A Message from the President
Welcome to the annual SDCA conference in beautiful Spearfish! A huge “Thank you!” goes to Past President
and conference chair June Reilly and the West River Chapter for all of their hard work and commitment to
making this a wonderful event for all of us.
This year’s theme, “Counselors…Helping Screenwriters Edit the Script of Their Lives” is a bit of a departure from
the traditional themes of past SDCA conferences. It was my goal to get everyone thinking differently about the
role that counselor’s play in the lives of their clients. While we work with our clients to achieve their goals, it is a
process and a variety of changes take place before the final goal is realized, just like a scriptwriter goes through
a variety of drafts before the movie is made from the finished product. Ironically enough, Oscar-nominated
filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, writer and director of movies such as Supersize Me, was the keynote speaker at
the annual ACA conference in Honolulu. Mr. Spurlock’s CNN show, “Inside Man,” is now in its second season.
“Inside Man” puts a person into a new life situation for 30 days. Some of his shows have focused on living the
life of an illegal immigrant, living on minimum wage, and being an elderly person in American today. Mr. Spurlock showed a clip of his show, in which he lived with his own 90 year old grandmother for 30 days. She was
living in her own home and openly discussed end of life issues and elder care. Unfortunately, Morgan’s grandmother passed away a few months after filming. He made the courageous decision to showcase the mourning
process on the show as well. His presentation really got me thinking…How well do we really know what our clients are going through? While we try to go on the journey with them, how well do we really see things from their
perspective? I love it when a presentation challenges me to examine how I am working with clients and inspires
me to continue to grow and develop as a counselor.
I hope that this year’s conference provides you with an opportunity to refresh yourselves and to reinvigorate your
passion for the profession of counseling. I know that I love the chance to learn new techniques and listen to
presenters who are in the field trying out new ideas. This is also my favorite time of year as I get to see old
friends, make new ones, and spend time with those who truly understand what I go through every day.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you as this year’s SDCA president. This experience has helped me to grow
personally and professionally. I have been able to meet counselors from across the nation and have had the
opportunity to speak up on issues that impact counselors in South Dakota, such as issues with the VA’s training
programs and access granted to LPCs. In addition, I have had the privilege of working with members of the
SDCA board. These volunteers give their time to SDCA and do an excellent job of representing our members. I
would challenge each of you to find a way to volunteer for SDCA. Remember, we are only a strong organization
if we have people continue to volunteer to assist with organizing the conference and carrying on the mission of
SDCA.

Lights, Camera, Action: Mentors from the Movies) focuses on cinema as a therapeutic tool, a venue filled with wise narratives. The best mentors from film during the past 40 years will be edited into vignettes. Attendees will have an opportunity in
small groups to discuss movie mentors and the therapeutic value of understanding mentoring through cinema. While
the learning environment is to be casual, and could be described as structured networking, the topic is a therapeutic one.

Lakota Circles of Hope (LCH) is an innovative culturally specific prevention curriculum that teaches students how to use their culture to
deal more effectively with risky behaviors such as drugs, alcohol,
tobacco usage, bullying, and suicide. The curriculum is intended to
foster a positive Lakota identity and enhance students' understanding of Lakota culture. The presentation will center on the Lakota Circles of Hope Program. Presenters will also discuss their program
evaluation data, compiled since 2008. Part of the presentation will
focus on the concept "We are all related" which deals with Lakota
Culture. The workshop will end with a LCH activity.

