The week of homecoming was
filled with such exciting events.
From spirit week to pep rally to
the homecoming game itself. It
was a week where students were
able to participate in fun events.
Spirit Week
The week of Tuesday the 14th
through Friday the 17th,
students were able to participate
in spirit week. The categories
began Tuesday with pajama day
and progressed on throughout
the week including disney/
superhero day, twin day and
then drawing to a close on
Friday with red and blue day.
The common favorite, for
students, was disney/superhero
day. Students went full out and
filled the halls with their unique
and creative costumes.
Tessa Canales believed that
though superhero day was cool,
“my favorite was red and blue
day.” The halls were filled with not only students,
but teachers as well showing off their school spirit.

And every now and then a hyped cheerleader
or football player could be spotted in their
uniforms, excited for the upcoming game.
Pep Rally
A parade, pie in the face, a funny dance that
featured the varsity cheerleaders and senior
football players, and an ending bonfire was
what many students’ Thursday night
consisted of. Pie in the face, seemed to be
among one of the favorites of students. “It’s
always cool because
the students get to

“My favorite part of
pep rally was the
dance, watching

defiantly the best.
The whole thing was
such a fun time. It’s
something I’ll always
remember,” was said
by senior Paul Nassif.
The Game
With the win of the homecoming game
against Skaneateles, the week came to a
perfect ending.

New Hartford Welcomes Mrs. Canale!
Zhane’ McKnight
Mrs. Canale was excited when she first came to New Hartford. “I am teaching anatomy and physiology this year and look forward to a lot
of fun labs and activities.”
“Even though its only been a few weeks, we feel like we’ve known her forever. She fits right into our department. She’s extremely dedicated
to her position and is passionate about what she teaches,” commented Mrs. Gordon, another science teacher.
Meaghen Gape, an Anatomy and Physiology student in Mrs. Canale’s class, said that, “She is very forward thinking and likes technology,
and that makes it easier to understand.”
For example, Mrs. Canale uses an automatic grading app where a picture of a test or quiz is taken, and the grade is immediately given.
This seems to be in favor with her classes.
“It works well with the way I think,” Gape explains.
Before going into teaching, Mrs. Canale was a research scientist.
“She was a researcher at Bristol-Meyers Squibb in Syracuse. She incorporates what she did as a researcher into her teaching. Students can
then relate what they are learning to real life situations,” Mrs. Gordon said.
She has been teaching since August 2011. Mrs. Canale decided to come to New Hartford because her husband works in New Hartford,
and she is familiar with area, having attended Hamilton College.
In addition to teaching here at New Hartford, Mrs. Canale has taught at Herkimer County Community College, Mohawk Valley
Community College and Baldwinsville Junior and Senior high school for Chemistry and Biology courses.
“New Hartford is a much smaller district and the class sizes are smaller. Also, my previous school did not have an open lunch which I think
is a great perk to being a student here.”
In her spare time, Mrs. Canale likes to spend time outdoors with her 20 month old son, Zachary, and her two dogs, Eddie and Sylvia.
After she retires, she would like to travel and spend time with her loved ones.
“Mrs. Canale is extremely personable and kind to all who meet her. We are fortunate to have her here at New Hartford,” Mrs. Gordon
says.

To Brazil and Back Again: Discovering Jen Liver Freitas

began to clutter in my mind. There was no
time to be distracted, however, I
was on a case--a case to find a
girl.
As I kicked the school’s
front doors with a force that
only the manliest of men can
achieve, a million thoughts
were racing through my mind,
“Who was this ‘Jen’?”, “How
can I find her?”, and “Why is
the Big Bang Theory still on
the air?”.
I thought I would start my
search where the school’s lowlifes roam, a place where
people will give out key
information for a little peace
and quiet--the library. I looked
around the shadows of the
room for my usual informant,
Marcus Corasanti, and deep in

It was only second block and I
hadn’t gotten much information on
Jen. I decided to take a trip down
to the music wing to confide in
Jen’s current host brother, Ian
Wallace. The wing was booming,
the horns and the strings were

