President's
corner
It is an exciting time at MCA! The work has begun on the
make-up air unit and replacement of the lower roof at
the community centre.
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up February 23. I hope that you can join us as we reflect on 2015
and plan for the next year. A wine (beer) and cheese social will follow the presentation and election of board
members.
If you have ever considered joining the board but were
unsure what it would entail, this article is for you!
There can be a maximum of 11 board members. There
are four executive positions (President, Vice-President,
Treasurer, and Secretary). We are both a governance
board and a working board. From a governance position, board members support the Community Association to meet its mission as presented in the Strategic
Plan. That is: MCA will provide responsive and responsible
management/guidance within the community and embrace principles of inclusion, sustainability, and community pride. Our guiding documents include the City of
Calgary lease agreement and the Societies Act. We have
by-laws and a strategic plan. Taken together, these
documents guide the board in our activities.
If enthusiastic, albeit misguided pairings of Halo’s
Master Chief and Metroid’s Samus Aran fail to convince
you of the inspirational quality of video games, there
are professionally published alternatives. Franchises
like Starcraft, Gears of War and Mass Effect have various
novels written about the source material of their respective games, while franchises like Resident Evil and,
soon, Warcraft, have film adaptations. The reverse process also applies: Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series, The
Witcher, served as the basis for the video game series
of the same name, developed by Polish game company
CD Projekt Red.
As a working board, we are involved with the community primarily through committees. At present, our busiest
committees are Finance, Planning, Building, Communication, and Community Pride and Revitalization (Annual
Clean-Up), and involvement with stakeholder meetings.
The key requirements to be a board member are:
•Be a member in good standing with the association
•Attend monthly board meetings
•Attend AGM
•Commit to the work of the association
•Participate in the work of the association
•Serve on committee(s)
•Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) Board Governance
If you are passionate about your community or have
three to five hours a month to volunteer, then I encourage you to consider becoming a board member. If you
would like more information, you can contact MCA or
me (403-286-0175). I look forward to seeing you at the
AGM.

“All of the Other Reindeer:”
Video Games, Art
and Their CrossInfluences
By Kyle Marshall
For several years, people have been debating whether
or not video games should be considered an art form;
mentioned in the same conversations as literature and
film and held to comparable standards. Prominent figures like Roger Ebert have argued against games being recognized in this way, while hosts of impassioned
gamers have argued the opposite position. While I do
not claim to offer a definitive answer to this debate, I
believe even the most steadfast opponents of gamesas-art would concede that video games have managed
to inspire art in other mediums.
The internet is host to a vast range of fan-created artwork, literature and music, inspired not only by beloved
film and television franchises, but by video games as
well. Admittedly, the quality and subject matter of this
“fan art” and “fanfiction” varies dramatically, and so it is
frequently disregarded by many outside of their respective fan-bases. However, there are examples of extremely
well-done artwork and literature inspired by video
games, with some of these authors and writers transitioning into more traditional, original works afterwards.
6
FEBRUARY 2016 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities
For us to say with certainty that video games do not
constitute art, is it not necessary for us to first say with
certainty what art is? If art is a means to inspire others,
then there are hordes of inspired fans and professional
writers that might make the argument that games do
qualify as art. If art is the result of acting upon inspiration, what do we call efforts to produce games based
on novels, films and television? While I cannot say with
authority that video games qualify as “art,” I do believe
that, if they don’t, they exist in the uncertain grey area
of things that may one day be considered such.