Counseling with children and adolescents can be immensely frustrating or splendidly
gratifying. The truth of this statement is so obvious that the supportive reference, at least
according to many adolescents is, “Duh!” In this workshop participants will sharpen their
counseling skills by viewing and discussing video clips from actual sessions and
participating in live demonstrations. Over 20 specific cognitive, emotional, and constructive
counseling techniques will be illustrated and/or demonstrated. Examples include
acknowledging reality, informal assessment, the affect bridge, therapist spontaneity, early
interpretations, asset flooding, externalizing language, and more. Countertransference,
suicide assessment and intervention, challenging parents, and multicultural issues also will
be highlighted.
Speaker Bio: John Sommers-Flanagan is a professor of counselor education at the
University of Montana. He is also a mental health consultant with Trapper Creek Job
Corps. Along with his wife Rita, he is the author of Tough Kids, Cool Counseling (ACA,
2007), Counseling and Psychotherapy Theories in Context and Practice (John Wiley &
Sons, 2012), and seven other books. In his wild and precious spare time, John loves to run
(slowly), dance (poorly), laugh (at himself) and produce home-made family music videos.
Dr. Sommers-Flanagan will have a limited number of his books for sale during the preconference and after the Friday keynote.

"Relating From the View of Teens"
Presented by the Sturgis Brown High School Youth Leadership Team
May 1, 2014 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM – Cottonwood Room
Being a teenager in today's society is much different than it was in previous generations. The Sturgis
Brown High School (SBHS) Youth Leadership Team members will demonstrate and discuss some of
the current issues and trends impacting teens today. They will focus primarily on relational aggression,
cyber-bullying, and bullying prevention. Their presentation will prove to be an educational view from the
perspective of teens.
The Youth Leadership Team at SBHS is a youth-led adult-driven organization with community support.
There are approximately 40 members in this group and the focus is prevention and intervention of current teen issues that affect students socially and academically. The students are led by Dadra Avery,
Shelly Lammers, and Pam Anderson. Dadra and Shelly are school counselors at SBHS.

“Relating to Those Who Are Different From Me”
Presented by Dr. Stephen Saiz

Effectively relating to someone who is different from me requires that I understand them within the context that they live their lives. This presentation will explore how I understand myself, and will help me
understand and overcome 'privilege'.
After a 20 year career as a primary school teacher and school counselor Dr. Saiz returned to school in
1996 for his doctorate in Counselor Education at USD. While at USD he was twice awarded the Crazy
Horse Scholarship and was recognized as 1999's Outstanding Doctoral Student of the Counseling and
School Psychology Department. Dr. Saiz then took a position in the Counselor Education Department
of SUNY Plattsburgh, New York, and served as Chairperson of that department from 2006 to his retirement from SUNY in 2012. While at SUNY Plattsburgh, Dr. Saiz received the Dean of Professional Studies teaching award in 2004 and the SUNY wide Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2009.
Upon leaving SUNY Dr. Saiz returned with his family to the Rapid City area, near the Pine Ridge Reservation where he began his teaching career in 1976. (1 contact hour)

Research has demonstrated that over 80% of all communication is non-verbal. This presentations

the clients, their needs, and emotional limitations.
We’re Not in Kansas Anymore: Helping Your Clients Through the Coming Out Process

Challenges to the “Coming Out” process, for LGBT clients and/or students, can include fear of rejection, isolation, as well as physical, sexual, and psychological abuse/damage. Research shows
that LGBT youth are 3-4 times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual counterpoints
and are more likely to be sexually abused. This presentation will provide helping professionals
with the tools necessary to begin the process of becoming more multiculturally competent when
working with sexual minorities.
Pursuing the Good Life: From Surviving to Thriving

“Conquering the Test!” is a small psychoeducational group designed for students to experience new skills, techniques, and strategies regarding test anxiety. This presentation will highlight evidence-based research for anxiety among students; provide assessment tools and

Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault

Resources available to high schools in South Dakota to address teen dating violence will be
discussed through a cooperative arrangement between the South Dakota Department of
Health, Northern State University, and the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and
Sexual Assault.