stuck in the middle of it all. It
wasn’t till I entered the band room

answers I needed. “What can you tell
me about Jen ?” I asked, he looked nervous
“She’s capable, and can be ver y
independent” he was a little jittery, but
appeared sincere, “How is it living with
her?” I inquired. As he responded his eyes
began to glisten “It’s nice” he stated “I
grew up with a multiple older siblings and
now that they’re gone it’s nice have
someone else in the house with me”. Cute.
I could take the time to ponder over
the loving nature of exchange sibling
bonds, but my business was still unfinished
as I’ve yet to speak with the exchange
student herself.
Finally I spotted her at
lunch...the following week. I began to
realize My detective abilities may not go
beyond being able to form witty metaphors
on the fly. Nevertheless I found the girl I was
looking for and the only thing standing in my
way was a stray apple, rolling ferociously across
the hall as if it were trying to escape from the
lunch bag that it had fallen from.
I finally approached after hurdling the
runaway apple and realized the destination was
worth the Journey. Now to get the crucial
information I needed
I asked what her hobbies were and what it
is she likes to do in her free time, “In Brazil I
do a lot of running and participate in a lot of
physical exercise.” alluding to the fact that she
may not be doing so much here in the states.
It’s nice to see people embracing the American
lifestyle no matter where they’re from.
But how was she adjusting to New
Hartford? she hesitated but then began to
smile, “It’s different, but good. Everything looks
different here then it does in Brazil.
Especially the homes, we don’t have
homes like you have here.”
A good answer but I wasn’t done yet,
I had one final question for the brazilian
exchange student, what it was, if anything,
she missed about her home. “Hmm” she
thought “The Personality” I asked her to
elaborate “People are much more open in
Brazil, everyone will talk about everything.
I definitely miss that.” Spot on, Jen, spot
on.
Jen herself certainly holds the
qualities of her home country as well, she
is both welcoming and warm, and in turn
should receive these qualities from us as
Americans. So if you are vigilant enough
to find her in the hall, make sure to say
hello.

Abercrombie &
Fitch Questionable
Hiring Habits Send
Them Back to
Court
Carley Bartolotti
Abercrombie has made their
discriminative "Look Policy" a well
known trade mark of their company.
CEO Mike Jefferies, according to
msnbc.com, commented on A&F's
intended market: "We go after the
attractive, all-American kid with a great
attitude and lots of friends. A lot of
people don't belong, and they can't
belong. Are we exclusionary?
Absolutely. These companies that
are in trouble are trying to target
everybody: young, old, fat, skinny."
The irony of this statement is that
Abercrombie itself is now the one "in
trouble".Next term, the Supreme
Court will hear a case concerning
the “look policy” of Abercrombie &
Fitch.
Samantha Elauf applied in 2008 for a
sales job at Abercrombie & Fitch.
According to NBC, she wore a head
scarf, commonly called a hijab, a part
of her normal attire, to the interview.
Part of the interviewing process at A&F
is to give the aspiring employees a
“style score,” because they are seen
not only as workers, but as “models”
too.
Her style scored her a 2, which was a
high enough score for her to be hired,
but because of her head scarf, the
district manager lowered it to a 1,
which was low enough to disqualify her
from being hired at all.
function of the position and ultimately
damages the brand.”
The assistant manager questioned the
supervisor about whether or not Elauf’s
head scarf was suitable dress for an A&F
worker. The supervisor said that it was not
part of the stores “Look Policy”, and
Samantha Elauf was denied the job.
Abercrombie even went to the extent of
questioning Elauf’s sincerity of her
religious belief, because some Muslim
women do not wear head scarves, and
others wear it for cultural reasons, rather
than religious.
Elauf was represented by the federal Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission, and
sued under the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting
employment discrimination.
This case was not the first of its kind for
Abercrombie & Fitch. In 2013,
Abercrombie was involved in two cases
where young Muslim women were fired
or refused a job altogether because of
their hijabs.
Abercrombie lost at first, but then appeals
were made, arguing that Elauf could not
claim religious discrimination, because she The EEOC reported that Abercrombie
had not stated that she wore the hijab for was ruled liable for religious
discrimination recently, and has agreed
to pay $71,000 and change its their
religious accommodation policies to
settle two separate discriminative cases.
These cases have caused a major
decline in sales. Marissa Spina says that

religious reasons. Elauf was never formally
told that the reason she was not hired was
because of her hijab, even though
Abercrombie employees assumed her
reason for wearing it was religious.
The majority of previous Abercrombie &
Fitch consumers believe that this
behavior is unacceptable. Maryrose
Mauro stated “No girl or boy should be
denied a job for religious reasons, no
matter the race or customs. It’s ridiculous
that attractiveness and clothing are used
to qualify employees and can make or
break an interview”
The EEOC’s response to this was “Job
applicants cannot be expected to request
an accommodation when they are unaware
that a conflict exists”, as they argued this
put an impossible burden on employees.

