Welcome to Fall 2015! We have been inspired by the 1 Million Hours Celebration of Livermore’s
Centennial Lightbulb to bring our Tri-Valley Community the brightest selection of lifelong learning
opportunities! We have a well curated group of exceptional classes that will inspire you this Fall.
Looking to learn to draw? Improve your computer skills? Become the Certified Social Media
professional at your office? What about learning how to converse with your Spanish patients about
their medical concerns? Maybe you are interested in learning to speak Chinese, play the guitar or
make your own gifts for the holidays.
Community Education at Las Positas College can support you as you work to achieve these goals.
Fee-based classes are not for college credit, and have no grades or transcripts. Brighten your own
life with learning this Fall! Register today. (Registration instructions are on Page 22.)

“My sculptural installations consist of sewn and manipulated fabric
sculpture (apparel, home decor, equestrian, camping, nautical) as well
as photographic images and video. I use fabric, video and architectural
elements to create objects and environments that explore how fabric can
protect or control and reveal and define social position. My art references
architecture, clothing and customs to investigate boundaries of personal
and public space. I like to play with trappings that serve to wrap people
into a social structure.” Kate teaches drawing for Community Education.
See Page 4 for her class.
“Handmade skin care products have always intrigued me. It started as teenager, when I experimented with homemade facial masks made from whatever I found in the kitchen.
Later, I decided to branch out and try my hand at handmade soap. I still
remember that first soap bar I made -- man, was I proud! So proud, in fact,
that I made dozens more and handed them out to friends and family.
From then on, I was hooked. If I could make all-natural soap, what other
skin and bath products could I make with natural ingredients?
Since then, I have made every skin care, cosmetic and bath product imagAngela Palmer
inable. Truly, it’s an obsession. I grow my own herbs and flowers specifically to add to my skin care creations. I love handmade skin care, and I hope you will too!” take
Angela Palmer’s classes listed on page 8.

FAST TRACK Guitar: Strummin’ Fancy
The basic up/down strum does not always work for all
songs. Basic Chordal accompaniments can be flavored up
with some Fancy Strummin’ instruction. The rhythm riff
can be the signature of a song. You can make a chord progression sound different every time you play it by developing your right hand to play different rhythms and strums.
It is rhythm that lays down the groove and often sets the
flavor of the musical piece. These techniques can be applied to any genre of music and can make playing your
guitar challenging, interesting and fun. Students must have
their own guitar (acoustic or electric) and bring a chromatic
tuner the first day of class. Candace Brown, MS, has taught
guitar and performed professionally in bands for many
years. Candace owns Music Arts Academy in Livermore,
and provides private guitar lessons and voice. MU786 9/16/15-10/7/15 Wed 7:30 - 9:00 PM Material Fee (in class) $20

than to learn simple songs to sing around the campfire
while camping, around a firepit in your own backyard, or at

and sing campfire songs. Learn to read easy chords by using chord diagrams and learn simple strum patterns. Easy
campfire songs with have 2 to 3 chords each. Ages 16 to
adult! Please bring your guitar to the first class. Brown AL536 10/14/15-11/4/15 Wed 7:30 - 9:00pm Material Fee (in class) $15

lines? No one to jam with to enjoy your playing and continue your learning? Class brings guitarists together to learn

Piano for the Adult Beginner If you always wanted to learn how to play the piano, now is your
chance! This easy step-by-step class will guide you through
the fundamentals of piano playing which includes rhythm, music notation, and music theory. Beginning adult students will
find this course challenging enough to be interesting, yet easy
enough to experience a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Music has been Galina Corkery’s lifelong passion. She began her studies of classical piano, voice and choir at the age of
five in Russia’s highly competitive Vladivostok School of Music.
Her musical studies continued at Vladivostok University where
she graduated with her formal degree in piano and voice. Upon
moving to the Bay Area in 2003, she opened her own studio
which combines the best of Russian and American approaches
to music for all ages and levels. PA126 9/14/15-10/5/15 Mon 7:00 - 7:45pm Material Fee (in class) $21

not succeeded? In this program, designed for the complete
beginner with no musical background (or for those wanting
to brush up on their music reading from childhood), you’ll
learn quickly the basic music reading skills so that you can
follow up with the next class, Instant Piano, or continue
with traditional music lessons some day. This is an ideal
introduction to the music theory you need to play any instrument or sing alone or in a choir, and you’ll also learn
the fundamentals of the piano keyboard. Class size limited

learn HOW to play the piano like pop piano players after just a
few hours of instruction. You can learn enough in this one-day
workshop to unlock your hidden musical talent, even if you’re
a beginner and do not know how to read music. The PBS program, Piano in a Flash, is based on this method. You’ll learn
how to make all the chords you’ll need to play any song in
this one session. You’ll then perfect your skill at home using a
resource book and CD purchased from the instructor. It’s easy,
fun, and musically correct! Total beginners, please take the
Music Reading class offered on the same day first. Class size

Parenting
Wellness and Activity
Helping Older Children Become
Responsible and Independent CPR and AED for the Community Lack of responsibility is a common complaint of parents of
older teens and young adults. We expect our children to get a
good education, grow up, and move away from home. Many
children struggle with this. Problems may begin with a high
school student performing below his ability or may show
up after graduation where the child seems unmotivated to
work hard in college, learn a trade, or get a job. As parents,
there is much we can do to help our children learn to be
responsible and become independent. This class will teach
you what to do in the teen years to help your child successfully navigate the path to becoming an independent and selfsufficient adult. It will also cover how to help a ‘’failure to
launch’’ child make the difficult transition from adolescence
to adulthood (being independent and self-sufficient). As a
parent you have a critical role in this process (Suitable for
parents of children 13 to 25). Tom Dozier is a behaviorist and
parenting coach, and he has a board certification in behavior
analysis. See www.guaranteedpt.com for more information
about Tom and the skills he teaches. Tom and his wife Pam
have 4 children and 6 grandchildren. RF907

Stop Using Coercion and Do Something
That Really Works
Tired of kids dawdling and refusing to do as told? Learn how
to stop yelling, nagging and questioning and do something
that really works. Research has shown that the most effective way to strengthen desirable behavior is through positive
reinforcement. The materials used in this class were developed by Dr. Glenn I. Latham, author of ‘’The Power of Positive Parenting.’’ Learn about the 10 common parenting traps,
what to do when a child misbehaves and most importantly,
what to do when a child behaves well, so that good behavior will increase. By eliminating coercion, you will increase
Positive Family Communication and establish yourself as an
Adult Role Model. You will also learn how to teach your values to your children, in such a way that they will internalize
them. For parents of children ages 3 to 16. Dozier

Transforming the Strong-Willed Child With this class, you can turn ‘’No! I won’t and you can’t make
me!’’ into smiles and ‘’Ok, Mommy.’’ Strong-willed children can
be very difficult to parent because they fight your authority and
enjoy the battles they create. Based on extensive research in
child behavior, this class will teach you how to end the battles
with your child and motivate your child to cooperate and please
you. This 2-week class will teach you practical skills to use right
away. Using primarily positive methods, you will transform your
child and your home so everyone is happier. Battling with a child
is no fun. Come learn how to put the fun back in parenting. You
will be glad you did, and so will your child! (Suitable for parents
with children ages 3 to 10). Dozier RF141 11/6/15-11/13/15 Fri 7:00 - 9:30pm $59