LGBT individuals have long been under represented and stereotypically showcased in mainstream media and/or advertisements. As counselors, we need to be aware of the portrayal
and images being projected onto this population and how we can best assist them in
developing a healthy view of self.
HS Prevention Presentation
Tim McGowan, MA and Jenny Griffin, MA – Canyon Room
Keep your students engaged and owning the choices they make in this successful
experiential learning program. Students are presented with scenarios and facts about
drinking, cutting, body image, suicide, dating, friendships and everyday life, and
corresponding activities facilitate students’ reflection of their choices. Feedback loops
are developed between students and adults, further challenging students to evaluate
content presented.
Grief: A New Approach to Treatment
Cristi Habermann, MA, LPC, CCDCII – Willow Room
When treating grief Elizabeth Kibbler-Ross’s stages of grief is the theory of choice.
The application is more difficult in a clinical setting. New treatment theories and
interventions are available increasing client satisfaction and better outcome.
Barriers and Factors Influencing Persistence of First Year American Indian Students
Urla Marcus, Ed.D – Aspen Room
BHSU’s American Indian Bridge Program immerses freshman in a rigorous academic
life, while helping them formulate an effective plan for academic, social, and cultural
success their first year. These freshmen are interviewed to gain insight on the barriers
that emerged and factors that led to persistence during their first year.

This presentation helps to educate counselors on the ins and outs of the IEP process
as well as assists them in being an active part of the IEP team. This presentation will
provide insight in how to work on social, career, and academic achievement while
following the IEP recommendations. In addition, we will discuss IEP terminology ad the
best way to advocate for those students we serve.
It’s Not All Animal House: Working With Kids in College
Rachael Anderson, MA, Ph.D. Candidate – Cedar Room
This presentation is to help all counselors better understand the changing climate of
mental health on campuses across the country. The role of student services on
campuses, as well as the variety of accommodations and assistance available can be
diverse and confusing.

Religious Narratives in Counseling

This program will highlight the historical influences of religious and spiritual practice on
counseling, interact with how to utilize religious themes and texts in a therapeutic relationship, and identify barriers and professional and ethical concerns of the use of religious
themes and narratives in counseling.
The Financial Brain: Why it Responds in Ways We Regret
Dave Jetson, MS, LPC-MH – Swarm Room
Much brain research is occurring that is attempting to create an explanation for patterns
and responses that people have in life. The research I am proposing to present is how the
brain processes financial decisions. I will explain what function each part of the brain plays
in creating financial decisions as well as a course of action to help create more successful
financial outcomes.
iAM Connected
Ashley Seeklander, M.S.Ed – Canyon Room
An iPad is a great resource for school counselors to be connected and to connect with your
students. In today’s world of iPads, iPods, and iPhones, school counselors need to be able
to say I am connected. This session will provide examples of iPad aps that can be used in
the classroom, with individual students, and much more.

What Does it Mean to Be Career Ready?

What does it mean to be career ready in addition to college ready? National Career Readiness Certificate is an indicator for all students regardless of plans after high school. Come
learn about the implementation of the newest component of the SD Dept. of Ed College/
Career Readiness indicator system.
Anti-Bullying
Jared Richter, Master Sergeant with the SD National Guard—Spruce Room
This anti-bullying presentation was developed by a team of researchers from Harvard University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. With statistics of 60-67% of students in
grades 10-12 reporting that bullying is a problem in their school and/or that they have witnessed bullying, 84-85% of the students who heard the presentation said they received
useful strategies and ideas for what to do when they are bullied, or if they witness bullying.
This presentation will show what the curriculum can offer high school students in your
school.
Essentials for Teaching Gifted Students
Toril Sanford – Lucky Room
One essential aspect of counseling is recognizing client’s individual differences,
whether it is cultural, intellectual, or development. Within this presentation, attendees
will learn the importance of differentiated education for gifted students and important
techniques for dealing with this population in the classroom and as clients.
Embracing, Editing, Excelling
Kristen Konechne, Ashley Werning, and Janel Magnus: Elementary School Counseling

In this share session , we will present on the most important aspect of elementary
counseling, Embracing our students as individuals! We will then share how we Edit
their lives with some of our favorite ideas for classroom guidance and how each of
these ideas helps our students to Excel in the personal/social, academic, and career
aspects of their lives!
Going Beyond the Tip of the Iceberg: ACT Engage and ACT Profile

Just like icebergs, there is so much under the surface of a student that we don’t know
about. This session will describe two tools that can help you discover more about your
student. ACT Engage is a tool for educators at all levels, grades 6 to college, to
improve graduation rates and directly reach students whose personal challenges go
unreported in standardized academic tests. ACT Profile is a free online tool that offers
students the powerful, personalized insights they need to make smarter decisions
about their next steps after high school.

