College Council
From the Principal’s Desk
Congratulations to our newly
elected 2016 P&C Executive
Special thanks and appreciation to the
outgoing president Mr Steven Durrington,
for his service to the College and the P&C
over the last two years. He has been so
generous with both his time and support of
the College through carnivals, P&C,
significant events and the many, many College meetings,
information nights and forums. Thank you also to Mrs Karen
Brennen for her years of service as Treasurer, she has had a
long association with the P&C across the education of three
children at the College, Mrs Brennens efforts are valued and her
support very much appreciated. Mrs McLeod has agreed to
remain and been elected as secretary, Thanks you for your
continued commitment and support. Vice President, Mr Darren
Tsimpikas has moved to another role, as is evident in what
follows his service is also acknowledged. P&C executive is
never an easy role and all of these people volunteer their time
very generously, our College is advantaged by their
commitment and dedication and very grateful for their service.
Congratulations to our 2016 P&C Executive:
Mr Darren Tsimpikas – President
Mrs Amanda Bolewski – Vice President
Mrs Hazel Edwards – Treasurer
Mrs Debbie McLeod – Secretary
The College looks forward to working with this new team
on the many projects and through all of the successes
and challenges a school year brings.
As an Independent Public School we have are fortunate to
have a School Council to support the administration in guiding
the strategic direction of the College. As such our Council,
established two years ago, is engaged in:
• Monitoring the College’s strategic direction,
approving plans and policies of the College affecting
strategic matters including the annual estimate of
revenue and expenditure;
• Monitoring the implementation of these plans and
advising the College principal on these matters.
Above all, it is intended that the School Council performs its
functions, from a strategic perspective, in a way that achieves
the best learning outcomes for all students. The Council
membership has a two year cycle for tenure and elections
following the guidelines of the constitution. For the purposes
of consistency, a new Council (in its first term as ours is) may
continue some of its members into a third year.
Before listing our Council representatives, I would like to
acknowledge and thank Council’s out-going members: Mr
Steven Durrington (2015 P&C President), Mr Colin O’Connor
(LJ Hooker Algester) and Ms Lee-Ann Norris (Griffith University).
These three Memebers have provided our Council with a
community perspective and challenge, which has helped shape
the direction of our College in the last two years. Mr Durrington
and Mr O’Conner have supported the College in other
capacities, well known to the community, and for this we are
very grateful.
Our 2016 College Council consists of the following members:
Two official members:
College Principal: Ms Lisa Starmer
P&C Association President: Mr Steve Durrington
(retiring) and Mr Darren Tsimpikas (newly appointed)
Two Parent Representatives: Mr Charles Alder (Chair)
and Mr Mike Butler (both continuing)
Two Staff Representatives: Mrs Jackie Welch (Junior
School Principal) and Ms Gretchen Bucher
(both continuing)
Two Student Representatives: TBA College Captains
Two Appointed Members: Mr Colin O’Connor (retiring)
and Ms Lee-Ann Norris (retiring)
(new appointees to be announced after Term 1 Council
Meeting)
Welcome to all of our new appointments; we look forward
to several more announcements by our Council Chair. With
such vibrant and enthusiastic parent and community support,
we look forward to a very successful academic, sporting and
artistic 2016.

