Aussies could not close the gap and the score now went to 2-2. The final match was less
dramatic, with no torn sails or crashing dial-downs, just smooth execution by Canfield and his team to take the early lead and extend, bring it to 3-2 and the
title win for the event. Canfield was ecstatic. "Winning a Tour event here in Chicago here is the best thing ever. The fan base on shore is incredible, we're so
happy to win the Chicago Match Cup. There has been a lot of hype about us winning and in the end we brought it home, coming back from two down." The
Finals was the closing act of a five-day celebration of sail that included Tall Ships Chicago, where 14 tall ships from around the US helped draw crowds to Navy

The single- and doublehanded fleets tallied one more race each at the final day of racing for the Chubb U.S. Junior Championships. The triplehanded fleet failed
to complete a race on the last day. Nic Baird (St. Petersburg, Fla.) won the Smythe Trophy, taking five of 10 races to win by a 24-point margin. Kristopher
Swanson (Kentfield, Calif.) and Alexander Ron (Belvedere, Calif.) held their lead with a last race seventh place to win Bemis Trophy by 11 points. With their
come from behind win in the last race sailed, the team of Jack Barton (San Anselmo, Calif.), Sammy Shea, Sam Barton and Alex Moody captured the Sears Cup
by four points. Teams raced in lighter breezes the last day on Galveston Bay. This 2013 US Sailing National Championship was hosted by the Houston Yacht
Club and Texas Corinthian Yacht Club. First sailed in 1921, this is US Sailing’s oldest championship. Each US Sailing Area is eligible to send at least one
sailor/team to compete in each of the fleets. Sailors race in boats provided at the event site to ensure the quality of the equipment and a level playing field. A
one day racing clinic led by US Sailing’s Junior National Coach Rich Feeny was held prior to the start of the championship. The clinics included U.S. Senior
Olympic Coach Luther Carpenter and College of Charleston’s Coach Ward Cromwell. As part of the 2013 Olympic Sailing Night Series, Carpenter educated the
participating young sailors about the many pathways to Olympic sailing success. Competing sailors participated in a Gill College Night seminar. The
opportunity provided young sailors a chance to learn and interact with college sailing coaches and athletes to discuss the recruiting process, competition at
the collegiate level, and other expectations and challenges that comes with being a collegiate sailor.

In a contest for a cause, Chicago's "land-based" professional and collegiate sports stars and politicians, along with local students from Rickover Academy,
competed on a new aquatic playing field: the waves of Lake Michigan as they sailed in the inaugural Chicago Sports Commission Charity Challenge, a pro-am
competition to benefit World Sport Chicago and officially kick off the 2013
Chicago Match Cup. Chris Collins, Northwestern University basketball coach,
WGN-TV's Dan Roan, and Martin Heft, an alumnus of Rickover Academy, joined
forces with reigning Match Race World Champion and 2012 Chicago Match Cup
champion Ian Williams' team. Chicago Match Race Center, host of the Chicago
Match Cup week-long sailing competition at Navy Pier, made a $25,000 donation
in the team's name to World Sport Chicago. Collins beat out a crowded field of
Chicago's sport and political elite. The other celebrity sports stars and sailors
included: 2nd place: Robin Earl, former Chicago Bears player and Liam Gorzen,
student at Rickover Academy sailed with Taylor Canfield, rising match racing star
from the US Virgin Islands and Sailing Director of Chicago Match Race Center
(USone sailing team); 3rd place: Jerry Hester, former University of Illinois
basketball player and Pedro Ochoa, student at Rickover Academy, led by skipper
Adam Minoprio, of New Zealand (Team Alpari FX); 4th place: Tony Esposito,
Chicago Blackhawks legend; Cassie Perez, student at Rickover Academy, and
Congressman Adam Schock joined Don Wilson, founder of the Chicago Match
Race Center. "I had no sailing experience, so being in a boat with the best in the
world, seeing how the boat operates and its ins and outs was incredible," said
Collins. "I didn't realize match race sailing was so aggressive. To learn about the
sport and its competitive aspects was awesome." The four boats engaged in two fleet
races to determine scoring for a match race final. Williams' team and Canfield's team

battled head to head before Williams took a strong lead in the last leg to take the overall
win. The win gave Williams the opportunity to present the CMRC's donation check for $25,000. "We are excited and honored to accept this generous
donation to support Olympic and Para-Olympic sports in Chicago," said Linda Mastandrea of World Sport Chicago. The charity works to enhance participation
in sport by youth across Chicago. Others VIP's in the Chicago sports world attending the event were John Murray, Chairman of the Chicago Sports
Commission, and Mickey Johnson, former power forward for the Chicago Bulls.
2013 Chester Kuttner Memorial Regatta

The Chester Kuttner Memorial Regatta is held to honor the memory of one of Chicago's great sailors. Kuttner was born in Chicago and lived
his entire life in the city. He always said that he made his living in advertising, but he sailed for a living. Kuttner was an athlete for most of
his life and sailed in more than 1,500 races in the Chicago area, including 58 consecutive Chicago to Mackinac races. At the age of 78, the
year before he died, Chester won first place in his division in the 1992 Mackinac race with his boat, Kutty’s Ark. In 1937 he founded Kuttner
& Kuttner, Inc., which at the time was one of the oldest privately owned advertising agencies in Chicago. A lifetime member of the Columbia
Yacht Club, a former Commodore of the Island Goat Sailing Society and Director of the Sail Squadron of the Lake Michigan Yachting
Association, he was born to sail.

