Cook Genealogy - Autauga County Genealogy and Other Information
II. Descendants of James Council Cook
1. James Council Cook was born on 25 April 1817, probably in South Carolina1, but
probably moved to Mississippi with his family in the 1820s2. He moved to Autauga
County in about 1842. He died on 22 July 1903 in Autauga County, and was buried in
Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
During the Civil War, he served in the 2nd Alabama Infantry, Moore's Company,
Confederate Army, from 2 May 1864 to 5 April 1865.
He went by the nickname “Jim.”
descriptions of him.
We have neither photographs nor physical
James C. Cook applied for a Confederate pension, but died before it was approved.
The application, eventually approved for his widow after his death, was initially
rejected because he was confused with another James Cook who was a deserter. After
a letter from his wife to the state clarified the situation, the pension was approved.
James C. Cook received grants for land generally west of Liberty Baptist Church, as
illustrated in the certificate and map shown in the following figures. His son Howard
eventually owned the land immediately to the east. Matthew Cook owned a plot of
land to the south (though his relationship to other Cook families is undetermined).
Liberty Baptist Church, shown in the following figures, was founded around 18603,
and is located on land that may have belonged to either James C. Cook or one of his
sons.
James Cook had a very large family, shown in a following copy of a page from
Joseph Cook’s Bible. Census records from 1850 and 1860, listing most his children,
are also shown on the following pages.
The relationship between James Council Cook and other Cook families in Autauga
County in the early 1800s cannot be defined. James Council Cook may have been a
cousin of James Cook, the Elder, one of the earliest settlers in Autauga County.
In the 1850 census, he is listed as "James Cook, Jr." Since he is clearly not the son of
James Cook, the Elder (listed in the 1850 census as James Cook, Sr.), the census taker
may have listed him as “Junior” because he was younger than the “Senior.” The early
records of Autauga County definitely indicate several unidentified or unconnected
1
Census records, the only records of the birthplace of James Cook, are inconsistent. Census entries by John
Cook, his son, unambiguously list his father’s birthplace as South Carolina.
2
James Council Cook cannot be found in the 1840 Federal census in any state. More than likely, he was
living in Mississippi in 1840, since census records for his children Ezekiel and John state they were born in
Mississippi. The census taker probably just missed him.
3
The estimate of 1860 is based on the dates of the earliest graves in the church cemetery.

Cook families in the area before 1860, but none can be definitely tied to James
Council Cook.
James Council Cook married Nancy Ann Ethridge on 3 June 1838 in Noxubee
County, Mississippi. Nancy Ann Ethridge was born in 1822 in Mississippi, and
probably died between 1861 and 1866. She was called “Ann,” or “Annie.”

Few people remember James Lorenzo Cook, the man who not only helped
organize Boone Chapel Church, Prattville, but also Pleasant Hill Baptist
Church on Bridge Creek Road, Prattville, Alabama.
There were no churches within an area of seven or eight miles in either
direction. Every community needs a church, he said. He discussed the
situation with preachers from other denominations who would come to have
church services in our home, or neighboring homes. He (James Lorenzo
Cook) told these folks that if they wanted to start a church, he would be glad,
and would cooperate. Otherwise, he would start a Baptist church. No one
did. So, he met with others in our community. He'd already started Boone
Chapel Church in the Hollon community, several years earlier.
We met for church services first in the home of Mrs. Betty Tomberlin, who
lived close to the land where we planned to locate the church (where it is
now). Within a few weeks the men of the church had built a brush arbor. From
these humble beginnings (bear in the mind it was in the late 1930's during the
GREAT DEPRESSION, and money was almost non-existent! We later built a
frame building, a joint effort of all concerned. One man (church member) had
a sawmill, one donated trees, the timber was cut and hauled to the sawmill,
and thence to church land. Those same men built the building. It was built of
rough, "undressed" lumber, but was a pride and joy to us, who had been
meeting in the brush arbor until this building was completed. After a good
many years a fine brick building was built, and the church is still active after
all these years. James Lorenzo Cook said he would not have been successful
in the Lord's work without the constant encouragement of his wife (my mother)
Mattie DeLoach Cook, who preceded him in death.