OPINION
What is keeping this protest from ending in disaster like the
Tiananmen Protests of 1989? Fenton adds, “Hong Kong is the
financial capital of Asia, it had a Democratic government for 99
years. Over 30 million people visit Hong Kong every year, billions
of foreign investment has been injected into China since 1989.
The Chinese have a history of not backing down or giving in to
global pressure. However, Hong Kong is one of the most popular
global cities in the world, I don't think China can risk the damage
that would come financially if they crack down on the Hong Kong
protesters, as they did in Beijing in 1989.”
In an interesting turn of events, on October 3rd the Hong Kong
protesters were attacked, not by government forces, but rather by
counter-protesters in Mong Kokand. CNN reports that within a
week of protesting, “more than 150 people have been injured, and
12 were in a hospital as of 2 p.m. Saturday.” (As of October 4th).
Just exactly who or what prompted these attacks created suspicion
resulting in a refusal by the protestors to talk to the police after the
violence. The police thereafter gave the demonstrators a deadline
to clear the entranceways to the government building and the
schools that had been congested by the crowds of protesters.
The demonstrators set up barricades to which blocked traffic for
two weeks. Hong Kong police took down the barriers, only to have
them built back up again. Talks between pro-democracy protesters
and government officials were scheduled for October 10th but the
government cancelled the negotiations. According to BBC, to keep
the protest alive, protesters stuck post-it notes all over the walls of
Hong Kong.
I am personally rooting for the protesters. They have been
peacefully protesting against one of the strictest and most powerful
governments in the world. This is a right often taken for granted in
America and it took great courage for these people to stand up for
their rights, particularly with the governments past history of
dealing harshly with protesters. The transition that began in 1997
has been a fragile and tenuous arrangement, balancing the
interests of two very different economic and political systems.
Only time will tell whether the free market and democratic ideals
of Hong kong will work to influence the communist Chinese
government or if Hong Kong will ultimately be transformed and
absorbed into the chinese Communist collective.

But how do you
determine if
something is of “high
moral standards”?
bloog.iese.com
How do you determine if a person has
done something acceptable?
Desirable?
How do you?
The Catholics believe in seven key
virtues. Chastity, temperance, charity,
diligence, patience, kindness, and
humility. I certainly believe that these hold
high to the improvement of showing high
moral standards. I, however, am not a
particularly patient person. By no means
am I hot tempered. However, people will
never cease to “light my fuse”, friends and
family included.
But just because I don’t always exhibit
some of these virtues, does that mean I
am not a virtuous person? I don’t think so.
In order to classify a person as virtuous or
wicked I feel we should look at the big
picture. Did they spend all of their life
voluntarily in a drug cartel murdering and
killing? Did they volunteer all of their time
helping orphans in a
third world country?
Did they live an
ordinary life, making
ordinary mistakes? I’m
sure most of us aren’t
in a drug cartel and I’m
sure not all of us
volunteer our time in
third world countries.
We’re all human. There’s no doubt about
that. We all make mistakes. We make
decisions we wish we could take back.
That’s life. I believe as long as we choose
to go down the right road, even with a few
bumps and potholes, we all have the
ability to be good, virtuous people. Don’t
let what you’ve done dictate who you can
be.
So what do you believe makes you a
virtuous person?

QUES TIO N O F TH E WEEK
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPIRIT WEEK DAY?
By Emily Steates
TUESDAY: PAJAMA DAY
Pajama day was a popular favorite among New Hartford students. Seniors Dana DelGenio and
Mallory Max, as well as Junior Mady Petel, agreed that pajama day was the best day because it was
an excuse to dress comfortably during the school day. Mady explains, “I love PJ day because its
comfortable and requires little to no effort.” Some students exhibited more creative ideas by
rejecting traditional pajamas. A few groups of friends wore fun footsie pajamas or pajamas that
resembled animals, while other students seemingly trekked to school in the same thing they wore to
bed the night before. Either way students chose to attack the day, Tuesday was a fun, relaxing day to
start off this exciting week.
WEDNESDAY: SUPERHERO/DISNEY DAY
Wednesday was definitely the boldest day of Spirit Week. Classic disney characters
such as Snow White, Minnie Mouse, and Boo from Monsters Inc. clashed with an
assortment of superheroes, including Batman, Captain America, Superman, and even
Captain Underpants. Some students even combined the two days, representing more
than one character at once. Superhero/disney day was especially appreciated by the
girl’s soccer team, who decided to dress up together as superheroes and sidekicks.
Lauren Vedete, a senior, commented, “I really enjoyed superhero day because it was
the same day as our ‘senior night’ for soccer. The older girls dressed up as superheroes
and the younger girls were the sidekicks. It was really fun to dress up with my team.”
Conversely, senior Jessie Rust enjoyed the disney aspect of the day: “Disney day was
really fun because it gave me an opportunity to dress up like a princess.”
THURSDAY: TWIN DAY
Thursday was the perfect day to share spirit with friends. On twin
day, friends dressed similarly to resemble identical twins. While
most students merely wore matching clothes, a few students took
twin day to the next level. One daring pair of twins, seniors Adam
Zogby and Peter Cougan, even wore matching cow suits.
FRIDAY:
RED AND BLUE DAY
Red and Blue day truly put the
“spirit” in spirit week. Students could
be seen showing off their school colors
in every way possible. Many proudly
wore jackets, hair bows, hats, and
more in our traditional Spartan colors.
This classic day was the perfect way to
end an exciting week full of New
Hartford pride and support our
football team in their homecoming
game.