Drop-off and pick-up areas
2 minute parking sign
Drop-off and pick-up areas, where you can
quickly set down and pick up your children,
are common outside schools (always on the
school side of the road). They create a safe
environment for children and keep traffic
moving. Drop-off and pick-up areas are
signed with passenger loading zone signs or 2 minute parking
signs. These signs mean you have a maximum of 2 minutes for
parking and to drop off or collect your children.
How they work
There can often be queues at drop-off and pick-up areas
outside schools.
When using a drop-off and pick-up area you:
• must use the area like a quick moving taxi rank
• need to move forward in the queue of vehicles to the
signed area
• can get out of your vehicle to quickly help your
children get in and out safely (once in the signed
area)—however you must not walk away from your
vehicle
• are only allowed 2 minutes maximum in the signed
area (if you take any longer you can be fined)—if your
children are not ready to get straight into your vehicle
at pick-up time, you will need to drive round the
block and queue to enter the area again
• should only let your children out once you have
pulled into the signed area (it is dangerous to let
them out while waiting in a queue)
• should teach your children to look out for your vehicle
and to get in quickly when you pull up
2
• must enter front in (never reverse).
A few drop-off and pick-up areas are supervised by a volunteer
traffic coordinator who:
• can help your children get into or out of your vehicle
• will make sure you only stay in the area for 2 minutes
(to avoid traffic build up).
If your drop-off and pick-up area has a traffic coordinator, you
should stay in your vehicle at all times (they will help your
children instead).
Advantages of drop-off and pick-up areas
Drop-off and pick-up areas help to make school zones safe
because:
• children are dropped off and picked up close to the
school’s entrance (so they do not need to cross any
roads)
• they reduce traffic jams around the school (as
parents and carers come and go faster than if they
were to park and walk into the school grounds)
• younger (non-school aged) children can stay in
vehicles while their older siblings are dropped off and
picked up—they do not need to walk, or be pushed
or carried, to the school’s entrance
Dear Parents and Carers,
Firstly, thank you so much for your patience and cooperation
in safely exiting our students from the College. The Facilities
and Administration team appreciate your willingness to work
together to get everyone home as safely and as quickly as
possible.
As of Wednesday 17 February, the College, has prepared and
opened an additional carpark on site for senior students and
staff, which will help provide more spaces in the Council
carparks. Whilst this facility is not completed, it is ready for use
and provides access onto the service road that runs parallel to
Beaudesert Road. This should assist with the flow of traffic at
the Secondary School entrance.
Whilst Junior School traffic moves reasonably well, we have
many cars parked for up to twenty minutes, drivers inside,
engines on, waiting for students to appear at the front of the
College. This causes a significant backlog of parked cars onto
Hamish Street and a double parked row of cars in front of
the College. As of Monday 22 February, the staff assisting to
manage the flow of pedestrians and cars across the front of
the school during Junior School collection time, will be asking
you to abide by the two minute ‘drop off zone’ regulations. The
regulations are outlined on the reverse of this letter for your
information.
This means that cars will have to move across the front of
the College, and if the children are not in the blue-shaded
pick-up zone, move through, out onto Hamish Street, round the
roundabout and through the second roundabout and back into
the pick-up zone, hopefully to collect the children.
Thank you again for your continuing patience and support,
we hope that these measures will further improve the traffic
congestion. Mr Bear and I, along with additional staff will
continue to manage the pedestrian crossing and the carpark/
drop-off exit to ensure a streamlined process.
Please remember that parents who collect their children from
supervised, blue-shaded pick-up zone in front of the College
at 3.10pm, encounter almost no traffic. Thank you for your
understanding and cooperation, we already have
improvements that make our students safer.
Secondary School News
Welcome to Secondary School
Here at Calamvale Community College we
are indeed fortunate to have a significant
number of families who are actively involved
in their students’ education. In study after
study, researchers discover how important
it is for parents/guardians to be actively
involved in their student’s education. Some
of the main findings from this research
indicate that when parents/guardians are involved in their
student’s education at home, they are more successful at
school. Secondly, when parents are involved in school, children
remain at school for longer and the schools they go to are more
successful.
As a family you make critical contributions to your student’s
achievement from preschool through high school. Research
indicates that a home environment that encourages learning
is more important to student achievement than income,
educational level or cultural background. When children and
parents talk regularly about school, children perform better
academically.
On this note, I would like to thank and congratulate those
families who attended the recent secondary information
sessions. These sessions were very well attended by secondary
families and provided the opportunity to hear about college
expectations, the year ahead for students and how parents
could best support their children. Thank you also to all staff who
supported these information sessions.
Secondary School Photos
Secondary School photos will take place this Friday 19
February. I would ask for your support in helping to ensure
your child is correctly dressed in their formal uniform for these
photos. A reminder that students who are not in their correct
formal uniform will NOT be photographed in incorrect uniform,
with hair down, make up or jewellery on.

