OUR FEATURED PARTNERS
WITH A
LITTLE
PLANNING
You’ll Never Have
To Say Goodbye To
Summer
As we sit outside amidst the
calm and beauty of nature in the
summertime, our minds and souls
are often filled with the tranquility
and serenity that come with a
warm breeze, stargazing into wee
hours of the morning, the smell
of lilacs and roses wafting in the
breezeways, or putting on the
green just outside the back door.
When the weather cools and the
evenings come earlier, it doesn’t
mean it is time to move inside
until spring.
With today’s outdoor living
technology and products, summer
can last much longer than the 94
days between the summer and fall
solstices and extend over all 365
days. It just takes a little planning
to create an outdoor setting that
will enable you and your family to
have an endless summer. Consider
some of these ideas:
Keep
Calm and
Carry On, Outdoors:
Instead of fretting over the
cold temperatures that keep
you bundled up inside, take the
winter parties outdoors. You’ll
be amazed at how warm even a
small fire pit can be. And if you
want more, add some vertical
space heaters that are both
affordable and quick to kick on
the heat.
Think Green
It is true that colors
have a direct impact
on our mood and
brain chemistry,
and green is one of
the most calming,
healing colors of all.
With today’s highquality artificial turf,
you can preserve
the power of green year round
and even enjoy some quiet time
putting as the sun rises or sets.
Cook Up and In
a Storm
Seriously, think how
much better food
tastes when it’s sizzling
on an outdoor grill instead
of an inside frying pan?
And have you noticed that
meals are actually more social
when eaten outdoors under an
endless sky? The joy of eating
outdoors never has to end with
today’s outdoor kitchens with
BBQ stations, stove tops and even
refrigerators. Create a natural stone
bar area with a gas fire strip down
the center to keep both you and
your food warm for every meal of
the day. You’ll never want to “dine
in” again.
Right now, we are making it
easier than ever to
plan for an endless
summer. For all new
projects completed
by September 15,
we will demolish
and remove your old
concrete or asphalt
completely free*. We
will then recycle the
old materials and give
you an instant cash
credit toward your new System
Pavers project. Call 877-728-3165
today to schedule your free

summers are as endless as the
starry sky in August. Take note
of what you love doing most, in
your personal outdoors, and start
building a plan to keep it going
year round!

WHAT TO
DO ABOUT
WILD RABBITS:
Rabbits Eating Plants
Excerpt courtesy of The Humane Society
Rabbit damage is almost always
the result of their appetite for
our plants. They eat flower and
vegetable plants in spring and
summer and the bark of fruit and
ornamental trees and shrubs in the
fall and winter.
What attracts rabbits to
urban areas?
There are several species of wild
rabbits—most are called cottontail
rabbits—who, between them, live
across most of North America.
Cottontails like to live at the edges
of open areas. In fact, they are
rarely found in dense forests or
open grassland.
This love of edges means they
love our suburbs. Yards, parks,
playgrounds, and office parks,
often with small natural buffers
in between, have lots of edges
between small areas of different
habitats that rabbits love.
Common solutions
First things first: Make sure a rabbit
is the culprit. Deer eat many of the
same things rabbits do and are
also common around yards. Twigs
browsed by rabbits look neatly
clipped but plants browsed by
deer appear ragged and torn. You
may see the easily recognizable
tracks of rabbits in soft soil or
snow. And you may see the rabbits

themselves—a dead giveaway to
their presence—most often near
dawn and dusk.
Barriers for flowers and
vegetables
A well-constructed fence is the
most effective way to protect
plants. Two-foot high chicken
wire supported by posts every
six to eight feet is strong
enough to keep rabbits out.
Stake the bottom securely to
the ground to prevent rabbits
from pushing underneath it.
Movable fence panels can
protect the garden right
after the first planting, when
damage is likely to be most
severe, and go in the shed the
rest of the year. New plantings
can be protected individually
under plastic jugs that have
the bottom cut out. These also
serve as mini-greenhouses in
spring when nights are still cool.
Other protection may need to
be provided once the jugs
come off.
Barriers for trees
Commercial tree wrap or plastic
tree guards can keep rabbits
from nibbling bark. Cylinders
of hardware cloth (stand on
their own) or poultry wire (need
staking) can work as well. These
barriers should be as high as
usual snow depth plus eighteen
inches. Young trees and saplings
are more vulnerable so focus on
protecting them.
Repellents
In some places, fencing won’t
be practical or damage will
be so slight that a fence isn’t
cost effective. Then chemical
repellents can protect small
plots and individual plants. Don’t
use a repellent on plants that
people will eat unless the label
specifies it is safe to do so.
Scare Devices
Sometimes, scare tape or
balloons might frighten rabbits
away from an area. The
pinwheels sold to repel moles
might provide a look scary to
rabbits as well.