Cross country is more than running; it is a very difficult sport but at the same time rewarding

Nicole Falvo, a New Hartford senior and captain who runs cross country, has been on the team for six years now. She started
running at age 11. Nicole says she knew she would always be a runner ever since she ran the Boilermaker kids run and knew that long
distance was her specialty. Nicole says that she runs because it’s a way to escape from the struggles of life and be with the team but also to
stay in shape. Nicole Falvo says, “my favorite part of cross country is how well the team bonds. The girls on the team always make me smile!
The cross country team is also unique. This is because of the girls on the team everyone of them is different and that they bring such great
qualities to the team. All of them are welcoming to others and devoted cross country runners. I wish them luck with their season!” Nicole
advises the underclassmen that all they have to do is “keep their heads up and never give up!”
Juliet Hull, a New Hartford junior, runs cross country. She has been on the team for four years now. The reason she joined cross
country was because “all of her friends did it and she wanted to try.” Another topic Juliet talked about was the team and how the second she
joined she was welcomed and how easily she was accepted. She likes “how everyone is so kind and encouraging to one another during
practice and meets we constantly push one another.” She loves the team. She describes it as a family. She says, “we are always together and
we have one another’s back for everything. Juliet recently won the Whitesboro Cross Country Invitational. It was a 3.1 mile race she ran it in

the the pouring rain. The New Hartford Varsity Cross Country team also placed 2nd in the invitational.
Brittany Masi, a New Hartford sophomore, has been running cross country for four years. She started running because of her
mom who is also a runner. Brittany ran and trained for her first Boilermaker and soon after the race she knew she would always be a runner.
Because running for her is a way to escape all her problems and clear her mind. Brittany describes the cross country team as “a second
family.” She says, “we are all so close to one another; there is not one day I go without seeing one of my teammates. We make so many
memories over the season”.” Brittany says joining the cross country team you not only stay in shape and make memories, but there are so
many people you meet and they all have great qualities and that the pasta parties are always so much fun before our big Saturday
invitationals. She explains that “even when the seniors leave for college they always come back to see us even the ones who graduated two to
three years ago and thats always so exciting to see they still remember you and that they come to cheer you on and watch you race.” Brittany
also says that people need to understand you could be in the best shape but you yourself may not be, meaning you doubt yourself because
running is definitely a mental sport. “You can't think negatively or else you will do bad but if you prepare yourself and think about the course
or meet ahead of time then you will do great,” she says.

became, 100 meter backstroke, 50 and 100 meter freestyle
Because of her hard work and dedication to swimming Falvo broke
her first school record when she was in eighth grade. Falvo says, “I
loved the feeling and this inspired me to want to break as many
records as I could.”
By the time that Kristen Falvo had graduated she held the records
for the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 and 100
freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 100 backstroke!
As Falvo grew up her father emphasized the importance in being
safe in and around water. At age seven, Falvo started competitively
swimming.
Falvo’s record still stands here at the New Hartford Senior High, in
the 100 freestyle! “It was amazing and so exciting!!! After 26 years,
I still hold the school record!” Falvo conveys.
Falvo says, “I joined the Girls' Varsity Swim team in eighth grade. I
started to win a few events, gained confidence and learned I loved
to compete. I wanted to be the best and worked really hard! It was
a huge sacrifice and commitment, but I had found my niche and I
enjoyed every minute of it!”
After high school Falvo attended Colgate University, were she
swam for four years. When she graduated she held ten records!
Falvo swam five days a week for two hours a day. Even during
vacations she would continue to swim, sometimes even doubling up
on sessions. Falvo says that perseverance through “hard sets, a hard
race,” or when she was sick before a championship meet, and
commitment despite the countless hours in a pool for several days a
week, and during the long car rides to achieve her own personal
goals were some key components to her success.
Continuing her legacy as a swimmer, Falvo’s daughter Alexis is also
a swimmer. Currently Alexis Falvo attends Perry Junior High and
swims on the Girls Varsity Swim Team.
Like her mother Alexis also spends a lot of her time in a pool. She
also competes with a group of swimmers called the Cudas, in her
“off-season.”
Falvo says, “My parents were truly my inspiration when swimming
and were my biggest cheerleaders, and sacrificed so much of their
time so I could pursue a sport that I loved. They never put any
pressure on me and I attribute my success to the fact that I had no
parental pressure.”
Falvo started off swimming the 200 IM and the 100 meter
backstroke. As Falvo became more exposed to a greater variety of
events, and her experience in swimming grew, she discovered that
she loved sprinting events. Her events soon became the 50 and 100
“Swimming is a lot different today and it is extremely
competitive and intense when you are at an elite level. I am
fortunate that Alexis loves the sport of swimming and is a
tenacious competitor. I share some of my experiences and
strategies with her, but my greatest joy is just watching her
compete! I always tell her her to have fun while doing the sport,
and to work hard and stay mentally tough if she wants to
achieve her goals. She is well aware of my longstanding
remaining record and I'm quite sure she is motivated by it and I
know she is capable of breaking it. That would be really neat!”