Ethical and Legal Considerations Related to Opening a Private Practice

If you are an LPC, you may have entertained the idea of opening a private practice but
aren’t really sure where to start. This session will focus on some of the ethical and
legal considerations to opening a private practice insuring that you not only provide
high quality services for your clients but that you safeguard yourself in the process.
Collecting Data the Fast, Easy and Efficient Way
Amy Cook and Lara Langelett – Swarm Room
With data collection, professional school counselor can advocate for students, specific
programs, and the need for a counselor. This presentation will discuss aspects of data
collection, develop surveys using cell phone polling, and provide the audience with
resources for individual, group, and classroom guidance counseling.
Elementary Guidance Share Session
Jeff Heavlin, MA NCC – Canyon Room
Elementary level counselors are invited to bring their favorite guidance lessons to share with
the group. Topics include (but not limited to): career exploration, conflict resolution, social
skills, and communication. An opportunity to learn from other dedicated professional school
counselors.
Engaging College Students in Sexual Violence Prevention

Training Memory: Understanding Long-Term Potential
Paul Davies, USD Graduate Student —Oak Room
Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) has become a widely studied phenomenon among neuroscientists. LTP is an enhancement in signal transmission between two neurons when they are
stimulated synchronously. This is believed to be a major underlier of learning and memory.
The process of LTP involves a physical change in synaptic strength through an increase in
receptor sites in the post-synaptic neuron. This increase may cause the brain to undergo
certain mental processes faster and recall past events in a given manner. The implications
of LTP may have effects on many mental health issues such as PTSD and OCD.
Understanding this phenomenon could help us comprehend patterns of
human behavior.

Relaxation: Preparing Yourself for the Performance

Meditation and Reiki, a Japanese energy therapy, have been used for hundreds of years to balance the body and reduce stress. This session will explore application within group therapy settings, as well as individual counseling. 5 meditation techniques will be taught through interactive

Research and outcomes validate the Support Group Approach (SGA) to bullying with the

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SDCA CONFERENCE:
Q. Who chooses the speakers and topics for the preconference workshops?
A. The topics and speakers are chosen by the Area of Specialty sponsoring the workshop. If you have ideas for presenters or topics, please share them directly with
the leadership of the area of specialty to which you belong.
Q. Why don’t we have more vendors with products to sell in the exhibit area?
A. Each year several different book vendors are asked to exhibit. Most vendors do
not find our conference large enough to make it financially feasible to ship product
to the conference site.
Q. How are the content sessions that are presented by members chosen?
A. Members submit their proposal via the Call for Programs form which is sent via
email to all current members and available on our association web site. The proposals go directly to the SDCA Education Chair. The Education Chair uses a blind
review process to select the programs. The sessions are then slotted taking into
consideration length and care is taken to try to keep programs that would appeal to
a like audience in separate time slots. Sessions need to meet the NBCC and SD l
licensure board specifications to fulfill continuing education requirements.
Q. Some years there are more programs related to school than agency or visa versa or few
programs related to a particular topic of interest. Why does the balance seem inconsistent?
A. All programs submitted are reviewed. Most years all programs submitted are accepted and presented. If you would like to see a program on a particular topic,
SDCA would encourage you to solicit someone with expertise in that area to present, to discuss your request with your Area of Specialty leaders, or better yet to
submit to present yourself.
Q. There are so many sessions and my time is packed from when I arrive until I leave. Why
not put more break time and down time into the schedule?
A. Because many participants count on the CEU’s they earn at conference, it warrants
that we provide the maximum amount of programming time will allow. Participants
are free to pick and choose what they would like to attend and plan for their personal down time at their own discretion.
