If the tough economy is tempting you to consider cheap, low quality CV filter options,
remember that most fleet owners would never willingly compromise optimum engine
protection and safety for just a few Pence saving per filter, every year or two.
Does it really make sense then, to dilute your high quality workmanship, risk losing a
customer’s engine or business, for the price of a newspaper?
Choose true value for money on behalf of your customer.

The cover story focuses on our Susie® brand and I’m delighted with the
re-launch of Susie® air and electric coils.
Some of you may be surprised to learn that we have been supplying the
Susie® brand for over 25 years. Our coils are manufactured to provide the
best possible performance whilst remaining cost effective and also require
replacing less frequently due to superior product materials.
We decided to do a relaunch of the Susie® brand and bring an even
better product range to the market because there are far too many
spurious low cost coils available from a global basis these days. It may
look like there is a saving potential initially but it will always mean that there
has to be a compromise of quality and therefore safety and that’s not what
anyone responsible really wants or needs. Susie® addresses and answers
all the requirements and problems that an increasing number of customers
are asking.
We must remember that these coils connect to the brakes of the vehicle
and therefore are a safety critical product. Ultimately, using a correct
product, such as the TTC Susie® range, will ensure that the right product
is always used.
Topical story over the coming months is the prediction of one of the
worst winters for decades. Winter is a dangerous time to be on the roads
even for the most experienced of drivers.
Whilst this may not be welcome news for most of us on a personal level,
it does bring with it an opportunity to cover our essential winter products,
lighting programme and our range of Remy starters and alternators. TTC
provides essential advice and products to help stay safe.
There is a feature on the success of both the TTC Truck Racing weekend
in Zolder and the TTC BEN Golf day.
There is a feature on Big Wheels – a flourishing family run business and
we welcome one of our overseas clients from Australia with a feature on
HVE – who are part of the Southern Cross Transport Equipment Group.
I hope you enjoy this issue of Driven and I look forward to receiving further
feedback..

TTC has been supplying the Susie® for over 25
years with the product manufactured in the UK,
in a state-of-the-art facility using the latest
manufacturing techniques in air and electrical
coil production.
Susie® coils are manufactured to provide
outstanding performance characteristics for
anti-kink, coil memory, coil sag and coil working
length. Susie® coils remain a cost effective
option in the long term as Susie® coils require
less frequent replacements due to superior
product materials, Susie® coils deliver fewer
breakdowns, less downtime therefore reduced
operating costs.
TTC also recognises that there are many
spurious low cost coil options presented
internationally. Whilst there are apparent savings
for fleet operators, it is at the compromise of
quality and safety, thus resulting in increased
maintenance costs.
The fitment of a Susie® connecting the air
supply of the truck to the trailer, requires care
to be taken to ensure that the correct product is
used. We must remember that this is a product,
which connects to the brakes of the vehicle,
and as such must be considered to be safety
critical. Nowadays the pressure to save cost
is relentless, and certainly for many operators
the urge is to ensure that the cheapest product
available is used. Deep analysis of this approach
though, shows that this is generally far from
being the correct way to proceed.
There is a wide variety of products available in
the market and a bewildering range of materials
and specifications. One thing is sure: a low
cost product has achieved its cost by using
low-cost materials. Here we are talking about
recycled materials, wide-specification materials,
or incorrect alternatives to those demanded
by international standards. Analysis has been
undertaken which shows that a Susie®,

accordance with these international standards,
will last significantly longer than a cheaper
alternative. The initial cost saving is dwarfed by
the cost of replacement on the road, downtime,
and possible damage to other components. Using
a correct product, such as the TTC Susie®, will
help ensure the right product is always used.
Consider also the safety aspect. The failure of
an air-brake coil on a moving truck can lead to
catastrophic results. It is the responsibility of all
involved in the supply chain to ensure that the
correct product, correct to standard is utilised.
TTC’s Susie®’s meet this requirement.
A recent study by a major UK fleet has shown
that the TTC compact coil, polyurethane Susie®,
lasts around five times longer than the lower-cost
alternatives. Long-term this is the right decision.
Don’t be caught by a low quality coil and
compromise on vehicle safety.