SPORTS
I have a game tonight! What should I eat?
Madison O’Toole Wake Up Call: 6am
Breakfast: 6:30 am
Lunch 10:40 am
Sports Practice: 3pm - 5pm
The typical day for a New Hartford Student
Athlete, and a long day that requires food to fuel active
bodies. There are approximately 30 sports organizations in
the school involving over 400 students throughout the year.
Are we fueling our bodies and our minds enough to excel in
school and sports? Sports nutrition is a specialization
within the field of nutrition that partners closely with the
study of the human body and exercise science.
Cindy Chan Phillips, RD is a dietitian for the New
York Beef Council. Offered sports nutrition advice to
aspiring athletes. Cindy stated there are three principles in
sports, meet your energy needs, hydration and recovery.
The first principle Phillips stated was how to eat to meet
your energy needs. Phillips discussed how much calorie
intake an athlete should eat the day before a game, its
different for everyone based on gender, weight and age.
However the average adult and or teen should eat 1800 to
2200 calories a day and all athletes should try to meet their
calorie intake especially before a game or meet. Cindy also
discussed the type of diet an athlete should follow. It should
be a balanced diet with all five of the food groups (fruit,
veggies, protein, fat and grains) throughout the day.
Phillips also stated “we must meet our energy
needs and try not restrict calorie intake.” This is a big
problem for a growing teen. Teens need food for growth and
energy. Phillips also recommends that athletes should also
eat snacks before a game
whether its crackers,
granola, raisins, fruit,
pretzel and or an energy
bar.
The second principle
discussed was the
importance of hydration.
Athletes should hydrate 2
to 4 hours before an
event. If you don’t hydrate, then during your game or meet
you will hit a wall because you're feeling the effect of
dehydration. Another way you can see if you are
dehydrated is if your urine is light colored your drinking
enough water if its dark-colored; this means you're not
drinking enough water. Water is the best source to hydrate
your body. Gatorade is a source to replenish electrolytes
but is full of sugar, water is definitely better!
The last principle is recovery the Goals of
Recovery Nutrition Include
• Restore fluid and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) lost
in sweat; weigh before and after exercise and replenish
what was lost
• Replace muscle fuel (carbohydrate) utilized during
practice
• Provide protein to aid in repair of damaged muscle tissue
and to stimulate development of new tissue
• Begin nutrition recovery with a snack or meal within 15-60
minutes following practice or competition
There are also recovery snacks you should have after your
game or meet which include
•
Gram cracker with peanut butter
•
Chocolate milk - protein from milk and
carbohydrates from the chocolate
•
Sports drink and a sports bar
•
Smoothie made with yogurt and bananas and
frozen berries
Ms.Kelly Nugent, the former NH Varsity Boys
Cross Country Coach, feels strongly about sports nutrition.
Nugent states, “fueling for a race requires balancing two
conflicting interests: on the one hand, our bodies need fuel,
but on the other, our stomachs halt the digestive process

once we warm up and blood is directed away from the digestive system. Thus, we have to be careful about how and
when we are providing that much-needed energy.”
Katie Wiater a New Hartford Senior plays Tennis says “that she does not follow a regular diet or meal plan she will
just eat what ever during the season”.
Ms.Nugent goes on to say all runners who push themselves to go as fast as they can know that eating the wrong
food or eating anything too close to a race can result in "digestive distress," otherwise known as vomiting or diarrhea. Most
runners need to eat between 2 and 4 hours before a race. Generally, the longer the race, the closer to race time one needs to
eat. In the 24-48 hours leading up to the race, runners must nourish themselves well and be careful not to go into a calorie
deficit, because this final meal cannot be very heavy. The best "final meal" varies from person to person depending on their
genetic make-up and what they are accustomed to, but the meal should include mostly carbohydrates with some fat and
protein. Common meals include toast or a bagel with peanut or
other nut butters, oatmeal, a simple turkey sandwich, bananas,
Cliff bars, etc. To avoid digestive distress, most people need to
avoid dairy or high-fiber foods at this meal. Runners should be
careful with the kinds of energy bars and snacks they eat,
because some are very high in sugar or even corn syrup, and
they will not give a person the kind of slow-burning, stable energy
they need.
Lauren Vedete a New Hartford Senior who plays Soccer “says
that she finds it difficult to eat and or maintain a healthy diet.
Because there are always so many temptations. But the night
before a big game she loads up on pasta”!

Katie and Arianna were born on January 26th. Katie
was born exactly one minute earlier than Arianna. From the