PLANNING REPORT
Montgomery
10th
Annual
Montgomery
Clean-Up &
Recycling Event
It’s not too early to start organizing your home, basement, garage, shed and yard waste. This year’s event will
be held early in May at the Montgomery Community
Centre (5003 16 Avenue NW).
We’ll be ready to take your crap - BRING IT! It’s free!
•Prepare your yard waste – One truck is dedicated for
organics so bring your leaves, branches and other yard
pruning bits. No plastic bags. Use paper yard waste
bags, bundle branches and cut large logs into smaller
pieces.
•Gather your recyclables – Bring used tires, bicycles,
scrap metals, electronics, small and large appliances
for refurbish or recycle.
•Extra garbage – Bring the extra garbage from your
yard or laneway after you’ve squeezed as much as you
can into your black bin.
•Old mattresses – Mattresses must be bagged or we
can’t help you unload it.
•Smile and be patient – Remember that this is a Montgomery Community Association volunteer-run event
saving you a trip to the landfill (where there might be a
lineup too) and saving you the landfill fees.
Sorry, but we cannot accept commercial building
materials, household toxics, auto waste, propane tanks,
chemicals, paint or large glass (doors, windows, mirrors).
Bring it to the City landfill.

Development Permits:
The Planning Committee reviewed one Development
Permit application recently: DP2015-5123 located at
4525 Monterey Av. NW.
Parking:
An issue that comes up quite often in our Planning
Committee meetings is parking. Parking constraints
are not new, nor are they unique to Montgomery. But
there never seems to be enough of it. The City Land
Use Bylaws set the parking requirements. In commercial developments, parking stalls are assessed based on
the area of the various uses within that development.
Parking for retail space is calculated at a different rate
than parking for office space, for medical space, or for
pet care service for example. For low-density residential
development, parking is set at two parking spaces per
house. For higher density residential developments, the
parking requirements are lower.
Densities in the inner city and established neighbourhoods are increasing; Montgomery is seeing more duplex developments, a few secondary suites, and also
more commercial developments. And that means more
parking pressures on everyone. (Just to be clear, density
refers to the number of living units within a given area
– it doesn’t refer to the number of people in that area,
although generally the two go hand in hand.) As we see
more infills and multi-family developments, we’ll also see
more street parking. The same goes with the increase in
commercial developments along our busier streets.
So, what to do about it?
First off, we need to remember that in residential neighbourhoods, street parking is for everyone. As much as
we’d like to, we don’t own the strip of curb in front of our
house. Your neighbour and his friends are allowed to
park in front of your house. Still, we seem to have these
unwritten rules about how that should be done – don’t
park in front of my front window or my front door; don’t
leave your car there for the winter season, etc. If your
neighbour is running a business from his home, then
that’s a different matter – there are rules about where
he can park his vehicles.
If lack of parking is a major concern on your street, it’s
possible to get ‘permit parking only’ tags. This requires
buy-in from at least 80% of the residents on your street.
The City will send out a petition that gets signed and
then they will review the request to restrict parking.
Parking permits are issued to license plates registered to
a specific address. And, when you move, they must be
returned to the City for the next owner. There are drawbacks to this type of parking zone restriction: only two
visitor permits are issued to a residence. When you have
large gatherings, visitors must find alternative parking
or risk a $75.00 fine.
Even though the majority of residents have two parking stalls, it doesn’t mean that they’re used for parking.
There’s a good percentage of homes that use their garage for storage. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about
taking back the garage and getting rid of all that stuff
– the old hardware that your dad gave you because he
didn’t want to throw it out, those old text books that are
so out of date, back issues of National Geographic …
The community clean-up is only a few months away.

Planning Committee Chair
Montgomery Community
Spring Soccer Program
The Montgomery Community Association is looking
for keen volunteers to take over the 2016 spring soccer session. Our outgoing volunteers have done their
reign as coordinators of the program and no longer
have children young enough to be in our program.
The program is looking for volunteers to help with
registration, as well as liaise with the inner city house
league. This would include attending some early season
meetings.
Montgomery’s soccer program is a community based
program that depends completely on volunteer
power. We are fortunate to live in a community with a
program that allows us to meet neighbours and make
friends in Montgomery (adults and kids alike), while
being outside and playing soccer. Past volunteers in
this program would encourage you to get involved
to keep this great Montgomery program running.
If you are interested in taking on this position to
work with other parents and children in the community please contact the Montgomery Community
Centre. 403-247-3116 [email protected].

