Dear Mr. Broddy,
We are excited to share with you an update on our 2013 Programs. With your assistance
Northern Youth Abroad (NYA) was able to support 44 Participants through our core programs,
as well as further develop the services we provide to program alumni as they go onto to
continue to pursue personal and career success.
NYA is committed to developing young leaders in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories who
have a solid understanding of the North’s important place in Canada and the world. These youth
return home with new skills and the confidence to positively contribute to their communities.
All participants spent more than 200 hours developing their occupational interests, gaining
transferable skills for the workplace, and identifying future career goals during their ten month
involvement with NYA. Additionally, each participant had the opportunity to engage in various
activities focused on sharing their culture, while learning about life in their host community.
Participation in our programming allows youth to earn up to nine high school credits. As many
participants are in the final stages of completing high school, these credits are one of many
tangible benefits of program completion.
Please find attached a detailed program report.
Moving forward in 2014 we are committed to enhancing the way that we promote and
acknowledge our funding partners. Some of the ways that we intend to do this is with a new
website launch later this year, and by providing you with more information about how we are
recognizing our corporate partners. We are also interested in working with you to best highlight
your involvement with our organization through your own promotional materials and/or events.
Please find enclosed our 2014 calendar, showcasing images from our past year. We are so
thankful for the support we have received from SSi Micro and look forward to working with you
again in 2014. Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me toll
free at 1-866-212-2307 or by email at [email protected].

Introduction
Northern Youth Abroad sincerely appreciates the continued financial support it has received from SSi Micro.
Our partnership has been based on a solid foundation of helping build the capacity of youth from the north
and has advanced the shared objectives of both of our organizations. We have just concluded our 16th year of
programming and your support has allowed us to deliver a meaningful leadership and education program, which
saw 44 young Northerners complete their respective program in 2013.
Please accept the following as our final report for our 2013 programming. Audited financial statements will be
forwarded to you once they have been completed.
2013 Program Highlights
2013 was a year with many accomplishments for Northern Youth Abroad, with 36 young people taking part in
the Canadian Program and 8 more in the International Program. All 44 participants finished their respective
programs and no one left placement before completion - always a significant accomplishment. With each
participant eligible to earn up to nine high school credits, NYA was able to award a total of 369 credits in 2013,
assisting each Participant toward high school completion.
This year Northern Youth Abroad introduced a short-term immersive program at Algonquin College for the
International participants, allowing them to gain exposure to a variety of career and post-secondary training
options. NYA hopes to strengthen its relationship with Algonquin this year with the implementation of a trades
program for 16 participants.
Other highlights included;
• Awarding two Outstanding Alumni Awards, six Outstanding Volunteer Award and 10 Alumni Bursaries
• Appointing Karen Aglukark as our first alumni Chair-Elect. Karen will become Chair of the Board of Directors
in January 2015.
• Hosting our third Alumni Intern. April Akeeagok spent four months as a NYA Staff Member, working on
programming and Alumni related projects.
• David Joanasie became our first alum to become a member of the Legislative Assembly. David was elected to
the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in November, representing the South Baffin constituency.

2013 International Program
Eight graduates of the Canadian Program took part in the International Program. Participants traveled to Southern
Africa to volunteer at community projects in Botswana. Participants spent the summer in Ramotswa, living and
working alongside community members and volunteering their time.
Participants prepare for their placement by completing work aimed at further developing the skills that they
gained in the Canadian Program. The International Program has participants take a deeper look at global
citizenship, development and culture. Their orientation coincides with the Canadian Program allowing the
participants to mentor their Canadian counterparts by sharing their own experiences and learning, while
preparing for their International Project. Each group takes part in team building exercises, and participates in
sessions on international travel, development education, governance and leadership, and issues such as HIV/
AIDS. International participants take part in a First Aid training refresher and wilderness First Aid training.