61
After the death of Nancy Ann Ethridge, James Council Cook married Sarah Ann McNeil
Bazzell (daughter of Daniel McNeil and Hannah Oates), probably on 20 December 1866
in Autauga County. There is a marriage record of a James Cook marrying Sarah Ann
"Bullard" on this date. We suspect that the clerk somehow wrote down the wrong name,
perhaps Sarah married a Bullard who died during the war, or perhaps the record is of an
entirely different James Cook. Confederate pension records imply that Sarah Ann Bazzell
knew James Cook during the war, prior to 1866.
Sarah Ann McNeil Bazzell was born on 28 February 1842 in Autauga County, died in
1937 in Autauga County, and was buried in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Sarah
Ann McNeil, probably adopted by Robert Counsel Bazzell, after he married Hannah
Oates McNeil, was the daughter of Daniel McNeil. Often repeated family legends state
that Sarah Ann Bazzell was a full-blooded Indian, but there is no record to support such a
claim. Census records consistently list her as White.

Muse was born on 12 January 1867 in Autauga County, died on 3 January 1925 in

show that his name was originally Benedict. Either he changed his name to Benjamin,

put that on the grave marker.

Some memories of mine:
•
•
•
•
•
Daddy’s boss, Matt Bowen, once visited Papa Joe at home in
Alabama when Matt was driving a Cadillac. Not too long after that,
Papa Joe visited us in Florida and a fellow I was dating came over
in a new Cadillac. His dad was a dealer here. So Papa Joe quietly
asked me later if all our friends drove new Cadillacs.
Daddy was truly an unselfish man, a Southern gentleman. He was
especially patient with Ed and Susan when they were small and
would gladly do all sorts of tasks, like scrapping gum off shoes for
them.
Mama and Daddy worked together at Cudahy Packing in
Montgomery and then she moved to New Orleans. On a trip back to
Montgomery to visit her mother, Mama stopped by Cudahy to visit
her former coworkers. Daddy asked her out to dinner. She said she
quickly refused, saying, “I don’t go out with married men.” Then he
explained that he had lost his first wife. Mama said she felt so badly
at her outburst that she accepted without further hesitation.
Daddy was a member of Liberty Baptist Church all his life. Mama
and I were Methodists and he regularly attended with us, but he
never wanted to change his membership.
Although he had the usual aches and pains that we all have, he said
he never had a headache. Sometimes one would “threaten,” he’d
say, but never happen.

Memories from
Patricia Ann Cook Vinson
Some of my fondest memories include growing up in the house with Mama Ada and
Papa Joe. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. I feel that environment
festered a unique closeness in my immediate family. Mama Ada and Papa Joe had an
impact on my life that most grandchildren don’t get to realize. I’ll always remember
their daily example of Bible study and prayer. Visits by Aunt Annie (Mama Ada’s
sister) were always such a treat. She had such a colorful personality. To hear Mama
Ada and Aunt Annie talk about their younger days was always a delight. During those
visits the house was filled with constant laughter. My Aunt Ophelia Manning (great
aunt on Mother’s side of the family) once shared with me that it was such a joy to be
in the company of Mama Ada and Aunt Annie because, even as young girls, they were
always happy and laughing—sharing their laughter with others.

I remember Aunt Annie’s (Mama Ada’s sister) visits to our house, because she was
such a character. I remember taking her home and her coming back the same day.
Also, living with Mama Ada taught us so many things that helped us then and now. I
remember going to Uncle Lee’s store and his always giving me a surprise. Sundays
were always special because the entire family came to our house, especially when
Uncle Doyle and Aunt Louise were there. I remember Cheryl taking Patricia and me to
the soda fountain inside RexAll drugs. We were SO COOL! Most of all, I remember
Aunt Katheryn giving us haircuts and perms.

I am so happy that I can remember Mama Ada and the special person that she was. I
remember us fighting over who would look at the comics first on Sunday afternoons, and
walking to the cemetery, and her having “special chair” to sit on when she got tired. I
remember us going to visit Aunt Louise and Uncle Doyle in Decatur. I will never forget
the telephone calls from Aunt Katheryn. Another memory that will last forever is the
time that Aunt Doris told me that she ate “fish eyes” and “fish heads.” Two of my best
memories are of all the family being together watching old family movies and having
huge bags of popcorn. I will never forget all our family being together for Daddy’s 70th
birthday surprise party. I will always appreciate growing up with such a close family
influence.