electrical coil will provide an excellent

requirements of the trailer are able
to cope with the demands of winter.
Batteries will have also deteriorated
through the summer months to a point
where their reserve capacity may not
be sufficient for the demands of the
vehicle in the extreme cold winter
temperatures. Cold weather places
huge demands on tired batteries as the electrochemical reaction slows and performance is
reduced as the temperature plummets. The Yuasa

Winter is a dangerous time to be on the roads
even for the most experienced of drivers. However,
TTC have the essential winter products and tips
to help you stay safe.
Before you drive, you should ensure that you
have the essential winter products in case you
get caught in the snow. Some of the products that
TTC offer includes: high visibility jackets, rock
salt, and traditional brown rock salt for winter
de-icing. We also have the more refined white salt
now available. We also stock heavy-duty snow
shovels – both small and large, salt bins in 110ltr
and 130ltr sizes and snow chains.
A good check of the vehicles visibility is
essential for effective winter operation. Vehicle
visibility aids such as lights, reflectors, marker
boards, conspicuity tape and windscreen wipers
are a good place to start. Light units and reflectors
should be checked for cracks and damage and
correct operation. Bulbs can be replaced and spare
bulbs ordered to replenish depleted supplies.
Windscreen wipers should be checked for
deterioration of the rubber blades. After enjoying
the summer temperatures and the onslaught of
freezing conditions, wiper blades are often left to
scrape over partly thawed ice in an attempt to clear
the last residue. TTC stock an extensive range of
vehicle marker products, a comprehensive range
of Trico wiper blades and an expansive range of
TTC quality alternative lighting products, which will
ensure vehicle fleets remain safe and legal.
The increase in electrical load that is applied
to the vehicle throughout the winter months can
have significant implications for vehicle electrical
systems. Electrical coils should be checked for
damage and deterioration. A genuine Susie®

to handle the ever-increasing power demands
of modern commercial vehicles and is equipped
with the reliability to deal with all situations and
environments.
“The harsh winters of recent years have given
rise to a higher number of potholes. Steering and
suspension joints that may have taken a ‘knock’
due to the road conditions following last winter may
have further deteriorated over the summer months.
Damaged suspension joints can be addressed using
TTC’s quality alternative steering and suspension
range. Roadsprings and air bags can also be checked
for signs of deterioration and replaced before they
contribute to vehicle downtime,” says Malcolm
England, Senior Product Manager at TTC.
“Finally, having spent some time making sure the
vehicle starts, thoughts can be given to ensuring
it is equipped to stop. Air coils can be checked
for damage and deterioration and replaced with
a genuine Susie® air coil for ultimate durability.
Brake pads, brake discs, brake drums and brake
chambers can be checked for wear and damage.
The TTC quality alternative range of braking and air
brake components can be used to ensure that once
your fleet is rolling, when you wish to stop it, you
can,” concluded Malcolm.
Whatever the winter season may bring, the TTC
quality alternative range can ensure your fleet is
kept at maximum operating effectiveness.

Dark Winter
Nights…
…and
TTC Lights
As the sun sets on the remaining autumn days,
the need for efficient and effective lighting
becomes increasingly important. Vehicle visibility
is essential for safe and efficient commercial
vehicle operation.
Malcolm added: “The need to be seen extends
beyond the traditional vehicle legislative
applications to work lamps and interior lamps.
TTC’s range of work lamps has recently been
extended to complement the traditional
incandescent lighting to embrace the increasing
popularity of LED lighting. LED lights typically
provide lower power consumption and a longer
lifespan than traditional incandescent lights.”
TTC’s new range of LED work lamps covers over
twelve units ranging from a four LED unit producing
800 lumen of light, through to a twelve LED unit
producing 3200 lumen. Traditional LED inspection
lamps complement the range to provide the lighting
requirements of the CV operator.
Not only can the darkness descend upon the CV
workshop or yard, the interior of the commercial
vehicle can become an increasingly difficult environment within which to operate.
Interior lamps may have suffered damage throughout the brighter days where the
dependence upon lighting is far less pronounced. The TTC range of bulkhead and
interior lamps will ensure the darkest confines of a commercial vehicle can be
transformed into light efficient working spaces.
Looking at legislative vehicle lighting, TTC’s quality alternative range covers vehicle
front-end lighting, rear light assemblies, vehicle indicators and a comprehensive
range of front, side and rear marker lamps. All of these need to be checked to ensure
that throughout the winter period, safe, efficient and effective vehicle operation can
be maintained.

