A key NGAT mission is to preserve and enhance benefits and quality-of-life programs for our members and their
families. We make sure members of Congress understand the unique challenges of Guard service and give voice
to our members’ concerns about military pay, health care, survivor benefits, education, and other quality-of-life
programs. NGAT is actively supporting several legislative initiatives currently before Congress.
Guard Retirement
An amendment to the Senate National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would reduce the Reserve retirement age by three
months for each 90 days served on active duty since 9/1/2001.
Montgomery G.I. Bill for the National Guard and Reserves
An amendment to the Senate NDAA would authorize Guard members to use their GI Bill benefits up to 10 years after they
separate from the Guard.
TRICARE Fee Increase Freeze
An amendment to the Senate NDAA would bar any increases in TRICARE fees for fiscal 2008.
Retirement Points
An amendment to the Senate NDAA would increase the maximum annual points credible for Reserve Component retirement
to 130 points for 2007 and subsequent years.
The above initiatives are currently in the Senate version of the NDAA, and would have to be retained in the Senate-House
conference committee version to be voted on by both houses.
NGAT is actively supporting each of these initiatives.
Servicemembers Civil Relief Act Expansion
H.R. 3298 would expand the protections available to National Guard members under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act
(SCRA) with respect to terminating or suspending contracts for cellular phone service, cable or satellite television service,
internet service, automobile insurance, water, electricity, oil, gas, telephone and other utilities.
2008 Legislative Task Force Visit
The NGAT Legislative Task Force visit is currently scheduled for 5-7 February 2008. Please contact Ray Lindner
([email protected]) if you are interested in participating in the task force activities.

receives proper missions as part of the Total Force; and fights for equitable
retirement programs that give Guardsmen the support they’ve earned.

Troops to Teachers Provides
Job Opportunities
VA’s Suicide Hotline Begins Operations
To ensure veterans with emotional crises have
round-the-clock access to trained professionals, the
Department of Veterans Affairs has opened a national
suicide prevention hotline for veterans.
The toll-free hot line number is 1-800-273-TALK
(8255). VA’s hotline will be staffed by mental health
professionals in Canandaigua, N.Y. They will take tollfree calls from across the country and work closely with local VA
mental-health providers to help callers. H
Troops to Teachers (TTT) is a federally funded program to assist military
personnel and veterans transition to a new career as public school teachers
in “high-needs” schools and districts. Counseling, referral, and placement
assistance is provided through a network of state offices. In some cases TTT
provides financial assistance to eligible veterans.
The Troops to Teachers eligibility criteria have been broadened to include
all military retirees regardless of when you retired or even if you are already
certified and are now teaching. There may still be some $$$$$ available
for you! There are also categories for active National Guard members and
spouses as well.
For more information about Troops to Teachers contact Meryl Kettler or Dale
Reynolds at 1-800-810-5484 or visit one of the following web sites
for assistance. H