New Hartford High School is undoubtedly a beautiful and
aesthetically appealing school, however, one can always strive to better,
New Hartford’s Ecology Club strives to do just.
“It just came upon us [the ecology club council]” stated Terrin
Munawet, Ecology Club Vice President, “We were just brainstorming
ideas for what we wanted to do as a project for the year and popped into
our heads--a school garden!”
A little ambitious I thought to myself, who has the time and
resources to tackle such an amazing feat? “Well, we do” responded the
devilishly handsome and president of Ecology Club, Aidan Halpin, “It’s
really quite simple, we have a dedicated and completely sane group of
students that are really passionate about the project and only want to see
it so well.”
Sure, that’s all well and good, but dedication alone can’t build you a
garden, Terrin jolted in, “Obviously we have to look at the project
realistically, we know it won’t just appear if we believe hard enough. We
have already started networking with science teachers, getting to know
how they would be able to use the school and with others who have gone
through the process of making school gardens before in order to make
the process as efficient as we possibly can.”
They think they’ve cornered me, well not so fast, we’ll just see how
an average student feels about this ludicrous idea. I perused the school
for some time before finally finding a real average joe, Sean Saltzgaber. I
began my line of questioning immediately.
“How do you feel about Ecology Club’s proposal for a school
garden?” he looked at me for a second, “I think it’s a great idea, see” he
exclaimed “That would most definitely brighten of the school.” Ah but
wait, you haven’t heard the whole story “What if you had to help
volunteer to work and set up the garden” I asked with a sly smile on my
face. “Who wouldn’t want to work on a garden, see. I always wanted to
learn how to protect my mother’s sweet azaleas from the outside world, I
may finally learn how.” Curse you Sean, and your mother’s putrid
azaleas.
I’m out of carrots, I’m out of sticks...I just can seem to find any
flaws in the Ecology Club’s proposal--it’s impeccable.
A project that builds character, adds to curriculum of
courses at the school, and establishes ecological and
natural beauty to the school is surely the best a
school’s club has had in years, and has left this
journalist very impressed.

Movie Review
Morgan Bennett
In honor of the spookiest time of the year, this issue i’ll be critiquing
World War Z. World War Z was initially a book, but in June 2013
the movie adaptation hit theaters.
I have not read the book, but I love the movie (and yes, I know how
awful that sounds to someone who has read the book). I’ve seen it
dozens of times. This means I still appreciate the story line but have
spotted the little filming errors as well. The movie is about Gerry Lane and his family during the zombie
apocalypse. Gerry and his family live in philadelphia and find
themselves in a traffic jam when the zombies attack. they manage to
make it to newark and are airlifted out to an aircraft carrier. Gerry
then is assigned to go on a mission to find the first patient and find
out what caused the virus. he flies to South Korea, Israel, and then
crash lands in wales at a research facility. there, Gerry and the
scientists figure out a way to immune themselves from zombie
attacks.
Although the plot was good and fast paced, It is very unlikely that
Gerry would have lived through the adventure. He survived a car

crash, a plane crash, a spike through his stomach, a disease that
happened to be curable, and a whole lot of zombies.
The only reason he lived was because of; the abandoned RV that
happened to have a loaded gun in it, the fact that they never hit
traffic on the way to Newark, the Latin family, little Tommy shot the
zombie trying to bite him, a contact in the UN, the Israeli soldier, a
research facility, and a vaccine for a fatal disease.
Overall, I think it is a good movie. It is certainly better if you only

watch it once before you start to analyze it and become sceptic (like
i did) And if you are not faint of heart, i recommend watching the
unrated version. It has a little more gore than the rated version and
more shocking zombie attacks.

Time Fillers
Elizabeth D. Lemire
Dear Readers,
These books are all as the headline suggests, time fillers. They are fun and easy to read. For those of you that are sick of reading
and having to interpret every meaning of every single line in the article, this selection is perfect for you! If you have already read them
then they are also fun to re-read and enjoy again!
1.
The Maze Runner By: James Dashner
Protagonist Thomas wakes up from what seems to be a long nap, only to find himself in a place that he has
never seen before surrounded by a group of boys that he has never met. The only memory he has is his
name. He soon learns that every week supplies are delivered, and every month another boy enters the maze.
They don’t know who sends them their supplies or the boys, all they know is that it just happens. The book
The Maze Runner is about a group of boys who are fighting for survival while trapped inside a giant maze, that
changes every night. Who put them in the maze? How do they get out?
2.The Percy Jackson Series By: Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan provides a spin off of ancient Greek and Roman mythology as he depicts the life of main
protagonist Percy Jackson. Percy had always been a “weird” kid. He had been kicked out of seven schools,
trouble following him wherever he moved. As trouble followed Percy throughout his life, when will he find out
who he really is? Who are his friends and who are his enemies? Find out in Percy Jackson and the Lightning
Thief, the first book in the series! (This is a multiple series story. Percy Jackson and the Olympians covers Greek
Mythology, and the continuation of the story, The Heroes of Olympus is a
combination of Roman and Greek mythology. The characters are the same, but
the reading level increases.)
3.Room By: Emma Donoghue
This book follows the life of a little five year old boy living in a shed with his college-aged mother. Trapped
in the shed with no where to go, the mother creates a new world for the boy, in which the “outside” world
does not exist. The shed is the only world that the little boy knows. The story is told in the point of view of
the little boy, so everything that he perceives is different from what we as the
reader know is fact. This book provides an unlikely point of view on the
world, and will make you appreciate what usually is taken for granted.
Happy Reading!