Construction
Notice
East Bowmont Natural Environment Park Project
Introduction
The City has started construction of the East Bowmont Natural Environment Park. Phase one involves the construction of stormwater
ponds in East Bowmont Park. Work will begin in November 2015 and is
expected to be complete in winter 2017.
Construction impacts
Traffic
The access road to the construction site is located at the intersection
of Home Road and 32 AV NW. Flag persons will be onsite to ensure
heavy construction traffic can safely enter and exit the site. There will
be an increase in construction traffic along Home Road NW. Beginning
in late November a heavy volume of trucks will be removing fill from
the site. This excess fill cannot be utilized onsite. The trucking will take
place between 8 am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday for approximately
five weeks.
Safety
The work sites will be fenced off and restricted to construction personnel. For your safety, please do not enter the fenced-off construction area.
Noise/Dust
We recognize that construction creates additional dust and noise. We
ask for your patience as we work to minimize the impact to neighbouring residents. The contractor adheres to The City’s Community Standards Bylaw, for hours of operation, material storage and construction
best practices, including dust mitigation.

Friends,
January provided our office with the opportunity to
further connect with our constituents. Our office was
closed at the end of December and part of the first week
of January, so that our staff could enjoy the holiday season with friends and family, and we hope you had the
opportunity to do the same.
Throughout January, we were able to engage more
closely with some of our community associations within the Varsity constituency. We had the opportunity
to meet with members of the Dalhousie Community
Association, and the Brentwood Community Association. Over the next few years I look forward to every
opportunity to engage more fully and frequently with
our Community Associations, as they are the heart of
community building and organization. We also had the
opportunity to attend the University Heights Annual
General Meeting. We find our Community Association
AGM’s very informative, as our office continues to build
our knowledge of local community programming and
services.
As we head into February we are all getting prepared to
brave some of the coldest days of the year. This time of
year can bring out the “blahs” in many folks, as we long
for Alberta’s sunny summer months. If any of you find
yourself in need of a little extra support for your well
being at this time of year I encourage you to reach out.
Calgary has many fantastic resources such as the Distress Centre. As always, our office is happy to connect
you with a variety of community resources, and can
point you to free services and events to help you beat
the winter “blahs”.
As you may know, I will be welcoming a new member
to my family as my husband and I expect our first son at
the beginning of February. I want to take this opportunity to assure my constituents that my office and I will
continue to serve the community throughout February and thereafter. I am looking forward to introducing
each of you to my son when he arrives!

Spaghetti Cafe Prairie
Montgomery Community
O
pening in November of 2015 the Spaghetti
Cafe Prairie set out to do two things. We wish
to share our passion for food and also provide
great versions of everyone’s favourite comfort food; spaghetti. We are whole heartedly committed to our community and to giving our patrons high quality dishes at
a great value. No matter what kind of taste you prefer
we will have spaghetti options for you.

Our number is 403-455-7187 and orders can also be

Owned and operated by Chef Takeshi Yamaura our
menu features 14 different and distinct spaghetti dishes
ranging from the classic spaghetti and meatballs to
more modern takes such as spaghetti with salmon. We
have the western flavour of our chilli spaghetti and also
fun fusion dishes with the Japanese style spaghetti and
spaghetti with shrimp and cilantro.
Chef Takeshi hails from Kawasaki City Japan and brings
his 12 years of professional experience to our warm and
family friendly restaurant. As a child living in Japan Chef
Takeshi grew to love specialty restaurants and now he
puts that love onto the plate with Alberta’s only spaghetti specialty restaurant. In Japan it is common for
foreign cuisine to be served in restaurants that exclusively provide one type of dish. These establishments
then attempt to create traditional versions of their chosen dish alongside fusion versions.
Montgomery is a good place to live, work and play and
we are thrilled to be a part of such a strong community.
Montgomery has a long and proud tradition of having
wonderful people and great support for local businesses, things that we wanted to be associated with from day
one. From the beauty of the riverfront to the thriving
stores and restaurants, we feel that this is the place to be. 18
