The industrial objectives of
BIOCOPAC are:
Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Conserve
Alimentari Coordinator Research Institute Italy
Re-utilisation of processing by-products
from the tomato industry.
SYNPO a.s. Research institute is a Joint Stock
Company Czech Republic
Formulation of a natural lacquer to be
applied to metal packaging for food
products possessing chemico-physical
properties comparable to those of
conventional ones and usable in presentday industrial plants.
Research Business Association Agri-food National
Technological Centre Extremadura Spain
Production of an innovative packaging
metal for food products, much
appreciated by consumers and of
considerable marketing appeal for large
scale distribution.
Implementation of research in the sector
of biomaterials to be utilised in the food
packaging field, representing a very broad
knowledge base.
Dissemination of the BIOCOPAC
technological results to the food and
packaging industry, in particular SMEs.
Project funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programm, Research

The aim of the BIOCOPAC project is to develop a biobased lacquer for application to the outside and inside
of tinplate cans.
The lacquer will originate from processing by-products in
the tomato industry, offering alternative strategies for waste utilisation.

BIOCOPAC
can support companies
By producing an innovative packaging
metal for food products that is green
and more recyclable.
European production of
packaging in tinplate amounts
to 3,4 million tonnes/year
By finding alternative pathways to
deal with organic waste management
in compliance with the guidelines
set—out in the European 2008/98/
EC: re-utilisation of processing wastes
from the tomato industry, reduction of
the costs of disposal for the preserves
industry and a reduction in the
environmental impact.
Utilisation of renewable raw materials
for the extraction of natural resins for
lacquers.
Reduction in tomato wastes to be
disposed of.
Production of natural lacquers for food
cans.
Improvements making for a healthier
working environment in resin and lacquer
factories.
Provision of a safe and recyclable metal
packaging.
Establishment of new products for the
European SME metal packaging and
preserved food producers leading to
increasing competitiveness.
BIOCOPAC is one of the first approaches
to the development and use of biobased
thermosetting lacquer from renewable
resources in the rigid packaging sector.
BIOCOPAC is based on the extraction and
utilization of tomato cutin from tomato skins.
By enlarging the basis of raw materials
for lacquer formulation.
By increasing the competitiveness of
the metal packaging sector against
the strong annual growth rate of
biopolymers / bioplastics in the flexible
packaging industry.
European tomato residues (peels and
seeds) result in more than 200.000
tonns/year.