Griffith University Business Program
Congratulations to five of our Year 12 students who have been
accepted into the Year 12 Business Program at Griffith
University. This is a great opportunity for these students to
undertake a course of study at university whilst completing Year
12 at Calamvale Community College. We wish them all the very
best in their academic endeavours this year.
Swimming Carnival
Last Tuesday was our annual secondary swimming carnival and
it turned out to be a fantastic event with nearly all our staff and
students making the most of the occasion to dress up in their
House colours and get involved in the different activities on the
day. Thank you to parents who came along and supported the
carnival and congratulations to staff and students for all their
support in helping to make last Tuesday was one of, if not, the
best swimming carnivals we have had. Special thank you and
congratulations to Ms Kylie Storey and her team for all their
work in organising and running the swimming carnival.

Uniform Amendment Secondary School
Please note that an amendment to the Secondary Boys formal
shorts has been made. Boys in Secondary School are now able
to wear either the Junior Secondary (elastic waist) or the Senior
Secondary (zip and button) style of formal short. We appreciate
the feedback we have had regarding the change to the formal
short from Junior Secondary into Senior Secondary and have
amended the Dress Code accordingly.
We have had a brilliant start to the school year with students
looking fantastic in formal uniform at all times coming to and
going from school. Thank you to those parents who have met
the requirements of the Dress Code and support the College
in our endeavours to have pride in our College and continue
building on our safe and supportive culture. Thanks also to
those families who have received a call from their student’s
House Leader or Head of Program about uniform and have
rectified the issue within agreed times. We are keen to work
with you to achieve Dress Code standards. Students are
becoming more familiar with wearing a hat to and from school
each and every day and have been helped along the way by
friendly Administration staff who are out and about to ensure
this is the case.
UPCOMING EVENTS!
World’s Greatest Shave – Thursday 10 March we will be
supporting the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for blood
cancers. As in the past, students will be able to have their
heads shaved for a good cause. To do this students need to
register online with World’s Greatest Shave and have raised at
least $50 to have the “Shave” done at school.
Other fundraisers for this day will include:

IB PYP Update
Digital Citizenship has been the focus of
learning in the Junior School over the
beginning weeks of school as well as the
explicit teaching of the IB Learner Profile
attitudes.
Digital Citizenship- What does
this mean?
1st
Eduardo
At our school, we believe it is imperative that students
understand what it means to be responsible online citizens.
During explicit teaching sessions, students have been
developing the skills and strategies needed to maintain a clean
digital footprint and stay safe online. Students in Year 4-6 also
attended a Cyber Safety session with outside facilitators to help
them learn about leaving a positive online footprint.

Study Tour
This week we welcomed 14 students from the Yuxiu area of
China into the Junior School and our Year 6 classrooms. The
students were only here for a week, but made the most of their
time immersing themselves into our Australian culture as well
as life at Calamvale Community College. I am sure our students
enjoy this cultural exchange and those who welcomed these
students into their homes, have made a special connection that
will last far beyond this short stay in our country.

honesty in all we do say and think
Respect: Valuing our self, others and the world around
us.
Tolerance: Showing consideration towards differences

The PYP Attitudes are woven into class discussions, student
reflections and learning activities. When reinforced at home,
these attitudes become second nature for children.
You will hear the language of IB PYP Attitudes used daily across
the school in teacher interactions with students and fellow
colleagues. They are highlighted on the green cards alongside
our two school rules so that teachers can acknowledge the
‘attitude’ students display in and around the classroom. The
‘attitudes’ are also referenced in the Teacher Awards given out
each week on our assemblies as well as our digital sign at the
front of the school
Do you want to find out more?
In 2015 we hosted a number of parent information sessions
about IB PYP and this will continue in 2016. The first of these
was at last week’s Meet the Teacher event. The next IB PYP
parent information sessions will be:
Wednesday 27 April at 9.15am
Thursday 28 April at 6.00pm