damaging voltage spikes. When a commercial
vehicle fails to start in the colder temperatures
outside people automatically assume that the
problem is with the starter motor. However, this
is very often not the case.
So look at the batteries first. Are they leaking,
have any cracks and do the posts appear
damaged, burnt or corroded. If the battery appears
in good visual condition then load test the battery
and observe the voltage. A good reading is a
minimum of 12.4v. If lower re-charge and repeat
the sequence.
There are five main components that work
together as a system in the starting circuit of
a commercial vehicle; the battery, the starter
motor, the cables, the magnetic switch and the
key switch. A problem in one or more of the five
main components can cause starting problems. In
these situations you should ensure that the engine
is switched off and then check/test the battery.
Check that the cable connections from the
battery to the starter motors are secure. A loose
connection will affect the cranking system
reducing power and can cause damage to the
battery/starter motor terminals. Also check
that the connections from the battery to the
starter motor are not corroding, as, if corroding
is present in the terminal connections this will
result in reduced output. You should also check
all connections to and from the magnetic switch
for loose connections and corrosion and all cables
should be checked for any damage.
The same is true of the alternator charging
system, which actually has only three
components, which work together as a system
– the battery, the cables and the alternator. A
“At Remy we have put an enormous amount of work into ensuring that
we improve the durability and efficiency of our heavy duty starters”
duty starters and alternators to ensure that they
can cope with the additional demands made by
driving in winter conditions. It costs a company
a lot of money when a commercial vehicle is off
the road unnecessarily. That is why, as a matter
of course, all Remy heavy duty rotating electrics
products are tested in cold chambers to ensure
that they can handle all types of road conditions
using simulation techniques to achieve a life
expectancy of three times the normal.”
The battery is the heart of the commercial
vehicle in winter driving conditions for both the
cranking and charging truck system. It is the place
where all checks and troubleshooting must begin.
It stores and provides power to crank the engine
as well as acting as a secondary source of power
when the load exceeds the alternator output. It
also acts to stabilise the system and smooth out
problem in one or more of these components
can cause charging and starting problems. With
alternators you should always check the drive
belt, pulley and/or tensioner, as well as the
charging cables for any damage. You should also
check that the cable connections at the battery
and to the alternator are secure.
A loose connection will affect the charging
system – reduced output – and can cause
damage to the alternator terminals. Check
that the connections at the battery to the
alternator are not corroded, as corrosion
present at the terminal connections will result in
reduced output.

Rotating Electrics to enable fleet operators to
prepare for the worst that winter may throw at a
commercial vehicle fleet.
The bad weather we have experienced over the
past couple of winters has put even more pressure
on the starting circuits of commercial vehicles.
Today one of the biggest challenges a fleet
manager faces is keeping truck batteries charged
– particularly with the greater electrical demands
that winter places on today’s trucks.
Commercial vehicles are also becoming ever
more sophisticated electronically. As winter
approaches, the demands on the battery, the
starter and the alternator become even greater
because of the additional drain to the alternator
caused by specific winter usage – lights, heating,
windscreen wipers.
Michael Flensborg, Sales & Marketing Director
of Remy Automotive says: “At Remy we have put