ALTERNATIVE ROCK MUSIC
Alternative Artists To Check Out
Wikipedia’s definition: Alternative rock (also called alternative
music, alt rock or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music
that emerged from the independent music underground of the
1980s and became widely popular by the 1990s. The 'alternative'
definition refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock
music, expressed primarily in a distorted guitar sound,
transgressive lyrics and generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude.
My definition: An outlet for diverse musical styles centered
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Artctic Monkeys
Sublime

around a unified passion for that one-of-a-kind rock sound. The
genre tests all boundaries, differentiating itself from mainstream
rock music. Although the term “rock” does not exactly strike us
as heartwarming and compassionate, alternative artists
frequently write and perform songs with sentiment and meaning,
reflecting on their own understanding of the world, love, and
life. Others take a more intransigent approach, rejecting popular
opinion and preaching their own. Similar to Indie music,
alternative rock varies widely, and takes a D.I.Y, independent
approach on music.

Word To The
Wise
Attitude
\ˈa-təә-ˌtüd, -ˌtyüd\
Mallory Max
: the way you think and feel about
someone or something
Attitude
Waking up late, spilling your
coffee, having a bad hair day
or even getting stopped at a
red light when you're in a rush
can ruin your whole day. The
way you treat the “horrible”
things is in your control. Although it is not easy to get up and walk
away when these things happen, think on the bright side of things,
it could be much worse. Your attitude is everything, if you let
things get on your nerves too easily your life will seem as if its a
series of unfortunate events. Looking at the bright side of things
helps as well as thinking about how grateful you are to have a car,
be able to pay for coffee, or even waking up late - on the bright
side of waking up late was that you got more sleep than you
would’ve initially had. Thinking that your whole day is ruined
because of certain events should not determine the rest of day or
week. Looking back on it, it will be funny, so in the spur of the
moment, think about your reaction and put it into context. Things
that stubble upon us are just bumps in the road. Some bigger than
others, but in the end it'll be something less significant than you
once thought it to be. Although frustrating, everything seems to
come into one’s path a certain reason, and everything works out no
matter what. On a literal standpoint, you will get to your
destination whether late or early, you will be able to get cleaned
up, you can wear a hat or put your hair up, and the day will have
to end and everything will be okay the next day, but why waste a
day of being miserable when there’s a hundred other reasons to be
happy. In the end, your attitude will
not only bring you happiness but
success as well, and what could be
better than a confident, happy,
driven, and successful person. Look
at different perspectives when you
think there are hundreds of things
going wrong instead of right.
: a feeling or way of thinking that affects
a person's behavior
: a way of thinking and behaving that
people regard as unfriendly, rude, etc.
“For success, attitude is equally as
important as ability.”
- Walter Scott
“You cannot control what happens to you, but you
can control your attitude toward what happens to
you, and in that, you will be mastering change
rather than allowing it to master you.”
-Brian Tracy
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big
difference.”

Genevieve: The Unrequited Dalliance
of A Young Girl
The dawning light filters through my
window pane.
It is your love, uneven and broken.
The air is still and my pulse has fled from my fingertips.
I tremble in my abandon, cold in my passion.
It pains and I pain.
Still, you are warm.
My poor aching lips suffer the withdrawal
of your beloved affection.
Return those lips to mine
and my heart is a sparrow soaring up to God.
If you place your hand upon my ashen cheek ,
You can catch the tears that fall with my wilting breath.
And such bitter breath from
such a bitter child, I know.
Forsake me, but oh, how my very
soul burns with a love unsurmounted by even
the unluckiest of lovers.
And in love,
in sweet, unmerciful love,
I am unafraid.
Sweet angel, fear not, as I am too passionate
a child and I have the warmth of a dear dagger between my breasts
to keep me company in
this mercy.
It is said that these violent delights have violent ends.
And how.