Looking Ahead
Having concluded selection for our 2014 programming, we look forward to another exciting year. Our success
over the last sixteen years has seen NYA grow from initially being run by a small group of volunteers who received
20 applications for 10 positions to an organization with 10 board members, four full-time staff, and almost
350 Alumni. Last year we received over 220 applications for 40 positions and anticipate increased number of
applications in the future. Our programming truly leaves a positive impact on the youth we serve.
Your financial contribution this year and in years past has helped NYA develop young leaders who are generating
positive momentum in their communities and across the north. Our participants have gained many valuable
employment and life skills and have come away from the program with a greater understanding of their Territory
and how it fits into the national and international realm. They have also gained the skills and confidence to make
a difference in their communities. We are certain we can demonstrate good value for the investment you have
made and we hope that our partnership continues in years to come.
I was able to find the confidence to do things that I had avoided back home, and learned to
be more self-directed. The chance to develop my interpersonal skills also arose, and I find
myself a bit more comfortable approaching and talking to people.

Kelli participated in the 2006 Canadian Program followed by
the 2007 International Program. Kelli credits NYA with greatly
impacting her life. She has always been passionate about
teaching, and wanted to attend postsecondary school to further
her education, knowing that doing so in the south would be the
most beneficial. In 20-- Kelli graduated from the University of
Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Kinesiology/Bachelor of Education

While doing her practicum, Kelli travelled abroad to Nepal and
Poland teaching English as a Second Language, and while there she shared her culture as well as her knowledge

Program. After NYA, Julian got his diploma in Business Administration from
Grand Prairie Regional College.
Julian had always wanted to contribute to his community As a participant in the
NYA program he put this goal into action. Julian enjoys volunteering, and his
time spent doing so raised his hopes for his community. Julian hopes to help
repair the recreational centre, and obtain a better housing infrastructure budget
in Behchokǫ̀ .
Julian hopes to one day become involved in politics and witness his dreams for
NWT and his community become a reality.
Emma Pope - Norman Wells
Emma participated in the Canadian Program in 2009, and
volunteered at the retail store Warehouse One in Selkirk,
Manitoba.

currently studying “Apparel Design and Technology” at Olds

industry from a business perspective, but found her true
passion was in clothing construction and transferred programs.
She is set to graduate next year
After Emma graduates, she plans to stay in Alberta and would like to do alterations for a bridal store. Eventually,
she hopes to open her own business making graduation dresses.
Brandon Etsemba Sangris - Ndilo
Brandon is passionate about Broadcasting and Film, and is currently studying
Communications and Media Foundations at Centennial College in Toronto.
While participating in the NYA Program in 2010 Brandon had a work placement
related to film when he volunteered at a movie theatre in Langley, British
Columbia.
Brandon believes it’s important to keep his cultural traditions strong and enjoys
helping his family by hunting and trapping with his father, and hauling firewood
when he can. After graduating, Brandon hopes to contribute to his community
and set an example of leadership and community involvement.
Holly Nowdlak - Iqaluit
Holly participated in the Canadian Program in 2011, was placed in
Outlook, Saskatchewan and worked at the Outlook Health Centre
helping care for senior patients.
Since September 2012, Holly has been working on an antitobacco campaign called “Tobacco Has No Place Here” funded by
the Government of Nunavut (GN). Part of the campaign involves
bringing together youth leaders to travel to various communities
and facilitate four different workshops for other youth, with the
aim of encouraging Nunavummiut to quit smoking. Holly recently
started a new job as a Contract and Property Administration
Officer for the GN Department of Health.
Valerie Kogvek - Gjoa Haven
Valerie participated in the Canadian program in 2006. She graduated
high school in 2008, and immediately moved to Nanaimo, British
Columbia, where she participated in the Aboriginal Bridging
Program. Furthering her education, Valerie graduated from Nunavut
Sivuniksavut in 2013. She is considering becoming a politician one
day.
Valerie’s hope is to help bring attention to some of the challenges
facing Nunavut. Valerie believes working together as a community,
and listening to the opinions of elders and young people is the best
way to address these challenges.