$JOBID $CUSTOMER $JOB_TITLE 11/13/2013
At the recent UK Worker of the Year 2013 event, held on 18th
October, which was sponsored by companies including TTC,
we had three of the finalists coming from the automotive
industry. One of them, Wayne Timbrell of CV specialist,
Martock Commercials Limited certainly gave a very good
account of himself at the prestigious awards ceremony at The
Madejski Stadium, reading last Friday night.
Wayne thanked TTC and explained that the TTC Catalogues
were always close by and ‘the bible’ of his business.
Martock Commercials buy their TTC product through CV
factor Big Wheels and when the UK WOTY filmcrew visited
Wayne and his business it was clear that TTC did indeed play
a significant role on a daily basis.
Unfortunately Wayne didn’t quite take thetitle of UK Worker
of the Year 2013, but he certainly did his company and the CV
sector as a whole very proud indeed and the trade press are
already following up his achievement. It also goes to show
that if you don’t enter the competition, then you can’t expect
any success, which Wayne is now enjoying.
TTC sponsored this competition to make sure the CV
market was championed by them and even through this initial
year of being associated with it, they have already achieved a
great deal.
Wayne said: “It was without a doubt the biggest event of
my career which I will treasure forever. The other finalists
were all of a very high standard and it was an honour to be a
part of the final. I’m delighted to have got this far.”
Wayne trained from the age of 16 in an engineering/
manufacturing factory with five years City & Guilds at Yeovil
College specialising in fabrication. His work path changed
over the six year apprenticeship from fabrication, to making
and assembly of large scale hatchery equipment where he
gained a rich knowledge base, working alongside time served
engineers with varied backgrounds and skill sets. This set
him in good stead for the rest of his life so far, with the ability
to make, repair and diagnose most problems.
“I got involved with the family business of Martock
Commercials in Somerset in 1997, which was the era of
conventional air braking systems, mechanical fuel injection
and early ABS electrics. I developed a natural ability to
understand vehicle systems, despite not having a college
background in motor maintenance, but with the expert
guidance of my dad (Malcolm), his skills were passed down,
father to son, says Wayne.
“We signed to be an authorised WABCO Service Centre
in 2001, since then we have not looked back. The training
WABCO supplies is excellent, so myself and our technicians
were sent to be brought up to speed on their excellent
product range such as early Vario ABS, Truck ABS and ECAS.
It was obviously a logical step to join hands with KnorrBremse and Haldex shortly afterwards to be able to offer our
customers the support they require on their vehicles.
Wayne added: “I have, and will always use the ‘blue’ TTC
catalogue. It is always to hand on the desk here next to
the phone, whether for a quick reference on lighting socket

TTC have a long established and enviable
reputation for their range of trailer axle and
suspension components.
The TTC catalogue has always remained a
firm favourite amongst our customer base,
both at distributor level and workshop level.
Often referred to as the ‘industry bible’
due to its comprehensive diagrams of axle
assemblies and suspension components.
The range of components is vast and ranges
from road springs and trailing arms through to
bushes, bearings and air bags. All the trailer
axle and suspension components have a tough
life, being exposed to harsh road conditions
with potholes; water spray and road salt in
the winter period all taking their toll.
Whilst the rubber compounds that are
used in truck and trailer suspension systems
are very durable, components do not last
indefinitely and now is the time to rectify the
wear and tear that has resulted from last
winters harsh weather. Water and salt from
the roads will have penetrated many axle bush
components and caused wear throughout
the summer season. Air bags, a long-standing
favourite amongst TTC customers will show
signs of wet rot where moisture within the
air system damages the air spring from
the inside.
Additionally, as the rubber ages it becomes
less flexible and punctures to the air bag may
be caused from debris on the road. Air bags
can also suffer circumferential abrasion and
chaffing due to worn suspension bushes.
All of these issues will ultimately lead to
component failure. TTC stock a comprehensive
range of Continental, Phoenix and Primeride air
springs to cater for the requirements of
a wide range of CV fleet operators.
For many customers and workshops,
when it comes to replacement components,
often it is more than just the suspension
bush that requires replacing, wear can be
present in the sleeve and pins or bolts.
TTC have recently extended the range of
TTC quality alternative axle and suspension
components to include axle bush kits for
popular applications. A complete beam end
bush kit TTC50875 is available that enables
TTC distributors to stock and supply all
of the components that are most likely
required for the CV workshop to undertake
the refurbishment.
Whilst workshops will have developed
many innovative ways of removing axle
suspension bushes, TTC have recently
introduced some specialist axle bush
removal and installation tools to make
life easier, save time, and ultimately, for
the CV operator, save money from reduced
vehicle downtime.
The most recent Edition 16 has also
been made available on-line where
individual pages can be printed on
demand for supply with components
to aid identification and application.

