SHOP
‘til you Drop!
The phrase, ‘shop ‘til you drop’
could have been coined in West
Virginia. Throughout the state’s 55
counties, there is a wide variety of
shopping choices, from antique shops
to farmers markets. This is especially
true for the state’s six Designated
Retirement Communities (DRC).
If you’re looking for something you
won’t usually see in a gift shop, visit
Tickety Boo Mercantile in Beckley.
Tickety Boo Mercantile is a one stop
shopping destination for those who
seek the unusual. They specialize in
the creative art of realizing decorative
and practical uses for old, familiar
things, by rescuing, recycling,
repurposing, refinishing, remodeling,
reconstructing, and reinventing old
stuff into modern memories.
In addition to many unique stores
like Tickety Boo, Raleigh County is
home to Tamarack: The Best of West
Virginia, the nations first retail
showcase of handcrafts, fine art and
regional cuisine. It’s comprised of
working studios for the resident
artisans, a fine art gallery, a theatre, a
Taste of West Virginia food court and
conference center. Experience oneof-a-kind, handmade treasures
displayed in a serene setting.
A trip to Weston should include a
stop at Roshell’s Antiques &
Collectibles. The store houses
thousands of treasures ranging from
the 1700’s to modern day; including
many custom made one-of-a-kind
items. These items range from
furniture and collectibles to
glassware, jewelry and art work.
In Lewis County, there is also
shopping to be done in any of the
county’s many museums including
the Mountaineer Military Museum
and the West Virginia Museum of
American Glass, or while you are
visiting Stonewall Resort.
Mercer County is home to Bluefield
West Virginia’s Landmark Antique
Mall. The Mall features three floors
full of treasures including books,

clocks, coins, dolls, political and
railroad items. So no matter what
your interests are or what you collect,
you will probably find something
there that you can’t resist taking
home.
Shopping at the Kirkwood Winery,
located in the heart of the mountains
of West Virginia in Summersville,
offers wines that reflect their
mountain heritage. Some of their
most popular wines include
Dandelion, Wild Elderberry,
Mountain Blueberry and Black Satin
Blackberry
In addition to their wines, Kirkwood
Winery is also home to the Isaiah
Morgan Distillery, southern West
Virginia’s first mini-distillery which
crafts Rye, Southern Moon, and
Grappa spirits that can be purchased
on-site. Small batches of Corn
Whiskey, crafted beyond the watchful
eyes of ‘revenuers’, is part of the lore
of Nicholas County so make sure you
bring home some of the flavor and
history of West Virginia.
In the Hinton Historic District, you
will find The Market at Courthouse
Square. In addition to food and
gelato, The Market sells a wide
variety of West Virginia made local
products including items from Blue
Smoke Salsa, Ordinary Evelyn’s and
ThistleDew Farm. You can also get
teas, candles and other items at The
Market. And did I mention they have
gelato?
Monongalia County boasts

History & Heritage
Among some of the most
rugged mountainous terrain
in all of central Appalachia,
the region surrounding the
Bluefields has a fascinating
and highly significant
history, dating to numerous
Native American villages
along the rivers which
course through the beautiful
if foreboding landscape.
Pinnacle Rock State Park’s
pillar of granite
demonstrates the forces of
nature which created the
limestone valleys and
bluestone granite deposits
which mark the region of
the Two Virginias.
The first Europeans
entered the remote valleys
in the years after the
American Revolution,
fiercely fighting the original
inhabitants for possession of
the rich farmlands of
Mercer and Tazewell
counties. These settlers
carved out a hardy existence,
farming, hunting, and
assisting western settlers
along the Trail of the
Lonesome Pine. Largely
southern in sympathy
during the Civil War, the
settlers found themselves
split along state lines after
the birth of West Virginia
in 1863.
However, soon after
the creation of the Mountain State out of the Old
Dominion, large deposits of bituminous coal began to
attract massive industrial
investment into the often
impenetrable mountains.
Soon, the Norfolk &
Western and later the
Virginian railroads chose the
Bluefields for their regional
headquarters. Hundreds of
coal mines opened up in
southern West Virginia and
southwestern Virginia,
bringing thousands of
European immigrants and
African American coal
miners to swell the region’s
population.
Large cities such as
Bluefield and Princeton sprang up to serve the growing
population of miners and their families who mined the
coal which transformed America from a rural to an
urban nation. The abundant and plentiful energy
enabled the United States to
become a world power,
defending democracy in
World War I and II. The
region’s national significance
was demonstrated by the
exclusive reliance of the
United States Navy upon
“smokeless” coal from the
region.
With a rich past which tells
the story of opportunity and
development, the Bluefields
await a new chapter in their
rich and fascinating history.
Notable attractions in the
area include the Eastern
Regional Coal Archives,
Mercer County War Museum, Historic Crab Orchard
Museum, Princeton Railroad Museum and several
others.

