A note from the Director
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ:
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to read this special Retreat 2012 Edition of the “Young
Disciples Focus,” a quarterly newsletter of the General Assembly Youth Ministry. Special thanks and
congratulations to the editor of the Young Disciples Focus, Elder Kimberly Ferebee on publishing an
excellent Retreat Edition!
This edition covers a salute to our First lady, Sister Doris Smith. You can also take a look at
advertisement for the newly published book by our visionary General Bishop Alton A. Smith “Church
Protocol.” The focal point this quarter is the General Assembly Biennial Youth Retreat. Included you will
find the program for worship services, biographies of the facilitators, expositors and outlines for the
workshops.

accomplishments and their quest to fulfill the will of God through missions.
The focus thought for this quarter is our theme, “Change Your Mind, Change Your Life”. “And be
not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove
what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”(Romans 12:2) It is important for all disciples
to realize the gravity of becoming more like Christ and less like the operations of this world system. 1
John 2:16, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is
not of the Father, but is of the world.” The longing of this flesh to identify with this world if not checked
can hold us back from becoming what God has called us to be, “Disciples of Christ.” Hebrews 12:1 says, ”
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every
weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before
us,’ As Disciples of Christ it is a must that we work to reflect Christ in the earth!
My love and prayers are for each of you!

Missions Through Medical Ministry
Sister. Alicia Codrington graduated from
Rutgers University with a degree in Biology. She then
entered University of Medicine & Dentistry of New
Jersey, Graduate School of Biomedical Science in
Newark, New Jersey.
In the Fall of 2006, Sister Alicia gave her life to
the Lord at New Life Evangelistic Ministry Church of
Christ, Disciples of Christ, now under the leadership
of Pastor Dee Dee Hayes, launching the birth of
numerous spiritual gifts. In 2007, the Lord led Sister
Alicia to successfully complete the praise dance mime
class at the Raise Him Up Dance School in New York.
While continuing her education, she taught science at The Newark Museum.
In 2008, she graduated from UMDNJ with her a Masters in Biomedical Science.
That same year, Sister Alicia was car jacked outside her home and realized just how
important her ministry is in the Kingdom of God. She thought, “I must be a threat
if the enemy is so determined to kill me”. Sister Alicia then put her education on
hold to focus on God and care for her grandmother as God planned.
The Lord called Sister Alicia into a healing ministry, consisting of dance
ministry and medical missionary. She applied and was accepted into the Medical
School of Americas and St. James Medical School. However, a lack of financial
means, Sister Alicia’s education is currently delayed. She continuously reminds
herself that she is “delayed but not denied,” a quote from her late Pastor Shelia
Johnson. God did not deny her request but he did alter the route.
Sister Alicia was awarded a grant to attend a nursing aide training
certification program at Ace Health Care Training Center. After passing the state
exam, she applied to the Volunteers in Medical Missionary organization and is now
on her way to Peru, this August, to give herself in service to others.
Sister Alicia doesn’t take her gifts for granted, knowing the Lord has placed a
GREAT work within her to care for His people. She loves the Lord with all her
heart and desires to please Him in every aspect of her life. As she continues to “fight
the good fight of faith,” she will joyfully do the work of the Lord. Her goal is to
“dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Amen!

Biographical Synopsis of
Elder Jovita Sheppard
Birthed from a rich gospel tradition, singer/songwriter Jovita “JoWriter”
Sheppard is poised to make a mark all her own.
Raised in a house with three siblings and piles of gospel music, Jovita began
singing at the age of 5, and by her teenage years, had begun to cultivate her gift of
song writing. Even then her focus was on making worship the central part of her
musical experience. Jovita's passionate, reflective lyrics bore evidence of her
maturation. In her mid-teens she was invited to lead praise and worship at Benaiah
Ministries by Apostle RosaLinda Warren and currently Pastored by her eldest brother
Thomas Warren. Jovita faithfully served in ministry and was later ordained an Elder.
Jovita Sheppard is also the founder of JoWriter Productions, an upstart venture
that oversees the creative processes of songwriters, musicians and playwrights. She
and her husband tirelessly serve the local, regional and international areas to provide
an authentic God encounter. The Sheppard’s are envisioned for salvation and
encouragement of souls.
Jovita Sheppard has grown to affect the masses. A voice for the nations, she has
been exalted for such a time as this; to lead the body of Christ into a personal, lasting
relationship with God. She currently serves in full time ministry as the Director of
Worship at Kingdom Church Pastored by Dharius Daniels.
Like Prophet Ezekiel, Jovita Sheppard has more than just a song. she has eaten
the sacred scrolls and the word of the Lord is enscribed in her heart and now stands