CHECKPOINT® SUPPORT TTC WITH
A SIMPLE SUPPLY CHAIN SOLUTION
Detachment of wheels from vehicles, particularly heavy commercial
vehicles, has been a cause of concern for many years. Detached wheels
can just come to rest and cause little or no damage. However, in worst
cases they can collide with other vehicles causing accidents and
even fatalities.
Research from *VOSA/TRL has indicated that a simple cost effective
solution is to fit wheel nut movement indicators and retainers to alert
drivers and maintenance engineers of any wheel nut movements.
This research has long been the basis of the commercial relationship
between TTC and Checkpoint-Safety®. The two companies came
together during the early 1990’s when Checkpoint® were at the
beginning of their UK and International success.
Today TTC and Checkpoint® enjoy an enviable relationship as sales of
Checkpoint® products have consistently grown year on year and
are in the TTC top 20 product sales.
Mike Marczynski, Owner & Inventor of the original Checkpoint®
indicators & retainers said: “Good working relations are the key to our
continued success together. TTC area managers are receptive to our
products and developing new customers and channels to market.”
Checkpoint Safety® is the leading global manufacturer, supplier and
inventor of the original wheel nut indicator and has championed safety
and protection for over 25 years. This simple solution could benefit the
industry by helping to eliminate wheel detachment and generate a cost
benefit of between £5.8m-£13.9m annually, according to *VOSA/TRL.
With estimates that annually there are up to *7500-11,000 cases
of loose wheel nuts and other defective wheel securing incidents
in the UK, sales of Checkpoint-Safety products have continued to grow
through TTC

Along with our partners
at Schaeffler Automotive,
TTC recently ran a special
promotion – the prizes
for which were a weekend
in Zolder, Belgium at
the 8th round of the FIA
European Truck Racing
Championship.
TTC Regional Sales
Managers Simon Jones and
Peter Shufflebotham joined
our promotion-winning
customers from Acton
Commercial Factors, FRM,
Various Truck Parts and A.N.
Richards and boarded an early flight to Brussels
on 21st September to the 22nd.
Peter says: “Following brief visits to the
Atomium at the Brussels Expo and to the site
of the Waterloo Battlefield, we made our way
to the ancient city of Leuven, home to the
Catholic University of Leuven, the city is also
the home of Stella Artois. Following lunch and a
tour of the small Domus Brewery, our overnight
stop at Hasselt beckoned.
“Sunday was race day. We made our way
to the track at Zolder where we had a warm
welcome from our hosts MKR Technology. They
are the Renault team in the championship and
one of their key strategic sponsors is LuK/FAG.
The race team had had a fraught 24 hours or
so, as one of their trucks had been in a major
crash on the Saturday, which resulted in them
transporting a replacement truck up from
the Czech Republic overnight – and they still
managed to win the second race of the day,
which pleased the team tremendously.
“Following visits to the paddock and pitlane, together with briefings from the team’s
media manager and Adam Lacko one of the two
drivers, it was time to watch the racing. These
trucks certainly aren’t what we are used to –
1150bhp and speeds limited to 165km/h. The
trucks didn’t perform well in the first race, but
driver Markus Bosiger was successful in the
second. Overall, the team lies in third place in
the championship with two rounds remaining.
“It was a great trip with our winning
customers and co-hosts LuK clutches and FAG
bearings. TTC would like to thank both Neil
Bailey and Ian Allen from Schaeffler for their
organisation of the whole promotion and event;
also thanks to our customers who attended,”
concluded Peter.

TTC hosted the annual Unipart BEN
Golf Day at the Breadsall Priory in
Derbyshire.
The event was a success with
great weather and 12 golf teams
in attendance there was a lot of
competition out on the golf course,
with SMP Europe being crowned
the winner.
Guests were also reminded of
the amazing work BEN do and the
reason behind the event - to help
raise money for the automotive
industry’s own charity. The evening
entertainment was award winning
writer and comedian Mark Maier
who also presented the winning
trophies.
Every year BEN provides
friendship, advice, emotional and
financial support to thousands of
people in the automotive sector
and their dependents. BEN also
runs four care centres across
the country. The work that their
care and welfare staff undertakes
is truly diverse and ranges from
providing round-the-clock care,
to giving emotional and financial
advice.
Steven Shaw, Head of Sales
at TTC commented: “Providing
these services is essential for our
automotive colleagues who are
facing hardship and distress, this
requires BEN to raise significant
funds and we are delighted to be
able to help by supporting them
through this event.
“Thank you to all who supported
this event and helped to raise
money for this very worthy cause.
We are very pleased to say that
the event raised close to £2,000
for the charity.”
Warren Neal, Events and
Exhibitions Co-ordinator for BEN
commented: “Well done to all our
winners and to the Breadsall Priory
for making BEN and all the players
feel so welcome on the day. It
goes without saying how much we
appreciate the fact that individuals
have taken time out of their busy
schedules to show support for BEN