providing a service to our community (see

Landscaping/Greenhouse is located on
Middletown Road
in Richwood and is
your ‘one-stopshop’ for several
things. If you want
to go hunting, fishing, and camping;
they have what you
need. Do you have
meat that needs
processing? They can do that. Maybe you
want to raise your own garden or landscape
your yard - they have just what you need.
And, talk to them about doing the landscaping
for you - they do a great job. How about
some fresh in-season produce? And, yes, how
about some ‘ramps’ to eat? Come to think of
it, make your ‘one-stop’ many future stops
(see photos).
Sheltered Workshop of Nicholas County,
Inc./DBA Bright Horizons is a community
rehabilitation
program.
Located on
Webster Road in
Craigsville, you
might not be
aware of the different items that they have available. The Gift
Shop has t-shirts, tote bags, fire starters, and
hats all made in-house. They, also, have
primitive items and jewelry that are not made
in-house. So, visit the Gift Shop, discover
their ‘in-house’ talents, and ask about the
other things they do and offer (see photos).

Gauley River Pottery is located on West Mt. Lookout
Road in Mt. Lookout. Every piece of pottery is hand
crafted starting as a ball of clay and thrown on a wheel, no
two are exactly the same. If you look closely you will find
throw lines or may be a finger print. The pottery is made
for everyday use in modern kitchens but is striking enough
for display in any home. Come visit their working studio
and full gallery. Watch them make the pottery while you
shop (see photos).

Beckley Running Supply
Beckley Running Supply is the result of a dream almost 20
years in the making. After years in the corporate world, the
restaurant and retail
service industries,
owner Terry Hoskins
has fulfilled his dream
of opening a store dedicated to the running
enthusiast.
Hoskins had a longtime interest in outdoor
sports - running, road
and mountain biking. His passion for promoting a healthy
lifestyle and his commitment to community involvement ultimately led the creation of Beckley Running Supply.
Located in downtown
Beckley, Beckley Running
Supply is one of only four running shoe stores in the state
and the only one in southern
West Virginia. In addition to
shoes, the store also carries
sports apparel, hydration
packs, reflective gear, compression sleeves, and nutritional items.
“I’ve been quite pleased with
the market for running shoes in this area,” says Hoskins. “It’s
certainly bigger than I originally anticipated. Downtown
Beckley is a great location for us. We draw customers from all
of southern West Virginia.”
The store also sponsors regular runs around town that are
open to the public - Trail Run Tuesday and a group run each
Thursday.
Beckley Running Supply is located at 118 Main Street, and
can be reached at (681) 238-5885, or visit online at
www.beckleyrunningsupply.com.
In addition to owning Beckley Running Supply, Hoskins also
serves on the Board of Directors for Active Southern West
Virginia, a non-profit organization that promotes healthy lifestyles.

“Active Southern West Virginia strives to create opportunities for community members to be more active and
to celebrate an active lifestyle,” says Executive Director
Melanie Seiler. “Our region boasts a multitude of outdoor recreation activities and Active Southern WV
builds off of these resources to create community based