FOUR
REASONS
For Building An
Outdoor Kitchen
I really just want to say:
1. Because you should
2. Because you should
3. Because you should
4. Because you should
But realize that might be not be
enough for you, so here you go:
Hi!
I’m Sam the Cooking Guy,
and I’m happy to be a part
of the System Pavers family.
You might wonder how a
cook and a company that
specializes in outdoor pavers
& entertaining spaces makes
sense. The simple answer
is that they specialize in
creating outdoor lifestyle
changes. And whether that
means redoing a driveway,
a pathway or building the
outdoor entertaining area
of your dreams—it’s
really all about lifestyle—
and that’s the same with me.
Sam creates recipes that are
“big in taste, but small in
effort” for all occasions. With
14 Emmys for his TV show
and 3 published cookbooks,
we hope you love him as
much as we do.
You can catch all of his
latest TV show episodes
on his website

Leave it to Beaver is a TV show
—not how we live anymore
I grew up in a home that had the
kitchen completely separated
from the other entertaining
areas of the house—it wasn’t
anywhere near the family room
or living room. In fact my mom
would bring appetizers in to
guests, then disappear again.
But that isn’t how we entertain
anymore. And now not only
are kitchens the main part of
everything, but entertaining is
heading outdoors, and so should
the kitchens.
Property Value
Every time you add something
new and permanent to your
home, the property value
increases. And whether it’s
an extra bathroom, garage
built-ins or a pool, you get
the increase. And an outdoor
kitchen is not just a tremendous
value add—it’s one of those
sexy hot buttons that can
make a property a “musthave” for buyers and give you
an advantage over the other
choices.
Build It and You Will Use It
Backyards are often areas of
a home that get neglected,
but they can be an amazing
opportunity for creating peace,
tranquility and a whole new
living space, without adding on
to your home’s square footage.
Depending on where you live,
an outdoor kitchen can be used
most of the year. And since we
all know food cooked outside
somehow tastes better than
inside—this is a chance for
almost everything to taste better
all the time, in a comfortable,
relaxed environment.
Dollars & Sense
Get it, sense/cents? It’s hot; the
(expensive) A/C is running, and
the dollars are pouring out the
windows and leaky doorjambs.
And cooking inside and adding
to the already-there heat just
doesn’t make sense. So kill the
A/C, and take the party out. Plus
with a bit of storage and even a
small fridge, you’ll save running
back & forth and have a selfcontained world out there.
Oh, and there’s always this: ever
know “that person” who won’t
allow red wine at their party
because they live in fear of a
spill? Spill outside—no problem.
So build yourself a comfortable
spot you can enjoy year
round (by adding a
fire pit) that’ll let
you live and
entertain in
a relaxed,
casual and
worryfree
way.

THE PERFECT
ADD-ON
for Any Home,
Anywhere
When Jeanne and Scott Hudock
purchased their home in Benicia,
California, to say there was a
lot of work to be done to the
yards was an understatement.
As a foreclosure in disrepair,
they started on the front yard,
cleaning up gravel strips,
overgrown weed patches and
other eyesores that added to the
disheveled outdoor appearance
of their home. Home renovation
and curb appeal began with new
siding, windows, trim, wrought
iron railings and multiple stone
walls—after which they had
a beautiful front yard. But at
the end of it all, it still wasn’t
functional for outdoor living.
Realizing they needed help
creating an environment
that utilizes the small square
footage of the backyard, while
at the same time making it
functional for a family who
enjoys entertaining, they hired
an architect to design a plan
that would add to their home’s
living areas and create a quiet,
peaceful place to enjoy the
outdoors. With a solid plan
in place, they began working
with System Pavers Senior
Design Consultant Daniel Del
Rio. They were amazed at how
he was able to take a good
design and make it even better.
Says Scott, “Daniel’s keen eye
and experience guided us
through the overwhelming
process of making perfect
choices in design, colors, and
pattern layout of the pavers
for our home’s style. His ability
to make it all come together
while assisting us in securing
affordable financing was very
impressive indeed.
“Project Manager Joe Kauffman
realized our dream from paper
to reality. Joe was here daily to
oversee the execution of the
project from start of excavation
until the final seal coat. There
were bumps in the road, but
what impressed Jeanne and I
was Joe’s professional manner
in dealing with them and
ensured we were satisfied
with the outcome.”
The Hudocks’ new backyard can
easily be described as a “fullservice” outdoor oasis. Features
and elements in their new
backyard include: a gas fireplace;
cascading water feature;
conversation seating with
elevated stone planters; outdoor
dining area; a complete outdoor
kitchen that includes a custom,
built-in BBQ grill, stove top, sink,
cabinets, and a refrigerator; LED
lighting; and artificial turf for
low-maintenance beauty and a
great area for the dogs to run
and rump around.
“We now have a beautiful
indoor/outdoor living room,”
continues Scott. “System Pavers
added 1,000 square feet of very
inviting living space. We keep
the doors open all the time as
this new area is an extension of
our home. One night we ended
up sitting outside with friends
for hours and didn’t even notice
the time
go by as we
were enjoying a
beautiful inviting
setting and staying
warm at the same
time.”
Beyond the joy they get
from their new backyard, the
Hudocks were flattered and
grateful when System Pavers
co-owner and CEO Larry Green
and Regional Vice President
Leen Van Bergen paid them
a personal visit, viewing the
company’s design and work
first hand. Although Larry
referred to their home as a
masterful showcase of what you
can create with quality pavers
and designers, the Hudocks
still refer to it as an amazing
transformation of a yard gone
bad, and a great big room where
they can have fun with friends,
family and their three dogs.

behalf of the System Pavers family, we are honored to
accept the Guildmaster Award for the fifth year in a row
