Hi Everyone - Waiuku Business Association
COMMITTEE MEETING UPDATES, NEWS & MEMBER INFORMATION TO WBDA MEMBERS
FRIDAY 23RD MAY 2014
Hi Everyone
Well, I think we can safely
say that the Waiuku Steel ‘n’
Wheels festival was an absolute
hit with pretty much the whole
community and the Waiuku
Business
&
Development
Association are really happy
with the exposure the town
received and the cash injection
into the town. We would also
like to thank all the businesses fire-ups, Waiuku Line Dancing Group
and Luke Ennion with the feature car
that opened during the event. I “The Little Menace”, View Road School
know for some businesses the for parking facilities and all the other
instant spin-off isn’t great but volunteers who worked tirelessly to make
the long term benefits not only the day a success.
to tourists returning later to visit After talking with some of the businesses
and after event sales is often I know some done exceptionally well and
one had their record day since opening
where the benefits are seen.
T
he WB&DA would like to thank
firstly the amazing Steel n
Wheels committee, The Kentish
Hotel for helping with the Lions Charity
Funding, Waiuku Post for advertising, The
Waiuku Lions, Knight and Dickey and
their volunteer drivers for supplying their
trucks on the day, TV Short Contracting
and Waiuku ITM for the signage and the
logs, Super Liquor for sponsorship of the
V8 chainsaw, the businesses that were
involved in the token promotion, the
Rangers, Groovit Hip Hop Dance Crew,
Red Hot Cheerleaders, Gubbs Dragster
and the Nostalgic Dragsters for the
which is fantastic. The businesses that
purchased t-shirts to help publicise the
event looked fantastic and has generated
discussion from the public that we need
to have t-shirts to purchase to the public
next year.
The token promotion went well and for
those of you that would like to purchase
any WSW merchandise there is some still
available at the Information Centre.
The next event we are debating is the
Fireworks display. We have a tentative
date but nothing confirmed at present.
Unfortunately our major sponsor Lex and
Karen Mills from Waiuku New World

are currently selling the business so the
continuance of this event is in the air at
this stage. This is a fantastic family event
attracting around 15000 people from all
around Franklin so if would be sad for
it to end especially being the only public
Fireworks display in Franklin. If you
are interested in becoming the major
sponsor of this event or would like to
put something towards this year’s event
to make it happen please let me know as
soon as possible.
We do however have confirmation that NZ
Steel are again sponsoring the Waiuku
Christmas Parade which is fantastic.
This year’s date for the event is the 13th
December and the event theme is “Movies
and Music” which will make it so easy to
conger up great ideas for a float. We are
really hoping the businesses this year
will get on board and get into the festive
celebration. If you would like to have a float
but are struggling for man power and/or
time constraints please let us know. We

have community groups that are always
looking for funds and they can build one
for you. This not only helps the business
out but helps our community groups with
their fundraising.
taking away your signage or giving you
a fine so please take the time to read and
understand them.
We are currently working now to
complete the Waiuku brochure and get
that in to print so we have informative upto-date information on the town that can
be circulated amongst Information Kiosks
and centres in and around the country.
The brochure not only has information
on our history but a list of places to stay,
eat and things to do when they visit our
lovely town.

I have enclosed in this edition information
on a few bylaws that are now in force
or will be in the next little while. The
Public nuisance bylaw will help with
you all knowing what is legal and what
is not especially when talking about
skateboards, bikes etc.
The other bylaw is the signage bylaw.
These are regularly checked by Council
and the last thing we want is them
Have a great weekend.
The Public Safety and Nuisance Bylaw
which comes into effect next Monday,

T

Bylaws will ensure that the
council and Auckland Transport
continues to address public safety,
nuisance and general behaviour in public
places using a combination of regulatory
(i.e. enforcement) and non-regulatory
(such as education) approaches.
The
bylaw is not about criminalising people
but a practical, early intervention tool to
prevent escalation of low level activities
which could lead to more serious
offending. Essentially, we wish to ensure
that residents and visitors to the Auckland
region can freely enjoy shopping, dining
and other activities in public areas
without feeling intimidated or unsafe in
any way. To reiterate, the bylaws are in
place to make sure public spaces feel safe,
clean and are convenient for people to
use and enjoy without being disturbed or
experiencing offensive behaviour.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN
FOR BUSINESSES?
Auckland
Council
and
Auckland
Transport encourage businesses and the
public to contact the council if they have a
complaint as it raises our attention to the
fact that there is an issue. (i.e. provides the
council with a record). Businesses can call
the Auckland Council call centre on ph: 09
301 0101 to log a call regarding any legal
activity that is deemed a nuisance under
the bylaw. Illegal activity will require a
call to the Police.
To view the bylaw itself please visit

Birtwistle should you have any questions
or our Bylaws Enforcement Officers on 301