Tickety Boo Mercantile
Tickety Boo Mercantile, owned by Sasha Cantley and Nancy Chambers (formerly of Nancy’s
Attic), began six years ago as a dotcom only enterprise, then expanded to flea markets, craft shows,
and an antique mall before becoming a bricks-and-mortar store in
the heart of downtown Beckley.
Billing itself as a one-stop shopping destination for those “who
seek the unusual,” what Tickety Boo offers is a fresh take on old,
familiar things. Reuse, recycle, repurpose, refinish, remodeling,
and just general reinvention is the hallmark of how Tickety Boo
realizes decorative and practical uses for loved, but timeworn,
pieces.
“What we want to do is make the customer smile,” says coowner Cantley. “We get a lot of custom orders where people want
to keep something that is precious to them but in a new way. So
we’ve made benches out of beautiful headboards and footboards,
for example. We respect what the piece originally was, and just
look for ways to revive something, rather than let it perish.”
Offering a combination of primitive, retro, traditional, eclectic, fun, Tickety Boo offers a constantly changing inventory of smaller items to fit
every style.
The store also promotes local artists by featuring
handmade items, such as jewelry, stained glass,
metal art, candles, and handmade hair bows.
And Tickety Boo also does a brisk rental business. In addition to redesign staging services for both residential and commercial, Tickety Boo if
often called upon to provide antique china, candles, chandeliers, and interesting ‘found’ objects for
weddings or parties.
So the next time you’re looking for something unique, or don’t know what to do with that cabinet
you inherited from grandma, think of Tickety Boo Mercantile!
Tickety Boo Mercantile is located at 337 Neville Street,
(304) 573-1013 or (304) 575-8202, and on the web at

Lesley Gray Baker, Director of Operations of the Mine

says. “But we also

The Fudgery offers as many as 12 different flavors of fudge

for the 2013 Boy Scout Jamboree, a camouflage fudge was
created to mark the occasion.

Fall is the perfect time to take advantage of Morgantown’s
scenic beauty and comfortable weather. From exciting outdoor
adventures to colorful mountains and fun fairs and festivals,
Morgantown provides a variety of fall fun and the perfect
setting for an autumn weekend getaway.
The rugged terrain is a mountain biker, hiker or rock
climber’s dream. These outdoor enthusiasts can get all the
adventure they can hope for at Coopers Rock State Forest or
nearby Chestnut Ridge Park. Over 50 miles of trails wind over
ridges, valleys and cliffs and the main overlook provides one
of the most breathtaking views of the Cheat River at Coopers
Rock. Chestnut Ridge Park also provides license-free catch
and release fishing.
For a more relaxing stroll or bike ride, try the Caperton Trail
that runs along the Monongahela River through the heart of
Morgantown. Connecting trails, like Decker’s Creek Trail and
Mon Trail, will connect you to Preston County or Marion
County, where the terrain goes from paved to crushed
limestone and the elevation climbs to over 1,000 feet. Access
all three from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park. Take
the Mon Trail North and stop off with the kids at Tugboat
Depot. The kids will love playing on this playground located
just along the trail. During the summer months, the Rail Trail
hosts several walks and runs that benefit local charities. A
great treat for the avid runner!
While outdoor adventures are a main attraction in the Greater
Morgantown area, the wide range of fairs and festivals is a
must see as well. Start the Autumn Fairs and Festival season
off with a new and exciting event. This year kicks off the
Inaugural Morgantown Marathon - 26.2 heavenly miles
through the Morgantown area and neighborhoods. Come out
and cheer on the runners or volunteer to be a part of this new
event. Not a fan of running? Then you can take in the West
Virginia Wine and Jazz Festival, September 19-20, at Camp
Muffly. Join local wineries, live jazz musicians, artisans and
gourmet food vendors for this ID required event. Bring a
blanket or chair and park yourself in the midst of the action
with a bottle of wine. Bring the family! The Wine and Jazz
Festival is Kid Friendly! Why not spend the weekend full of
ìspiritî both cheering for Marathon participants and then
kicking back to enjoy WV wines?
When October rolls around, leaf peeping season is in full
swing. The mountains are a masterful quilt of colors. But,
come for the leaf peeping and stay for the events! October’s
hit-list is just as exciting! On October 2nd, Main Street
Morgantown and Arts Monongahela partner up for a wonderful
community event. Venture to downtown Morgantown for The
Arts Walk and Art is Food event. Friday night’s starts Arts
Walk showcases local artisans and musicians in downtown
businesses and restaurants, staying open late for live music,
local artisan work and great dining. A relaxing evening
strolling through downtown is what this event shares.
And the most anticipated event of the fall is naturally,
Mountaineer Football season. Tickets are still available. The
Friday night Homecoming Parade is always a favorite. And, if
you don’t have a ticket, pick a seat in one of the local
restaurants. We’re sure you’ll join up with some Mountaineer
fans, those with tickets or without. Homecoming weekend rolls
around October 10th and 11th.
For more information about area attractions and events, please
contact the Greater Morgantown Convention & Visitors Bureau
at 800-458-7373 or online at www.tourmorgantown.com. Or