On November 5, 1995, she preached her introductory sermon at St. Paul Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ entitled,
“Satan, your permit has expired, your license has been revoked, therefore you must leave the premises” Joshua 6:20, II
Corinthians 10: 3-5. Acknowledging the call on her life, she has taken many biblical courses at Bethel Bible Institute
and the Northeastern District Learning Center of the Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ.
While at St. Paul, the Lord continued to groom her; preparing her for the next level. In doing so, Elder Toya stepped
out on faith with her pastor Apostle Joyce Y. Lemmon as she launched a new ministry. On October 6, 1996, Deliverance
Tabernacle Church of Christ was birthed and so was Toya’s ministry The first minister of Deliverance Tabernacle, she
again was very active. Choir President, Superintendent of Foundational Classes, Administrator, Organizer of DT
Steppers, an armor bearer to her Apostle, Youth Advocate, Praise and Worship leader and van driver. With all of this,
her motivation is purely out of love for God and God’s people. There have been many inspirations in her life. Her
parents, grandparents, Bishop Robert Ewart, Pastor Sharon Pickens, her pastor Apostle Joyce Y. Lemmon, Pastor Ella
Johnson and my fellow ministers here at DT…but her greatest inspiration comes from her relationship with God. He is
her everything!
God gave Toya two wonderful daughters, Nancy Ruth Price and Sharonda Lakeia Taylor. To her they are precious gifts
that hold a special place in her heart.
Her favorite and model scripture is in 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but
be an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity (NIV). Her passion is with the youth. She
tries to mirror her life after this scripture in hopes of inspiring them to follow God while they are young.
This bio is written as a testament to God’s ability to allow you to rise above any form of adversity and triumph in Him.
It shows the sustaining power of GOD in hopes that the reader/hearer will desire a relationship with the Lord Jesus
Christ. Written from Toya’s heart to yours…

Elder Toriano Etheridge Sr.
Elder T.J. Etheridge called to preach from his mother’s womb was born December 16, 1970 in Hartford, Conn
to Vivian Etheridge and Harris Burton. Although reared in Poplar Branch, North Carolina, Elder Etheridge’s
ministry began to spread abroad at an early age as his God-parent’s Mother Mildred Owens, Deacon and
Mother Bray took him from prayer meeting to prayer meeting, in the different homes of the saints,
Assemblies and Conventions from Goldsboro, NC to Brooklyn, NY. With the ministry seed planted and
instilled he began proclaiming the gospel in various churches for youth and young adult services.
On the 1 Sunday in 1980 at Samuel Chapel Holiness Church, under the Late Elder little Joe Powell, Sr., he
experienced a true “Pentecostal Experience” that he never experienced before, which introduced him into
Holiness. As the old saints tarried with him until he was filled with the Holy Ghost and saved the way the
bible says to be saved; catapulting him to the accepting of his calling into ministry at the age of fifteen.
st
In 1985, he preached his initial sermon and became a local minister, under the pastorate of the Late Bishop
O.T. Nixon. After five years (1990), he was ordained as an Elder in the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ),
Inc. However, in 1994, he became a member of the Grand Ole Church of God in Christ (Greater North
Carolina Jurisdiction), and later ordained by Presiding Prelate, Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard.
Elder Etheridge is a member of New Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ Deliverance Center, Camden NC under
the gracious leadership of Elder Glenn Sawyer, where he serves on the Ministerial staff, Advisory board, and
the Sanctuary choir. He also serves in the Greater Windsor District, under Superintendent Clarence E.
Freeman and District Missionary Clara Drake.
He is employed with Currituck County Schools as a Teacher Assistant in the Special Education Department at
Currituck County High School in Barco, NC. He has three beautiful children, Jermaine, Victoria, and
Layquaun Etheridge, along with other extended family members who esteem him as a father figure in their
lives.
After the demise of his Godparents who had helped to instill true ministry, the Lord placed another Woman of
God in his life, Evangelist Peggy White as his mentor and a spiritual mother indeed.
The aim of this man of God is to please the Lord in all his doing, to not make the Lord ashamed, and to win
souls for the Kingdom. In all his ways, he acknowledges the Lord that He might direct his path.