Heavy Vehicle Parts & Equipment PTY Ltd (HVE) was founded in 2009 and

Equipment Group.
SCTEG’s aim is to offer the Australian transport industry a one-stop shop
availability for parts, supported by a dedicated and knowledgeable team
offering an unrivalled service and support to their retail branches and HVE

JOST Australia and Timken, HVE are also able to offer a brake caliper service
and repair facility, HVE branded ADR brake kits and HVE Euro 2 range of air

Being part of one of Australia’s leading trailer manufacturers enables
HVE to draw upon many years experience, which dates back to 1976 with
Southern Cross trailers headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia. Their
range portfolio is impressive and covers
trailers as diverse as flat top semi trailers
to dry freight vans and refrigerated units.
The HVE business continues to be
developed and with an impressive network
already in place from Victoria in the South
to Queensland in the North the Australian
trucking industry is never far away from
a reliable and dedicated parts supplier
says Mick Nicholls, Business Development
Manager at HVE.
Mick who has over 36 years experience
in the commercial vehicle market added:
“TTC and HVE have been working together
on a range of parts, with TTC providing one of widest ranges of European
Truck and Trailer Components and a pedigree which is as proven as that of
SCTEG / HVE.”
Darren Miller, TTC Australasia added: “We see our relationship with HVE
developing even further in the coming months as we increase our range of
TTC quality alternative products through the dedicated HVE network, in what
is proving a lucrative and winning combination where both quality and cost
are a key ingredient.”
Following on from TTC’s attendance at the Brisbane Truck Show in May, Darren Miller
– General Manager of TTC Australasia was in attendance recently at the Perth Truck &
Trailer Show to support the Australian trucking industry in Western Australia.
Nearly 10,500 visitors attended this year’s event, which was held at the Perth
Convention and Exhibition Centre, over the three days. The Truck and Trailer Show is a
major event and was well attended from across the industry with exhibits covering new
trucks, trailers, parts, equipment and accessories making it hugely successful for the
Western Australia trucking industry.
TTC were on hand to give support and Darren commented: “Following a successful event
for TTC in Brisbane, I was equally impressed with what the trucking industry in Western
Australia had to offer. I found the event well supported and extremely well run, which
enabled me to conduct a packed schedule of business meetings during my time there.
TTC has made a significant investment in supporting the trucking industry in Australia and
New Zealand and is currently working with a number of clients. TTC distributors will have
access to the complete programme of European Truck & Trailer Components and with the
additional benefit of TTC’s own quality alternative product will have a unique and dedicated
offering, where both quality and cost are proving a winning combination.”

THE RAPID HUB REPAIR SOLUTION FROM FAG
As you probably already know, the Mercedes-Benz Vito, Viano, Sprinter and VW
Crafter and many other models are factory fitted with wheel bearings permanently
installed in the knuckle joint.
Previously, the only way of replacing a worn bearing was to fit an entire new
knuckle assembly. This meant not only an expensive repair in replacement
components and labour, but costly for your customer in terms of vehicle downtime Now, the faster you are, the more competitive you can be!
The FAG LCV wheel bearing repair solution effectively accelerates the repair,
reducing labour time to the extent that you can replace two worn bearings instead of
just one complete knuckle. Removal and reinstallation of the knuckle and the wheel
alignment required that comes with a complete replacement can be consigned to
history by using an FAG repair kit and the special bearing replacement tool.
This is the only wheel bearing repair solution for LCVs WITHOUT the requirement
for wheel alignment or a complete knuckle replacement!
FAG technicians are on hand to answer your questions.

A worn-out compression bumper can destroy the cabin shocks in extreme
conditions. Cabin shocks will move too deep in compression position, this
could destroy the bottom valve, with a lack of damping as result. The condition
of the compression and rebound bumper will also have a big influence on the
truck driver’s comfort.
As a solution to this problem, Monroe offers the MK801 Mounting Kit. This
Mounting Kit contains a compression bumper and a rebound bumper; both
bumpers are stand alone and not mounted on the cabin shock. (see picture)
Please advise your customers to check the condition of the Compression-and