Winning six races from a full program of 11 contests on the Bay of Palma, Quantum Racing won the 32nd Copa del Rey for the 52 SUPER SERIES for the first
time. The American team, which is skippered by Ed Baird, enjoyed the sparkling sea breeze which topped 20kts at times during the last race to deliver the
final race victory, running out their third successive 52 SUPER SERIES regatta win after triumphs in Barcelona and Ibiza. Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing
started the week with three back-to-back wins before Quantum Racing really hit their straps, composing five race victories in succession and building a
momentum that Rán Racing could not halt. Rán came close on Friday but Doug DeVos’ team was the dominant team over Saturday the last day, finishing with a
2,1 flourish to ensure their overall margin is 9.5pts ahead of Zennström’s world championship winners. Zennström, whose team won the Royal Cup last year
on the same waters, admitted the Quantum Racing crew were pretty much unstoppable, “At the end of this regatta we are pretty happy with second. We
wanted to win regatta, we gave it a shot and we are sailing the boat well but Quantum Racing are just sailing better.” For the Quantum Racing team, formed in
2008, it is the first time they have won Spain’s biggest and most prestigious regatta. Last year they were on course but a mechanical breakdown ruined their
chances. Ironically their team is strengthened this season by Palma based Olympic Gold Medalist Jordi Calafat who also guided the Copa del Rey winning 52
last season, Audi ALL4ONE. Until last year’s success, Calafat had more than 25 years of trying to win the top trophy at his home club, stacking up dozens of
seconds and thirds, but now wins two in consecutive years, “After a long time waiting for now I have got two King's cups in a row. I am very happy. Hopefully I
don’t want to stop this streak. We are the best professional crew in the world. I'm very happy in this project. Today we sailed very well. We have made a great
second race today.” Quantum Racing partnered excellent boatspeed to great starting to achieve their success around a course area which in the end lived up to
its reputation as a strongly left side favored arena. Tactician Terry Hutchinson paid tribute to the entire crew, noting Calafat’s contribution on his home waters
and Ed Baird’s starts, “Jordi is on his home waters and so you sail confidently when you have someone of his talents on board. That was great and we got on a
bit of roll in the middle of the week when Ed was getting some cracker starts and the boat is fast,” said Hutchinson.

The Rhodes 19 Fleet held their annual Women’s Skippers Regatta, named in honor of Doris Tschudy, on Saturday, July 27. There were seven boats competing.
Two good races were held in the brisk northwest winds on an unusually cold (low 60’s) July day. With the leftover swells from the north, it was an exciting day
to race. The lead changed often and the finishes were tight. Carrie Camarda repeated as the champion, though she needed a tie breaker to do it. She sailed with
her Dad, Vince Camarda, and brother, Andy Camarda, as her crew. Second place went to Dominque Zinserling sailing with Bob Bernstein. She was consistent

with two second place finishes. Dominique has started racing in Rhodes 19s after a stint in the Junior Fleet (she is the current Junior Fleet Sailor of the Year),
and is following in Carrie’s footsteps from beginner to champion. --Bruce Thompson

A Lost Boat Gets Found
While on the way to the center pin, the Race Committee came upon a capsized single scull without skipper. The story has a happy ending, as with cooperation
of the Chicago Marine Police and the Park District lifeguards, we were able to send it back to its owner from the Lincoln Park Boat Club. This is an unusual
occurrence, but is a good case study of working with others to promote safe boating. We secured the boat alongside the Race Committee boat and hit the MOB
button on the GPS to establish a datum from which to launch a search and rescue mission. We called the police on VHF Channel 16 to report our find. They
advised us that the owner was safe ashore and asking them for help in locating his boat. They asked us to switch to another working channel, VHF Channel 11,
to guide them to meet us. We saw their flashing blue lights and started to direct them to us. Meanwhile the life guards came out to us based on our description
of being three-quarter miles off Montrose Point. With a distance and bearing from a fixed point, they had no trouble meeting us. The police had a bit harder
time as, with our low freeboard, we were hard to see among the waves. But the meeting took place and the boat was sent on its way home. We especially
thank Kathy Camarda for her help on the Race Committee.--Bruce Thompson