Pastor DeeDee is the proud mother of one son, Jeffrey Azmar Rivers, and she
loves the life that God has allowed her to live. Her ultimate desire is to do the will

Minister Zulema N. Cheek
Singer, songwriter and vocal arranger, Zulema Cheek, is an artist whose focus is
not only in the sound of her music, but most importantly, the message it
conveys. At an early age, Zulema began writing conscious inspirations designed
to speak to the issues and circumstances of everyday people. Her use of
common topics intertwined with spiritual overtones creates a vehicle by which
challenging circumstances can be addressed in a way that is relatable to all. And
because her music deals with situations in everyday life, she has labeled her
music: LIFE MUSIC.
Zulema fuses the genres of R&B, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul and Rock to reach all
people in all walks of life. Her lyrics are meaningful and her arrangements stick
to your soul. Her inspirations are often taken from real-life personal issues. She
values her ability to sing about what many want to talk about, but can’t put into
words.
During her musical journey, Zulema has created two inspirational groups,
Blayze 5 in 2003 and Progress in 2009. Both groups have been very successful
in delivering the inspirational message of God’s love through good music and
have embraced the method and style that Zulema created in order to share the
message that God has given to her.
Now, a youth minister at her church, she continues to expand her goals and
expectations for herself, staying ready for whatever she is inspired to venture
into. Whether it be through unconventional messages to reach the youth, or
through her music, Zulema recognizes that her work is far from complete and
waits to embark on her next endeavor….so stay tuned!

Workshop Preface
The following workshop has been designed to openly and honestly deal with those issues dealing
with the questions concerning the existence of the prevailing power of prayer. Candid no holds
barred discussions will be held to determine if the participants realistically trust God and believe
in His ability to really answer their prayers and supplications. Participants will be directly
challenged by a self-evaluative survey to see if they actually understand the importance of a
“devoted prayer life” and how critical it is in their ability as a Disciples of Christ to prevail in
prayer. As the facilitator, I pray that each individual will leave this two-day session empowered to
honestly trust God more and know that they can prevail in prayer because He will and He does
answer “fervent and effectual” prayers.
Thursday, July 12th
Session 1: The Hermeneutics of Prayer
(What is prayer and who is God?)
Outline
1. Collectively develop a “realistic” definition of the concept of “prayer and praying”. (At the
age of 18-40, what does prayer and the practice of praying really mean to you? Is it just vain
repetitious sayings or verbiage that is uttered by someone at Church services or is it your
intimate language with God your Father?)
2. Discuss the meaning of the biblical phrase and preamble to the Model prayer, “Our Father
which art in Heaven”. (Is God really your Father or is He an image that you have learned to
respect and reverence because He is part of your “Church Culture”?)
3. Determine using a self-evaluative survey the existence of a “personal and covenant”
relationship with God. (Do you really have an intimate relationship with God through His
Son Jesus Christ? A relationship that will develop in you the type of faith that will allow you
to trust God enough to prevail in your prayer life real? Are you living in direct covenant with
God and His Word?)
39
Friday, July 13th
Session 2: The Fervency and Effectiveness of Prayer
(Do you know the Mechanics of Prayer?)
Outline
1. Develop the concept of “fervent and effectual prayer”. (Are you really chasing after God to
the point that you will not let go of your prayers and supplications? How easy is it for Satan
to distract your faith and diminish your expectancy of God in prayer?)
2. Teach the “mechanics” or rudiments of prevailing through the power of “fervent and
effectual prayer. (Do you really know how to pray looking and anticipating a “real” move of
God? Do you know how to petition God and wait for an answer? Are you praying amiss of
without faith?)

GENERAL ASSEMBLY YOUTH RETREAT 2012
Mentoring: Ministering to at
Risk Youth
“The Barnabas Principle”
Instructor: Pastor Tony Smith
7/12/2012
“And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. But Paul thought not good to take him with
them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. And the contention was so sharp
between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;” Acts
15:37-39 … “Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee for he is profitable to me for the ministry.” 2 Timothy
4:11… These two portions of Scripture afford us the value of mentorship and time. In this study we will look at some of the
challenges that our youth are facing and how we can come along side and be of positive assistance just as Barnabas and
Peter did with John Mark. We find a wonderful end result. Paul who formerly rejected this young man now sees his worth
and God allows this young man to be recorded in history as one of the Gospel writers. What an awesome privilege it is to be
a mentor to aide youth in navigating the “can be maze” of life.