How It Feels To Be
Diabetic Me
Zhane’ McKnight
The prick of needle barely has me
flinching. The calluses protect me from
that in a way. The blood wells up and I
feed it into the strip which is connected to
the meter. I count down with the meter.
5...4...3...2...1…
Great. I’m high. Again. Which means
the next couple of hours will be spent with
headaches, nausea and extreme thirst. Yay.
But it’s normal for me.
I always try not to let my diabetes
define me. But everytime when I’m
presented with the typical describe yourself
question, I always write the words, “Type I
Diabetic.”
Not that I don’t mind. In fact, I rather
people know about it, instead of making
assumptions. There’s nothing more
annoying than a diabetic cliche, like “are
you supposed to eat that? It has sugar in
it!”
Though it’s important not to eat a lot
of sugar, diabetics can eat it. It only means
that we’ll have to take a little more insulin
later, which is fine. It makes parties a lot
more fun to be able to participate fully.
I’ve had this disease since I was 14
months old. In a weird way, it’s lucky that I
didn’t get it in my childhood years, like a
lot of my friends have. I’ve had 16 years to
adjust to this disease. Some people have
only had two months, give or take.
I went through many stages. When I
was younger, I used to come home from
school, crying because I wasn’t normal.
I’ve felt sadness, anger, and now on the
brink of adulthood, I feel warily resigned.
To be completely honest, having
diabetes is the worst. I’m almost jealous of
Type II Diabetics; their diabetes is
managed with diet and exercise. No
pumps for them. But I can only be grateful
that it’s not cancer or something else.
Not to say that there aren’t risks with
having diabetes. Blindness, kidney failure,
heart disease, nerve failure and other
things are long term effects of diabetes if
it gets out of control. And with the way
I’m having high blood sugars all the time,
I worry that I might go blind or have
kidney failure soon.
But it’s so hard to stay on a fixed
schedule. Distractions are the enemy and
can easily cause me to go four, five, six
hours without testing, when in reality
you’re supposed to test every two hours.
There almost seems to be rewarding
benefits with diabetes, which is a weird
thing to say. We diabetics have such a
close-knit community with help and
support every step of the way. There’s a
diabetes camp in every state for ages 8-17.
I know people who have been there every
summer, and then even return as
counselors and volunteers.
I only went last year. I wish I had been
going all my life, but in a way I can, as a
counselor.
The connections made there are
insanely strong. Everyone keeps in touch
with each other, long after camp is over,
and lifetime friendships are made.
Which is why it’s strange to think
about a cure.
Harvard University thinks they may
have a cure for Type I Diabetes, by
undergoing a transplant which would give
human-insulin producing beta cells, the
equivalent of normal functioning beta
cells. Scientists have tested it on mice with
diabetes and it worked. While nothing is
set in stone, it gives me--us-- hope.
Imagine, 1.3 million people cured! It
would be amazing.
But then what would happen?
Would we lose camp? The walk for
diabetes? After all, that’s what we could all
connect to; that we all had diabetes.
Honestly, a lot would change. No
more highs or lows. No more insulin
pumps or syringes. No more fighting with
your insurance company because they
don’t want to pay for test strips.
It would all just… disappear.
Which would be a good thing! It
would be the best thing that could ever
happen.
And that’s why nothing would change.
Diabetics would still be making those
connections with others, getting together
to hang out, and liking each other’s
Facebook posts. Nothing would change
except that we wouldn’t be carrying our
pumps on our belt loops, and carrying
extra purses with our test kits.
But for now, I’m okay with being
diabetic. Would I like a cure? Definitely.
And for now, and probably years to come,
I’m alright with being diabetic me.

Suzy’s Halloween Nightmare
Suzy woke promptly woke to the sound of the front door slamming shut. She rolled over lazily
to look at the time on her clock; it read 3:04 AM. Her brother, Alex, was no longer lying in the bed next
to her. Puzzled, Suzy ripped off her warm covers and quickly scurried out of bed. She walked down the
cold hallway, listening closely for any signs of who the intruder may be.
Suzy silently crept into her parents room and peeked inside. She saw their empty bed, perfectly
made as if no one had slept there at all.
Just then, she heard a piecing scream coming from the basement. Her brother’s voice
resonated through the previously-silent halls. Hearing this, Suzy frantically called her brothers name as
she raced down the stairs.
She screamed, “Alex! Alex are you okay? Alex where are you?”
Alex did not reply, making Suzy even more nervous. When she reached the bottom of the
stairs, however, she stopped calling his name. Her jaw dropped and her muscles froze.
She was staring at a crisp white wall drenched in a thick, recognizable red goo. Blood. Suzy
inhaled the vibrant-red substance and silently backed away in shock.
Overwhelmed with fear, Suzy let out a piercing scream as she started to sprint upstairs

towards the front door. Frantically, she fidgeted with the door handle, but it was locked from the
outside--trapping Suzy in.
Suzy began to panic. She ran to the glass door that was located in the rear of the house only to find that it, too, was locked. Suzy
tugged and pounded at the door; frantically shouting for help.
In her frenzy, Suzy stumbled towards the kitchen. She rummaged through every drawer in the hopes of finding anything that could be
used to break open the glass door.
“I know the hammer is in here. It must be,” she whispered to herself.
Just then, a small noise grabbed Suzy’s attention.
It was the soft beating of a hammer against human skin.
Slowly, Suzy twirled herself around. Facing her was a young man in a well-kept suit. His face was cleanly shaven, and his hair was
perfectly trimmed.
Suzy began to tremble. She could feel her heart beat pulsing throughout her entire body.
After a moment of silence, Suzy stumbled over her words as she asked, “Who, who, are you?”
The man menacingly grinned without replying as he continued to lightly tap the hammer on his palm and inched closer to her.
Suzy suddenly felt her blood turn cold. Her feet froze to the ground. Her thoughts slowed.
When the man saw that she was vulnerable, he pounced on her. Like a slick boa constrictor, he wrapped his arm around her neck and
drew the hammer up to her head.
Suzy softly asked, “What... what are you going to do with me?”
“I’m going to let you join the rest of your family, Suzy,” the man said with a grin.
